RESUMO

The delayed self-heterodyne and self-homodyne (DSH) method is widely used for measuring the line shapes of high coherent lasers. This method results in an autocorrelation of a laser line under the condition of a delay that is much larger than its coherent time. In practice, the delay is often not so long, especially for very narrow linewidth lasers, resulting in errors in rebuilding the laser's line shape from the DSH line. Many papers were devoted to the topic, but most of them are based on the formula for white noise. Analytical formulas of phase variance for 1/f noises are presented in this paper; the DSH line shapes for different noise types and different delay lengths are simulated based on the formulas. Some experimental data of the DSH line, combined with the power spectral density of frequency noise, are processed, showing good agreement with the theoretical analysis. It is indicated that the DSH line shape shows complicated behaviors varied with the delay, with noise types, and with the measurement duration. Such effects are to be compensated for in retrieving the laser's linewidth from the DSH data.

RESUMO

Characteristics of intensity noise of optically pumped vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers and solid-state lasers, induced by the beating of the main lasing mode and non-lasing side modes and its reduction, have been reported in recent years. The mode beating noise of an external cavity diode laser composed of an electrically pumped edge-emitting laser diode chip is studied experimentally in this Letter. The noises due to the beating of the main mode with the first- to third-order side modes are observed, and multiple sub-peaks in the beating noise are measured. It is assumed that the new phenomena are coming from the enhanced four-wave mixing in the longer-active medium. Intensity noise reduction is also demonstrated by using the second harmonic generation of a beta barium borate crystal as a nonlinear absorber.

RESUMO

It is a basic task in Brillouin distributed fiber sensors to extract the peak frequency of the scattering spectrum, since the peak frequency shift gives information on the fiber temperature and strain changes. Because of high-level noise, quadratic fitting is often used in the data processing. Formulas of the dependence of the minimum detectable Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and frequency step have been presented in publications, but in different expressions. A detailed deduction of new formulas of BFS variance and its average is given in this paper, showing especially their dependences on the data range used in fitting, including its length and its center respective to the real spectral peak. The theoretical analyses are experimentally verified. It is shown that the center of the data range has a direct impact on the accuracy of the extracted BFS. We propose and demonstrate an iterative fitting method to mitigate such effects and improve the accuracy of BFS measurement. The different expressions of BFS variances presented in previous papers are explained and discussed.

RESUMO

The intensity enhancement effect of a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PSFBG) is investigated theoretically and experimentally in this paper. Due to the effect, both of the FBG reflection bands and the transmission peak show red-shift with the increase of pump light wavelength from the shorter side to the longer side of the Bragg wavelength. The transmission peak shifts in pace with the pump's wavelength, which is much faster than the reflection band. The maximum shift increases with the pump power. In contrast, the red-shift is very small when the pump light deceases from the longer side of the Bragg wavelength. Such asymmetric behavior is checked dynamically by using a frequency modulated laser in a serrated wave, showing push-pull behavior. The effect of the characteristics of thermal dissipation conditions is also measured. The fiber loss coefficient of FBG being tested is estimated from the measured data to be about 0.001 mm-1, which may be attributed to the H2-loading and UV exposure in FBG fabrication. The observed phenomena are believed of importance in application where PSFBG is utilized as a narrow linewidth filter.

RESUMO

A simple and low-cost 1550 nm semiconductor laser with subkilohertz intrinsic linewidth is experimentally demonstrated. A commercial distributed feedback diode laser is self-injection locked to the resonance transmission peaks of a fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot cavity through a polarization-maintaining fiber ring with the optical path length of 4 m, with the laser frequency noise suppressed by over 70 dB in the Fourier frequency band from 5 Hz and 1 kHz. The laser features an intrinsic Lorentzian linewidth of 125 Hz as well as a relative intensity noise of <-142 dBc/Hz above 2 MHz, and provides over 0.8 nm quasi-continuous tunability, which is suitable for advanced applications requiring a narrow linewidth laser with ultralow frequency noise.

