Barking geckos (genus Ptenopus) are terrestrial, burrowing lizards endemic to southern Africa, currently with three recognised species. Two species are range-restricted (P. kochi and P. carpi) and display clear differences in substrate preference (soft sand vs. hard gravel). The third and most widespread species, P. garrulus, occurs on a variety of substrates of differing hardness, across potential geographic barriers, and over a steep climatic gradient. Variations in morphology and advertisement calls indicates that P. garrulus may be a species complex. Two subspecies of P. garrulus are currently recognised: P. g. maculatus and P. g. garrulus. To investigate species boundaries, we produced the first comprehensive phylogeny for the genus. We used a novel application of multiple regression on matrices models to assess multiple environmental drivers of diversification, as contrasted to isolation by distance. We show that P. kochi, P. carpi, and P. g. garrulus are valid species, but that P. g. maculatus is a paraphyletic complex of five previously unrecognised taxa. Specialisation onto different substrates was likely the main driver of divergence, with parapatric occurrence of two to four clades occurring at each of the three substrate transition zones identified a priori. The region encompasses diverse bioclimatic regions and potential geographic barriers, and these likely played a role in some divergence events.

Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) are vectors of the tropical neglected diseases sleeping sickness in humans and nagana in animals. The elimination of these diseases is linked to control of the vector. The sterile insect technique (SIT) is an environment-friendly method that has been shown to be effective when applied in an area-wide integrated pest management approach. However, as irradiated males conserve their vectorial competence, there is the potential risk of trypanosome transmission with their release in the field. Analyzing the interaction between the tsetse fly and its microbiota, and between different microbiota and the trypanosome, might provide important information to enhance the fly's resistance to trypanosome infection. This study on the prevalence of Spiroplasma in wild populations of seven tsetse species from East, West, Central and Southern Africa showed that Spiroplasma is present only in Glossina fuscipes fuscipes and Glossina tachinoides. In G. tachinoides, a significant deviation from independence in co-infection with Spiroplasma and Trypanosoma spp. was observed. Moreover, Spiroplasma infections seem to significantly reduce the density of the trypanosomes, suggesting that Spiroplasma might enhance tsetse fly's refractoriness to the trypanosome infections. This finding might be useful to reduce risks associated with the release of sterile males during SIT implementation in trypanosome endemic areas.


Title: Prévalence de Spiroplasma et interaction avec le microbiote des Glossina tachinoides sauvages. Abstract: Les mouches tsé-tsé (Diptera : Glossinidae) sont les vecteurs de maladies tropicales négligées, la maladie du sommeil chez l'homme et la nagana chez les animaux. L'élimination de ces maladies est liée à la lutte contre le vecteur. La technique de l'insecte stérile (TIS) est une méthode respectueuse de l'environnement qui s'est révélée efficace lorsqu'elle est appliquée dans le cadre d'une approche de lutte antiparasitaire intégrée à l'échelle d'une zone. Cependant, comme les mâles irradiés conservent leur compétence vectorielle, il existe un risque potentiel de transmission des trypanosomes lors de la libération des mâles sur le terrain. L'analyse de l'interaction entre la mouche tsé-tsé et son microbiote, et entre différents microbiotes et le trypanosome, pourrait fournir des informations importantes pour améliorer la résistance de la mouche à l'infection trypanosomienne. Cette étude sur la prévalence de Spiroplasma dans les populations sauvages de sept espèces de glossines d'Afrique de l'Est, de l'Ouest, centrale et australe a montré que Spiroplasma est présent uniquement chez Glossina fuscipes fuscipes et Glossina tachinoides. Chez G. tachinoides, un écart significatif par rapport à l'indépendance dans la co-infection par Spiroplasma et Trypanosoma spp. a été observé. De plus, les infections à Spiroplasma semblent réduire considérablement la densité des trypanosomes, ce qui suggère que Spiroplasma pourrait renforcer le caractère réfractaire de la mouche tsé-tsé aux infections trypanosomiennes. Cette découverte pourrait être utile pour réduire le risque associé à la libération de mâles stériles lors de la mise en œuvre de la TIS dans les zones d'endémie trypanosomienne.

