RESUMO

Direct ingestion of sandstorm particles is an important pathway in human exposure to heavy metals. This study investigated the potential health risks of heavy metals transported in sandstorms from Dunhuang to Lanzhou in northwestern China using environmental magnetic parameters and metal bioaccessibilities in simulated gastric and intestinal tracts. The mean magnetic susceptibility of sandstorms in Lanzhou was 366.86 × 10-8 m3/kg, which was more than 5-fold higher than that of sandstorms in Dunhuang, indicating that these sandstorms continuously receive heavy metals with high magnetic mineral content along their pathways. Heavy metal concentrations in sandstorms were higher than background values and those in urban topsoil. Enrichment factors and pollution load indices showed that these heavy metals were derived from both natural and anthropogenic sources, with Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd being strongly influenced by anthropogenic sources. The bioaccessibilities of Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb in the sandstorms of Lanzhou were very high, ranging from 22.69% (Cu) to 50.86% (Pb) for gastric phase, and 12.07% (Pb)-22.11% (Cd) for interstinal phase, with the significant reduction in χlf of the physiologically-based extraction testing (PBET) treated sandstorms. The magnetic minerals are significant correlation with the concentrations of heavy metals in sandstorm and effect the release of heavy metals during human digestion process. The overall ecological risk posed by heavy metals contained in sandstorms was relatively low; however, the risk was moderate to high at individual sites. Ingestion posed the highest carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for both adults and children, with the risk for children being higher.

RESUMO

Most jaw lesions are treated surgically. Areas of abnormal proliferation or destruction in bone are commonly treated by regional curettage, excision, or resection. However, surgery is invasive and leaves a defect where the lesion was removed. Surgical trauma to adjacent healthy tissue, including vital neurovascular bundles is often unavoidable, and can be especially traumatizing to the pediatric patient. Select jaw lesions with well-studied nonsurgical pharmaceutical treatments are presented here.

RESUMO

For successful outcomes in bone grafting, it is important to have a clear and detailed understanding of the fundamentals and basics in regenerative science. This article summarize the grafting materials and growth factors that are now in use to provide an improved understanding of the properties of each material and indications for subsequent use. The article gives an overview of the fundamentals of bone healing, including the physiology of regeneration. It is hoped that clinicians can make improved decisions that are based in literature when considering treatment options for restoring patients' functional dentition.

RESUMO

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is an autogenous material that is derived from a person's own platelets and is used to enhance wound healing and tissue regeneration. Platelet concentrates have been applied in dermatology, pain management, sports medicine, plastic surgery, cardiac surgery, urology, and also dentistry. PRF has garnered significant interest in the dental community because of its proposed regenerative properties and its ability to aid in wound healing. PRF is proposed to have a direct effect on enhancing a patient's wound healing by suprasaturating the wound with growth factors that promote tissue healing. Clinically, PRF is easily produced chairside from the patient's own blood. The autologous nature of PRF makes it preferred over a variety of allografts used in dentistry today. Therefore, PRF has significant potential in being applicable to all areas of dentistry, including oral and maxillofacial surgeries.

RESUMO

Leaf samples of Juniperus formosana were collected from an open road environment, in order to establish how particulate matter (PM) generated by vehicles was dispersed in both horizontal and vertical directions. Sampling was conducted at sites with trees of varying height and configuration adjacent to a major road in Lanzhou, Gansu Province, Northwest China. The concentration of remanence-bearing ferrimagnets in the leaf samples was estimated from measurements of Saturation Isothermal Remanent Magnetization (SIRM), while the weight of particles deposited on the leaves and their elemental composition were determined at different heights and in different directions relative to the road. The PM on the surface of needles was predominantly influenced by traffic emissions and by dust resuspension. Rows of roadside trees, as opposed to solitary trees, were more effective at intercepting PM and thus in filtering road traffic pollution. The results indicate that Juniperus formosana needles may be an effective bio-sensor for monitoring variations in the spatial diffusion of road pollutants.

RESUMO

The magnetic properties of particulate matter (PM) deposited on the needles of Juniperus formosana along an urban street in Lanzhou city were measured to evaluate the variations of PM concentration in different seasons by varying distance from the road. The magnetism of PM deposited in this context was significantly higher in winter than in summer, which may reflect changes of atmospheric particle concentrations. Needle samples which were collected from the road-facing side exhibiting significantly stronger magnetism compared with those which were collected from the opposite side of the road, indicating the distance from pollution source to the needles as a factor controls the amount of PM. The results of this study show that the needles of Juniperus formosana are effective traps for PM and can therefore be used to monitor pollution fluxes in different seasons in an important urban context in NW China.
