RESUMO

Quantum wells formed by layers of HgTe between Hg[Formula: see text]Cd[Formula: see text]Te barriers lead to two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators, as predicted by the BHZ model. Here, we theoretically and experimentally investigate the characteristics of triple HgTe quantum wells. We describe such heterostructure with a three dimensional [Formula: see text] Kane model, and use its eigenstates to derive an effective 2D Hamiltonian for the system. From these we obtain a phase diagram as a function of the well and barrier widths and we identify the different topological phases composed by zero, one, two, and three sets of edge states hybridized along the quantum wells. The phase transitions are characterized by a change of the spin Chern numbers and their corresponding band inversions. Complementary, transport measurements are experimentally investigated on a sample close to the transition line between the phases with one and two sets of edges states. Accordingly, for this sample we predict a gapless spectrum with low energy bulk conduction subbands given by one parabolic and one Dirac subband, and with edge states immersed in the bulk valence subbands. Consequently, we show that under these conditions, local and non-local transport measurements are inconclusive to characterize a sole edge state conductivity due to bulk conductivity. On the other hand, Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations show an excellent agreement with our theory. Particularly, we show that the measured SdH oscillation frequencies agrees with our model and show clear signatures of the coexistence of a parabolic and Dirac subbands.

RESUMO

Recently, orbital-textures have been found in Rashba and topological insulator (TI) surface states as a result of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we predict a px/py orbital texture, in linear dispersive Dirac bands, arising at the K/K' points of χ-h0 borophene chiral monolayer. Combining "first-principles" calculations with effective Hamiltonians, we show that the orbital pseudospin has its direction locked with the momentum in a similar way as TIs' spin-textures. Additionally, considering a layer pseudospin degree of freedom, this lattice allows stackings of layers with equivalent or opposite chiralities. In turn, we show a control of the orbital textures and layer localization through the designed stacking and external electric field. For instance, for the opposite chirality stacking, the electric field allows for an on/off switch of the orbital-textured Dirac cone.

RESUMO

We investigate the layer localization control of two-dimensional states in multilayer metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). For finite stackings of (NiC4S4)3 MOFs, the weak van der Waals coupling between adjacent layers leads to a Fermi level dependent distribution of the electronic states in the monolayers. Such distribution is reflected in the topological edge states of multilayer nanoribbons. Moreover, by applying an external electric field parallel to the stacking direction, the spatial localization of the electronic states can be controlled for a chosen Fermi energy. This localization behavior is studied comparing density functional theory calculations with a kagome lattice tight-binding model. Furthermore, for infinite stacked nanoribbons, a new V-gutter Dirac state is found in the side surfaces, which allows anisotropic current control by tuning the Fermi energy. Our results can be immediately extended to other kagome MOFs with eclipsed stackings, introducing a new degree of freedom (layer localization) to materials design.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to evaluate the intestinal morphometry of broilers at 42 days of age fed diets containing different levels of cottonseed oil, with and without addition of ferrous sulfate. A total of 560 male Ross chickens were used in a completely randomized design with a 4×2 factorial arrangement and five replications with 14 birds. The cottonseed oil levels tested were 0%, 2%, 4%, and 6%. At 42 days of age, one bird per replicate was collected for morphometric. Analyzed variables were villus height, crypt length and muscle wall thickness. The statistical analysis was performed using SAS, P=0.05. In the duodenum and ileum, there was no significant effect of interaction between the treatments. In the jejunum, only the length of the crypt, the treatment with cottonseed oil 2%, more ferrous sulfate resulted in lower values; however, the same oil content without ferrous sulfate led to a greater length, which was also observed in the treatment with 4% oil plus ferrous sulfate. Inclusion of cottonseed oil in broiler diets at 42 days of age does not impair their intestinal morphology. Supplementation with ferrous sulfate at these levels is unnecessary, since no improvement was observed in the intestinal morphometric.(AU)

Space- and time-resolved measurements of spin drift and diffusion are performed on a GaAs-hosted two-dimensional electron gas. For spins where forward drift is compensated by backward diffusion, we find a precession frequency in the absence of an external magnetic field. The frequency depends linearly on the drift velocity and is explained by the cubic Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction, for which drift leads to a spin precession angle twice that of spins that diffuse the same distance.

RESUMO

The fluoroscopy-guided renal arteriography was evaluated in order to be used as an auxiliary method in investigations and as a way to experimentally induce kidney diseases in swine. The technique was effective to obtain sharp images as well as to determine the area of renal irrigation. Despite its easiness, trained professionals are required to perform it.
