RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Glycerophospholipids (GPLs) are essential for cell membrane structure and function. Sphingomyelin and its metabolites regulate cell growth, apoptosis, and stress responses. This study aimed to investigate lipid metabolism in patients experiencing sudden sensorineural hearing loss across all frequencies (AF-SSNHL). METHODS: The study included 60 patients diagnosed with unilateral AF-SSNHL, among whom 30 patients had a level of hearing improvement ≥ 15 dB after 6 months of follow-up. A propensity score-matched (2:1) control group was used. Liquid chromatography‒mass spectrometry based untargeted lipidomics analysis combined with multivariate statistics was performed to investigate the lipids change. The "lipidome" R package and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) were utilised to assess the lipids' structural features and the association between lipids and hearing. RESULTS: Lipidomics successfully differentiated the AF-SSNHL group from the control group, identifying 17 risk factors, mainly including phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), and related metabolites. The ratios of lysophosphatidylcholine/PC, lysophosphatidylethanolamine/PE, and lysodimethylphosphatidylethanolamine/PE were upregulated, while some glycerophospholipid (GPL)-plasmalogens were downregulated in the AF-SSNHL group, indicating abnormal metabolism of GPLs. Trihexosylceramide (d34:1), PE (18:1e_22:5), and sphingomyelin (d40:3) were significantly different between responders and nonresponders, and positively correlated with hearing improvement. Additionally, the results of the WGCNA also suggested that partial GPL-plasmalogens were positively associated with hearing improvement. CONCLUSION: AF-SSNHL patients exhibited abnormally high blood lipids and pronounced GPLs metabolic abnormalities. Sphingolipids and GPL-plasmalogens had an association with the level of hearing improvement. By understanding the lipid changes, clinicians may be able to predict the prognosis of hearing recovery and personalize treatment approaches.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The current understandings of the relationship between air pollution (AP), greenspace exposure and Parkinson's Disease (PD) remain inconclusive. METHODS: We engaged 441,462 participants from the UK Biobank who were not diagnosed with PD. Utilizing Cox proportional hazard regression model, relationships between AP [nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and nitrogen oxides (NOX), particulate matter < 2.5 µm in aerodynamic diameter(PM2.5), coarse particulate matter between 2.5 µm and 10 µm in aerodynamic diameter(PM2.5-10), particulate matter < 10 µm in aerodynamic diameter(PM10)], greenspace exposure, and PD risk were determined independently. Our analyses comprised three models, adjusted for covariates, and affirmed through six sensitivity analyses to bolster the robustness of our findings. Moreover, mediation analysis was deployed to discern the mediating effect of AP between greenspaces and PD. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 12.23 years (5,574,293 person-years), there were 3,293 PD events. Each interquartile (IQR) increment in NO2 and PM10 concentrations were associated with 10% and 8% increase in PD onset risk, while the increases in NOX, PM2.5 and PM2.5-10 were not associated with PD risk. Additionally, greenspace may safeguard by reducing NO2 and PM10 levels, with the effect mediated by NO2 and PM10 in greenspace-PD relationship. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that an IQR increase in ambient NO2 and PM10 concentrations was associated with risk of PD development, while other pollutants (NOX, PM2.5 and PM2.5-10) were not associated with PD risk. Firstly, we find that augmented exposure to greenspace was associated with the lower PD risk by reducing NO2 and PM10 levels.

