Abstract Introduction: Evidence suggests that herbivores, such as peccaries, shape vegetation structure and diversity through predation, trampling, dispersal, and rooting behavior. Objective: To evaluate the impact of peccaries (Dycotiles tajacu) on the understory vegetation of the tropical rainforest in the Nogal-La Selva Local Biological Corridor, Costa Rica, comparing a site with the absence of peccaries to another with the presence of these animals. Methodology: From June to November 2021, 20 experimental exclusions and 20 free access plots, each measuring 2 m2 were used to quantify herbivory, the number of leaf blades, damaged leaves, healthy leaves, sapling height, and fallen biomass at both sites. Results: A higher sapling density was found in the Nogal Reserve, but a lower sapling diversity, while in La Selva there was a higher sapling diversity, but a lower density of seedlings. Herbivory and sapling height in La Selva exceeded those in Nogal. The exclusion of peccaries reduced seedling damage but did not affect the dynamics of fallen biomass. Conclusion: For the design, implementation, and evaluation of the effectiveness of biological corridors, it is crucial to consider plant-animal interactions to enhance the flow of ecological processes through functional and structural connectivity, analyzed from interactions such as those presented in this paper.


Resumen Introducción: Existe evidencia que herbívoros, como los saínos, dan forma a la estructura y diversidad de la vegetación a través del comportamiento de depredación, pisoteo, dispersión y enraizamiento. Objetivo: Evaluar el impacto de los saínos (Dycotiles tajacu) en la vegetación del sotobosque del bosque tropical húmedo en el Corredor Biológico Local Nogal-La Selva, Costa Rica, en un sitio con ausencia y en otro con presencia de saínos. Métodos: De junio a noviembre de 2021 se utilizaron 20 exclusiones experimentales y 20 parcelas de acceso libre de 2 m2, se cuantifico la herbivoría, número de láminas foliares, hojas dañadas, hojas sanas, altura de brinzales y biomasa caída en ambos sitios. Resultados: Se encontró una mayor densidad de brinzales en Reserva Nogal pero una menor diversidad, contrario en La Selva donde se encontró una mayor diversidad de brinzales, pero una menor densidad de plántulas. La herbivoría y la altura de brinzales en La Selva fue mayor que en Nogal. La exclusión de los saínos disminuyó el daño a las plántulas, pero no afectó la dinámica de la biomasa caída. Conclusión: Es necesario contemplar para el diseño, implementación y evaluación de la efectividad de corredores biológicos, las interacciones planta-animal, para potencializar el flujo de procesos ecológicos mediante la conectividad funcional y estructural, analizada a partir de interacciones como las presentadas en este trabajo.

BACKGROUND: PD-L1 tumor proportion score (TPS) and tumor mutational burden (TMB) are key predictive biomarkers for immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) efficacy in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Data on their variation across multiple samples are limited. METHODS: Patients with NSCLC and multiple PD-L1 TPS and/or TMB assessments were included. Clinicopathologic and genomic data were analyzed according to PD-L1 and TMB variation. RESULTS: In total, 402 PD-L1 sample pairs and 413 TMB sample pairs were included. Concordance between pairs was moderate for PD-L1 (ρ=0.53, P<0.0001) and high for TMB (ρ=0.80, P<0.0001). Shorter time between biopsies correlated with higher concordance in PD-L1, but not in TMB. Major increases (ΔTPS≥+50%) and decreases (ΔTPS≤-50%) in PD-L1 were observed in 9.7% and 8.0% of cases, respectively. PD-L1, but not TMB, decreased with intervening ICI (P=0.02). Acquired copy number loss of CD274, PDCD1LG2, and JAK2 were associated with major decrease in PD-L1 (q<0.05). Among patients with multiple PD-L1 assessments before ICI, cases where all samples had a PD-L1 ≥1%, compared to cases with at least one sample with PD-L1 <1% and another with PD-L1 ≥1%, achieved improved objective response rate and progression-free survival (PFS). Among patients with at least one PD-L1 <1% and one ≥1% before ICI, cases where the most proximal sample was PD-L1 ≥1% had longer median PFS compared to cases where the most proximal PD-L1 was <1%. Among patients with multiple TMB assessments before ICI, patients with a TMB ≥10 mut/Mb based on the most recent assessment, as compared to those with a TMB <10 mut/Mb, achieved improved PFS and OS to ICI; instead, no differences were observed when patients were categorized using the oldest TMB assessment. CONCLUSION: Despite intrapatient concordance in PD-L1 and TMB, variation in these biomarkers can influence ICI outcomes, warranting consideration for reassessment prior to ICI initiation when feasible.