RESUMO

A phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) with a temporally sequenced multi-frequency (TSMF) source is proposed. This technique can improve the system detection bandwidth without the sensing range decreasing. Up to 0.5 MHz detection bandwidth over 9.6 km is experimentally demonstrated as an example. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such a high detection bandwidth over such a long sensing range is reported in Φ-OTDR-based distributed vibration sensing. The technical issues of TSMF Φ-OTDR are discussed in this Letter. This technique will help Φ-OTDR find new important foreground in long-haul distributed broadband-detection applications, such as structural-health monitoring and partial-discharge online monitoring of high voltage power cables.

RESUMO

A laser phase and frequency noise measurement method by an unbalanced Michelson interferometer composed of a 3 × 3 optical fiber coupler is proposed. The relations and differences of the power spectral density (PSD) of differential phase and frequency fluctuation, PSD of instantaneous phase and frequency fluctuation, phase noise and linewidth are derived strictly and discussed carefully. The method obtains the noise features of a narrow linewidth laser conveniently without any specific assumptions or noise models. The technique is also used to characterize the noise features of a narrow linewidth external-cavity semiconductor laser, which confirms the correction and robustness of the method.

RESUMO

A coupled-mode equation (CME) of twisted birefringent fiber is presented in this paper, which uses the degenerate polarization modes of single-mode fibers as eigenmodes in a unified coordinate. The inconsistency between the coordinate and the rotating principal axis, existing in the previous CME, is solved by conversion to the lab coordinate. The CME gives self-consistent results for fibers with high birefringence or low birefringence and for single-mode fibers as well. Analyses and simulations show the CME gives characteristics of twisted birefringent fiber coincident with the property of polarization-maintaining fibers.

RESUMO

Spectral characteristics of orthogonal polarization mode coupling for pure twisted polarization maintaining fiber Bragg gratings (PM-FBG) are proposed and analyzed experimentally and theoretically. Different from the polarization mode coupling in PM-FBG due to side pressure, a resonant peak at the middle of two orthogonal polarization modes is found when the PM-FBG is twisted purely which is attributed to the cross coupling of polarization modes. Its intensity increases with the twisting rate. A new coupled mode equation is built to describe the pure twist polarization mode coupling, in which both the normal strain induced by strain-applied parts and the tangential strain induced by twisting are taken into consideration and expressed in a unified coordinate. The novel phenomenon and its explanation are believed to be helpful for PM-FBG applications in fiber sensor and laser technologies.

RESUMO

A simple sensor system for high spatial resolution distributed strain field measurement is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The fiber loop ringdown technique combined with a linear chirped fiber Bragg grating is used to realize the high spatial resolution. A proof-of-concept distributed strain sensor with 2 mm spatial resolution is realized. The sensor network is also explored and researched experimentally. The proposed technique suggests a broad range of applications for real-time distributed physical parameter sensing, such as strain or temperature.

RESUMO

We propose a modulation-free technique for frequency stabilization of an external-cavity diode laser (ECDL) by using a phase-difference biased Sagnac interferometer to produce dispersion spectroscopic error signals. A half-wave plate and a total internal reflection prism are inserted into the loop to provide a phase-difference bias between the clockwise and counterclockwise beams with perpendicular polarizations, instead of the previous method with misaligned optical paths. In the experiments, the frequency of the Littman-Metcalf configuration ECDL is locked at the transition of the Rb atomic vapor, and the frequency fluctuation is suppressed from 8 to less than 0.5 MHz peak to peak. It is shown that this scheme is simple, robust, low cost, and it shows promise for use in a variety of related applications.

RESUMO

Logarithmic-conversion data processing used in wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) with a current-modulated diode laser as its source is analyzed and compared with second-to-first ratio detection. Analytic Fourier coefficients of logarithmic-converted residual amplitude modulation (RAM) of a light source are given. An experimental setup for methane absorption detection at 1650 nm is described. It is shown theoretically and experimentally that logarithmic-converted WMS cannot only eliminate the fluctuation of received light power, but also improve the signal-to-noise ratio significantly.

RESUMO

Repetition rate fluctuation is one of the main drawbacks of the low-threshold stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) Q-switched fiber laser. A method to stabilize the repetition rate is proposed in this paper by injecting a square-wave modulated light. It is measured experimentally that variance of the repetition rate can be improved from ~20% to ~1% of the period. It is also found that effectiveness of the method depends on modulation frequency and duty cycle of the injection. Its working mechanism is analyzed qualitatively.

