RESUMO

A previously unreported tetragonal phase has been discovered in a epitaxially strained GdMnO3 thin films deposited on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. The tetragonal axis of the films grown up to a 35 nm thickness is perpendicular to the film surface and the basal lattice parameters are imposed by the cubic structure of the substrate. Furthermore, the emergence of a spontaneous electric polarization below ~32 K points to the stabilization of an improper ferroelectric phase at low temperatures, which is not observed in bulk GdMnO3. This work shows how strain engineering can be used to tailor the structure and properties of strongly correlated oxides.

RESUMO

In this study, we grew 5-layered SrBi4.25La0.75Ti4FeO18 (SBLFT) polycrystalline thin films (80-330 nm thick) via pulsed-laser deposition to study their ferroelectric and magnetoelectric response. Structural/microstructural analysis confirmed the formation of orthorhombic SBLFT with good crystallinity and randomly oriented Aurivillius phases. Detailed scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis of 120 nm film revealed a predominantly five-layered structure with the coexistence of four-layer stacking. Such stacking defects are found to be pertinent to the high structural flexibility of Bi-rich Aurivillius phases, alleviated by lattice strain. Raman spectral features at ambient temperatures depict the signature of the orthorhombic-tetragonal phase transition. SBLFT films have a strong ferroelectric nature (remanent polarization 2Pr of 35 µC cm-2) with a fatigue endurance up to 1010 cycles and strongly improved, switchable magnetization as opposed to its antiferromagnetic bulk counterpart. The scaling behavior of dynamic hysteresis reveals that ferroelectric domain reversal has good stability and low energy consumption. We observed the presence of SBLFT nanoregions (1-5 nm), distributed across the film, with Bi and Fe-rich compositions and oxygen vacancies that contribute to the weak ferromagnetic behavior mediated by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Subtle changes in the structural strain and lattice distortions of thin films with varied thicknesses led to distinct ferroic properties. Stronger ferroelectric polarization of 80 nm and 120 nm films compared to that of thicker ones can be due to structural strain and the possible rearrangement of BO6 octahedra. The observation of the improved magnetoelectric coefficient of 50 mV cm-1 Oe-1 for 120 nm film, as compared to that of several Aurivillius oxides, indicates that the structural strain modification in SBLFT is beneficial for the fatigue-free magnetic field switching of ferroelectric polarization. The structural strain of the unit cell as well as the presence of Bi- and ferromagnetic Fe-rich nanoregions was found to be responsible for the improved multiferroic behaviour of the SBLFT films.

RESUMO

This study provides a comprehensive insight into the effects of controlled off-stoichiometry on the structural and multiferroic properties of the hexagonal manganite LuMn1-xO3+δ (x = 0.02; δ ∼ 0), supported by neutron powder diffraction measurements confirming single phase P63cm symmetry and evidencing a relevant ferromagnetic component, below TN ∼ 90 K, which breaks the archetypal geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetic state typically ascribed to LuMnO3. The perturbations in the triangular disposition of spins prompt an additional electric polarization contribution and a clear enhancement of the magnetoelectric coupling which are in good agreement with the results of first principles calculations. In addition, Raman spectroscopy, dielectric permittivity, pyroelectric current and magnetic measurements as a function of temperature point out the precursor effects of the magnetic phase transitions involving a strong coupling between spins, lattice and electric order, even above the Néel temperature.

RESUMO

This study explores controlled off-stoichiometric LuMn1+zO3+δ (|z| < 0.1) compounds, intended to retain the utter LuMnO3 intrinsic hexagonal symmetry and ferroelectric properties. X-ray powder diffraction measurements evidenced a single phase P63cm structure. Thermo-gravimetric experiments show a narrow impact of oxygen vacancies while a distinguishable gas exchange at ∼700 K, a surprisingly lower temperature when compared to perovskite systems. A comparison of different nominal ceramics revealed pertinent structural and magnetic property variations owing to subtle self-doping effects. Deviations from the archetypal antiferromagnetic state were detected below ∼90 K suggesting local rearrangements of the nominal Mn(3+) ions matrix, breaking the ideal geometrical spin frustration, leading to a non-compensated magnetic structure.

RESUMO

We report polycrystalline BaTiO3 with cooperative magnetization behavior associated with the scarce presence of about 113 atomic ppm of Fe ions, clearly displaying magnetoelectric coupling with significant changes in magnetization (up to ΔM/M ≈ 32%) at the ferroelectric transitions. We find that Fe ions are segregated mostly at the interfaces between grain boundaries and an Fe-rich phase, forming a self-composite with high magnetoelectric coupling above room temperature. We compare our results with ab initio calculations and other experimental results found in the literature, proposing mechanisms that could be behind the magnetoelectric coupling within the ferroelectric matrix. These findings open the way for further strategies to optimize interfacial magnetoelectric couplings.