Speciation by polyploidization has been documented to have independently occurred in 12 families of anuran amphibians. Tomopterna tandyi was described as a South African allotetraploid species of sand frogs in the family Pyxicephalidae. Recent taxonomic revisions and new species descriptions in the genus present problems with respect to the evolution of this tetraploid species. Chromosomes, mitochondrial and nuclear gene sequences, isozymes, and male mating calls were examined for T. tandyi and for diploid species of Tomopterna. Mitochondrial sequences confirmed the diploid species, T. adiastola, to be the maternal ancestor that gave rise to the tetraploid about 5 mya. Nuclear sequences and isozymes reveal a complex reticulation of paternal ancestry that may be explained by occasional hybridization of T. tandyi with diploid species of Tompoterna at various times in sympatric populations. Interspecific diploid to tetraploid gene introgression is suspected to have also occurred in Australian and North American tetraploid species of frogs. Diploid to tetraploid introgression is facilitated through triploid hybrids that are more viable than diploid hybrids and produce unreduced triploid eggs.

BACKGROUND: The 5XFAD model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) bearing five familial mutations of Alzheimer's disease on human APP and PSEN1 transgenes shows deposits of amyloid-ß peptide (Aß) as early as 2 months, while deficits in long-term memory can be detected at 4 months using the highly sensitive olfactory-dependent tests that we previously reported. OBJECTIVE: Given that detecting early dysfunctions in AD prior to overt pathology is of major interest in the field, we sought to detect memory deficits at earlier stages of the disease in 3-month-old male 5XFAD mice. METHODS: To this end, we used the Helico Maze, a behavioral task that was recently developed and patented. This device allows deeper analysis of learning and subcategories of hippocampal-dependent long-term memory using olfactory cues. RESULTS: Eight male 5XFAD and 6 male wild-type (WT: C57Bl6 background) mice of 3 months of age were tested in the Helico Maze. The results demonstrated, for the first time, a starting deficit of pure reference long-term memory. Interestingly, memory impairment was clearly correlated with Aß deposits in the hippocampus. While we also found significant differences in astrogliosis between 5XFAD and WT mice, this was not correlated with memory abilities. CONCLUSION: Our results underline the efficiency of this new olfactory-dependent behavioral task, which is easy to use, with a small cohort of mice. Using the Helico Maze may open new avenues to validate the efficacy of treatments that target early events related to the amyloid-dependent pathway of the disease and AD progression.

Background and Aim: Milk is a food of high nutritional value, which occupies an undeniable place in the human food ration, but is an ideal medium for microbial growth. This study aims to assess the hygienic quality of local raw and fermented milk from the Liptako-Gourma region in Niger. Materials and Methods: We performed physical and bacteriological analyses on 330 samples of bovine milk from local breeds, including 110 individual milk samples (per cow), 110 fermented milk samples, and 110 blended milk samples. The microbiological parameters were determined using standard methods. Results: The physical analysis revealed temperatures during sample collection for all milk types between 35.2°C and 37.8°C. The average pH of fermented milk varied between 3.16 and 4.92 and those of individual and blended raw milks between 5.42 and 6.98. The titratable acidity varied from 15° to 18.1°D for raw milk and between 59° and 122°D for fermented milk. The average density of individual and blended milks ranged between 1.028 and 1.035. Regionally, milk samples from Tillaberi had a significantly higher aerobic mesophilic germ (GAM) load (7.42 ± 0.53 × 107 Colony-forming unit/mL; p = 0.0025) compared to the Dosso and Niamey regions. The prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella spp. were 86.36%, 12.73%, and 20.91%, respectively, in fermented milk. Phenotypic identification pointed toward three genera: E. coli (30.76% ± 0.25%), S. aureus (20.58% ± 0.14%), and Salmonella spp. (2.74 ± 0.04%). Conclusion: The present data suggest that milk samples collected from three regions in Liptako-Gourma had low quality; further, some of the bacteria identified (E. coli, S. aureus, and Salmonella spp.) could be potential foodborne pathogens.