RESUMO

Objectives: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a complex disease associated with the interaction of multiple factors. Furthermore, indicators of liver function represent the body's metabolic, immune, and repair abilities. This study investigated correlations between liver function and ARHL. Methods: A total of 107 patients with ARHL and 107 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers were included. Linear correlations, logistic regression, and receiving operator characteristic curves were used to assess the associations between liver function and ARHL. Results: Serum prealbumin (PAB) levels were significantly lower in the ARHL group compared to the control group. Logistic regression analysis indicated that low PAB levels may be an independent risk factor for ARHL. The ARHL was divided into 2 groups according to the degree of hearing loss (moderately severe-to-profound and mild-to-moderate); the median ages in the 2 groups were 70.48 and 66.85 years, respectively, with the difference being significant. Age was an independent risk factor for moderately severe-to-profound ARHL, as shown by the logistic regression analysis. Conclusions: Lower PAB levels in patients with ARHL suggested that PAB may be a risk factor for ARHL. Furthermore, higher age in patients with ARHL was associated with a greater degree of hearing loss.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to explore the effects of traditional and non-traditional lipid parameters on Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL). METHODS: The study included 452 patients diagnosed with SSNHL, among whom 206 patients had a level of hearing improvement ≥10 dB after one month of follow-up. A propensity score-matched (2:1) control group was used. Conditional and unconditional logistic regression were used to analyze the risk factors for SSNHL. RESULTS: Patients with SSNHL had a higher risk of concomitant hypertension and elevated atherosclerogenic lipid levels, with apolipoprotein B and apolipoprotein E identified as independent risk factors for the onset of SSNHL. Additionally, the Lipid Comprehensive Index (LCI) was an independent risk factor for the degree of hearing loss. A positive linear correlation was revealed between triglyceride, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, atherogenic index, Castelli risk index, atherogenic index of plasma, LCI and hearing loss. However, no linear relationship was observed between hearing gain and any lipid parameters. When Total Cholesterol (TC) was in the range of borderline high, the treatment effect was the best. However, the statistical significance disappeared upon adjusting for confounding factors. CONCLUSION: Patients with SSNHL exhibited markedly dysregulated lipid metabolism. Elevated serum lipid levels may be a causative factor in auditory impairment and can influence the extent of hearing loss. Promptly improving cochlear microcirculation may benefit patients with borderline elevated TC.

RESUMO

Sustainable and rapid production of high-valent cobalt-oxo (Co(IV)=O) species for efficiently removing organic pollutants is challenging in permoxymonosulfate (PMS) based advanced-oxidation-processes (AOPs) due to the limitation of the high 3d-orbital electronic occupancy of Co and slow conversion from Co(III) to Co(II). Herein, S-scheme BiOCl-OV/CoAl-LDH heterojunction were constructed by ultrathin BiOCl with the oxygen-vacancy (OV) self-assembled with ultrathin CoAl-LDH. OV promoted the formation of charge transfer channel (Bi-O-Co bonds) at the interface of the heterojunction and reduced electron occupation of the Co 3d-orbital to facilitate the generation of Co(IV)=O in the BiOCl-OV/CoAl-LDH/PMS/Visible-light system. S-scheme heterojunction accelerated the photogenerated electrons to allow rapid conversion of Co(III) to Co(II), promoting the fast two-electron transfer from Co(II) to Co(IV)=O. Consequently, the developed BiOCl-OV/CoAl-LDH/PMS/Visible-light system showed excellent degradation efficiency for most of organic pollutions, and exhibited very high removal capability for the actual industrial wastewater. This study provides a new insight into the evolution of Co(IV)=O and the coordinative mechanism for photocatalysis and PMS activation.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the association between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and Parkinson's disease (PD) utilizing prospective cohort study and Mendelian randomization. The dataset contained a substantial cohort of 426,911 participants from the UK Biobank, discussing the association between IBS and PD with Cox proportional hazards models and case-control analysis while adjusting for covariates such as age, gender, ethnicity and education level. In univariate Cox regression model, the risk of PD was reduced in IBS patients (HR: 0.774, 95%CI: 0.625-0.956, P = 0.017), but the statistical significance diminished in the three models after adjusting for other variables. In a few subgroup analyses, IBS patients are less likely to develop into PD, and patients diagnosed with IBS after 2000 also had a lower risk (HR: 0.633, 95%CI: 0.403-0.994, P = 0.047) of subsequently developing PD. In addition, we matched five healthy control participants based on gender and age at the end of the study for each IBS patient diagnosed during the follow-up period, and logistic regression results (OR:1.239, 95%CI: 0.896-1.680, P = 0.181) showed that IBS was not associated with the risk of PD. Mendelian randomization did not find significant evidence of the causal relationship between IBS and Parkinson's disease (OR: 0.801, 95%CI: 0.570-1.278, P = 0.204). Overall, we suggest that IBS status is not associated with the risk of developing PD, and that these findings provide valuable insights into the clinical management and resource allocation of patients with IBS.

