Acinetobacter sp isolates deserve special attention once they have emerged globally in healthcare institutions because they display numerous intrinsic and acquired drug-resistance mechanisms. This study assessed the antibiotic susceptibility profile, the presence of the genetic marker blaOXA-23, and the clonal relationship among 34 nosocomial isolates of Acinetobacter spp obtained at a hospital in southeastern Brazil. Antibiotic sensitivity analysis was performed by the standard disc-diffusion method. All isolates were found to be extensively resistant to several drugs, but sensitive to polymyxin B. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was used to detect the blaOXA-23 gene, which is associated with carbapenem resistance. The genetic profile and the clonal relationship among isolates were analyzed via enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC)-PCR. The Acinetobacter spp were divided into four groups with 22 distinct genetic subgroups. ERIC-PCR analysis revealed the genetic diversity among isolates, which, despite having a heterogeneous profile, displayed 100% clonality among 56% (19/34) of them.

RESUMO

In the Uberaba River basin (state of Minas Gerais, Brazil), pastures for livestock production have invaded areas of native vegetation (Cerrado biome), while already existing pastures were invaded by crop agriculture, with an expansion of sugar cane plantations in the most recent years. In some areas of the basin, these land use changes were classified as environmental land use conflicts because the new uses were not conforming to land capability, i.e. the soil's natural use. Where the areas in conflict became dense, some soil properties have changed significantly, namely the organic matter content and the exchangeable potassium concentration, which have decreased drastically (5kg/m(3) per 10% increase in the conflict area) threatening the fertility of soil. Besides, these changes may have triggered a cascade of other environmental damages, specifically the increase of soil erosion and the degradation of water quality with negative impacts on aquatic biodiversity, related to a disruption of soil organic matter structural functions. Because half the Uberaba catchment has been considered is a state of accentuated environmental degradation, not only caused by environmental land use conflicts, conservation measures have been proposed and requested for immediate implementation across the watershed.

RESUMO

The genus Fallacia Stickle & Mann includes naviculoid birraphid diatoms with H-like plastids, valves with uniseriate striae and covered by porous conopea, rounded areolae occluded by hymens, and depressed hyaline lyriform area characterizing the valvar surface. The species Fallacia marnieri was found in samples collected in King George Island, Antarctic Peninsula, on which an electron microscopy study and literature revision were carried out. From this investigation, we found that since Fallacia marnieri has the diagnostic structures of the genus, its recent inclusion in Fallacia is justified. The species was found on rocks of an intertidal region, and seems to be endemic in cold regions, as indicated in the literature.

RESUMO

A study of the diatoms Eupodiscus radiatus Bailey and Fryxelliella floridana Prasad, mainly focussing on the mantle and cingulum, provided new morphological information. In E. radiatus dendritic structures and two types of a palisade-like structure fixed to silica rings were found on the lower valve mantle. Cingulum presented 1-3 bands with areolae arranged in decussate rows. Furthermore, the pars interior of the valvocopula is fimbriate; and the external openings of the rimoportulae are located along the rim of the scalloped extension. The valvocopula of F. floridana is open and its copula is ligulate. Both bands possess poroid areolae similar in size to the cribral pores on the valve face. The genus Eupodiscus is compared to Fryxelliella, based on material sampled in estuaries of Southern Brazil.

A new species of Triceratiaceae is described for estuarine environments of Southern Brazil. The valve of Triceratium moreirae sp. nov. is triangular with elevations bearing ocellus and a rimoportula in their basis. The valvar surface has robust pseudoloculi, circular to polygonal, each one confining a group of areolae arranged in a typical pattern. A central larger areola is surrounded by 5-8 smaller areolae, and they are poroidal with domed cribra. A septum emerges from the valvocopula, having the base reinforced by ribs and the margins folded to the innerside of the valve. The new species is compared to the closely related diatom Triceratium dubium, which has the same pattern of areolar disposition, formation of septum and pseudoloculi. The main differences in relation to T. moreirae are: rimoportulae intercalated to ocelli and with a characteristic morphology (spinules on the edge of the external aperture), and more elongated elevations with a constriction. Some criteria used for the classification of categories into the Triceratiaceae are also discussed, and we propose that the type of areola (poroidal with cribra) be included in the circumscription of Triceratium.
