OBJECTIVE: The pandemic disease by SARS-CoV-2 infection does not have an effective treatment. To prevent the disease, scientists developed vaccines that the clinicians use as an emergency licensed vaccine. The objective of this study was to determine the side effects in personnel vaccinated at the Military Central Hospital of Mexico with the BNT162b2 vaccine. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study included the subjects who had received both doses of the BNT162b2 vaccine between December 2020 and February 2021. We asked about the side effects after the first and the second vaccine doses. One group had no history of COVID-19, and the second had a history of COVID-19. ANTI-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were measured by the immunodetection technique in the second group only. RESULTS: We included 946 participants, 62% were women, and 80% were without comorbidities; 680 were included in the first group, and only 266 were in the second group. After the first dose, 77% of the first group and 86% of the second group presented some side effects. After the second dose, 84% of the first group and 89% of the second group showed some side effects. The main side effect was mild pain. All participants (126) were IgG positive, and only 26.9% were IgM positive at 17.5 days (12.8 days, 20.3 days) after the second dose. CONCLUSIONS: There is a positive correlation between side effects after the first dose in patients with a history of previous SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to those who did not. Nevertheless, this correlation is not present after the second dose. The low percentage of IgM could be related to the time interval between vaccination and sample measure.

Tropane alkaloids and terpenoids are widely used in the medicine and pharmaceutic industry and evolved as chemical defenses against herbivores and pathogens in the annual herb Datura stramonium (Solanaceae). Here, we present the first draft genomes of two plants from contrasting environments of D. stramonium. Using these de novo assemblies, along with other previously published genomes from 11 Solanaceae species, we carried out comparative genomic analyses to provide insights on the genome evolution of D. stramonium within the Solanaceae family, and to elucidate adaptive genomic signatures to biotic and abiotic stresses in this plant. We also studied, in detail, the evolution of four genes of D. stramonium-Putrescine N-methyltransferase, Tropinone reductase I, Tropinone reductase II and Hyoscyamine-6S-dioxygenase-involved in the tropane alkaloid biosynthesis. Our analyses revealed that the genomes of D. stramonium show signatures of expansion, physicochemical divergence and/or positive selection on proteins related to the production of tropane alkaloids, terpenoids, and glycoalkaloids as well as on R defensive genes and other important proteins related with biotic and abiotic pressures such as defense against natural enemies and drought.

The annual herb, Datura stramonium, is a member of the Solanaceae family. In this study, we report the chloroplast genomes of two Mexican plants of D. stramonium. Both chloroplast genomes of D. stramonium (GenBank accessions: MT610896 and MT610897) were assembled as a circular molecule. The genome size of both plants was similar (155,884 bp). The overall GC content was 38.59% for both genomes. Both chloroplast genomes contained 85 protein-coding sequences (CDS), 131 genes, 8 rRNA genes, and 38 tRNA genes. Thirty-nine microsatellites (SSRs) and 42 long tandem repeats were also identified for both genomes. The phylogenetic relationship between D. stramonium and related Solanaceae species revealed four main groups; Nicotiana, Datura, Capsicum, and Solanum clades. This species tree is consistent with other Solanaceae species trees already published.

According to the World Health Organization, Salmonella is one of the most important zoonotic foodborne pathogens. Poultry products are thought to be the main source of Salmonella, which means that it is necessary to control Salmonella at the pre-harvest stage. Bacteriophages, acting as host-specific parasites of bacterial cells, represent one of the alternatives to antibiotics that can contribute to food safety and security. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of the bacteriophage cocktail SalmoFREE® to control Salmonella on a commercial broiler farm. We assessed the relationship between the use of SalmoFREE® and productivity parameters (feed conversion, weight gain, homogeneity). Two field trials (trial 1 n = 34,986; trial 2 n = 34,680) were carried out under commercial rearing conditions on a Colombian broiler farm with a record of Salmonella presence. Each trial comprised 2 control chicken houses and 2 experimental ones. SalmoFREE® and a control suspension were delivered in the drinking water at 3 time points in the production cycle, and the presence of Salmonella was assessed in cloacal swabs the day before and after the treatments. Results revealed that SalmoFREE® controls the incidence of Salmonella and does not affect the animals nor the production parameters, demonstrating its efficacy and innocuity at the production scale. We detected phage-specific genes in samples of total DNA extracted from ceca after the treatment with SalmoFREE®, and tested for the appearance of cocktail-resistant Salmonella, which showed to be an uncommon event. These results contribute relevant information to the adoption of phage therapy as an alternative to growth-promoter antibiotics on poultry farms.