RESUMO

Background: Tuberculosis (TB), a multisystemic disease with protean presentation, remains a major global health problem. Although concurrent pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) cases are commonly observed clinically, knowledge regarding concurrent PTB-EPTB is limited. Here, a large-scale multicenter observational study conducted in China aimed to study the epidemiology of concurrent PTB-EPTB cases by diagnostically defining TB types and then implementing association rules analysis. Methods: The retrospective study was conducted at 21 hospitals in 15 provinces in China and included all inpatients with confirmed TB diagnoses admitted from Jan 2011 to Dec 2017. Association rules analysis was conducted for cases with concurrent PTB and various types of EPTB using the Apriori algorithm. Results: Evaluation of 438,979TB inpatients indicated PTB was the most commonly diagnosed (82.05%) followed by tuberculous pleurisy (23.62%). Concurrent PTB-EPTB was found in 129,422 cases (29.48%) of which tuberculous pleurisy was the most common concurrent EPTB type observed. The multivariable logistic regression models demonstrated that odds ratios of concurrent PTB-EPTB cases varied by gender and age group. For PTB cases with concurrent EPTB, the strongest association was found between PTB and concurrent bronchial tuberculosis (lift = 1.09). For EPTB cases with concurrent PTB, the strongest association was found between pharyngeal/laryngeal tuberculosis and concurrent PTB (lift = 1.11). Confidence and lift values of concurrent PTB-EPTB cases varied with gender and age. Conclusions: Numerous concurrent PTB-EPTB case types were observed, with confidence and lift values varying with gender and age. Clinicians should screen for concurrent PTB-EPTB in order to improve treatment outcomes.

RESUMO

Photocatalytic degradation is an environmentally friendly way to eliminate environmental pollution. Exploring a photocatalyst with high efficiency is essential. In the present study, we fabricated a Bi2MoO6/Bi2SiO5 heterojunction (BMOS) with intimate interfaces via a facile in situ synthesis method. The BMOS had much better photocatalytic performance than pure Bi2MoO6 and Bi2SiO5. The sample of BMOS-3 (3:1 molar ratio of Mo:Si) had the highest removal efficiency by the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) up to 75% and tetracycline (TC) up to 62% within 180 min. The increase in photocatalytic activity can be attributed to constructing high-energy electron orbitals in Bi2MoO6 to form a type II heterojunction, which increases the separation efficiencies of photogenerated carriers and transfer between the interface of Bi2MoO6 and Bi2SiO5. Moreover, electron spin resonance analysis and trapping experiments showed that the main active species were h+ and •O2- during photodegradation. BMOS-3 maintained a stable degradation capacity of 65% (RhB) and 49% (TC) after three stability experiments. This work offers a rational strategy to build Bi-based type II heterojunctions for the efficient photodegradation of persistent pollutants.

RESUMO

Acrylamide (AA) and heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs), as classic hazards produced during food thermal processing, have been widely concerned, but because of their polarity difference, it is very difficult to detect these contaminants simultaneously. Herein, novel cysteine (Cys)-functionalized magnetic covalent organic frameworks (Fe3O4@COF@Cys) were synthesized via a thiol-ene click strategy and then used as adsorbents for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). Benefiting from the hydrophobic properties of COFs and the modification of hydrophilic Cys, AA and HAAs could be enriched simultaneously. Then, a rapid and reliable method based on MSPE coupled with HPLC-MS/MS was developed for the simultaneous detection of AA and 5 HAAs in thermally processed foods. The proposed method showed good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9987) with satisfactory limits of detection (0.012-0.210 µg kg-1) and recoveries (90.4-102.8%). Actual sample analysis showed that the levels of AA and HAAs in French fries were affected by frying time and temperature, water activity of samples, content and type of reaction precursors, and reuse of oils.

RESUMO

Introduction: There is a high incidence of both smoking and tuberculosis (TB) in China. This study examined the risk factors for severe pulmonary TB (PTB) and positive tubercle bacilli in sputum. Methods: We conducted a retrospective case-control study in a tertiary hospital from January 2017 to December 2018 (n = 917). The clinical and biological characteristics of patients were collected, and univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the factors associated with smoking in terms of the severity and transmission of PTB. Results: Positive tubercle bacilli in sputum and severe PTB were much higher in smoking patients. Together with nutrition status, heavy smoking exhibited a 284% greater risk in severe PTB. Positive tubercle bacilli in sputum was significantly associated with hypoproteinemia and smoking regardless of the status, duration, and degree. Conclusion: Because cigarette smoking was strongly and inversely associated with hypoproteinemia, we conclude that smoking plays a critical role in the severity and transmission of PTB. Smoking cessation interventions should be employed to prevent severe PTB and decrease the transmission of PTB.

