RESUMO

PURPOSE: Large scintillation crystals-based gamma cameras play a crucial role in nuclear medicine imaging. In this study, a large field-of-view (FOV) gamma detector consisting of 48 square PMTs developed using a new readout electronics, reducing 48 (6 × 8) analog signals to 14 (6 + 8) analog sums of each row and column, with reduced complexity and cost while preserving image quality. METHODS: All 14 analog signals were converted to digital signals using AD9257 high-speed analog to digital (ADC) converters driven by the SPARTAN-6 family of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA) in order to calculate the signal integrals. The positioning algorithm was based on the digital correlated signal enhancement (CSE) algorithm implemented in the acquisition software. The performance characteristics of the developed gamma camera were measured using the NEMA NU 1-2018 standards. RESULTS: The measured energy resolution of the developed detector was 8.7 % at 140 keV, with an intrinsic spatial resolution of 3.9 mm. The uniformity was within 0.6 %, while the linearity was within 0.1 %. CONCLUSION: The performance evaluation demonstrated that the developed detector has suitable specifications for high-end nuclear medicine imaging.

BACKGROUND: A gamma probe is a handheld device used for intraoperative interventions following interstitial injection of a radiotracer to locate regional lymph nodes through the external detection of radiation. This work reports on the design and performance evaluation of a novel fully integrated gamma probe (GammaPen), recently developed by our group. MATERIALS AND METHODS: GammaPen is an all-in-one pocket gamma probe with low weight and adequate dimensions, consisting of a detector, a control unit and output all together. The detector module consists of a cylindrical Thallium-activated Cesium Iodide [CsI (Tl)] crystal optically coupled to a Silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), shielded using Tungsten housing on side and back faces. The electronics of the probe consists of two small boards to handle signal processing and analog peak detection tasks. A number of parameters, including probe sensitivity in air/water, spatial resolution in air/water, angular resolution in air/water, and side and back shielding effectiveness, were measured to evaluate the performance of the probe based on NEMA NU3-2004 standards. RESULTS: The sensitivity of the probe in air at distances of 10, 30, and 50 mm is 18784, 3500, and 1575 cps/MBq. The sensitivity in scattering medium was also measured at distances of 10, 30, and 50 mm as 17,680, 3050, and 1104 cps/MBq. The spatial and angular resolutions in scattering medium were 47 mm and 87 degree at 30 mm distance from the probe, while they were 40 mm and 77 degree in air. The detector shielding effectiveness and leakage sensitivity are 99.91% and 0.09%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The performance characterization showed that GammaPen can be used effectively for sentinel lymph node localization. The probe was successfully used in several surgical interventions by an experienced surgeon confirming its suitability in a clinical setting.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to determine the facial anatomical landmarks, in order of accuracy, closest to the midline of the face, as well as oral cavity midline, and to specify which intraoral anatomical landmarks are closer to the dental midline. METHODS: Three commonly used anatomical landmarks including nasion, nose, and philtrum tips were marked clinically in 108 subjects. A frontal full-face digital image was used for midline analysis in accordance with the esthetic frame. Deviations from the facial and oral midlines were measured for the three clinical landmarks. Dental midline was considered as the fourth landmark. Alginate impressions were taken, and casts were analyzed under standardized conditions. The labial frenum and incisive papilla were marked. Cast images were taken and analyzed. RESULTS: Data showed difference between the mean ratios of the selected anatomical landmarks and the facial and oral midlines (p≤0/05). The anatomical landmark hierarchies, in proximity to the facial midline, are commissural midlines, nasion, philtrum tip, nose tip, and dental midline, respectively. The anatomical landmark hierarchies, in proximity to the commissural midline, include dental midline, philtrum tip, nose tip, and nasion. The labial frenum was less deviated from the dental midline than the incisive papilla. CONCLUSION: With respect to shortcomings, the results showed that all of the anatomical landmarks were deviated from the facial and oral midlines. The order of proximity of the anatomical landmarks to the facial midline was as follows: commissural midline, nasion, philtrum, and dental midline.

