RESUMO

Indium and bismuth are technologically important elements, in particular as oxides for optoelectronic applications. 115 In and 209 Bi are both I = 9/2 nuclei with high natural abundances and moderately high frequencies but large nuclear electric quadrupole moments. Leveraging the quadrupolar interaction as a measure of local symmetry and polyhedral distortions for these nuclei could provide powerful insights on a range of applied materials. However, the absence of reported nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) parameters on these nuclei, particularly in oxides, hinders their use by the broader materials community. In this contribution, solid-state 115 In and 209 Bi NMR of three recently discovered quaternary bismuth or indium oxides are reported, supported by density functional theory calculations, numerical simulations, diffraction and additional multinuclear (27 Al, 69,71 Ga, and 121 Sb) solid-state NMR measurements. The compounds LiIn2 SbO6 , BiAlTeO6 , and BiGaTeO6 are measured without special equipment at 9.4 T, demonstrating that wideline techniques such as the QCPMG pulse sequence and frequency-stepped acquisition can enable straightforward extraction of quadrupolar tensor information in I = 9/2 115 In and 209 Bi even in sites with large quadrupolar coupling constants. Relationships are described between the NMR observables and local site symmetry. These are amongst the first reports of the NMR parameters of 115 In, 121 Sb, and 209 Bi in oxides.

RESUMO

Fluoridation of HfO2 was carried out with three commonly used solid-state fluoridation agents: PVDF, PTFE, and NH4HF2. Clear and reproducible differences are observed in the reaction products of the fluoropolymer reagents and NH4HF2 with the latter more readily reacting in air. Strong evidence of distinct, previously unreported hafnium oxyfluoride phases is produced by both reactions, and efforts to isolate them were successful for the air-NH4HF2 reaction. Synchrotron XRD, 19F NMR, and elemental analysis were employed to characterize the phase-pure material which appears to be analogous to known Zr-O-F phases with anion-deficient α-UO3 structures such as Zr7O9F10. Comparison with the hydrolysis of ß-HfF4 under identical conditions depicts that the NH4HF2 route produces the oxyfluoride with greater selectivity and at lower temperatures. Thermodynamic calculations were employed to explain this result. Potential reaction pathways for the NH4HF2 fluoridation of HfO2 are discussed.

RESUMO

The anion-deficient fluorite-related family of materials exhibits a number of commercially useful properties arising from the specific arrangement of anion vacancies in each structure. One recently reported member, Zn0.456In1.084Ge0.46O3, is the only known example with its particular complex structure in which cation coordinations span one 4-coordinate (4b), two 6-coordinate (8e and 16f), and one 8-coordinate (4a) site. A new, complete, solid solution (CuxZn1-x)0.456In1.084Ge0.46O3, (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) has been discovered via the isovalent substitution of Cu2+ for Zn2+, significantly expanding the known phase space of this structure. Synchrotron X-ray data confirm the ZIGO structure over the entire composition range. Inclusion of Cu in the structure is found to occur exclusively at the 16f site, increasing the number of cations mixed on that site from three to four, while all others remain singly occupied, including the other 6-coordinate (8e) position. Furthermore, transmission electron microscopy investigations show no evidence of long-range cation ordering. Thus, disorder on the 16f site appears remarkably favorable in this otherwise highly ordered structure. Nonideal trends in the lattice parameters and diffuse reflectance spectra as a function of Cu content are examined. Further implications of the mixed order and disorder in the solid solution for materials discovery and possible properties of interest are briefly discussed.

RESUMO

Magnetoresistance is the change in a material's electrical resistance in response to an applied magnetic field. Materials with large magnetoresistance have found use as magnetic sensors, in magnetic memory, and in hard drives at room temperature, and their rarity has motivated many fundamental studies in materials physics at low temperatures. Here we report the observation of an extremely large positive magnetoresistance at low temperatures in the non-magnetic layered transition-metal dichalcogenide WTe2: 452,700 per cent at 4.5 kelvins in a magnetic field of 14.7 teslas, and 13 million per cent at 0.53 kelvins in a magnetic field of 60 teslas. In contrast with other materials, there is no saturation of the magnetoresistance value even at very high applied fields. Determination of the origin and consequences of this effect, and the fabrication of thin films, nanostructures and devices based on the extremely large positive magnetoresistance of WTe2, will represent a significant new direction in the study of magnetoresistivity.