Influenza A Virus in swine (IAV-S) is a zoonotic pathogen that is nearly ubiquitous in commercial swine in the USA. Swine possess sialic acid receptors that allow co-infection of human and avian viruses with the potential of pandemic reassortment. We aimed to develop a fast and robust testing method for IAV-S detection on swine farms. Two primers of the RT-LAMP assay were labeled for use in a lateral flow readout. A commercially available lateral flow kit was used to read the amplicon product. With a runtime of ∼ 45 minutes, the limit of detection for the assay is comparable with an RT-qPCR Cq less than 35, with a sensitivity of 83.5 % and a specificity of 89.6 %. This assay allows veterinarians and producers with limited access to diagnostic services to perform and detect Matrix gene amplification on-site with low equipment costs. The time from sample collection to detection is less than one hour, making this method an accessible, convenient, and affordable tool to prevent the spread of zoonotic disease.

Histidine kinases (HKs) are a central part of bacterial environmental-sensing two-component systems. They provide their hosts with the ability to respond to a wide range of physical and chemical signals. HKs are multidomain proteins consisting of at least a sensor domain, dimerization and phosphorylation domain (DHp), and a catalytic domain. They work as homodimers and the existence of two different autophosphorylation mechanisms (cis and trans) has been proposed as relevant for pathway specificity. Although several HKs have been intensively studied, a precise sequence-to-structure explanation of why and how either cis or trans phosphorylation occurs is still unavailable nor is there any evolutionary analysis on the subject. In this work, we show that AlphaFold can accurately determine whether an HK dimerizes in a cis or trans structure. By modeling multiple HKs we show that both cis- and trans-acting HKs are common in nature and the switch between mechanisms has happened multiple times in the evolutionary history of the family. We then use AlphaFold modeling to explore the molecular determinants of the phosphorylation mechanism. We conclude that it is the difference in lengths of the helices surrounding the DHp loop that determines the mechanism. We also show that very small changes in these helices can cause a mechanism switch. Despite this, previous evidence shows that for a particular HK the phosphorylation mechanism is conserved. This suggests that the phosphorylation mechanism participates in system specificity and mechanism switching provides these systems with a way to diverge.

BACKGROUND: Until 2005, when a single dose of vaccine was implemented in one-year-old children, the Hepatitis A virus (HAV) was responsible for approximately 90% of acute hepatitis cases in the paediatric population in Argentina. However, despite vaccination success, sporadic outbreaks of HAV still occur among adults. This study aimed to assess the seroepidemiology of HAV in Argentina, analysing IgG and IgM antibodies against HAV in a large population, both vaccinated and unvaccinated. METHODS: The study included 16,982 patients attending a hospital from 2001 to 2023. The cohort was divided into two groups: 16,638 individuals who were not reached by the vaccination program implemented in 2005 and 344 children who were covered by the universal vaccination. RESULTS: Anti-HAV IgG was detected in 56.7% of cases. The rate was significantly higher in individuals born after 2005 (77.7%) compared to those born before (56.3%), p < 0.001. The age groups 19-40 and 41-60 years showed the anti-HAV IgG lowest rates. On the other hand, 100/3956 cases (2.5%) with suspected acute hepatitis were positive for Anti-HAVIgM. Notably, none of these were born after the mandatory vaccine rollout. CONCLUSIONS: The study of this large cohort contributes to the understanding of the seroepidemiology of HAV. Although the implementation of the vaccine achieved its main goal, the age segment between 19 and 60 years does not reach the estimated threshold to achieve herd immunity. These findings reveal the importance of targeting vaccination campaigns, provide essential insights for public health planning, and guide future immunisation strategies against HAV in Argentina.