Detecting occupied sites of rare species, and estimating the probability that all occupied sites are known within a given area, are desired outcomes for many ecological or conservation projects. Examples include managing all occupied sites of a threatened species or eradicating an emerging invader. Occupied sites may remain undetected because (1) sites where the species potentially occurs had not been searched, and (2) the species could have been overlooked in the searched sites. For rare species, available data are typically scant, making it difficult to predict sites where the species probably occurs or to estimate detection probability in the searched sites. Using the critically endangered Rose's mountain toadlet (Capensibufo rosei), known from only two localities, we outline an iterative process aimed at estimating the probability that any unknown occupied sites remain and maximizing the chance of finding them. This includes fitting a species distribution model to guide sampling effort, testing model accuracy and sampling efficacy using the occurrence of more common proxy species, and estimating detection probability using sites of known presence. The final estimate of the probability that all occupied sites were found incorporates the uncertainties of uneven distribution, relative area searched, and detection probability. Our results show that very few occupied sites of C. rosei are likely to remain undetected. We also show that the probability of an undetected occupied site remaining will always be high for large unsearched areas of potential occurrence, but can be low for smaller areas intended for targeted management interventions. Our approach is especially useful for assessing uncertainty in species occurrences, planning the required search effort needed to reduce probability of unknown occurrence to desired levels, and identifying priority areas for further searches or management interventions.

Purpose: Intentional or accidental exposure of relatively large as well as localized areas of the skin to ionizing radiation can lead to severe damage of many of its cellular components and cutaneous radiation syndrome. Patients can be treated with an invasive surgical procedure coupled with autologous cell therapy. However, this approach remains perfectible, especially for muscle repair. Indeed, a severe underlying muscle defect persists, in particular because of the damage to the satellite cells which ensure muscle regeneration. To overcome these shortcomings, a solution could be to develop new therapeutic strategies based on pharmacological treatments to improve post-irradiation muscle regeneration. In this study, we focus on the Hedgehog signaling pathway as a target, due to its involvement in myogenesis.Materials and methods: To evaluate the benefit of the pro-myogenic Hedgehog signaling pathway modulation, recombinant Sonic Hedgehog (rShh; agonist) or Cyclopamine (antagonist) were used in a stable cell line of mouse C2C12 myoblasts exposed to radiation (X-rays; 5 Gy). Our in vitro studies were carried out under either proliferation or differentiation conditions. Proliferation, migration, survival (apoptosis) and expression of myogenic genes/proteins were evaluated.Results: A high dose of radiation was shown to exert a serious negative impact in our in vitro model of mouse muscle progenitors after irradiation in proliferation or differentiation conditions. Interestingly, Hh pathway stimulation by rShh promotes the proliferation of myoblasts and their survival while its blockade by Cyclopamine significantly increases cell differentiation toward mature myotubes.Conclusion: These data suggest that, after irradiation, the sequence of activation and inhibition of the Hh pathway could allow rescue and proliferation of satellite cells, followed by their differentiation to regenerate new fibers. On the basis of these encouraging in vitro results, the second phase of our study will involve the in vivo validation of this treatment in a new murine model of ultra-localized muscle irradiation.

Different memory systems operate in parallel to support behaviour. To evaluate procedural and reference subcategories of long-term memory as early as possible in the mouse, the Helico Maze (HM) was developed. BALB/c AnNCrl (BALB), C57BL/6JRj (C57) and DBA/2 JRj (DBA) mice were trained on this new maze. The three strains learned how to use the HM (procedural memory), and they then learned and remembered four odour-reward associations (reference memory). The three strains differed in the number of correct responses. BALB mice showed better performance than C57 and DBA mice. The results of the first block of each session revealed that only the BALB and C57 mice remembered the odour-reward associations. DBA mice needed to relearn the associations each day. With this new apparatus, the number of olfactory cue-reward associations was increased from 2 to 4 in comparison to a previous olfactory tubing maze. Consequently, a supplementary effort of memory was required, and the chance level was decreased from 50 % to 25 %. Thus, in several important respects, the HM can be considered to measure the hippocampus-dependent behaviour of the mouse, allowing to study, as early as possible in young mice, the different subcategories of long-term memory, such as those observed in humans.

Nowadays, ionizing radiations have numerous applications, especially in medicine for diagnosis and therapy. Pharmacological radioprotection aims at increasing detoxification of free radicals. Radiomitigation aims at improving survival and proliferation of damaged cells. Both strategies are essential research area, as non-contained radiation can lead to harmful effects. Some advances allowing the comprehension of normal tissue injury mechanisms, and the discovery of related predictive biomarkers, have led to developing several highly promising radioprotector or radiomitigator drugs. Next to these drugs, a growing interest does exist for biotherapy in this field, including gene therapy and cell therapy through mesenchymal stem cells. In this review article, we provide an overview of the management of radiation damages to healthy tissues via gene or cell therapy in the context of radiotherapy. The early management aims at preventing the occurrence of these damages before exposure or just after exposure. The late management offers promises in the reversion of constituted late damages following irradiation.