Criollo-type cacao trees are an important pool of genes with potential to be used in cacao breeding and selection programs. For that reason, we assessed the diversity and population structure of Criollo-type trees (108 cultivars with Criollo phenotypic characteristics and 10 Criollo references) using 12 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Cultivars were selected from 7 demes in the Soconusco region of southern Mexico. SSRs amplified 74 alleles with an average of 3.6 alleles per population. The overall populations showed an average observed heterozygosity of 0.28, indicating heterozygote deficiency (average fixation index F = 0.50). However, moderate allelic diversity was found within populations (Shannon index for all populations I = 0.97). Bayesian method analysis determined 2 genetic clusters (K = 2) within individuals. In concordance, an assignment test grouped 37 multilocus genotypes (including 10 references) into a first cluster (Criollo), 54 into a second (presumably Amelonado), and 27 admixed individuals unassigned at the 90% threshold likely corresponding to the Trinitario genotype. This classification was supported by the principal coordinate analysis and analysis of molecular variance, which showed 12% of variation among populations (FST = 0.123, P < 0.0001). Sampled demes sites (1- 7) in the Soconusco region did not show any evidence of clustering by geographic location, and this was supported by the Mantel test (Rxy = 0.54, P = 0.120). Individuals with high Criollo lineage planted in Soconusco farms could be an important reservoir of genes for future breeding programs searching for fine, taste, flavor, and aroma cocoa.

Objetivo: Determinar las posibles interacciones farmacológicas de las hojas de Maytenus macrocarpa, con fármacos estimulantes e inhibitorios de la motilidad intestinal. Métodos: Se utilizaron 110 ratones albinos machos, con pesos medios de 25 g, se empleó el método de Arbos y col, se administró carbón activado al 5


vía oral, dosis de 0.1ml/10g, como marcador intestinal. Los grupos experimentales fueron: control (agua destilada 0,3ml), hojas de chuchuhuasi 1 (500mg/kg), hojas de chuchuhuasi 2 (3000mg/kg), atropina (1,5mg/kg), loperamida (5mg/kg), neostigmina (0,4mg/kg), metoclopramida (10mg/kg), hojas de chuchuhuasi 1 con metoclopramida, hojas de chuchuhuasi 1 con loperamida, hojas de chuchuhuasi 2 con metoclopramida y hojas de chuchuhuasi 2 con loperamida. Para la validación estadística se usó la prueba de Wilconxon, ANOVA y Tukey. Resultados: El porcentaje de recorrido intestinal de carbón activado fue de 27,04, 34,15, 31,66, 25,57, 15,89, 43,30, 33,99, 32,40, 27,90, 49,34 y 25,36 respectivamente, el test de ANOVA de dos colas revelo una p=0,0007. El test de Tukey indico p<0.05 versus el control para neostigmina, loperamida y la interacción chuchuhuasi 3000 mg/kg con metoclopramida, en este último, el test de Wilconxon presento un valor p<0,05. Conclusiones: Se observó interacciones farmacológicas de antagonismo sobre la motilidad intestinal, entre chuchuhuasi y Loperamida y sinergismo entre chuchuhuasi y metoclopramida.


