RESUMO

The relationships between patients speaking out and measured outcome were investigated over 18 months in an out-patient group. The parameters of therapeutic progress were derived from the Symptom Check List and individualized repertory grid rating scales. Each patient's verbal participation was compared to that of other group members and to his own participation over other measurement phases. Speaking out phases were associated with more chance of change and improvement, while silent phases were associated with less chance of change and an increased likelihood of negative change. This study demonstrates the use of a relatively non-disruptive measurement model in testing clinical hypotheses in single psychotherapy groups.

RESUMO

Psychological and emotional factors may determine, or greatly influence, the experience of pain. A review is presented of the concept of the pain prone patient, and the relationships between personality and pain. The importance of an understanding of the psychological meaning of pain is stressed in considering management strategies. Particular attention is directed to depression, anxiety, behavioural approaches and the placebo response. The interaction between the patient in pain and the doctor is discussed in relation to the doctor's needs.

RESUMO

A technique for measuring a patient's progress and outcome in group psychotherapy is presented. The various measured parameters are derived from the Symptom Check List plus individualized repertory grid rating scales. This measurement model was tested on an out-patient group over 18 months and shows potential as a device for measuring outcome in diverse types of psychotherapy groups.

RESUMO

An infant male presented at age 17 months with an established pseudarthrosis in a kyphoscoliotic right tibia. During the ensuing 6 years, three unsuccessful McFarland bypass bone grafts were performed. Then the distal end of the proximal fibula was placed into the medullary cavity of the proximal end of the distal tibia without disturbing the proximal portion of the fibula. This was augmented by autogenous bone graft. Union occurred in one year. The child has been followed for 7 years and the pseudarthrosis remains healed.
