RESUMO

The Helminthological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute is the biggest in Latin America and it is among the largest collections at worldwide reference level, with around 40,000 sets of specimens and approximately one million individual specimens. It contains helminths parasites of vertebrate and invertebrate animals that form part of the fauna of Brazil and other countries. The samples comprise holotypes, paratypes and representative specimens of Platyhelminthes, Acanthocephala, Nematoda and other non-helminth phyla, such as Annelida and Arthropoda. Some of the samples preserved in liquid media were found to have dried out. This made it impossible to analyze these samples morphologically for taxonomic purposes. The aim of this study was to test techniques used for rehydration of the tegument of specimens that had been found to have dried out and present protocols for such techniques. A total of 528 specimens that either no longer were immersed in preservatives or had already dried out were analyzed: 96 digenetic trematodes, 45 cestodes, 22 acanthocephalans, 357 nematodes, four hirudineans and four pentastomid crustaceans. The technique of rehydration using only distilled water on the specimens proved to be efficient for recovering tegument malleability, for all samples analyzed in this present study.

RESUMO

A total of 132 flounder specimens (60 Paralichthys isosceles, 36 Paralichthys patagonicus and 36 Xystreurys rasile) were collected off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The fish were measured, necropsied, and had their organs investigated for hemiurid and lecithasterid digenean trematodes and camallanid and cucullanid nematodes. Taxonomic identification of the parasites was based on morphological and morphometric characters and was conducted using bright-field and scanning electron microscopies. The trematodes Lecithochirium monticellii and Aponurus laguncula were found parasitizing P. isosceles, P. patagonicus and X. rasile while the nematodes Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) halitrophus and Cucullanus bonaerensis were found parasitizing P. isosceles and X. rasile and P. isosceles, P. patagonicus and X. rasile, respectively. Parasite indices of prevalence, mean intensity, mean abundance, and range of infection, as well as infection site, were evaluated for each parasite species. This study allowed to evidence the first occurrence of P. patagonicus by L. monticellii; X. rasile by A. laguncula and P. (S.) halitrophus; and P. isosceles and P. patagonicus by C. bonaerensis in the Western South Atlantic Ocean.

BACKGROUND: Parent to child transmission is the major mode of spread of HIV. An effective national health program (PPTCT) has been designed under NACO which helps in reducing the spread of HIV by vertical transmission and improving the life of the women and her baby. METHODS: A retrospective study was done at a tertiary care hospital, including pregnant women registered and delivered, and those who came directly in labour at the hospital during a period of 10 years from January 2010 to December 2019. Pretest counselling, HIV testing, Post-test counselling were done, and antiretroviral prophylaxis was given as per the NACP guidelines. Sociodemographic characteristics, obstetric outcome and efficacy of PPTCT services were analysed. RESULTS: Out of the 63,947 antenatal mothers included, 61,061 (95.4%) accepted HIV testing. 177 of these tested positive (0.289%) with a significant reduction in the seroprevalence over the decade. Majority of seropositive women were primigravida; housewives from urban areas, from low income and educational background and with no history of any contraceptive use. Out of 718 live births, the MTCT rate was found to be 4.5% at 6 weeks over the whole decade and was noted to be 1.8 % at 18 months which is well within the goal of PPTCT program and hence elucidating the success. Seventy-four spouses of the 177 seropositive women tested positive, 55 tested negative and 49 did not undergo the HIV testing. Decline in the number of partners not undergoing testing was elicited. The discordant couple rate in the study was 31% and showed variable trend over the decade. CONCLUSIONS: Our study has observed an overall increase in efficacy of PPTCT in terms of increased utilization of PPTCT through the decade, decrease in the vertical transmission and seroprevalence rate, increase in the acceptance rates of HIV testing by partner almost conquering the goal of NACO.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Ensuring safety of the mother along with the delivery of a healthy baby is the ultimate objective of all obstetricians. Labour induction is increasingly becoming one of the most common obstetric interventions in India. The aim of the study is to compare the feto-maternal outcome of induction of labour versus spontaneous labour in postdated women. METHOD: This was a prospective observational comparative study. A total of 100 patients were selected, 50 who had induction of labour (study group) and 50 who had spontaneous labour (control). A structured proforma and partographs were used to obtain data. RESULT: 42% nulliparous women had induction of labour as compared to 29% multiparous women. The rate of cesarean section (58%) was substantially higher in those who had been induced. Non-progression of labour or failure of induction was the commonest indication for cesarean section. Post-partum haemorrhage was a complication found more commonly in the study group. Perineal tears were found more commonly in the control group. The mean birth weight of babies born to mothers who had been induced was significantly higher than that of those born to women who went into spontaneous labour. The APGAR scores were comparable in both groups. There was a higher incidence of hyperbilirubinemia in the study group. CONCLUSION: Although induction of labour is a relatively safe procedure, some foetal and maternal risks were found to be higher in induced group than in those with spontaneous labour. Induction must be carried out only when necessary and not as a routine elective procedure.