Objectives: To determine the possible pharmacological interactions from the leaves of Maytenus macrocarpa with inhibitory and stimulating bowel motility drugs. Methods: We used 110 male albino mice with average weight of 25g, Arbos and others method was applied. Activated charcoal was administered at 5


at dose of 0.1ml/10g, as an intestinal marker. The experimental groups included 0.1 ml/10 g of distilled water, leave extract of M. macrocarpa 1 (500mg/kg), leave extract of M. macrocarpa 2 (3000 mg/kg), 1,5mg/kg of atropine, 5mg/kg of loperamide, 0.4mg/kg of neostigmine, 10mg/kg of metoclopramide, leave extract of M. macrocarpa 1 with metoclopramide, leave extract of M. macrocarpa 1 with loperamide, leave extract of M. macrocarpa 2 with metoclopramide and leave extract of M. macrocarpa 2 with loperamide. The statistical validation was based on Wilconxon, ANOVA and Tukey test. Results: The intestinal charcoal run percentage was 27.04, 34.15, 31.66, 25.57, 15.89, 43.30, 33.99, 32.40, 27.9, 49.34 and 25.36 respectively. The ANOVA test result in p= 0.0007. The Tukey test indicated p <0.05 versus the control group for neostigmine, loperamide, and the interaction between leave extract of M. macrocarpa 2 with metoclopramide, for the last the Wilcoxon test result in p <0.05. Conclusions: It was observed antagonism drug interactions on gastrointestinal motility between leaves extract of M. macrocarpa with loperamide and synergism interactions with metoclopramide.

Whey protein hydrolysate (WPH) is capable of increasing muscle glycogen reserves and of concentrating the glucose transporter in the plasma membrane (PM). The objective of this study was to determine which WPH components could modulate translocation of the glucose transporter GLUT-4 to the PM of animal skeletal muscle. Forty-nine animals were divided into 7 groups (n=7) and received by oral gavage 30% glucose plus 0.55 g/kg body mass of the following WPH components: (a) control; (b) WPH; (c) L-isoleucine; (d) L-leucine; (e) L-leucine plus L-isoleucine; (f) L-isoleucyl-L-leucine dipeptide; (g) L-leucyl-L-isoleucine dipeptide. After receiving these solutions, the animals were sacrificed and the GLUT-4 analysed by western blot. Additionally, glycogen, glycaemia, insulin and free amino acids were also determined by standard methods. Of the WPH components tested, the amino acid L-isoleucine and the peptide L-leucyl-L-isoleucine showed greater efficiency in translocating GLUT-4 to the PM and of increasing glucose capture by skeletal muscle.

Intense physical activity results in a substantial volume of stress and hence a significant probability of immunosuppression in athletes, with milk proteins being, perhaps, the most recommended protein supplements. Consumption of a probiotic cheese can attenuate immune suppression induced by exhausting exercise in rats. A popular Brazilian fresh cheese (Minas Frescal cheese) containing Lactobacillus acidophilus LA14 and Bifidobacterium longum BL05 was fed for 2wk to adult Wistar rats, which then were brought to exhaustion on the treadmill. Two hours after exhaustion, the rats were killed and material was collected for the determination of serum uric acid, total and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol fraction, total protein, triacylglycerols, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, creatine kinase, and blood cell (monocyte, lymphocyte, neutrophil, and leukocyte) counts. Exercise was efficient in reducing lymphocyte counts, irrespective of the type of ingested cheese, but the decrease in the group fed the probiotic cheese was 22% compared with 48% in the animals fed regular cheese. Monocyte counts were unaltered in the rats fed probiotic cheese compared with a significant decrease in the rats fed the regular cheese. Most importantly, ingestion of the probiotic cheese resulted in a >100% increase in serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and a 50% decrease in triacylglycerols. We conclude that probiotic Minas Frescal cheese may be a viable alternative to enhance the immune system and could be used to prevent infections, particularly those related to the physical overexertion of athletes.