BACKGROUND: Unenlagiine paravians are among the most relevant Gondwanan theropod dinosaur clades for understanding the origin of birds, yet their fossil record remains incomplete, with most taxa being represented by fragmentary material and/or separated by lengthy temporal gaps, frustrating attempts to characterize unenlagiine evolution. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Here we describe Diuqin lechiguanae gen. et sp. nov., a new unenlagiine taxon from the Upper Cretaceous (Santonian) Bajo de la Carpa Formation of the Neuquén Basin of Neuquén Province in northern Patagonia, Argentina that fills a substantial stratigraphic gap in the fossil record of these theropods. Although known only from a very incomplete postcranial skeleton, the preserved bones of Diuqin differ from corresponding elements in other unenlagiines, justifying the erection of the new taxon. Moreover, in several morphological aspects, the humerus of Diuqin appears intermediate between those of geologically older unenlagiines from the Neuquén Basin (e.g., Unenlagia spp. from the Turonian-Coniacian Portezuelo Formation) and that of the stratigraphically younger, larger-bodied Austroraptor cabazai from the Campanian-Maastrichtian Allen Formation. Consequently, the morphology of the new taxon appears to indicate a transitional stage in unenlagiine evolution. Phylogenetic analysis recovers Diuqin as a paravian with multiple plausible systematic positions, but the strongest affinity is with Unenlagiinae. The humerus of the new form exhibits subcircular punctures near its distal end that are interpreted as feeding traces most likely left by a conical-toothed crocodyliform, mammal, or theropod, the latter potentially corresponding to a megaraptorid or another unenlagiine individual. Thus, in addition to filling important morphological and temporal gaps in unenlagiine evolutionary history, the new taxon also offers information relating to the paleoecology of these theropods.

Motivated by the lack of facile routes to alkali-niobium(V) oxyfluorides KNb2O5F and CsNb2O5F, we investigated the reactivity of alkali trifluoroacetates KH(tfa)2 and CsH(tfa)2 (tfa = CF3COO-) toward Nb2O5 in the solid state. Tetragonal tungsten bronze KNb2O5F and pyrochlore CsNb2O5F were obtained by simply reacting the corresponding trifluoroacetate with Nb2O5 at 600 °C under air, without the need for specialized containers or a controlled atmosphere. Thermolysis of KH(tfa)2 in the presence of Nb2O5 yielded single-phase polycrystalline KNb2O5F. By contrast, the reaction between CsH(tfa)2 and Nb2O5 produced a mixture of CsNb2O5F and a new oxyfluoride of formula CsNb3O7F2, whose crystal structure was solved using powder X-ray and electron diffraction. CsNb3O7F2 (space group P6/mmm) belongs to the family of hexagonal tungsten bronzes and features an open-framework structure consisting of corner-sharing Nb(O,F)6 octahedra with hexagonal channels occupied by Cs+ ions. Isomorphous RbNb3O7F2 was obtained upon reacting RbH(tfa)2 with Nb2O5. Synthetic optimization enabled the preparation of RbNb3O7F2 and CsNb3O7F2 as single-phase polycrystalline solids at 500 °C under flowing synthetic air. Both oxyfluorides were found to be semiconductors with a band gap of ≈3.5 eV. The discovery of these two oxyfluorides highlights the importance of probing the reactivity of solids whose full potential as fluorinated precursors is yet to be realized.

According to textbooks, no physical observable can be discerned allowing to distinguish a liquid from a gas beyond the critical point. Yet, several proposals have been put forward challenging this view and various transition boundaries between a gas-like and a liquid-like behaviour, including the so-called Widom and Frenkel lines, and percolation line, have been suggested to delineate the supercritical state space. Here we report observation of a crossover from gas-like (Gaussian) to liquid-like (Lorentzian) self-dynamic structure factor by incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering measurements on supercritical fluid methane as a function of pressure, along the 200 K isotherm. The molecular self-diffusion coefficient was derived from the best Gaussian (at low pressures) or Lorentzian (at high pressures) fits to the neutron spectra. The Gaussian-to-Lorentzian crossover is progressive and takes place at about the Widom line intercept (59 bar). At considerably higher pressures, a liquid-like jump diffusion mechanism properly describes the supercritical fluid on both sides of the Frenkel line. The present observation of a gas-like to liquid-like crossover in the self dynamics of a simple supercritical fluid confirms emerging views on the unexpectedly complex physics of the supercritical state, and could have planet-wide implications and possible industrial applications in green chemistry.

