RESUMO

Curcumae Longae Rhizoma (turmeric), Curcumae Radix and Curcumae Rhizoma are derived from the Curcuma species, and have gradually become three of the most commonly used medicinal herbs in China due to their different origins, processing methods and medicinal part. These three herbs have certain similarities in morphology, chemical composition, and pharmacological effects. All three of these herbs contain curcuminoids and volatile oil compounds, which exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties, although modern clinical applications have their own requirements. At present, there is no systematic guidelines for the clinical application of these three of Curcuma species; consequently, there is a high risk of unwanted phenomena associated with the mixing and indiscriminate use of these herbs. In this review, we focus predominantly on morphology, chemical composition, and the pharmacological activity of these three Curcuma herbs and summarize the current status of research in this field. Our goal is to provide a better understanding of clinical value of these Curcuma species so that we can provide reference guidelines for their further development, utilization and rational clinical application.

RESUMO

Computational hyperspectral cameras with broadband encoded filter arrays enable high precision spectrum reconstruction with only a few filters. However, these types of hyperspectral cameras have limited application, because it is difficult for conventional encoded filter arrays to balance among the spectrum regulation capacity, angle insensitivity, and processibility. This Letter presents a new, to the best of our knowledge, encoded filter composed of superposition Fabry-Perot resonance cavity (SFP) that can simultaneously take all three aspects into consideration. By learning the parameters of an SFP encoder and a neural network decoder in an end-to-end manner, a computational hyperspectral camera based on an SFP filter array presents up to 2.24 times higher spectral reconstruction accuracy, 10 times wider working angle, and can be produced with a low-cost manufacturing process.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hastatoside is an iridoid glycoside extracted from the herb, Verbena officinalis, that exerts various pharmacological effects, including anti-inflammatory, sleep-promoting, and analgesic effects. However, only a few studies have reported the efficacy of hastatoside in liver fibrosis. Liver fibrosis is a pathophysiological process, and its persistence can seriously affect the quality of life and well-being of the patients. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the role of hastatoside on liver fibrosis and its possible underlying mechanisms. METHODS: C57BL/6 J mice with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatic fibrosis were used as the in vivo models. Histological features of the liver were observed using Masson's trichrome and hematoxylin-eosin staining. Alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels and the hepatic fibrosis indices (type 3 procollagen, laminin, and hyaluronic acid) were measured using corresponding assay kits. LX-2 human hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) stimulated with the transforming growth factor ß1 were used as the vitro models. Transfection of the glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3ß small interfering RNA (siRNA) and ß-catenin plasmids was also performed in vitro. Protein levels of GSK-3ß, phospho-GSK-3ß (Ser 9), α-smooth muscle actin, collagen type I alpha 1, c-Myc, cyclin D1, and ß-catenin were determined via western blotting. Moreover, the p-GSK-3ß:GSK-3ß ratio was calculated to determine the GSK-3ß activity. RESULTS: Hastatoside prevented CCl4-induced liver injury and histological damage. It inhibited the upregulation of α-SMA and Col1α1 levels in a CCl4-induced mouse hepatic fibrosis model. In vitro, hastatoside inhibited the proliferation and activation of HSCs by decreasing the expression levels of cyclin D1 and c-Myc and the proportion of LX-2 cells activated in the G0/G1 phase. Molecular docking results showed that hastatoside bound to GSK-3ß. Hastatoside significantly increased the GSK-3ß activity and inhibited the downstream effector expression of ß-catenin. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that hastatoside can bind to GSK-3ß and promote its activity, while inhibiting the GSK-3ß downstream effector expression of ß-catenin, thereby inhibiting the activation and proliferation of HSCs, which further prevents the development of liver fibrosis. These results provide innovative insights into the underlying liver fibrosis. Moreover, hastatoside is a potential anti-fibrosis monomer that can potentially be used for the treatment of liver fibrosis.