We investigated the effect of increased glucose oxidase concentration as a technological option to decrease oxidative stress during the processing of probiotic yogurts. Probiotic yogurts were produced with increased concentrations of glucose oxidase (0, 250, 500, 750, or 1,000 mg/kg) and submitted to physicochemical and microbiological analysis at 1, 15, and 30 d of refrigerated storage. Higher concentrations of glucose oxidase (750 and 1,000 mg/kg) and a longer storage time were found to have an influence on the characteristics of the probiotic yogurt, contributing to more extensive postacidification, an increase in the dissolved oxygen level, and higher proteolysis. In addition, increased production of aroma compounds (diacetyl and acetaldehyde) and organic acids (mainly lactic acid) and a decrease in the probiotic bacteria count were reported. The use of glucose oxidase was a feasible option to minimize oxidative stress in probiotic yogurts. However, supplementation with excessive amounts of the enzyme may be ineffective, because insufficient substrate (glucose) is present for its action. Consumer tests should be performed to evaluate changes in the sensory attributes of the probiotic yogurts with increased supplementation of glucose oxidase. In addition, packaging systems with different permeability to oxygen should be evaluated.

INTRODUCTION: While enteral diets for hospitalized patients normally follow nutrient composition guidelines, more than 90% of hospitalized patients receive oral diets with unknown mineral composition. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the mineral contents and adequacy of three types of oral diets (regular, blend and soft) and complementary snacks offered to patients of a Brazilian hospital. METHODS: The amount of minerals was determined in two non-consecutive days in duplicate samples of breakfast, collation, lunch, snack, dinner, supper and a complementary snack meal. Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) were used to determine the adequacy of the daily amounts served to patients. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The regular diet met the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowances) requirements only for Mn, P and Se, while the blend diet was deficient in Ca, K and Mg, and the soft diet met RDA requirements only for P and Zn. Iron was below the RDA requirement in all diets for women in fertile age, and Na was above the safe limit of intake (UL) in all the diets. The use of complementary snack was effective in meeting RDA requirements for Cu in the regular diet, and Mn and Se in the soft diet, but promoted overconsumption of Na. CONCLUSIONS: Evident nutritional imbalances have been detected at a key interphase between nutrition and public health services, but a solution does not appear to be insurmountable. A permanent nutritional evaluation of hospital oral diets should be an integral part of routine health care in order to speed the recovery of the hospitalized patient and dispel eventual risks due to critical mineral imbalances.

The complex metabolism of probiotic bacteria requires several technological options to guarantee the functionally of probiotic dairy foods during the shelf life. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of the supplementation of increasing amounts of Lactobacillus acidophilus (0, 0.4, or 0.8 g/L of milk) on the physicochemical parameters and sensory acceptance of Minas fresh cheese. In addition, the sensory acceptance of probiotic cheeses was assessed using a consumer test and compared with commercial cheeses (conventional and probiotic). High counts (9.11 to 9.42 log cfu/g) of L. acidophilus were observed throughout the shelf life, which contributed to the maintenance of its probiotic status and resulted in lower pH values and greater production of organic acids. The probiotic cheeses presented lower scores for appearance, aroma, and texture compared with conventional cheeses. Internal preference mapping explained almost 60% of the total variation of the data and showed a large number of consumers concentrated near the conventional cheeses, demonstrating greater preference for these samples. The findings indicated that some negative sensory effects could occur when high level of supplementation with L. acidophilus is used in probiotic cheese processing.

