BACKGROUND/AIM: Undernutrition is a serious health problem prevalent in poor countries, affecting millions of people worldwide, especially young children, pregnant women, and sick elderly individuals. This condition increases vulnerability to infections, leading to widespread use of antibiotic treatments in undernourished populations. The objective of the present study was to determine the in vivo genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) treatment according to nutritional conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The effects of TMP-SMX treatment were measured by analyzing the kinetics of micronucleated reticulocytes (MN-RET) induced in the peripheral blood of young, well-nourished (WN) and undernourished (UN) rats. RESULTS: In the WN group, two distinct peaks of MN-RET were observed, while the UN group had a significantly higher basal frequency of MN-RET compared to the WN group and only a later peak. Reticulocyte (RET) frequency slightly decreased in WN, indicating a poor cytotoxic effect. In contrast, in the UN, the treatment caused a significant increase in RET frequency. The results indicate that SMX's aromaticity index decreases when formed with TMP, suggesting potentially fewer toxic effects. CONCLUSION: In vivo TMP-SMX produces two MN-RET induction peaks in WN animals, indicating two DNA damage induction mechanisms and consequent micronucleus production. The UN rats did not display the two peaks, indicating that the first MN induction mechanism did not occur in UN, possibly due to pharmacokinetic effects, decreased metabolism or effects on cell proliferation. TMP-SMX has a slight cytotoxic effect on WN. In contrast, in the UN, the antibiotic treatment seems to favor early erythropoiesis.

Chagas disease is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. Benznidazole and nifurtimox are drugs used for its therapy; nevertheless, they have collateral effects. NADH-fumarate (FUM) reductase is a potential pharmacological target since it is essential for survival of parasite and is not found in humans. The objectives are to design and characterize the electronic structure of imidazole and nitroimidazole derivatives at DFT-M06-2X level in aqueous solution; also, to model the NADH-FUM reductase and analyze its intermolecular interactions by molecular docking. Quantum-chemical descriptors allowed to select the molecules with the best physicochemical properties and lowest toxicity. A high-quality three-dimensional structure of NADH-FUM reductase was obtained by homology modeling. Water molecules do not have influence in the interaction between FUM and NADH-FUM reductase. The main hydrogen-binding interactions for FUM were identified in NADH, Lys172, and Arg89; while hydrophobic interactions in Phe479, Thr174, Met63. The molecules S3-8, S2-8, and S1-8 could be inhibitors of NADH-FUM reductase.

Bothrops asper, a highly venomous pit viper distributed from Colombia and northwestern Peru in South America to southern Mexico, is responsible for most snake bites in Central America, affecting especially young agricultural workers. A 17-year-old male from a rural area in northern Honduras was admitted at San Francisco Hospital after a B. asper bite that had occurred 3 days earlier. The puncture wounds were located on the first toe of the right foot. On the second day of admission, the patient developed dyspnea. A physical examination revealed hypoventilation of the left lung with dullness on 75% of the left lung. Left pleural effusion, approximately 90%, was observed on the chest X-ray. The patient was diagnosed with hemothorax, and a thoracostomy drained 1,350 mL of serosanguineous fluid, followed by the installation of a wet suction control system (Pleur-evac®). After 10 days, the patient was discharged. This case illustrates the diversity of hemorrhagic manifestations in envenomations by B. asper.

Closing of the marine commons increases economic returns and slows depletion of valuable ocean resources. Rights-based management is widely used for fisheries rationalization. Regulators with sound biological and economic information can in theory set overall harvest control rules that protect the fish stocks, and manage for external costs and benefits from harvest. These may include ecosystem damages, overcapitalization in the fishery, and/or equity concerns. Regulatory efforts and related rights-based management instruments may increase the returns to fishery stakeholders but miss important challenges that are increasing under climate change. These include transboundary resource management and tradeoffs between local economic returns and Total Economic Value. The case of the valuable, yet invasive, crab species, Chionoecetes Opilio (Snow Crab) in the Barents Sea illustrates the concerns. The spread of the crab has known and unknown ecosystem and commercial fishery risks, particularly to uncertain ecosystem values. We show how the progression of the biological invasion interacts with human strategic behavior to identify limitations of management options. Open access harvesting of the species in international waters has generated a positive spillover effect by slowing the westward spread of the species to sensitive benthic ecosystems. This benefit is threatened by reclassification of the crab as a "sedentary species" (one which is not capable of leaving the seabed when harvestable (UNCLOS, 1982, article 77, part VI)). This shifts the regulatory environment for the crab in ways that exacerbate the invasion in exchange for protection of local gains. Such problems will increase in magnitude and impact as climate changes increasingly affect species' ranges. Optimal decision-making regarding profitable species in new ecosystems must incorporate how strategic institutional shifts occurring in response to the economic incentives asymmetrically affect local and global stakeholders in addition to standard concerns over ecological and economic damages.

