RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Liver transplantation from living liver donation (LLD) has become an important source of liver grafts. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We studied the 2011-2012 academic year attitude of nursing students from a university in Poland. The sampling points were compulsory attendance in the 5 nursing courses. The validated questionnaire was Project Collaborative International Donor-Living Liver Donation Rios. The questionnaire was completed anonymously and was self-administered. RESULTS: The completion rate was 89% (440 of 495); 91% (n = 398) were in favor of the related LLD, 8% (n = 37) were undecided, and 1% (n = 5) were against. When the attitude toward LLD is not related, 40% (n = 177) of respondents were in favor. The favorable attitude was associated with the following: consideration of the needs of organs for transplantations are covered (P ≤ .001); attitude in favor toward organ donation and transplantation (ODT) (P = .001); attitude in favor toward LLD (P = .007); attitude in favor of the acceptance of a LLD by a family member (P = .001); discussion of ODT with the family (P ≤ .001); being in favor of donating organs of a relative (P ≤ .001); and being Catholic (P = .003). After multivariate analysis, we observed the following significant correlations: the thought that the needs of transplantation organs are covered (odds ratio [OR] = 4.608; P = .020); being ready to accept a liver from a LLD (OR = 3.125; P = .038); discussion with the family about the subject of donation and transplantation (OR = 3.215; P = .003); and not belonging to any doctrine or religious belief (OR = 11.363; P = .039). CONCLUSIONS: In this study 91% of nursing students were in favor of living organ donation.

RESUMO

This paper presents the main trends in the activity of European veterinary pathologists in the context of their oral presentations (plenary lectures and short presentations) and posters provided during annual meetings of the European Society of Veterinary Pathology (ESVP), in the decade 1997-2006. It was found that the issue that was most often brought up in the meetings was organ pathology (566 presentations). Infectious and parasitical diseases were only slightly less frequent (548 presentations). Oncology was another common issue (404 presentations). During this decade, 52 plenary lectures were presented, 765 oral presentations and 1 072 posters. Altogether, 1 889 presentations were made, which is between 127 and 238 per year. Research by Polish scientists accounted for 3.16% of all presentations. Additionally, the subject matter discussed at the annual meetings is analysed, and the trends in the development of veterinary diagnostic pathology and broad pathology education are indicated. It is shown that veterinary pathology enhances knowledge in the field of veterinary medicine by fulfilling a cognitive and diagnostic role.

RESUMO

A new mobile device for the evaluation of the sleep-apnoea-syndrome in outpatients prior to conventional polysomnography, processes and stores the oronasal airflow detected by a thermistor, and the heart rate and oxygen saturation in a microprocessor unit. The major problem in on-line data processing of these variables is the interpretation of the thermistor signal for correct apnoea detection. This preliminary study investigates the reliability of the computer algorithm by control of the automatic airflow assessment. With a sensitivity of 97.3% the algorithm proved to be extreme reliable. Combined with the detection of heart rate and oxygen saturation it provides the capacity for comprehensive analysis of cardiorespiratory events and appears to be suitable for application in an outpatient setting.

RESUMO

A comprehensive diagnostic work-up of patients with a suspected sleep apnea syndrome must include conventional polysomnographic monitoring during the night. On account of the considerable staff and technical requirement, however, this definitive diagnostic measure is not suitable for use as a screening programme. For this reason we undertook to develop a device for the computer-aided recording of sleep apnea. The heart of the unit is a 65816 microprocessor with an address capacity of 16 Mbytes. The oro-nasal airflow is recorded with the aid of thermistors, and, after digital filtering, the respiratory rate is continuously recorded on the basis of this signal. Continuous recording of the heart rate and oxygen saturation, is also effected, the recorded data being stored in the microprocessor. On conclusion of the data acquisition phase, evaluation and a compressed display is shown on any conventional personal computer. Our preliminary experience reveals that the algorithm employed is extremely reliable for the detection of respiration rate and apnea, even in the presence of unfavourable signal forms. Clinically relevant deviations from manual evaluation do not occur. As was to be expected, processing of the signals for heart rate and oxygen saturation presented no problems.

RESUMO

At the mineralization front of the epiphyseal growth plate large quantities of calcium (Ca) are necessary to form the mineral (a Ca-phosphate). It is an unsolved problem, whether Ca is transported through the cells of the growth plate cartilage or extracellularly. Electronprobe microanalysis (EPMA) allows the quantitative, morphologically correlated analysis of elements. EPMA can discriminate only different elements. To investigate the transport of Ca, Strontium (Sr) is a very good tracer, as it resembles Ca in many biological reactions. Our results demonstrate that the transport of Sr from the blood into the growth plate and through the growth plate needs only one or a few minutes. The measured intracellular Sr and Ca concentrations are much lower than the extracellular ones, while the intracellular Sr/Ca ratio is not or only a little bit lower than the extracellular one. It must be concluded, that significant amounts of Ca are neither transported through nor accumulated in the cells of the growth plate cartilage. The main transport is an extracellular diffusion. Using Sr as a tracer for Ca new results on the behaviour of Ca could be received.