The genetic diversity of Mesoamerican populations of the biofuel plant Jatropha curcas, using the fatty acids of the seeds as chemical markers was studied. The oil content of the whole seed in 135 accessions from 38 sites varied between 8.020% and 54.28%. The prevalent fatty acids were oleic acid (18:1) and linoleic acid (18:2), and the proportion of unsaturated fatty acids varied between 74.5% and 83.7%. A study with cloned plants grown in common garden showed that both the content of oil as well as the proportion of fatty acids are highly inheritable, therefore these chemical markers are valid for estimating the genetic diversity of the species. An analysis of principal components showed that the fatty acids that contribute more to the variance are stearic, oleic, linoleic, methylpalmitic, gadoleic and ricinoleic. The populations were classified in ten groups when the data were analyzed for fatty acids by analysis of clusters, showing the elevated genetic variation in natural populations of this native species of Mesoamerica. A discriminant analysis separated the populations in accordance with their geographic origin, which was verified with a Mantel test. Using the Monmonier's algorithm two genetic barriers between the populations were identified. The results are discussed in light of their microevolutionary significance.

Habitat fragmentation can change the ecological context of populations, rupturing genetic connectivity among them, changing genetic structure, and increasing the loss of genetic diversity. We analyzed mating system and pollen structure in two population fragments and two continuous forest populations of Dieffenbachia seguine (Araceae), an insect-pollinated understory herb in the tropical rain forest of Los Tuxtlas, México, using nine allozyme loci. Mating system analysis indicated almost complete outcrossing but some inbreeding among the adults. Pollen structure analysis indicated highly restricted pollen flow, both within and among populations. We showed that the effective pollination neighborhood was small in all populations, and slightly (though not significantly) smaller in fragments, partially as a consequence of an increase in density of reproductive individuals in those fragments. Using assignment analysis, we showed that all populations were strongly structured, suggesting that pollen and seed flow across the Los Tuxtlas landscape has been spatially restricted, though sufficient to maintain connectedness. Forest fragmentation at Los Tuxtlas has (so far) had limited impact on pollen dynamics, despite the changing ecological context, with reduced pollinator abundance being partially offset by increased flowering density in fragments. Continued outcrossing and limited pollen immigration, coupled with more extensive seed migration, should maintain genetic connectedness in D. seguine, if fragmentation is not further exacerbated by additional deforestation.

Sinaloa State is the main producer of tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L) in Mexico where production attained 15,784 ha in 2008 (3). Fusarium wilt of tomato caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (Sacc) Snyder & Hansen causes significant yield losses in Sinaloa each year (2). Three pathotypes or races of F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici have been described: races 1, 2, and 3 (1). The purpose of this study was to determine the races of F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici present in Sinaloa and distribution of these races in the region. F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici isolates were obtained from plants showing symptoms of yellowing and necrosis of vascular bundles. Plants were sampled from 50 fields throughout the production area in Sinaloa from November 2008 to March 2009. Four differential cultivars were used to identify the races of 26 F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici isolates collected across Sinaloa: Bonny Best (susceptible to all races), UC-82-L (susceptible to races 2 and 3), F1 MH-1 (susceptible to race 3), and IR-3 (resistant to all races). A microconidial suspension was prepared for each isolate (1 × 106 CFU/ml) from cultures grown in potato dextrose broth with constant agitation (110 rpm) at 28°C for 7 days. Five 25-day-old seedlings (three fully expanded true leaves) from each differential cultivar were immersed in the appropriate microconidial suspension for 10 min, then individually transplanted into a pot containing 1 kg of sterilized commercial potting mix, and grown in a growth chamber at 25 to 28°C and 60 to 75% relative humidity for 5weeks with 14-h light/10-h darkness. Control plants (root dipped for 10 min in sterile water) were grown similarly and remained asymptomatic. Susceptible cv. Bonny Best showed typical symptoms of Fusarium wilt including epinasty, yellowing, defoliation, vascular necrosis, and wilt. None of these plants survived 25 days postinoculation for any of the isolates. All UC-82-L plants inoculated with each of the 26 isolates died before 35 days, indicating that none of the isolates was of race 1. F1 MH-1 plants only survived inoculation with 3 of the 26 isolates (11.5%), indicating that the 23 isolates that killed these plants (88.5% of the 26 isolates) were of race 3, and only 3 isolates were of race 2. All IR-3 plants inoculated with the 26 isolates survived. The isolates showed variation in response to the differential cultivar UC-82L in duration from inoculation to when the plants died (variation in isolate aggressiveness). The three F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici race 2 isolates were restricted to the Culiacan Valley, whereas the 23 F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici race 3 isolates were widely distributed across Sinaloa. Koch's postulates were confirmed by reisolating the fungus from the roots and stem base of each dead, inoculated plant (4). Phytophagous insects can use different host plant species across their geographic distribution. Within a locality, however, their feeding can be restricted to one or two plant species. If host species constitute different selective regimes to herbivorous insects, genetic differentiation and host-associated local adaptation may occur. In this study, we describe the genetic structure of the aphid Brevicoryne brassicae L. associated to Brassica campestris L. and B. oleraceae var. capitata L., two plant species that occur sympatrically in four localities in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. The aim was to determine if the aphid populations are genetically structured in relation to the plant host species, and if such differentiation is consistent among localities. The genetic description of populations was made using 11 enzyme loci using cellulose acetate electrophoresis. Aphid genotypes were surveyed in two host plant species-associated populations within each of four localities at seven polymorphic loci (eight subpopulations in total). The genetic structure was assessed at the level of subpopulations, among localities, between hosts, and pairwise comparisons of hosts within locality, using Wright F-statistics. Genetic distance among localities and between host-associated populations within each locality was also estimated. We found that overall genetic differentiation was high (FST=0.22), and that differentiation among localities (FST=0.13) was higher than differentiation between hosts (FST=0.03). All FST estimates were statistically significant. Pairwise comparisons of FST between hosts in each locality suggest high differentiation in two of them, and low but still significant differentiation in two other localities. Given that general environmental conditions are similar within localities, selection on each host species may produce genetic divergence within and among subpopulations of B. brassicae.