In this review we focused on the putative therapeutic effect of Hericium erinaceus extract in the treatment of pathologic conditions of the lower urinary tract in which intestinal inflammation may play a role. To this aim we reviewed the available evidence on pelvic cross-organ sensitization as a possible mechanism through which intestinal inflammation and dysbiosis may affect the lower urinary tract. Also, we reviewed the clinical and experimental evidence supporting the role of Hericium erinaceus extract as an anti-inflammatory agent highlighting the role of a number of putative mediators and mechanisms which might make this nutraceutical suitable for the management of 'difficult to treat' lower urinary tract disorders.

Introduction: The incidence of squamous carcinoma of the oropharynx (OPSCC) has presented an increase worldwide, a fact that occurs along with a phenomenon of epidemiological transition, whose pathogenesis is linked to human papilloma virus (HPV) in a significant part of the cases. Published evidence at the Latin American level is scarce. The present study aims to evaluate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with oropharyngeal cancer treated in a public oncology reference centre in Chile. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out. Patients with histological confirmation of OPSCC aged 18 years or older, referred to the National Cancer Institute of Chile between 2012 and 2023 were included. The association with HPV was determined by immunohistochemistry for p16. Results: 178 patients were analysed, most of them in locoregionally advanced stages involving the palatine tonsil. Seventy-seven percent were male, with a median age of 60 years. Sixty-seven percent of patients were positive for p16, with a progressive increase to 85% in the last 2 years of the study. The p16(+) patients were younger and had fewer classical risk factors. Primary treatment was radiotherapy in 94% of patients. Conclusion: The epidemiological profile of patients with OPSCC treated in a Chilean public oncology referral centre reflects the epidemiological transition observed in developed countries. This change justifies the need to adapt health policies and conduct research that considers the characteristics of this new epidemiological profile.

RESUMO

Tumor mutational burden (TMB) is a biomarker that measures the number of somatic mutations in a tumor's genome. TMB has emerged as a predictor of response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in various cancer types, and several studies have shown that patients with high TMB have better outcomes when treated with programmed death-ligand 1-based therapies. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration has approved TMB as a companion diagnostic for the use of pembrolizumab in solid tumors. However, despite its potential, the use of TMB as a biomarker for immunotherapy efficacy is limited by several factors. Here we review the limitations of TMB in predicting immunotherapy outcomes in patients with cancer and discuss potential strategies to optimize its use in the clinic.

Modular hip implants allow intra-operative adjustments for patient-specific customization and targeted replacement of damaged elements without full implant extraction. However, challenges arise from relative micromotions between components, potentially leading to implant failure due to cytotoxic metal debris. In this study magnitude and directions of micromotions at the taper junction were estimated, aiming to understand the effect of variations in head size and neck length. Starting from a reference configuration adhering to the 12/14 taper standard, six additional implant configurations were generated by varying the head size and/or neck length. A musculoskeletal multibody model of a prothesized lower limb was developed to estimate hip contact force and location during a normal walking task. Following the implant assembly, the multibody-derived loads were imposed as boundary conditions in a finite element analysis to compute the taper junction micromotions as the relative slip between the contacting surfaces. Results highlighted the L-size head as the most critical configuration, indicating a 2.81 µm relative slip at the mid-stance phase. The proposed approach enables the investigation of geometric variations in implants under accurate load conditions, providing valuable insights for designing less risky prostheses and informing clinical decision-making processes.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is known to suppress the type I interferon (IFNs-α/ß) response during infection. PRRSV also activates the NF-κB signaling pathway, leading to the production of proinflammatory cytokines during infection. In swine farms, co-infections of PRRSV and other secondary bacterial pathogens are common and exacerbate the production of proinflammatory cytokines, contributing to the porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC) which is clinically a severe disease. Previous studies identified the non-structural protein 1ß (nsp1ß) of PRRSV-2 as an IFN antagonist and the nucleocapsid (N) protein as the NF-κB activator. Further studies showed the leucine at position 126 (L126) of nsp1ß as the essential residue for IFN suppression and the region spanning the nuclear localization signal (NLS) of N as the NF-κB activation domain. In the present study, we generated a double-mutant PRRSV-2 that contained the L126A mutation in the nsp1ß gene and the NLS mutation (ΔNLS) in the N gene using reverse genetics. The immunological phenotype of this mutant PRRSV-2 was examined in porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs) in vitro and in young pigs in vivo. In PAMs, the double-mutant virus did not suppress IFN-ß expression but decreased the NF-κB-dependent inflammatory cytokine productions compared to those for wild-type PRRSV-2. Co-infection of PAMs with the mutant PRRSV-2 and Streptococcus suis (S. suis) also reduced the production of NF-κB-directed inflammatory cytokines. To further examine the cytokine profiles and the disease severity by the mutant virus in natural host animals, 6 groups of pigs, 7 animals per group, were used for co-infection with the mutant PRRSV-2 and S. suis. The double-mutant PRRSV-2 was clinically attenuated, and the expressions of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines were significantly reduced in pigs after bacterial co-infection. Compared to the wild-type PRRSV-2 and S. suis co-infection control, pigs coinfected with the double-mutant PRRSV-2 exhibited milder clinical signs, lower titers and shorter duration of viremia, and lower expression of proinflammatory cytokines. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that genetic modification of the type I IFN suppression and NF-κB activation functions of PRRSV-2 may allow us to design a novel vaccine candidate to alleviate the clinical severity of PRRS-2 and PRDC during bacterial co-infection.