Black TiO2 as a solar-driven photocatalyst has attracted enormous attention from scientists and engineers in water and wastewater treatment field. Most of the methods used for the preparation of black TiO2 are thermal treatment under a hydrogen atmosphere. Nevertheless, it is well known that working with hydrogen is not safe and needs special maintenance. Here, for the first time, we prepared black TiO2 by sintering P25 pellets at different temperatures (500-800 °C) under a vacuum atmosphere that showed the same performance with the prepared black TiO2 under a hydrogen atmosphere. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible deep resistivity sounding techniques. The differences between the formation of oxygen vacancy density and color turning in sintered powder and pellet were also studied. The results showed that the color of the P25 powder became darker after sintering but not completely turning to black, whereas the P25 pellets completely turned black after sintering. The resultant black TiO2 was used for the photocatalytic degradation of the acetaminophen (ACE) in aqueous solution under AM 1.5G solar light illumination; it was found that the P25 pellet sintered in 500 °C had the highest photocatalytic performance for ACE degradation under AM 1.5G solar light illumination. The photocatalytic activity of prepared black TiO2 under vacuum and hydrogen atmospheres was also compared together; the results showed that photocatalytic activities of both samples were so close together. The existence of the oxygen vacancy after 6 months and long and short-term stability (by application for photocatalytic degradation of ACE in an aqueous solution) of the black TiO2 pellets was also studied; the results showed that the TiO2 pellets in aqueous phase had acceptable stability.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac contraction significantly degrades quality and quantitative accuracy of gated myocardial perfusion SPECT (MPS) images. In this study, we aimed to explore different techniques in motion-compensated temporal processing of MPS images and their impact on image quality and quantitative accuracy. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 50 patients without known heart condition underwent gated MPS. 3D motion compensation methods using Motion Freezing by Cedars Sinai (MF), Log-domain Diffeomorphic Demons (LDD) and Free-Form Deformation (FFD) were applied to warp all image phases to fit the end-diastolic (ED) phase. Afterwards, myocardial wall thickness, myocardial to blood pool contrast, and image contrast-to noise ratio (CNR) were measured in summed images with no motion compensation (NoMC) and compensated images (MF, LDD and FFD). Total Perfusion Defect (TPD) was derived from Cedars-Sinai software, on the basis of sex-specific normal limits. RESULT: Left ventricle (LV) lateral wall thickness was reduced after applying motion compensation (p < 0.05). Myocardial to blood pool contrast and CNR in compensated images were greater than NoMC (p < 0.05). TPD_LDD was in good agreement with the corresponding TPD_MF (p = 0.13). CONCLUSION: All methods have improved image quality and quantitative performance relative to NoMC. LDD and FFD are fully automatic and do not require any manual intervention, while MF is dependent on contour definition. In terms of diagnostic parameters LDD is in good agreement with MF which is a clinically accepted method. Further investigation along with diagnostic reference standards, in order to specify diagnostic value of each technique is recommended.

PURPOSE: We developed a high performance portable gamma camera platform dedicated to identification of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) and radio-guided surgery for cancer patients. In this work, we present the performance characteristics of SURGEOSIGHT-I, the first version of this platform that can intra-operatively provide high-resolution images of the surveyed areas. METHODS: At the heart of this camera, there is a 43×43 array of pixelated sodium-activated cesium iodide (CsI(Na)) scintillation crystal with 1×1mm(2) pixel size and 5mm thickness coupled to a Hamamatsu H8500 flat-panel multi-anode (64 channels) photomultiplier tube. The probe is equipped with a hexagonal parallel-hole lead collimator with 1.2mm holes. The detector, collimator, and the associated front-end electronics are encapsulated in a common housing referred to as head. RESULTS: Our results show a count rate of ∼41kcps for 20% count loss. The extrinsic energy resolution was measured as 20.6% at 140keV. The spatial resolution and the sensitivity of the system on the collimator surface was measured as 2.2mm and 142cps/MBq, respectively. In addition, the integral and differential uniformity, after uniformity correction, in useful field-of-view (UFOV) were measured 4.5% and 4.6%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This system can be used for a number of clinical applications including SLN biopsy and radiopharmaceutical-guided surgery.

PURPOSE: Given increasing efforts in biomedical research utilizing molecular imaging methods, development of dedicated high-performance small-animal SPECT systems has been growing rapidly in the last decade. In the present work, we propose and assess an alternative concept for SPECT imaging enabling desktop open-gantry imaging of small animals. METHODS: The system, PERSPECT, consists of an imaging desk, with a set of tilted detector and pinhole collimator placed beneath it. The object to be imaged is simply placed on the desk. Monte Carlo (MC) and analytical simulations were utilized to accurately model and evaluate the proposed concept and design. Furthermore, a dedicated image reconstruction algorithm, finite-aperture-based circular projections (FABCP), was developed and validated for the system, enabling more accurate modeling of the system and higher quality reconstructed images. Image quality was quantified as a function of different tilt angles in the acquisition and number of iterations in the reconstruction algorithm. Furthermore, more complex phantoms including Derenzo, Defrise, and mouse whole body were simulated and studied. RESULTS: The sensitivity of the PERSPECT was 207 cps/MBq. It was quantitatively demonstrated that for a tilt angle of 30°, comparable image qualities were obtained in terms of normalized squared error, contrast, uniformity, noise, and spatial resolution measurements, the latter at ∼0.6 mm. Furthermore, quantitative analyses demonstrated that 3 iterations of FABCP image reconstruction (16 subsets/iteration) led to optimally reconstructed images. CONCLUSIONS: The PERSPECT, using a novel imaging protocol, can achieve comparable image quality performance in comparison with a conventional pinhole SPECT with the same configuration. The dedicated FABCP algorithm, which was developed for reconstruction of data from the PERSPECT system, can produce high quality images for small-animal imaging via accurate modeling of the system as incorporated in the forward- and back-projection steps. Meanwhile, the developed MC model and the analytical simulator of the system can be applied for further studies on development and evaluation of the system.