Chronic energy restriction, alpha-tocopherol supplementation and their interaction with exhaustive exercise were investigated. Eleven-week-old male Wistar rats (n 6x 10) were fed either a control (C), a 30 % carbohydrate-energy-restricted control (R) or an alpha-tocopherol-supplemented (S) diet for 5 months. The animals in each diet were divided into exercised (E) and non-exercised (NE) groups. Before killing, the exercised rats were required to run to exhaustion (39 (se 6), 69 (se 11) and 18 (se 2) min for the C, R and S groups, respectively). Lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances; TBARS), protein damage (reactive carbonyls) and alpha-tocopherol were determined in gastrocnemius, liver, brain and/or plasma. There was no difference in lipid peroxidation between the R and C groups, but in liver and muscle peroxidation appeared significantly lower in the S than the other two diets. TBARS in the brain were similar in all groups. On the other hand, reactive carbonyls showed that both the R and S diets reduced protein damage in the brain, while exhaustive exercise increased it. For liver and muscle, however, reactive carbonyl levels were similar in all groups. alpha-Tocopherol supplementation increased the vitamin concentrations in liver, muscle and plasma, but exercise decreased them in plasma and brain. Carbohydrate-energy restriction increased (P=0.0025) resistance to exhaustive exercise considerably without depleting stores of alpha-tocopherol or exacerbating oxidative damage in monitored tissues. It is concluded that while exhaustive exercise promotes a tissue-specific oxidative damage detectable only in brain proteins, both experimental diets tended to ameliorate this condition.