Flowering time and plant height are two critical determinants of yield potential in barley (Hordeum vulgare). Despite their role in plant physiological regulation, a complete overview of the genetic complexity of flowering time and plant height regulation in barley is still lacking. Using a double round-robin population originated from the crossings of 23 diverse parental inbred lines, we aimed to determine the variance components in the regulation of flowering time and plant height in barley as well as to identify new genetic variants by single and multi-population QTL analyses and allele mining. Despite similar genotypic variance, we observed higher environmental variance components for plant height than flowering time. Furthermore, we detected new QTLs for flowering time and plant height. Finally, we identified a new functional allelic variant of the main regulatory gene Ppd-H1. Our results show that the genetic architecture of flowering time and plant height might be more complex than reported earlier and that a number of undetected, small effect, or low-frequency genetic variants underlie the control of these two traits.

Objective.To study the secondary neutrons generated by primary oxygen beams for cancer treatment and compare the results to those from primary protons, helium, and carbon ions. This information can provide useful insight into the positioning of neutron detectors in phantom for future experimental dose assessments.Approach.Mono-energetic oxygen beams and spread-out Bragg peaks were simulated using the Monte Carlo particle transport codesFLUktuierende KAskade, tool for particle simulation, and Monte Carlo N-Particle, with energies within the therapeutic range. The energy and angular distribution of the secondary neutrons were quantified.Main results.The secondary neutron spectra generated by primary oxygen beams present the same qualitative trend as for other primary ions. The energy distributions resemble continuous spectra with one peak in the thermal/epithermal region, and one other peak in the fast/relativistic region, with the most probable energy ranging from 94 up to 277 MeV and maximum energies exceeding 500 MeV. The angular distribution of the secondary neutrons is mainly downstream-directed for the fast/relativistic energies, whereas the thermal/epithermal neutrons present a more isotropic propagation. When comparing the four different primary ions, there is a significant increase in the most probable energy as well as the number of secondary neutrons per primary particle when increasing the mass of the primaries.Significance.Most previous studies have only presented results of secondary neutrons generated by primary proton beams. In this work, secondary neutrons generated by primary oxygen beams are presented, and the obtained energy and angular spectra are added as supplementary material. Furthermore, a comparison of the secondary neutron generation by the different primary ions is given, which can be used as the starting point for future studies on treatment plan comparison and secondary neutron dose optimisation. Super-elastic bone staples have emerged as a safe and effective alternative for internal fixation. Nevertheless, several biomechanical aspects of super-elastic staples are still unclear and require further exploration. Within this context, this study presents a combined experimental and computational approach to investigate the mechanical characteristics of super-elastic staples. Two commercially available staples with distinct geometry, characterized by two and four legs, respectively, were examined. Experimental four-point bending tests were conducted to evaluate staple performance in terms of generated forces. Subsequently, a finite element-based calibration procedure was developed to capture the unique super-elastic behavior of the staple materials. Finally, a virtual bench testing framework was implemented to separate the effect of geometry from that of the material characteristics on the mechanical properties of the devices, including generated force, strain distribution, and fatigue behavior. The experimental tests indicated differences in the force vs. displacement curves between staples. The material calibration procedure revealed marked differences in the super-elastic properties of the materials employed in staple 1 and staple 2. The results obtained from the virtual bench testing framework have showed that both geometric features and material characteristics had a substantial impact on the mechanical properties of the device, especially on the generated force, whereas their effect on strain distribution and fatigue behavior was comparatively less pronounced. To conclude, this study advances the biomechanical understanding of Nitinol super-elastic staples by separately investigating the impact of geometry and material characteristics on the mechanical properties of two commercially available devices.