Small-animal single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) system plays an important role in the field of drug development and investigation of potential drugs in the preclinical phase. The small-animal High-Resolution SPECT (HiReSPECT) scanner has been recently designed and developed based on compact and high-resolution detectors. The detectors are based on a high-resolution parallel hole collimator, a cesium iodide (sodium-activated) pixelated crystal array and two H8500 position-sensitive photomultiplier tubes. In this system, a full set of data cor- rections such as energy, linearity, and uniformity, together with resolution recovery option in reconstruction algorithms, are available. In this study, we assessed the performance of the system based on NEMA-NU1-2007 standards for pixelated detector cameras. Characterization of the HiReSPECT was performed by measure- ment of the physical parameters including planar and tomographic performance. The planar performance of the system was characterized with flood-field phantom for energy resolution and uniformity. Spatial resolution and sensitivity were evaluated as functions of distance with capillary tube and cylindrical source, respectively. Tomographic spatial resolution was characterized as a function of radius of rotation (ROR). A dedicated hot rod phantom and image quality phantom was used for the evaluation of overall tomographic quality of the HiReSPECT. The results showed that the planar spatial resolution was ~ 1.6 mm and ~ 2.3 mm in terms of full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) along short- and long-axis dimensions, respectively, when the source was placed on the detector surface. The integral uniformity of the system after uniformity correction was 1.7% and 1.2% in useful field of view (UFOV) and central field of view (CFOV), respectively. System sensitivity on the collimator surface was 1.31 cps/µCi and didn't vary significantly with distance. Mean tomographic spatial resolution was measured ~ 1.7 mm FWHM at the radius of rotation of 25 mm with dual-head configuration.The measured performance demonstrated that the HiReSPECT scanner has acceptable image quality and, hence, is well suited for preclinical molecular imaging research.

The small-animal High-Resolution SPECT (HiReSPECT) is a dedicated dual-head gamma camera recently designed and developed in our laboratory for imaging of murine models. Each detector is composed of an array of 1.2 × 1.2 mm(2) (pitch) pixelated CsI(Na) crystals. Two position-sensitive photomultiplier tubes (H8500) are coupled to each head's crystal. In this paper, we report on a resolution-recovery-embedded image reconstruction code applicable to the system and present the experimental results achieved using different phantoms and mouse scans. Collimator-detector response functions (CDRFs) were measured via a pixel-driven method using capillary sources at finite distances from the head within the field of view (FOV). CDRFs were then fitted by independent Gaussian functions. Thereafter, linear interpolations were applied to the standard deviation (σ) values of the fitted Gaussians, yielding a continuous map of CDRF at varying distances from the head. A rotation-based maximum-likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM) method was used for reconstruction. A fast rotation algorithm was developed to rotate the image matrix according to the desired angle by means of pre-generated rotation maps. The experiments demonstrated improved resolution utilizing our resolution-recovery-embedded image reconstruction. While the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) radial and tangential resolution measurements of the system were over 2 mm in nearly all positions within the FOV without resolution recovery, reaching around 2.5 mm in some locations, they fell below 1.8 mm everywhere within the FOV using the resolution-recovery algorithm. The noise performance of the system was also acceptable; the standard deviation of the average counts per voxel in the reconstructed images was 6.6% and 8.3% without and with resolution recovery, respectively.

BACKGROUND: Mustard agents are of the major chemical agents used during Iran-Iraq war. There are no reports concerning long-term cardiac effects. The aim was to assess the scintigraphic pattern of myocardial perfusion in patients intoxicated with blistering gases. METHOD: We analyzed myocardial perfusion scans of 22 consecutive intoxicated patients (21 male and 1 female, all < 44 years) and compared results with 14 controls. Only those patients and controls were entered whose 10-year risk of coronary artery disease (Framingham criteria) was <5%. Also only those patients were experimented upon that had currently other confirmed complications of intoxication (respiratory, cutaneous and ocular complications). All patients underwent a 1-day stress and rest protocol using (99m)Tc-MIBI. Images were assessed visually and quantitatively using Cedars Sinai program. RESULTS: The prevalence of nonhomogeneity of uptake and left and right ventricular enlargement in both visual and quantitative analyses were higher in the mustard exposed patients than unexposed controls. The prevalence of ischemia was higher in the exposed patients (P < 0.05). Cavity to myocardium ratio, as an established and validated measure of ejection fraction, was also significantly lower in the warfare patients than the controls. CONCLUSION: In so far it lies in our knowledge, this is the first report concerning the scintigraphic pattern of myocardial perfusion in mustard intoxicated patients. Based on the results, the pattern of myocardial perfusion in these patients is significantly different from normal controls, which could resemble either coronary artery disease or mild cardiomyopathic changes.
