P and Ca requirements for Japanese quail.

Four experiments were conducted to estimate the phosphorus and calcium requirements for weight maintenance and weight gain in Japanese quails during their growth phase from 16 to 36 days. Japanese quails aged 16 days were used for estimating the phosphorous and calcium requirements for weight maintenance or weight gain, with these quails composing each reference slaughter group and the others distributed in a completely randomized design, housed in cages of galvanized wire (33 × 33 × 16 cm) that were stored in acclimatized chambers with specific environmental temperatures. The light programme used during the 20-day experimental period was 24 h of artificial light. Analysis of the data showed that the prediction equations for estimating the phosphorus and calcium requirements for weight maintenance and weight gain of Japanese quails between 16 and 36 days of age were P (g/quail/day) = P0.75 *(9.3695 + 7.7397*T) + 9.70*WG, in which P is the phosphorus requirement, and Ca (g/quail/day) = P0.75 *(363.99 - 8.0262*T) + 28.15*WG, in which Ca is the calcium requirement, P is BW (kg), T is temperature (°C) and WG (g/quail/day).

The hard choice for alternative biofuels to diesel in Brazil.

This paper selects biofuel scenarios to substitute diesel in Brazil based on oil reserves increase, diesel imports, CO(2) emissions, crops agronomic yields, byproducts marketing and social impacts. This hard task still considers that agricultural practices in developing countries have large social impacts. Brazil presents high consumption of diesel oil in transport; low agronomic yield of traditional vegetable oil crops, which demand large cultivation areas contrasting with microalgae and palm oils which present high productivity. Concerning technologies, thermal cracking and transesterification of vegetable oils present a difficult economic situation related to vegetable oils price, food competition and glycerin market; BTL technology, meaning thermal gasification of biomass to liquids, faces problems related to low density of biomaterials and low viscosity of synthetic biodiesel produced. Biorefinery algal integrated systems and co-solvent technology to introduce up to 8% of ethanol into diesel seem to be feasible routes to reduce diesel consumption.

[Single daily dose of verapamil (COER-24 180/24 mg) in mild and moderate hypertension evaluated by ambulatory blood pressure monitoring]. / Verapamil COER-24 180/240 mg na hipertensão arterial leve a moderada em dose única diária avaliado pela monitorização ambulatorial da pressão arterial.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the anti-hypertensive effect of verapamil COER-24 180/240 mg in a single dose at bedtime as single therapy in mild to moderate hypertensives. METHODS: A multicentric, open, placebo controlled study of 81 hypertensive patients older than 20 years-old followed to 8 weeks. Blood pressure was measured in doctor's office and by 24 h ambulatory monitoring (ABPM). RESULTS: We observed a decreased in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in doctor's office at 4th and 8th weeks. ABPM showed that both systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure, heart rate and the mean 24-hour blood pressure load decreased after the 8-week treatment. In addition, there was a reduction of the double-product, especially in the morning and 68% of the patients didn't have any adverse events. CONCLUSION: The therapy verapamil COER-24 180/240 mg in a single dose is useful for mild and moderate hypertensive patients, with significant pressure decrease in both office blood pressure measurements and in the ABPM/24 hours, as well as showing good tolerability.