The aim of this study was to investigate the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic in the city of Natal, RN, considering the age group of patients affected by the disease and their possible comorbidities, through epidemiological indicators. Therefore, we took a retrospective approach of the numbers, highlighting the prevalence of COVID-19, from the confirmed cases in the year 2020 until the date of January 26, 2021. This is a study with a transversal methodology, of a qualitative and quantitative nature. Patient documents were sought in the Epidemiological Bulletin of the Public Health Secretariat (SESAP/RN), Central Laboratory (LACEN/RN), Kaggle - Coronavirus Brazil, Ministry of Health (MH) Department of Primary Care (DPC), National Registry of Health Facilities (NRHF), SUS Virtual Learning Environment at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (AVASUS/UFRN), Google COVID-19 Community Mobility Reports, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in the Coronavirus Impact Panel. In Brazil there are already more than 9,834,513 confirmed cases and almost 239,245 thousand deaths (data collected until February 15, 2021) and in the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) there are 147,631 confirmed new cases and 3,381 deaths (data from February 15, 2021). The current scenario requires preventive actions of self-care and collective protection, so that, in this way, there is a reduction in the risks of the virus infecting people from the most vulnerable groups, but this requires the involvement of the mass population.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is the most challenging health crisis that we are facing today. Against the backdrop of this pandemic, it becomes imperative to study the effects of this infection on pregnancy and its outcome. Hence, the present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of COVID-19 infection on the maternal morbidity and mortality, the course of labour as well as the neonatal outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 977 pregnant women were included in the study, from 1st April to 15th May 2020 at a tertiary care hospital. There were 141 women who tested COVID positive and remaining 836 patients were included in the COVID negative group. Findings were compared in both the groups. RESULTS: The incidence of COVID positive pregnant women was found to be 14.43%. More patients delivered by LSCS in the COVID positive and the COVID negative group (50%) as compared to COVID negative group (47%), (p > 0.05). Low APGAR score (0-3) was observed in 2(1.52%) neonates of COVID positive mothers and in 15 (1.91%) neonates of COVID negative mothers. Overall most of the babies were healthy. Out of all babies tested, 3 were detected positive initially which were retested on day 5 and were found to be negative. CONCLUSION: There is no significant effect of COVID infection on maternal and foetal outcome in pregnancy and there is no evidence of vertical transmission of the COVID-19 infection but long-term follow-up of these babies is recommended.

RESUMO

Abstract The aim of the present study was to identify, through morphological and morphometric analyses, the species of trypanorhynch cestodes found as plerocerci in the intestinal serosa of Mugil liza and to determine their parasitic indices. One hundred and fifty specimens of this mullet collected off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro were necropsied and the trypanorhynch cestodes found were fixed and preserved as whole mounts for morphological analysis. The plerocerci were identified as Callitetrarhynchus gracilis and Pterobothrium crassicole, both with a prevalence of 0.67%, an intensity of 1 and abundance of 0.0067, in single infections. This is the first record of a trypanorhynch cestode parasitizing M. liza in Brazil. Although the parasitic indexes were low, from a hygienic-sanitary perspective the plerocerci of these species are visible to the naked eye, and thus can disgust consumers and make marketing the fish unfeasible.

RESUMO

Abstract Flounders are commercially and economically important fish. A total of 120 specimens of flounders (60 Paralichthys isosceles, 30 Paralichthys patagonicus and 30 Xystreurys rasile) were collected off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The fish were measured, necropsied and filleted, and then had their organs investigated for acanthocephalans. Taxonomic identification of the parasites was based on morphological, morphometric and genetic characters. Paralichthys isosceles and P. patagonicus were parasitized by juveniles of Serrasentis sagittifer, Bolbosoma turbinella, Corynosoma australe and C. cetaceum; Xystreurys rasile was parasitized by C. australe. Genetic characterization confirmed the identification of specimens of Bolbosoma turbinella and Corynosoma australe, as demonstrated by phylogenetic analyses using both ITS and cox1 molecular targets. Parasite indices of prevalence, intensity, mean intensity, abundance, mean abundance, and range of infection, as well as infection site, were evaluated for each parasite species. This is the first report of S. sagittifer parasitizing P. isosceles and P. patagonicus, and B. turbinella parasitizing P. patagonicus.