Steatite or soapstone, is a soft metamorphic rock composed mainly of talc, dolomite and actinolite, which is abundantly found and used for the manufacture of cookware in south-east Brazil. The study estimates its usage for cookware among dwellers of Ouro Preto, and assesses the possible toxicological or nutritional impact on food preparation. Pans made of steatite were purchased both in the crude (n = 6) and 'cured'forms (n = 6). Migration of Ca, Fe, Mg, Mn, Co, Al, Cr, Ni, Pb and Cd was determined for 20 sequential cooking trials, using 3 and 5% acetic acid as a food simulant. Analytical determinations were carried out by inductively coupled plasma atomic-emission spectrometry and the data treated by an individual model of random effects, simple linear regression and Pearson's correlation. About 81% of Ouro Preto's native population own soapstone cookware and, of these, 79% use the pans regularly. Mineral migration followed the general solubility of the crystalline components of the rock. Therefore, Ca, Mg, Fe and Mn were, in that order, the elements that exhibited highest migration, whereas the remaining were seen in negligible levels, except for Ni in the crude pans. The 5% solution favoured migration, whereas curing tended to restrict migration and extend durability of the pan. It is concluded that while cured soapstone pans do not offer mineral toxicity, they may contribute to the mineral nutrition of human beings.

The incorporation of plant tolerance after damage as a new alternative to cope with herbivory, as opposed to resistance, opened new avenues for our understanding of coevolution between plants and herbivores. Although genetic variation on tolerance to defoliation has been detected in some species, few studies have been undertaken with nonagricultural species. In this study, we explore in the annual weed Datura stramonium the existence of genetic variation for tolerance and fitness costs of tolerance. To determine which fitness-related trait was responsible for possible differences in tolerance, growth rate, total flower and fruit production, and the number of seeds per fruit were recorded. Inbred line replicates of D. stramonium from a population of Mexico City were exposed to four defoliation levels (0%, 10%, 30%, and 70%). Our results from a greenhouse experiment using controlled genetic material (inbred lines) indicated that significant genetic variation for tolerance was detected across defoliation environments. Defoliation reduced plant fitness from 15% to 25% in the highest levels of defoliation. Differences on tolerance among inbred lines were accounted by a differential reduction in the proportion of matured fruits across defoliation levels (up to 20%). Within defoliation levels, significant genetic variation in plant fitness suggests that tolerance could be selected. The correlation between fitness values of inbred lines in two environments (with and without damage) was positive (rg = 0.77), but not significant, suggesting absence of fitness costs for tolerance. The finding of genetic variation on tolerance might be either due to differences among inbred lines in their capability to overcome foliar damage through compensation or due to costs incurred by inducing secondary metabolites. Our results indicate the potential for norms of reaction to be selected under a gradient of herbivory pressure and highlights the importance of dissecting induced from compensatory responses when searching for potential causes of genetic variation on tolerance.

The co-circulation of all 4 dengue virus serotypes in the same community, common since the 1950s in Southeast Asia, has now become a frequent occurrence in many Caribbean Islands, Mexico, and Central and South America in the past 20 years. As a consequence, the frequency of concurrent infections would be expected to increase in these areas. To assess this, using state of the art technology, we screened viremic serum samples and mosquitoes inoculated with serum samples collected during epidemics involving multiple dengue virus serotypes in Indonesia, Mexico, and Puerto Rico for virus isolation. Of 292 samples tested, 16 (5.5%) were found to contain 2 or more dengue viruses by an indirect immunofluorescence test and/or the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) exerts a chronic carcinogenic and an acute toxic effect on animals. Whereas the mechanism for carcinogenicity is known, no mechanism has been proposed for the toxic action. Among the most prominent signs of aflatoxicosis in several species, including birds and mammals, are hypolipidaemia, hypocholesterolaemia, and hypocarotenaemia, associated with severe hepatic steatosis and weight loss. We suggest that these signs of acute imbalance of lipid metabolism can be the result of the chemical modification (blocking) of key lysyl residues on the LDL protein B-100 by the activated AFB1 molecule. Modified LDLs are not recognised by their specific receptors and thus are rejected by peripheral cells. Upon return to the liver, the modified particles bind to the sinusoidal lining cells. Lipid starvation of peripheral tissues takes place while fat accumulates in the liver. This abnormal state is maintained and reinforced by further modification of nascent apoproteins, which in turn become unable to receive a lipid load for as long as aflatoxin continues to be available in the liver.