Vachellia karroo (formerly Acacia karroo) is a wide-spread legume species indigenous to southern Africa. Little is known regarding the identity or diversity of rhizobia that associate with this plant in its native range in South Africa. The aims of this study were therefore: (i) to gather a collection of rhizobia associated with V. karroo from a wide range of geographic locations and biomes; (ii) to identify the isolates and infer their evolutionary relationships with known rhizobia; (iii) to confirm their nodulation abilities by using them in inoculation assays to induce nodules under glasshouse conditions. To achieve these aims, soil samples were collected from 28 locations in seven biomes throughout South Africa, which were then used to grow V. karroo seedlings under nitrogen-free conditions. The resulting 88 bacterial isolates were identified to genus-level using 16S rRNA sequence analysis and to putative species-level using recA-based phylogenetic analyses. Our results showed that the rhizobial isolates represented members of several genera of Alphaproteobacteria (Bradyrhizobium, Ensifer, Mesorhizobium, and Rhizobium), as well as Paraburkholderia from the Betaproteobacteria. Our study therefore greatly increases the known number of Paraburkholderia isolates which can associate with this southern African mimosoid host. We also show for the first time that members of this genus can associate with legumes, not only in the Fynbos biome, but also in the Albany Thicket and Succulent Karoo biomes. Twenty-six putative species were delineated among the 88 isolates, many of which appeared to be new to Science with other likely being conspecific or closely related to E. alkalisoli, M. abyssinicae, M. shonense, and P. tropica. We encountered only a single isolate of Bradyrhizobium, which is in contrast to the dominant association of this genus with Australian Acacia. V. karroo also associates with diverse genera in the Grassland biome where it is quite invasive and involved in bush encroachment. Our findings therefore suggest that V. karroo is a promiscuous host capable of forming effective nodules with both alpha- and beta-rhizobia, which could be a driving force behind the ecological success of this tree species.

Objective: The point prevalence survey is a validated tool for measuring the quality of prescribing in the hospital setting. The objectives were to estimate the prevalence of hospital acquired infections, to assess the antimicrobial agent prescribed and determine if prescribers followed existing evidence-based antimicrobial policies subsequent to diagnosis of infection in patients. Design and Methodology: Day-of-survey records of patients in the intensive care unit and medical/surgical wards were examined at the institution, retrospectively. The extracted clinical data were recorded on the standardized data collection instruments (hospital, ward and patient forms) and analysed. Results: Of the 130 patients surveyed, 30 had an infection which occurred within 48 hours of admission. The most commonly reported infection type was urinary tract infections, evident in 9 (30.0%) patients, caused by Escherichia coli in 7 patients and Klebsiella pneumonia in 2 patients. Out of the 30 patients, 10 (33.3%) were awaiting laboratory reports at the time of the survey. Resistance was noted for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, both of which were seen in 2 patients and Enterococcus spp. in 1 patient. The antimicrobial agent selected to treat these microorganisms should have been queried. Conclusions: Results of this survey imply that public health surveillance and prevention activities should be implemented to address appropriate treatment of hospital acquired infections. Recommendations to minimize the risk of resistance include: improving the availability of alcohol-based hand rub, the provision of single room and isolation capacity, antimicrobial guidelines for treatment of infection, judicious prescribing and proper surveillance of prescribed antimicrobials.

Stem cells are considered as promising tools to repair diverse tissue injuries. Among the different stem cell types, the "olfactory ectomesenchymal stem cells" (OE-MSCs) located in the adult olfactory mucosa stand as one of the best candidates. Here, we evaluated if OE-MSC grafts could decrease memory impairments due to ischemic injury. OE-MSCs were collected from syngeneic F344 rats. After a two-step global cerebral ischemia, inducing hippocampal lesions, learning abilities were evaluated using an olfactory associative discrimination task. Cells were grafted into the hippocampus 5 weeks after injury and animal's learning abilities reassessed. Rats were then sacrificed and the brains collected for immunohistochemical analyses. We observed significant impairments in learning and memory abilities following ischemia. However, 4 weeks after OE-MSC grafts, animals displayed learning and memory performances similar to those of controls, while sham rats did not improve them. Immunohistochemical analyses revealed that grafts promoted neuroblast and glial cell proliferation, which could permit to restore cognitive functions. These results demonstrated, for the first time, that syngeneic transplantations of OE-MSCs in rats can restore cognitive abilities impaired after brain injuries and provide support for the development of clinical studies based on grafts of OE-MSCs in amnesic patients following brain injuries.