Integrated solutions are needed for sustainable management of risks posed by recreational boats to coastal water quality and ecosystems. Fouling organisms roughen vessel hull surfaces, creating friction that slows sailboats and increases fuel consumption by powerboats. Hull fouling control strategies for recreational boats that are stored in the water may include antifouling hull paints, newer alternative hull coatings, periodic in-water hull cleaning, and excluding propagules by surrounding the boat with a slip liner or raising it above water on a lift. Copper discharged to harbor waters from antifouling paints via passive leaching and in-water hull cleaning may elevate dissolved copper levels above government standards. Invasive species carried among boat-hull fouling organisms may be introduced as boats move among coastal areas. Some of these species tolerate copper in antifouling paints and copper-polluted harbor waters. Policy development must consider supply-side capacity, as well as economic and environmental sustainability, in managing these issues. This paper presents a supply-side evaluation useful in developing policies to co-manage water quality and invasive species risks for recreational boats navigating along the coasts of California, the Baja California peninsula and California's Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Supply-side perspectives on services, materials, costs, and boat owner behaviors, such as residence and travel patterns, awareness of hull-coating choices and selection of hull coatings, are determined. Analyses include evaluation of risks, risk management capacity and costs, and role of education in risk management. The issues raised are broadly applicable, as they are appearing on research and policy agendas in diverse coastal areas.

We apply a fixed-effects model to examine the impact of trade and environmental policies on air quality at ports along the U.S.-Mexico border. We control for other factors influencing air quality, such as air quality of cities near the border, volume of traffic flows and congestion. Results show the air quality improved after 2004, when the diesel engine policy was applied. We see mixed results for the trade policy, whose implementation time varies across ports along the international border. Controlling for air quality in cities near the border is essential for assessing the policy contributions to air quality.

Maritime shipping has two vectors of spreading marine invasive species: ballast water inside the ship and biofouling on the hulls outside the ship. While some attention has focused on ballast water, virtually none is focused on biofouling. This paper offers a quantitative analysis of economic incentives for shippers and regulating ports to address both pollution vectors. The strategies to address the vectors are induced by incentive mechanisms involving liability, subsidies and taxes. Results show these offer ample incentives in order to truly foster abatement of both vectors. Data from North America's Pacific coast is included in the analysis.

A cost-of-illness framework was applied to health and income data to quantify the health burden from illnesses associated with exposure to polluted recreational marine waters. Using data on illness severity due to exposure to polluted coastal water and estimates of mean annual salaries and medical costs (adjusted to 2001 values) for residents of Orange County, California, we estimated that the economic burden per gastrointestinal illness (GI) amounts to 36.58 dollars, the burden per acute respiratory disease is 76.76 dollars, the burden per ear ailment is 37.86 dollars, and the burden per eye ailment is 27.31 dollars. These costs can become a substantial public health burden when millions of exposures per year to polluted coastal waters result in hundreds of thousands of illnesses. For example, exposures to polluted waters at Orange County's Newport and Huntington Beaches were estimated to generate an average of 36,778 GI episodes per year. At this GI illness rate, one can also expect that approximately 38,000 more illness episodes occurred per year of other types, including respiratory, eye, and ear infections. The combination of excess illnesses associated with coastal water pollution resulted in a cumulative public health burden of 3.3 million dollars per year for these two beaches. This paper introduces a public health cost variable that can be applied in cost-benefit analyses when evaluating pollution abatement strategies.