RESUMO

Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into valuable hydrocarbon fuels is one of the green ways to solve the energy problem and achieve carbon neutrality. Exploring photocatalyst with low toxicity and high-efficiency is the key to realize it. Here we report a lead-free halide perovskite-based 0D/2D Cs3Bi2Br9/Bi2WO6 (CBB/BWO) S-scheme heterojunction for CO2 photoreduction, prepared by a facile electrostatic self-assembly approach. The CBB/BWO shows superior photoreduction of CO2 under visible light with CO generation rate of 220.1 µmol·g-1·h-1, which is ∼115.8 and ∼18.5 times higher than that of Cs3Bi2Br9 perovskite quantum dots (CBB PQDS) and Bi2WO6 nanosheets (BWO NS), respectively. The improved photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the tight 0D/2D structure and S-scheme charge transfer pathway between the Cs3Bi2Br9 PQDS and atomic layers of the Bi2WO6 NS, which shortens transmission distance of photogenerated carriers and boosts efficient separation and transfer of the carriers. This work provides insight in manufacturing potential lead-free perovskite-based photocatalysts for achieving carbon neutrality.

RESUMO

Damage-associated molecular pattern molecules (DAMPs) play a critical role in mediating cochlear cell death, which leads to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), a prototypical DAMP released from cells, has been extensively studied in the context of various diseases. However, whether extracellular HMGB1 contributes to cochlear pathogenesis in NIHL and the potential signals initiating HMGB1 release from cochlear cells are not well understood. Here, through the transfection of the adeno-associated virus with HMGB1-HA-tag, we first investigated early cytoplasmic accumulation of HMGB1 in cochlear hair cells after noise exposure. We found that the cochlear administration of HMGB1-neutralizing antibody immediately after noise exposure significantly alleviated hearing loss and outer hair cells (OHCs) death induced by noise exposure. In addition, activation of signal transducer and activators of transcription 1 (STAT1) and cellular hyperacetylation were verified as potential canonical initiators of HMGB1 cytoplasmic accumulation. These findings reveal the adverse effects of extracellular HMGB1 on the cochlea and the potential signaling events mediating HMGB1 release in hair cells, indicating multiple potential pharmacotherapeutic targets for NIHL.

RESUMO

Parvimonas micra is an anaerobic Gram-positive coccus frequently found in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract, but rarely in the lung. Therefore, pneumonia caused by P. micra is also rare. Although there are some reports of P. micra related pneumonia due to aspiration or blood-borne infection with definite remote infection source, there are no reported cases of hematogenous P. micra pneumonia in healthy adults lacking a remote source of infection. Herein, we described the intact disease of P. micra-related pneumonia mimicking hematogenous Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia in terms of chest imagery and diagnosed via metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS). Interestingly, there was no clear remote pathogenic source identified in the patient. Microbiome analysis revealed dysbiosis of the oral flora possibly related to poor oral hygiene and a long history of smoking. The patient was treated with moxifloxacin for 3 months. Ultimately, computed tomography (CT) of the chest showed total resolution of the lung lesion. Clinicians need to update the etiology of community-acquired pneumonia. When antibiotic therapy is not effective, pathogen examination becomes very important. New methods of pathogen detection such as mNGS should be employed to this end. For the treatment of P. micra pneumonia, no standardized course of treatment was reported. Imaging absorption of lung infections may provide a more objective guidance for the duration of antibiotics in P. micra pneumonia.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the effect of sound therapy combined with drug therapy (SDT) on gap detection threshold and speech recognition scores in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). METHODS: Patients with SSNHL were grouped randomly into SDT and drug therapy (DT) groups. All patients received standard drug treatment and patients in the SDT group additionally received sound stimulation for the affected ears for 6 days. Pure tone audiogram, speech recognition scores at normal and time-compressed rates under quiet and noisy conditions, and the gap detection threshold of the SDT and DT groups before treatment and on day 6 and 30 after treatment were compared. RESULTS: There were 20 patients in the SDT group and 24 in the DT group. The pure tone thresholds of affected ears were significantly lower in the SDT group on day 6 after treatment than those in the DT group at 125 and 250 Hz. Significantly lower gap detection thresholds and higher speech recognition scores under noisy conditions were observed at the normal and time-compressed rates in the SDT group than those in the DT group on day 6 and 30 after treatment. Significant correlations were observed between the gap thresholds and speech recognition scores in a noisy environment at normal and time-compressed rates on day 6 and 30. CONCLUSIONS: SDT may improve the recovery of hearing abilities, such as the gap in noise thresholds and speech recognition in noise, in the case of SSNHL. RESUMO