RESUMO

Elevated levels of fluoride (F(-)) in groundwaters of granitic and basaltic terrains pose a major environmental problem and are affecting millions of people all over the world. Hydroxyapatite (HA) has been shown to be a strong sorbent for F(-); however, low permeability of synthetic HA results in poor sorption efficiency. Here we provide a novel method of synthesizing nano- to micrometer sized HA on the surfaces of granular limestone to improve the sorption efficiency of the HA-based filter. Our experiments with granular limestone (38-63, 125-500 µm) and dissolved PO4(3-) (0.5-5.3 mM) as a function of pH (6-8) and temperature (25-80 °C) indicated rapid formation of nano- to micrometer sized HA crystals on granular limestone with the maximum surface coverage at lower pH and in the presence of multiple additions of aqueous PO4(3-). The HA crystal morphology varied with the above variables. The sorption kinetics and magnitude of F(-) sorption by HA-coated-fine limestone are comparable to those of pure HA, and the F(-) levels dropped to below the World Health Organization's drinking water limit of 79 µM for F(-) concentrations commonly encountered in contaminated potable waters, suggesting that these materials could be used as effective filters. Fluorine XANES spectra of synthetic HA reacted with F(-) suggest that the mode of sorption is through the formation of fluoridated-HA or fluorapatite at low F(-) levels and fluorite at high F(-) loadings.

RESUMO

The ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide was vaporized at 420 K, and the ion-pair constituents were entrained in a beam of liquid He nanodroplets and cooled to 0.4 K. The vapor pressure was optimized such that each He droplet picked up a single ion-pair from the gas phase. Infrared spectroscopy in the CH stretch region reveals bands that are assigned to intact ion-pairs on the basis of comparisons to ab initio harmonic frequency computations of 23 low energy isomers. The He droplet spectrum is consistent with a weighted sum of the computed harmonic spectra, in which the weights are determined from ab initio computations of the relative free energies at 420 K. Anharmonic resonance polyads in the CH stretch region are treated explicitly, which improves the agreement between the experiment and computed spectra for ion-pairs. For isomers having a strong cation···anion hydrogen bonding interaction, the imidazolium C(2)-H stretch fundamental is shifted to lower energy and into resonance with the overtones and combination bands of the imidazolium ring stretching modes, resulting in a spectral complexity in the CH stretch region that is fully resolved in the He droplet spectrum. The assignment of the infrared spectrum to ion-pairs is confirmed through polarization spectroscopy measurements that reveal the permanent electric dipole moment of the He-solvated species to be 11 ± 2 D. The computed permanent electric dipole moments for the low energy isomers of the [emim(+)][Tf2N(-)] ion-pairs fall in the range 9-13 D, whereas the computed dipole moments of decomposition products of the ionic liquid are less than 4.3 D.

RESUMO

The neurokinin 3 receptor (NK3R) is a G protein-coupled receptor that is expressed in brain and is highly expressed by magnocellular vasopressinergic neurons in both the paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic nuclei (SON) of the hypothalamus. Hyperosmolarity causes a ligand-mediated internalization of NK3Rs to the cytoplasm and to the nuclei of vasopressinergic PVN neurons. This receptor activation-dependent pathway is presumed to be a means to directly transmit synaptic signals from the cell membrane to the nucleus. The present study evaluated in vivo the subnuclear domains that associate with NK3R. Rats were administered 2 M NaCl (intragastric) or no intragastric load, and 40 min later, the PVN was dissected and nuclei were isolated. Using double-immuno-transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we show that, compared with controls, hyperosmolarity causes a significant increase in NK3R Immunogold beads in the nucleus of PVN neurons. Furthermore, NK3R spatially colocalized with histone H4 and with highly acetylated H4 in nuclei isolated from the PVN of rats administered 2 M NaCl, but not in nuclei from control rats. Next, coimmunoprecipitation experiments showed that acetylated H4, as well as acetylated H3, were pulled down with NK3R in the PVN nuclear enriched fraction from rats treated with 2 M NaCl, but not from control rats. In response to hyperosmolarity, NK3R is transported to the nucleus of PVN neurons and associates with transcriptionally active chromatin, where it may influence the transcription of genes.

