RESUMO

Due to the coastal wetland degradation caused by human activities and environmental changes, many coastal wetland restoration studies have been carried out in China to restore the degraded ecosystems, but it still lacks a comprehensive assessment of restoration effectiveness at national scale. In this study, a meta-analysis of 78 field studies was conducted to quantitatively assess the restoration effectiveness of biodiversity and ecosystem services in China's coastal wetlands. At the same time, we evaluated the impact factors such as ecosystem types, restoration methods and measures, and restoration time on restoration effectiveness. The results show that coastal wetland ecological restoration has improved the biodiversity and ecosystem services by 36.8 % and 38.2 % respectively within the time range reported in the research literature, but neither has returned to the level of natural ecosystems. Biodiversity recovery is significantly positively correlated with the recovery of ecosystem services, indicating the simultaneous recovery outcome. Compared with degraded wetlands, the effectiveness of passive restoration is better than that of active restoration. In the mangrove ecosystem, invasive species removal is the most effective among the restoration measures, and the restoration effectiveness of polyculture plantations is better than that of monoculture plantations. When time ranges from 0 to 20 years, the recovery level of coastal wetlands tends to increase with the extension of restoration time. However, when the restoration time is >20 years, the recovery level decreases, which may be related to the lack of maintenance and management measures in the later stage. Our study showcases the scientific evidence for future coastal wetland ecological restoration in China.

RESUMO

The necessity for extensive historical data, variables, and weight determination still presents challenges and complexity, notwithstanding the growth in research on socio-ecological vulnerability to climate change. In order to fill in these gaps, this study used China's Fujian Province as a case study to propose a unique strategic approach for studying socio-ecological vulnerability to climate change from 2000 to 2020 by utilizing remote sensing and the framework of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. In a GIS scenario, this method employs a comprehensive framework with a wide variety of indicators and a data-driven ranking algorithm. The findings of this study revealed a moderate degree of socio-ecological vulnerability throughout the coast, with significant regional heterogeneity in its spatial distribution. Furthermore, throughout the course of the two-decade, the highly vulnerable zones expanded by 6.04%, outpacing the low-risk areas by 1116 km2 (61.41%) and 2066 km2 (123.39%), respectively, with the majority of the increase taking place in Fuzhou and Ningde. These changes in vulnerability were shown to be principally influenced by changes in vegetation, precipitation, GDP, and land use (LULC). The major influence of precipitation was highlighted further in the spatial autocorrelation analysis, which demonstrated a close correlation between growing socio-ecological vulnerability and increased precipitation. To conclude, this study's methodology differs from other socio-ecological vulnerability studies in that it is flexible and self-sufficient, offering users a choice of weight application. It also gives a more useful, accurate, and suggestive model to enable decision-makers or stakeholders build strategies or ideas for constructing more resilient coastal systems.

RESUMO

The notable improvement of China's wetland management policies over the last four decades prompted this study's goal to quantitatively analyze the transformation of China's coastal wetland policies from 1979 to 2022 by applying an institutional network analysis and policy text analysis. The results of the institutional network analysis revealed an administrative management transformation from a multidepartmental mode to an integrated management framework. Furthermore, the policy text analysis results revealed a change in policy priorities (from exploitation to protection) and management targets (from a single environmental element to a comprehensive ecosystem and further to collaborative governance). In addition, the overall outcome of this study instigated proposals for the improvement of future wetland policies on climate change, integrated planning, natural capital, and public participation. Hence, this study presents an example of wetland policy analysis based on a quantitative review, which we hope will also be valuable for other countries.

RESUMO

Large scale coastal land-claim and sea-enclosing (CLASE) activities have caused habitat destruction, biodiversity losses and water deterioration, thus the local governments in China have recently undertaken seabed dredging and dyke opening (SDADO) as typical ecological restoration projects. However, some projects focus on a single impact on hydrodynamic conditions, water quality or marine organisms. In a case study in Xiamen, China, an integrated effects assessment framework centres on ecohydrology, using modeling of hydrodynamic conditions and statistical analysis of water quality, was developed to assess the effects of ecological restoration projects. The benefits of SDADO projects include improving hydrodynamic conditions and water quality, as a precursor to further marine biological improvements. This study highlights the need to comprehensively consider ecological effects of SDADO projects in the planning stage, and an integrative assessment method combining cumulative effects of hydrodynamic conditions, water quality and biological factors.

RESUMO

Different studies have proved that enhancing public Ocean Environmental Awareness (OEA) will lead to increased public support for ocean environmental protection. Our study develops a questionnaire to investigate current levels of students' OEA from three aspects including ocean environmental concerns, ocean environment knowledge and willingness to participate in ocean related activities. This questionnaire was applied to students from Xiamen University to understand the OEA of university students in China, of which there are few studies. Using data gathered from a random purposive sample, the OEA level of students in Xiamen University was investigated and then the influencing factors (education, geographical situation, age and gender etc.) were further analyzed. Findings suggest that most students are concerned about the ocean environment but their knowledge is not enough that makes the willingness to participate in ocean related actions limited as well. The results show there is an urgent need to improve students' OEA.