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Hypericum japonicum Thunb. ex Murray (Hypericaceae), named 'Tianjihuang' is a traditional Chinese medicine with hepatoprotective, antibacterial, and antitumour effects. Betulinic acid (BA) is its active constituent and has been found to have a number of biological effects, including antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-malarial therapeutic properties. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and acute alcoholic liver injury have both been proven to benefit from BA. BA's effects and mechanism on liver fibrosis are still unknown. AIM OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of BA on lymphocyte-specific protein tyrosine kinase (Lck), a non-receptor Src family kinase, that reduces liver fibrosis by inhibiting the phosphorylation of the Janus kinase (JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathways through the interaction of Lck and SOCS1. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A liver fibrosis model was established in vivo with CCl4 using haematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, Masson staining, immunohistochemical staining, and immunofluorescence staining. Hepatic stellate cells were induced with transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß1 in vitro, using Western blotting, immunofluorescence staining, and a cell scratch assay. RESULTS: In a CCl4-induced mouse hepatic fibrosis model and in TGF-ß1-activated HSC-T6 cells, BA markedly reduced fibrosis, as demonstrated by the dramatic downregulation of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and type I collagen alpha-1 (Col1α1) protein levels in vivo and in vitro. BA significantly suppressed the activity and expression of Lck in vitro. Overexpression of Lck may diminish the effect of BA on liver fibrosis. In vitro, BA also greatly increased the expression of suppressor of cytokine signalling 1 (SOCS1) while it considerably inhibited the expression of p-JAK and p-STAT1. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that BA promotes the expression of SOCS1 by the inhibiting the interaction between Lck and SOCS1, followed by the inhibition of JAK/STAT phosphorylation to prevent the progression of liver fibrosis. Therefore, BA could be used as a promising natural supplement for the treatment of liver fibrosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chloroplast and endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-localized fatty acid (FA) transporters have been reported to play important roles in oil (mainly triacylglycerols, TAG) biosynthesis. However, whether these FA transporters synergistically contribute to lipid accumulation, and their effect on lipid metabolism in microalgae are unknown. RESULTS: Here, we co-overexpressed two chloroplast-localized FA exporters (FAX1 and FAX2) and one ER-localized FA transporter (ABCA2) in Chlamydomonas. Under standard growth conditions, FAX1/FAX2/ABCA2 over-expression lines (OE) accumulated up to twofold more TAG than the parental strain UVM4, and the total amounts of major polyunsaturated FAs (PUFA) in TAG increased by 4.7-fold. In parallel, the total FA contents and major membrane lipids in FAX1/FAX2/ABCA2-OE also significantly increased compared with those in the control lines. Additionally, the total accumulation contribution ratio of PUFA, to total FA and TAG synthesis in FAX1/FAX2/ABCA2-OE, was 54% and 40% higher than that in UVM4, respectively. Consistently, the expression levels of genes directly involved in TAG synthesis, such as type-II diacylglycerol acyltransferases (DGTT1, DGTT3 and DGTT5), and phospholipid:diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 (PDAT1), significantly increased, and the expression of PGD1 (MGDG-specific lipase) was upregulated in FAX1/FAX2/ABCA2-OE compared to UVM4. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that the increased expression of FAX1/FAX2/ABCA2 has an additive effect on enhancing TAG, total FA and membrane lipid accumulation and accelerates the PUFA remobilization from membrane lipids to TAG by fine-tuning the key genes involved in lipid metabolism under standard growth conditions. Overall, FAX1/FAX2/ABCA2-OE shows better traits for lipid accumulation than the parental line and previously reported individual FA transporter-OE. Our study provides a potential useful strategy to increase the production of FA-derived energy-rich and value-added compounds in microalgae.

