RESUMO

Purpose: Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face many problems in their marital lives. Autism is a developmental disorder, emerging during childhood that affects development across various domains. Studies suggest that autism prevalence rates are increasing, and research shows that parents of children with ASD frequently experience high levels of parenting stress. Marital compatibility is fulfilled when couples have the sense of satisfaction and contentment from each other. This study was done to analyze self-compassion and cognitive flexibility in relation with marital compatibility in parents having children with ASD. Methods: A sample size with 100 married couples, who referred to autism centers, was selected after clinical interviews. The research tools included structural clinical interview (DSM SCID), self-compassion scales questionnaire, cognitive flexibility inventory questionnaire, and marital compatibility test questionnaire, which were completed by the participants. Results: The research is a correlational descriptive study. Data analysis was done by the path analysis method. The findings showed that there was a significant relation between self-compassion, cognitive flexibility, and marital compatibility. Conclusions: In this study, it could be concluded that compassion via flexibility can have indirect positive effects on marital compatibility as two features of self-compassion and cognitive flexibility can help parents of children with ASD to be more compatible and flexible in their marital lives.

In this study, the effect of exposure to an 8 mT, 50 Hz extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field (ELF EMF) on memory consolidation of adult male and female mice was studied. For this purpose male and female mice were randomly distributed among six groups (n = 10 in each group). Using passive avoidance task, despite its natural tendency, mouse learns to stay on a small platform to avoidant electric shock. Immediately after the learning session, laboratory animals in the experimental groups were placed in an 8 mT, 50 Hz sinusoidal EMF for 4 h. The second male and female groups were sham exposed (exposure device off) and the third groups were considered as the controls. Twenty-four hours after the learning session, the animals were placed on small platform again and step-down latency was measured as the memory consolidation index. Significant (p < 0.05) decreases were determined among groups in memory function and results showed that exposure to an 8 mT, 50 Hz EMF for 4 h has devastating effects on memory consolidation in male and female mice.

Learning was evaluated using a passive avoidance learning procedure in a standard wooden box, in which, despite their instinctive tendencies, mice learn to stay on a small platform to avoidant an electric shock. Before each learning session, the animals were exposed to an 8 mT, 50 Hz ELF created by a round coil. Immediately after 60 min exposure to the ELF-EMF, the mice were subjected to avoidance learning. The animals in the sham-exposed control group were placed in the coil for 60 min but were not exposed to the EMF and were subjected to the same behavioral procedures as the experimental group. The comparison of learned behaviors in the experimental and control groups showed that exposure to an 8 mT, 50 Hz ELF for 60 min significantly affected passive avoidance learning in both male (p < .023) and female (p < .015) mice.
