RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Beekeeping is common activity in the two regions in this study, Marche and Tuscany: in both regions the numbers of beekeepers, both amateur and professional, and honey production are high. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to study, through the application of simple tools, the organization of beekeeping activity so as to identify hazardous situations in the work process. METHODS: We followed the production cycle of two businesses that differed in size and work organization for a period of twelve months. Subsequently each homogeneous period was assessed via increasingly complex levels of intervention which made it possible to identify the work phases where preventive measures could be applied. RESULTS: The results obtained made it possible to detect the presence of risk situations for the musculoskeletal system of beekeepers. CONCLUSIONS: Organizational analysis in the two enterprises showed that is possible to apply easy solutions to improve safety and health at the workplace.

RESUMO

During the last Congress of the International Ergonomics Association (IEA), Beijing - China August 2009, in collaboration with World Health Organization an international group for developing a "toolkit for MSD prevention" was founded. Possible users of toolkits are: members of a health and safety committee; health and safety representatives; line supervisors; foremen; workers; government representatives; health workers implementing basic occupational health services; occupational health and safety specialists. According with ISO standard 11228 series and their ISO Application document for the Key enters and Quick Assessment (green/red conditions), our group developed a first mapping methodology of occupational hazards in handicraft, working with the support of the information technology (Excel). This methodology, utilizing specific key enters and quick evaluation, allows a simple risk estimation. So it is possible to decide for which occupational hazards will be necessary an exhaustive assessment and to which professional consultant it is better to direct them to (worker's doctor, engineer, chemical, etc.).

RESUMO

The swimmers health's protection and the maintenance of good safety standards of structures can be guaranteed under observance of rules and the well management of the structures and activities. An anonymous questionnaire, with 38 items, was used in order to analyse and better understand the knowledge and behaviour of the users of three swimming pools in Crema, Naples and Parma. Socio-demographic features were similar in the three centres. One of the most important result was that the necessity of showers and foot-bath before entering the swimming pool is not well understood (77% and 78% respectively); caps and foot bath are, instead, almost always worn (98% and 97%). Knowledge on infection diseases transmitted by water is very poor, warts and mycosis being the best known. Sport structures are places where health and wellness can be affected. It is important to underline the role of behavioural rules as the use of showers, caps, and proper shoes. Authors recognize the swimming pool regulations as a valid tool for health promotion. It must be clear and easily understood and it has to be linked to a proper education pathway of all users and employees.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a mobile laminar airflow (LAF) unit in reducing bacterial contamination at the surgical area in an operating theatre supplied with turbulent air ventilation. Bacterial sedimentation was evaluated during 76 clean urological laparotomies; in 34 of these, a mobile LAF unit was added. During each operation, settle plates were placed at four points in the operating theatre (one at the patient area and three at the perimeter), a nitrocellulose membrane was placed on the instrument table and an additional membrane near the wound. During four operations, particle counting was performed to detect particles > or =0.5 microm. Mean bacterial sedimentation on the nitrocellulose membrane on the instrument table was 2730 cfu/m(2)/h under standard ventilation conditions, whereas it decreased significantly to a mean of 305 cfu/m(2)/h when the LAF unit was used, i.e. within the suggested limit for ultraclean operating theatres (P=0.0001). The membrane near the wound showed a bacterial sedimentation of 4031 cfu/m(2)/h without the LAF unit and 1608 cfu/m(2)/h with the unit (P=0.0001). Particle counts also showed a reduction when the LAF unit was used. No significant difference was found at the four points in the operating theatre between samplings performed with, and without, the LAF unit. Use of a mobile LAF unit with turbulent air ventilation can reduce bacterial contamination at the surgical area in high-risk operations (e.g. prosthesis implant).

RESUMO

The particular chromophoric structure of C(70)Ph(10), which consists of two cage-centered π-electron systems, makes its photophysical properties an exception to those found for other phenylated [70]fullerenes C(70)Ph(2n) (n=2-4). For these other C(70)Ph(2n) species, their intrinsic photophysical properties undergo smooth transitions as a function of n.