RESUMO

Hong Kong's wet markets play a crucial role in the country's supply of safe, fresh meat to satisfy the dietary needs of its population. Whilst food safety regulations have been introduced over the past few years to maintain the microbial safety of foods sold from these wet markets, it remains unclear whether the hygiene maintenance that is performed on the wooden cutting boards used for meat-processing is effective. In fact, hygiene maintenance may often be overlooked, and hygiene standards may be insufficient. If so, this may lead to the spread of harmful pathogens through cross-contamination, thereby causing severe risks to public health. The aim of this study was to determine the level of microbial transfer between wooden cutting boards and swine meat of various qualities, using 16S metagenomic sequencing, strain identification and biofilm screening of isolated strains. The results established that: (a) the traditional hygiene practices used for cleaning wooden cutting boards in Hong Kong's wet markets expose the surfaces to potentially harmful microorganisms; (b) the processing of microbially contaminated meat on cutting boards cleaned using traditional practices leads to cross-contamination; and (c) several potentially pathogenic microorganisms found on the cutting boards have good biofilm-forming abilities. These results reinforce the need to review the traditional methods used to clean wooden cutting boards after the processing of raw meat in Hong Kong' wet markets so as to prevent cross-contamination events. The establishment of proper hygiene protocols may reduce the spread of disease-causing microorganisms (including antibiotic-resistant microorganisms) in food-processing environments.

RESUMO

The high precision scattering spectrum of spatial fragment with the minimum brightness of 4.2 and the resolution of 0.5 nm has been observed using spectrum detection technology on the ground. The obvious differences for different types of objects are obtained by the normalizing and discrete rate analysis of the spectral data. Each of normalized multi-frame scattering spectral line shape for rocket debris is identical. However, that is different for lapsed satellites. The discrete rate of the single frame spectrum of normalized space debris for rocket debris ranges from 0.978% to 3.067%, and the difference of oscillation and average value is small. The discrete rate for lapsed satellites ranges from 3.118 4% to 19.472 7%, and the difference of oscillation and average value relatively large. The reason is that the composition of rocket debris is single, while that of the lapsed satellites is complex. Therefore, the spectrum detection technology on the ground can be used to the classification of the spatial fragment.

RESUMO

In recent years, with frequent domestic food safety incidents related to the plasticizing agent, the detection of plasticizers in food research becomes increasingly urgent. DEHP is one of the plasticizer. In the present paper, theoretical Raman spectrum and experimental Raman spectrum of DEHP were given. DEHP molecular structure was optimized by DFT(B3LYP) method. DEHP molecular Raman spectra and infrared spectra were calculated with. HF theory and DFT theory based on 3-2G level. The analytical reagent level DEHP Raman spectra was measured, and was compared with theoretical spectra, and good agreements were obtained between the theoretical and experimental results. Because of different calculation methods, we can see that both the wave number and relative intensity of peaks have small differences. DEHP structure parameters were also given in the paper including bond lengths and bond angles etc. Vibrational modes were assigned to all bands between 400 and 3 500 cm-1. Raman spectroscopy study of the commonly used plasticizer dioctyl phthalate was reported in this paper for the first time. This effort will contribute to the research and application of Raman spectroscopy in the field of food testing.

RESUMO

The authors have investigated the optical properties of core-shell structure of mist wrapped dust particles based on the method of discrete dipole approximation (DDA). The influence on the thickness of the elliptical core-shell structure were calculated which the ratio of long axis and short axis is 2:1, and the change of scattering angle for scattering characteristics. The results shows that the thickness of outer layer increase from 1.2 to 4.8 µm with the scattering and extinction coefficient of double core-shell layers particles decrease from 3.4 and 3.43 to 2.543 and 2.545, when the size of inner core isn't change. And scattering relative strength also increased obviously. The thickness of inner core increase from 0.6 to 2.4 µm with the of scattering and extinction coefficient change from 2.59 and 2.88 to 2.6 and 2.76 when thickness of outer remain constant. Effect of the thickness of visible outer layer on the scattering characteristics of double core-shell layers particles is greater, because of the interaction between scattering light and outer materials. The scattering relative intensity decrease with wavelength increased, while increased with the scale of core-shell structure increase. The results make a promotion on the study of the transportation characteristics of laser and scattering characteristics when the atmospheric aerosol and water mist interact together.