RESUMO

Lead-free particulate multiferroic composites of [0.94(Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3-0.06 BaTiO3]:(Co0.6Zn0.4)(Fe1.7Mn0.3)O4 were synthesized and magnetoelectric (ME) properties were studied. X-ray diffraction and microstructural studies indicated the formation of a two-phase composite system without any impurities. The shift of Raman modes corresponding to ferroelectric and ferrite phases was assigned to the induced strain amid the formation of a two-phase system, in relation to the fraction of each phase in the samples. A strong local piezoresponse and hysteresis loops observed for composites established the ferroelectric properties at a nanoscale. Magnetostriction measurements revealed values of λ11 = -10.4 and λ12 = 5.3 ppm and piezomagnetic coefficient dλ11/dH = -0.0087 ppm Oe(-1) at 0.45 kOe for a composite with a ferrite concentration of 35 mol%. A maximum change of 18.5% in magnetization after electrical poling indicates a strong magnetoelectric response of the present composites followed by a direct ME coefficient of 8.2 mV cm(-1) Oe(-1). Our studies point to the fact that the present multiferroic composites having strong ME coupling are useful for lead-free electronic applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor is the most common movement disorder in adults, but its exact etiology and pathophysiology are still not fully understood. There is some consensus, however, about the involvement of the cerebellum and accumulating evidence points towards a dysfunction of the gabaergic system. We hypothesize that the serotonin neurotransmission system may also play a role as it does in tremor in Parkinson disease. This study aimed to investigate the association between the severity of tremor symptoms and the gabaergic and serotoninergic neurotransmission systems in essential tremor. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We measured the tremor clinical rating scale score and acquired DASB and Flumazenil PET scans in 10 patients who presented with essential tremor at different stages of clinical severity. Statistically significant correlations were sought between the scale scores and parametric binding potential images. RESULTS: The correlation analysis of cerebellar Flumazenil uptake and tremor clinical rating scale scores reached statistical significance (R2 = 0.423, p = 0.041), whereas no association was detected in the DASB scans. CONCLUSIONS: The severity of tremor correlated with the abnormalities found in GABA receptor binding, suggesting a primary gabaergic deficiency or a functional abnormality at the level of GABA(A) receptor subtypes. These results may assist in the rational development of new pharmacological treatments for essential tremor.

RESUMO

Rodent models are frequently used in aging research to investigate biochemical age effects and aid in the development of therapies for pathological and non-pathological age-related degenerative processes. In order to validate the use of animal models in aging research and pave the way for longitudinal intervention-based animal studies, the consistency of cerebral aging processes across species needs to be evaluated. The dopaminergic system seems particularly susceptible to the aging process, and one of the most consistent findings in human brain aging research is a decline in striatal D2-like receptor (D2R) availability, quantifiable by positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. In this study, we aimed to assess whether similar age effects can be discerned in rat brains, using in vivo molecular imaging with the radioactive compound [(11)C]-raclopride. We observed a robust decline in striatal [(11)C]-raclopride uptake in the aged rats in comparison to the young control group, comprising a 41% decrement in striatal binding potential. In accordance with human studies, these results indicate that substantial reductions in D2R availability can be measured in the aged striatal complex. Our findings suggest that rat and human brains exhibit similar biochemical alterations with age in the striatal dopaminergic system, providing support for the pertinence of rodent models in aging research.

RESUMO

The upwelling systems of the eastern boundaries of the world's oceans are susceptible to harmful algal blooms (HABs) because they are highly productive, nutrient-rich environments, prone to high-biomass blooms. This review identifies those aspects of the physical environment important in the development of HABs in upwelling systems through description and comparison of bloom events in the Benguela, California and Iberia systems. HAB development is dictated by the influence of wind stress on the surface boundary layer through a combination of its influence on surface mixed-layer characteristics and shelf circulation patterns. The timing of HABs is controlled by windstress fluctuations and buoyancy inputs at the seasonal, event and interannual scales. Within this temporal framework, various mesoscale features that interrupt typical upwelling circulation patterns, determine the spatial distribution of HABs. The inner shelf in particular provides a mosaic of shifting habitats, some of which favour HABs. Changes in coastline configuration and orientation, and bottom topography are important in determining the distribution of HABs through their influence on water stratification and retention. A spectrum of coastline configurations, including headlands, capes, peninsulas, Rías, bays and estuaries, representing systems of increasing isolation from the open coast and consequent increasing retention times, are assessed in terms of their vulnerability to HABs.