Clathrate hydrideFm3-m-LaH10has been proven as the most extraordinary superconductor with the critical temperatureTcabove 250 K upon compression of hundreds of GPa in recent years. A general hope is to reduce the stabilization pressure and maintain the highTcvalue of the specific phase in LaH10. However, strong structural instability distortsFm3-mstructure and leads to a rapid decrease ofTcat low pressures. Here, we investigate the phase stability and superconducting behaviors ofFm3-m-LaH10with enhanced chemical pre-compression through partly replacing La by Ce atoms from both experiments and calculations. For explicitly characterizing the synthesized hydride, we choose lanthanum-cerium alloy with stoichiometry composition of 1:1. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements reveal the stabilization ofFm3-m-La0.5Ce0.5H10in the pressure range of 140-160 GPa. Superconductivity withTcof 175 ± 2 K at 155 GPa is confirmed with the observation of the zero-resistivity state and supported by the theoretical calculations. These findings provide applicability in the future explorations for a large variety of hydrogen-rich hydrides.

The Calibration Laboratory of the Paul Scherrer Institute is responsible for the calibration and verification of radiation protection instruments and dosemeters for internal as well as external customers, such as nuclear power plants and hospitals. The Laboratory is authorised by the Federal Institute of Metrology METAS to perform legal verifications and is accredited as an inspection body, according to ISO 17020, and as a calibration laboratory, according to ISO 17025 by the Swiss Accreditation Service. In addition to routine activities (e.g. calibration of dosemeters, irradiation of passive and active dosemeters on phantoms), the Laboratory is involved in various research and development projects with the goal of supporting the increasingly complex calibration needs and to comply with new regulations, particularly those related to clearance limits in free release measurements. Here we present an overview of the currently on-going projects, which include the investigation of Monte Carlo methods for the calibration of clearance monitors and the development of new calibration procedures for wipe test counters. We also discuss the challenges encountered in these projects, since different stakeholders, ranging from legal authorities to equipment manufacturers and users, are involved in the calibration process.

BACKGROUND: JC polyomavirus (JCV) has an ethno-geographical distribution across human populations. OBJECTIVE: Study the origins of the population of Misiones (Argentina) by using JCV as genetic marker. METHODS: Viral detection and characterization was conducted by PCR amplification and evolutionary analysis of the intergenic region sequences. RESULTS: 22 out of 121 samples were positive for JCV, including 5 viral lineages: MY (n = 8), Eu-a (n = 7), B1-c (n = 4), B1-b (n = 2) and Af2 (n = 1). MY sequences clustered within a branch of Native American origin that diverged from its Asian counterpart about 21,914 years ago (HPD 95% interval 15,383-30,177), followed by a sustained demographic expansion around 5000 years ago. CONCLUSIONS: JCV in Misiones reflects the multiethnic origin of the current population, with an important Amerindian contribution. Analysis of the MY viral lineage shows a pattern consistent with the arrival of early human migrations to the Americas and a population expansion by the pre-Columbian native societies.

The varied transcriptomic response to nanoparticles has hampered the understanding of the mechanism of action. Here, by performing a meta-analysis of a large collection of transcriptomics data from various engineered nanoparticle exposure studies, we identify common patterns of gene regulation that impact the transcriptomic response. Analysis identifies deregulation of immune functions as a prominent response across different exposure studies. Looking at the promoter regions of these genes, a set of binding sites for zinc finger transcription factors C2H2, involved in cell stress responses, protein misfolding and chromatin remodelling and immunomodulation, is identified. The model can be used to explain the outcomes of mechanism of action and is observed across a range of species indicating this is a conserved part of the innate immune system.