Radiation-induced mucositis is a common toxicity, especially in patients with head and neck cancers. Despite recent technological advances in radiation therapy, such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy, radiation-induced mucositis is still causing treatment disruptions, negatively affecting patients' long and short term quality of life, and impacting medical resources use with economic consequences. The objective of this article was to review the latest updates in the management of radiation-induced mucositis, with a focus on pharmaceutical strategies for the prevention or treatment of mucositis. Although numerous studies analysing the prevention and management of oral radiation-induced mucositis have been conducted, there are still few reliable data to guide daily clinical practice. Furthermore, most of the tested drugs have shown no (anti-inflammatory cytokine, growth factors) or limited (palifermin) effect. Therapies for acute oral mucositis are predominantly focused on improving oral hygiene and providing symptoms control. Although low-level laser therapy proved efficient in preventing radiation-induced oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer, this intervention requires equipment and trained medical staff, and is therefore insufficiently developed in clinical routine. New effective pharmacological agents able to prevent or reverse radio-induced mucositis are required.

Background: Submicroscopic malaria infections contribute to malaria transmission. Describing the extent of the parasite reservoir is of importance. In people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the frequency of subpatent malaria infections is rarely reported. The aim of the present study was to determine the frequency of submicroscopic infections in people living with HIV in Gabon and its relationship with cotrimoxazole (CTX) use. Methods: A survey was conducted in two health care centres in rural areas (Koulamoutou and Oyem) and three in urban areas (Libreville) of Gabon from March 2015 to June 2016. Blood samples were collected from consenting people living with HIV with a negative blood smear. Information on CTX and antiretroviral therapy intake was recorded from the medical file of the patient and through an interview. For molecular analysis, the Plasmodium small subunit ribosomal RNA gene was amplified by nested polymerase chain reaction. Results: Submicroscopic infections were detected in 10.1% (n=12/119) of the people living with HIV, more frequently in those residing in rural areas (15.1%) compared with urban areas (2.1%) (p<0.01). The proportion of anaemic patients was 1.74-fold more frequent in malaria-infected patients, although not statistically significant. Submicroscopic infections frequency did not vary according to CTX intake (p=0.6). Conclusions: The present pilot study highlights a non-negligible frequency of submicroscopic malaria infections in people living with HIV from rural areas, but no relationship with CTX intake was found.

BACKGROUND: Stem cell-based therapies are an attractive option to promote regeneration and repair defective tissues and organs. Thanks to their multipotency, high proliferation rate and the lack of major ethical limitations, "olfactory ecto-mesenchymal stem cells" (OE-MSCs) have been described as a promising candidate to treat a variety of damaged tissues. Easily accessible in the nasal cavity of most mammals, these cells are highly suitable for autologous cell-based therapies and do not face issues associated with other stem cells. However, their clinical use in humans and animals is limited due to a lack of preclinical studies on autologous transplantation and because no well-established methods currently exist to cultivate these cells. Here we evaluated the feasibility of collecting, purifying and amplifying OE-MSCs from different mammalian genera with the goal of promoting their interest in veterinary regenerative medicine. Biopsies of olfactory mucosa from eight mammalian genera (mouse, rat, rabbit, sheep, dog, horse, gray mouse lemur and macaque) were collected, using techniques derived from those previously used in humans and rats. The possibility of amplifying these cells and their stemness features and differentiation capability were then evaluated. RESULTS: Biopsies were successfully performed on olfactory mucosa without requiring the sacrifice of the donor animal, except mice. Cell populations were rapidly generated from olfactory mucosa explants. These cells displayed similar key features of their human counterparts: a fibroblastic morphology, a robust expression of nestin, an ability to form spheres and similar expression of surface markers (CD44, CD73). Moreover, most of them also exhibited high proliferation rates and clonogenicity with genus-specific properties. Finally, OE-MSCs also showed the ability to differentiate into mesodermal lineages. CONCLUSIONS: This article describes for the first time how millions of OE-MSCs can be quickly and easily obtained from different mammalian genera through protocols that are well-suited for autologous transplantations. Moreover, their multipotency makes them relevant to evaluate therapeutic application in a wide variety of tissue injury models. This study paves the way for the development of new fundamental and clinical studies based on OE-MSCs transplantation and suggests their interest in veterinary medicine.