RESUMO

Flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) are modern production facilities with easy adaptability to variable production plans and goals. These systems may exhibit deadlock situations occurring when a circular wait arises because each piece in a set requires a resource currently held by another job in the same set. Several authors have proposed different policies to control resource allocation in order to avoid deadlock problems. These approaches are mainly based on some formal models of manufacturing systems, such as Petri nets (PNs), directed graphs, etc. Since they describe various peculiarities of the FMS operation in a modular and systematic way, PNs are the most extensively used tool to model such systems. On the other hand, digraphs are more synthetic than PNs because their vertices are just the system resources. So, digraphs describe the interactions between jobs and resources only, while neglecting other details on the system operation. The aim of this paper is to show the tight connections between the two approaches to the deadlock problem, by proposing a unitary framework that links graph-theoretic and PN models and results. In this context, we establish a direct correspondence between the structural elements of the PN (empty siphons) and those of the digraphs (maximal-weight zero-outdegree strong components) characterizing a deadlock occurrence. The paper also shows that the avoidance policies derived from digraphs can be implemented by controlled PNs.

RESUMO

Elevated plasma levels of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) (as assessed by a radio-immunoassay), were found in 7/11 patients with AIDS or AIDS-related Complex (ARC), evaluated because of prolonged intractable diarrhea with either an infectious (6 cases) or a non-infectious (5 cases) etiology. Six subjects have been treated with the somatostatin analogue octreotide, which gave both a favourable clinical response and a significant reduction in plasma VIP concentrations. Evaluation of plasma VIP levels may provide a pathophysiological basis for explaining the efficacy of octreotide therapy in HIV-infected patients suffering from both infectious and non-infectious refractory diarrhea.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate plasma levels of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) in AIDS patients with refractory idiopathic diarrhoea, and to assess the role of treatment with octreotide. PATIENTS: Three AIDS patients were evaluated for severe watery diarrhoea of 2-6 months' duration, which was complicated by weight loss, weakness, and fluid and electrolyte abnormalities. They had not shown a significant response to several regimens of empirical antimicrobial chemotherapy, or symptomatic antidiarrhoeal treatment. METHODS: A complete diagnostic examination, including repeated microbiological evaluation and radiological, ultrasonographic, endoscopic and histological examination, was performed. Plasma levels of VIP were determined by radioimmunoassay and compared with concentrations in a group of healthy subjects. RESULTS: Since no clinically significant results were obtained from standard diagnostic evaluation and empirical therapeutical attempts, idiopathic refractory diarrhoea was diagnosed. Plasma concentrations of VIP were moderately elevated in all three subjects examined, with levels of 11.5, 17.5 and 9.5 pmol/l (values < 8.8 pmol/l in the control group). One patient received 50-100 micrograms octreotide three times daily subcutaneously for 6 months, resulting in complete resolution of diarrhoea and significant improvement in body weight and quality of life, together with a reduction in VIP concentration to within normal values. CONCLUSIONS: Although the somatostatin analogue octreotide has been used successfully in the management of both infectious and non-infectious AIDS-related diarrhoea, gastrointestinal neuroendocrine function and circulating humoral mediators of diarrhoea have not hitherto been investigated extensively in HIV-infected subjects. Our data on the association of idiopathic secretory diarrhoea and elevated plasma VIP levels provide a possible pathophysiological rationale for identifying AIDS patients whose refractory diarrhoea may be more responsive to octreotide treatment.

RESUMO

In this paper results are presented of errors in spatial localization found after encircling procedures for retinal detachment both in the operated and in the normal eye. Also changes in spatial localization were found in strabismus patients in which a stretch on the operated muscle was exerted after an adjustable recession. In both groups of patients a manipulation of the eye muscle was performed without inducing an eye muscle imbalance in the retinal detachment patients and without modifying the eye position in the strabismus patients in which a stretch was exerted. These data provide further evidence in favour of the role of proprioceptive information in space perception.

RESUMO

The contact of tubular bodies and cytofilaments with ribosome microcrystals from chick embryos incubated at 5 degrees C, was investigated by negative staining. It is revealed that for a good observation the time of fixation in glutaraldehyde was a critical point. It is suggested that tubular bodies and cytofilaments are engaged in the transport of ribosomes and ribosome tetramers.

RESUMO

Chick embryos are homogenized in order to analyse ribosome crystallization. Ribosome crystallization has been induced by hypothermic treatment in chick embryos homogenate. Tetramers and crystals were produced by gradually inducing the temperature over a span of 10 h to 4 degrees C. It has been observed that the concentration of KCl in the buffer is a critical point. It is suggested that the nuclear fraction is engaged in ribosome crystallization.