Objectives: This study aims to explore the relationship between bone-turnover biomarkers and the recovery of SSNHL to provide clues for further improvements in etiological research and predictors. Methods: The medical history, hearing thresholds, biomarkers of bone-turnover, and related hormones of 117 SSNHL patients were collected prospectively between August 2018 and December 2021. Linear correlation and logistic regression models were applied to examine the association between bone-turnover biomarkers and the prognosis of SSNHL. Results: Age, the incidence of vertigo, pure tone average of the impaired frequencies (PTAimpairedfre), and the levels of bone turnover [including alkaline phosphatase (ALP), ß-carboxy terminal crosslinked telopeptide of type 1 collagen (ß-CTX), and N-terminal-midfragment of osteocalcin (N-MID)] were higher in the nonresponders than responders (P < 0.05). Logistic regression showed that the age (OR = 1.035, P = 0.027), time to treatment (OR = 1.157, P = 0.038), PTAimpairedfre (OR = 1.031, P = 0.008), and ß-CTX (OR = 1.004, P = 0.001) were independent risk factors for the prognosis of SSNHL. In the women SSNHL subgroup, age, postmenopause percentage, PTAimpairedfre, the activity of ALP, levels of ß-CTX, and N-MID were significantly higher in the nonresponders than the responders (P < 0.05). Compared to the men SSNHL subgroup, ß-CTX has a higher correlation coefficient and predictive efficiency in the women SSNHL subgroup, and logistic regression showed that ß-CTX (OR = 1.004, P = 0.004) was an independent risk factor for the women SSNHL. Conclusions: Bone-turnover biomarkers are risk factors for poor prognosis in SSNHL, especially ß-CTX. The differences were significant in women SSNHL, which may be related to the rapid regression of estrogen after menopause that leads to the occurrence of osteoporosis with a high conversion rate.

RESUMO

Heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) are a class of hazardous compounds produced in food thermal processing. These compounds raise concerns because they have mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. However, the neurotoxicity of these compounds has received limited attention. Here, the toxic effects of three HAAs, i.e. 9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole (Norharman), 1-methyl-9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole (Harman), and 2-amino-3-methylimidazole[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ) were investigated in Neuro-2a cells model. The results showed that the survival rate of cells decreased in a dose-dependent manner and apoptosis occurred after exposure to the three HAAs for 24 h and 48 h. Their neurotoxicity was ranked as Harman > Norharman > IQ. Further, treatment of Harman, Norharman, or IQ at 50 and 100 µM for 48 h led to intracellular REDOX imbalance, which was manifested as increased ROS and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, decreased GSH/GSSG ratio, and reduced SOD and CAT activities. Moreover, Norharman and Harman up-regulated the expression level of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), as well as the mRNA levels of Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and NAD(P)H quinone oxidoredutase1 (NQO1), while IQ had no significant effect on the levels of Nrf2, HO-1, and NQO1. Additionally, Harman, Norharman, or IQ exposure significantly reduced mitochondrial membrane potential and intracellular ATP levels and up-regulated the levels of apoptosis-related genes and proteins. Collectively, our finding suggested that HAAs were neurotoxic, with mechanisms related to induction of oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Temporal envelope cues are conveyed by cochlear implants (CIs) to hearing loss patients to restore hearing. Although CIs could enable users to communicate in clear listening environments, noisy environments still pose a problem. To improve speech-processing strategies used in Chinese CIs, we explored the relative contributions made by the temporal envelope in various frequency regions, as relevant to Mandarin sentence recognition in noise. METHODS: Original speech material from the Mandarin version of the Hearing in Noise Test (MHINT) was mixed with speech-shaped noise (SSN), sinusoidally amplitude-modulated speech-shaped noise (SAM SSN), and sinusoidally amplitude-modulated (SAM) white noise (4 Hz) at a + 5 dB signal-to-noise ratio, respectively. Envelope information of the noise-corrupted speech material was extracted from 30 contiguous bands that were allocated to five frequency regions. The intelligibility of the noise-corrupted speech material (temporal cues from one or two regions were removed) was measured to estimate the relative weights of temporal envelope cues from the five frequency regions. RESULTS: In SSN, the mean weights of Regions 1-5 were 0.34, 0.19, 0.20, 0.16, and 0.11, respectively; in SAM SSN, the mean weights of Regions 1-5 were 0.34, 0.17, 0.24, 0.14, and 0.11, respectively; and in SAM white noise, the mean weights of Regions 1-5 were 0.46, 0.24, 0.22, 0.06, and 0.02, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that the temporal envelope in the low-frequency region transmits the greatest amount of information in terms of Mandarin sentence recognition for three types of noise, which differed from the perception strategy employed in clear listening environments.