The transplantation of olfactory ecto-mesenchymal stem cells (OEMSCs) could be a helpful therapeutic strategy for spinal cord repair. Using an acute rat model of high cervical contusion that provokes a persistent hemidiaphragmatic and foreleg paralysis, we evaluated the therapeutic effect of a delayed syngeneic transplantation (two days post-contusion) of OEMSCs within the injured spinal cord. Respiratory function was assessed using diaphragmatic electromyography and neuroelectrophysiological recordings of phrenic nerves (innervating the diaphragm). Locomotor function was evaluated using the ladder-walking locomotor test. Cellular reorganization in the injured area was also studied using immunohistochemical and microscopic techniques. We report a substantial improvement in breathing movements, in activities of the ipsilateral phrenic nerve and ipsilateral diaphragm, and also in locomotor abilities four months post-transplantation with nasal OEMSCs. Moreover, in the grafted spinal cord, axonal disorganization and inflammation were reduced. Some grafted stem cells adopted a neuronal phenotype, and axonal sparing was observed in the injury site. The therapeutic effect on the supraspinal command is presumably because of both neuronal replacements and beneficial paracrine effects on the injury area. Our study provides evidence that nasal OEMSCs could be a first step in clinical application, particularly in patients with reduced breathing/locomotor movements.

Age-specific survival and reproduction are closely linked to fitness and therefore subject to strong selection that typically limits their variability within species. Furthermore, adult survival rate in vertebrate populations is typically less variable over time than other life-history traits, such as fecundity or recruitment. Hence, adult survival is often conserved within a population over time, compared to the variation in survival found across taxa. In stark contrast to this general pattern, we report evidence of extreme short-term variation of adult survival in Rose's mountain toadlet (Capensibufo rosei), which is apparently climate induced. Over 7 years, annual survival rate varied between 0.04 and 0.92, and 94% of this variation was explained by variation in breeding-season rainfall. Preliminary results suggest that this variation reflects adaptive life-history plasticity to a degree thus far unrecorded for any vertebrate, rather than direct rainfall-induced mortality. In wet years, these toads appeared to achieve increased reproduction at the expense of their own survival, whereas in dry years, their survival increased at the expense of reproduction. Such environmentally induced plasticity may reflect a diversity of life-history strategies not previously appreciated among vertebrates.

Metagenomics studies have revolutionized the field of biology by revealing the presence of many previously unisolated and uncultured micro-organisms. However, one of the main problems encountered in metagenomic studies is the high percentage of sequences that cannot be assigned taxonomically using commonly used similarity-based approaches (e.g. BLAST or HMM). These unassigned sequences are allegorically called « dark matter ¼ in the metagenomic literature and are often referred to as being derived from new or unknown organisms. Here, based on published and original metagenomic datasets coming from virus-like particle enriched samples, we present and quantify the improvement of viral taxonomic assignment that is achievable with a new similarity-based approach. Indeed, prior to any use of similarity based taxonomic assignment methods, we propose assembling contigs from short reads as is currently routinely done in metagenomic studies, but then to further map unassembled reads to the assembled contigs. This additional mapping step increases significantly the proportions of taxonomically assignable sequence reads from a variety -plant, insect and environmental (estuary, lakes, soil, feces) - of virome studies.

The question whether a reirradiation is possible, with either curative of palliative intent, is a frequent issue and a true therapeutic challenge, in particular for a critical organ sensitive to cumulative dose, such as the spinal cord. Preclinical experimental data, based on debatable models that are hardly transferable to patients, suggest that there is a possibility of reirradiation, beyond the classical threshold for dose constraints, taking into account the "time-dose factor". Although the underlying biological mechanisms are however uncertain, scarce clinical data seem to confirm that the tolerance of spinal cord to reirradiation does exist, provided that a particular attention to total dose is given. In the context where modern stereotactic irradiation facilities expand therapeutic perspectives, we review the literature on possibilities of reirradiation, through the example of spinal cord reirradiation.