RESUMO

A dissolved oxygen sensor made of plastic optical fiber as the substrate and dichlorotris (1, 10-phenanthroline) ruthenium as a fluorescence indicator is studied. Oxygen quenching characteristics of both intensity and phase were measured; the obtained characteristics showed deviation from the linear relation described by the Stern-Volmer equation. A two-layer model is proposed to explain the deviation, and main parameters can be deduced with the model.

RESUMO

Output power fluctuations in a grating external cavity diode laser with Littman configuration are described, showing peculiar chaotic behaviors of self-pulsation at the L-I curve kink points. Different spectral characteristics with multiple peaks are observed at upper and lower state of the self-pulsation. It is found also that P-N junction voltage jumps in a same pace with the pulsation. The observed phenomena reflect competition between different longitudinal modes, and transient variation of transverse modes in addition. These experimental results may contain information about the mechanisms of the chaotic instability in strong filtered feedback semiconductor lasers.

RESUMO

Specklegram in multimode fiber has successfully been used as a sensor for detecting mechanical disturbance. Speckles in a multimode pure silica grapefruit fiber are observed and compared to that of a step-index multimode fiber, showing different features between them. The sensitivities to external disturbance of two kinds of fiber were measured, based on single-multiple-single mode (SMS) fiber structure. Experimental results show that the grapefruit fiber shows higher sensitivity than does the step-index multimode fiber. The transmission spectrum of the grapefruit fiber was measured as well, showing some oscillation features that are significantly different from that of a step-index multimode fiber. The experiments may provide suggestions to understand the mechanisms of light propagation in grapefruit fibers.

RESUMO

A specklegram in a multimode fiber (MMF) has successfully been used as a sensor for detecting external disturbance. Our experiments showed that the sensitivity in the sensor with a multiple longitudinal-mode laser as its source was much higher than that with a single longitudinal-mode laser. In addition, the near-field pattern observations indicated that the coupling between different transverse modes in the MMF is quite weak. Based on the experimental results, a theoretical model for the speckle formation is proposed, taking a bend-caused phase factor into consideration. It is shown in the theoretical analysis that the interferences between different longitudinal modes make a larger contribution to the specklegram signals.

RESUMO

A scheme is proposed to transform an optical pulse into a millimeter-wave frequency modulation pulse by using a weak fiber Bragg grating (FBG) in a fiber-optics system. The Fourier transformation method is used to obtain the required spectrum response function of the FBG for the Gaussian pulse, soliton pulse, and Lorenz shape pulse. On the condition of the first-order Born approximation of the weak fiber grating, the relation of the refractive index distribution and the spectrum response function of the FBG satisfies the Fourier transformation, and the corresponding refractive index distribution forms are obtained for single-frequency modulation and linear-frequency modulation millimeter-wave pulse generation. The performances of the designed fiber gratings are also studied by a numerical simulation method for a supershort pulse transmission.

RESUMO

Based on the optical characteristics of PLZT (Lead Lanthanum Zirconate Titanate) electro-optic ceramic, two kinds of electro-optical deflectors, triangular electrode structure and optical phased array technology, are studied in detail by using transverse electro-optic effect. Theoretically, the electro-optic deflection characteristics and mechanisms of the deflectors are analyzed; experimentally, the optical characteristics of ceramic wafer, such as the phase modulation, the hysteresis and the electro-induced loss characteristics, are measured; a systematic experiment is designed to verify the theoretical results. The effect of temperature on the performance of deflector is also investigated. Comparing with both structure's deflectors, the optical phased array technology has a higher angle scanning resolution, however, it has a relative small deflection angle. RESUMO

We have found that the optical power of a laser diode (LD) does not change with the injected light intensity that is modulated when its injection current is at some specific values. The amplitude of optical power change of the LD varies periodically with the increase of the injection current. It is made clear through theoretical analysis that these phenomena are caused by gain compression and interband carrier absorption of the LD that depend on longitudinal mode competition, bandgap-shrinkage effects, thermal conduction, and so on. Our experimental results make it easy to eliminate optical power change of LDs. We only need to choose a proper value of the injection current.