RESUMO

Helium nanodroplet isolation and a tunable quantum cascade laser are used to probe the fundamental CO stretch bands of aluminum carbonyl complexes, Al-(CO)(n) (n ≤ 5). The droplets are doped with single aluminum atoms via the resistive heating of an aluminum wetted tantalum wire. The downstream sequential pick-up of CO molecules leads to the rapid formation and cooling of Al-(CO)(n) clusters within the droplets. Near 1900 cm(-1), rotational fine structure is resolved in bands that are assigned to the CO stretch of a linear (2)Π(1/2) Al-CO species and the asymmetric and symmetric CO stretch vibrations of a planar C(2v) Al-(CO)(2) complex in a (2)B(1) electronic state. Bands corresponding to clusters with n ≥ 3 lack resolved rotational fine structure; nevertheless, the small frequency shifts from the n = 2 bands indicate that these clusters consist of an Al-(CO)(2) core with additional CO molecules attached via van der Waals interactions. A second n = 2 band is observed near the CO stretch of Al-CO, indicating a local minimum on the n = 2 potential consisting of an "unreacted" (Al-CO)-CO cluster. The line width of this band is ∼0.3 cm(-1), which is about 30 times broader than the transitions within the Al-CO band. The additional broadening is consistent with a homogeneous mechanism corresponding to a rapid vibrational excitation induced reaction within the (Al-CO)-CO cluster to form the covalently bonded Al-(CO)(2) complex. Ab initio CCSD(T) calculations and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses are carried out to investigate the nature of the bonding in the n = 1, 2 complexes. The NBO calculations show that both π-donation (from the occupied aluminum p orbital into a π* antibonding CO orbital) and σ-donation (from CO into the empty aluminum p orbitals) play a significant role in the bonding, analogous to transition-metal carbonyl complexes. The large red shift observed for the CO stretch vibrations is consistent with this bonding analysis.

RESUMO

Infrared spectra in the HCl stretch region (2600-2900 cm(-1)) are presented for small, mixed (HCl)(m)(H(2)O)(n) clusters solvated in helium nanodroplets. Sharp bands associated with the Cl-H...Cl stretch vibrations in m:n = 1:1, 2:1, 2:2, and 3:1 clusters are superimposed on a broad background that increases in intensity as larger clusters are grown within the droplets. The broad background is determined to be partially due to mixed clusters with m > 3 and n > 2. The sharp bands are assigned to specific cluster compositions, m:n, via pick-up pressure dependence studies and optically selected mass spectrometry. Orientation of the clusters is achieved with the application of a large electric field to the laser/droplet beam interaction region. The intensity of each band is measured as a function of the applied field strength. Simulations of this electric field dependence based on ab initio calculations of permanent dipole moments and vibrational transition moment angles leads to definitive structural assignments for each sharp band. The 2:1 complex is cyclic, and a band associated with the 2:2 cluster is determined to arise from the nonalternating cyclic structure.

RESUMO

A case of orbital metastasis of cervical keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma is presented. The patient, in remission from primary cervical and ovarian cancers, presented with complaints of left eye ptosis and pain. Examination revealed the presence of a moderately tender mass along the left supra-temporal orbital rim and downward displacement of the left globe. Computed tomography revealed a poorly circumscribed mass with superior lateral wall bone loss. Excised tissue contained invasive, poorly differentiated nests of pan keratin and epithelial membrane antigen-positive squamous cells with numerous pleomorphic multinucleated giant cells. Multiple treatment regimes were unsuccessful, and the patient expired due to disease complications after 3 months.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To document reversible corneal edema caused by amantadine in a pediatric patient. METHODS: A 14-year-old boy with a neurologic tremor was referred for bilateral visual loss. Our examination disclosed bilateral corneal edema without ocular inflammation. Pachymetry confirmed significantly increased corneal thickness above 900 microm. RESULTS: Review of the patient's medical information revealed recent institution of amantadine as a means to control the patient's tremor. On cessation of this agent, rapid resolution of corneal edema and recovery of visual acuity occurred. Repeat pachymetry measurement revealed normal corneal thickness. CONCLUSION: In cases of corneal edema and in the absence of any identifiable ocular causes, a review of toxic effects of systemic medication should be undertaken. Amantadine can cause corneal decompensation and needs to be considered as part of the differential diagnosis of corneal edema.

RESUMO

A 32-year-old white male presented to the Jones Eye Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences with blurred vision of the right eye (OD) and severe bilateral retrobulbar pain. He had an eight-year history of Wegener's granulomatosis. On examination there was optic disc edema OD and extensive bilateral orbital involvement with compression of the right optic nerve by neuroimaging studies. Optic nerve compression is rare in Wegener's granulomatosis. The ophthalmic manifestations are reviewed.

RESUMO

A 29-year-old African American man presented to the emergency department at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences with a fishhook perforating the cornea of the left eye (OS) extending into the anterior chamber. The fishhook was removed via its entrance wound and was subsequently repaired. Fishhook injuries to the eye can result in profound visual impairment. Management of these injuries is dependent on the involved ocular structures and location of the hook. Visual prognosis can be profoundly affected by the initial management. Surgical management options are reviewed.