RESUMO

Symptoms of vertigo are frequently reported and are usually accompanied by eye-movements called nystagmus. In this article, we designed a three-dimensional nystagmus recognition model and a benign paroxysmal positional vertigo automatic diagnosis system based on deep neural network architectures (Chinese Clinical Trials Registry ChiCTR-IOR-17010506). An object detection model was constructed to track the movement of the pupil centre. Convolutional neural network-based models were trained to detect nystagmus patterns in three dimensions. Our nystagmus detection models obtained high areas under the curve; 0.982 in horizontal tests, 0.893 in vertical tests, and 0.957 in torsional tests. Moreover, our automatic benign paroxysmal positional vertigo diagnosis system achieved a sensitivity of 0.8848, specificity of 0.8841, accuracy of 0.8845, and an F1 score of 0.8914. Compared with previous studies, our system provides a clinical reference, facilitates nystagmus detection and diagnosis, and it can be applied in real-world medical practices.

RESUMO

Objective: We aimed to assess the effect of noise exposure on bottom-up and top-down attention functions in industrial workers based on behavioral and brain responses recorded by the multichannel electroencephalogram (EEG). Method: In this cross-sectional study, 563 shipyard noise-exposed workers with clinical normal hearing were recruited for cognitive testing. Personal cumulative noise exposure (CNE) was calculated with the long-term equivalent noise level and employment duration. The performance of cognitive tests was compared between the high CNE group (H-CNE, >92.2) and the low CNE group; additionally, brain responses were recorded with a 256-channel EEG from a subgroup of 20 noise-exposed (NG) workers, who were selected from the cohort with a pure tone threshold <25 dB HL from 0.25 to 16 kHz and 20 healthy controls matched for age, sex, and education. P300 and mismatch negativity (MMN) evoked by auditory stimuli were obtained to evaluate the top-down and bottom-up attention functions. The sources of P300 and MMN were investigated using GeoSource. Results: The total score of the cognitive test (24.55 ± 3.71 vs. 25.32 ± 2.62, p < 0.01) and the subscale of attention score (5.43 ± 1.02 vs. 5.62 ± 0.67, p < 0.001) were significantly lower in the H-CNE group than in the L-CNE group. The attention score has the fastest decline of all the cognitive domain dimensions (slope = -0.03 in individuals under 40 years old, p < 0.001; slope = -0.06 in individuals older than 40 years old, p < 0.001). When NG was compared with controls, the P300 amplitude was significantly decreased in NG at Cz (3.9 ± 2.1 vs. 6.7 ± 2.3 µV, p < 0.001). In addition, the latency of P300 (390.7 ± 12.1 vs. 369.4 ± 7.5 ms, p < 0.001) and MMN (172.8 ± 15.5 vs. 157.8 ± 10.5 ms, p < 0.01) was significantly prolonged in NG compared with controls. The source for MMN for controls was in the left BA11, whereas the noise exposure group's source was lateralized to the BA20. Conclusion: Long-term exposure to noise deteriorated the bottom-up and top-down attention functions even in the absence of threshold shifts, as evidenced by behavioral and brain responses.
