Oxidative stress is one of the main causes of loss of sperm function during chilled storage. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of a fructose-based extender, which was supplemented with catalase or uric acid, on the motility, viability, morphological integrity, and lipid peroxidation (LPO) of Colossoma macropomum spermatozoa. Sperm was diluted in extenders containing catalase (0; 0.1; 0.8; and 1.5 kU/L) or uric acid (0; 0.25; 0.5; and 1.0 mmol/L) and then stored at 4.3 ± 0.6°C for 96 hours. The chilling storage time had more significant and pronounced effects on practically all the measured sperm quality parameters than the different concentrations of both antioxidants added to the extenders. This was true for sperm motility, motility duration, sperm viability, and the percentage of normal spermatozoa. In fact, for all these parameters, values were higher in the extenders supplemented with catalase or uric acid, than those not supplemented with these antioxidants, especially after 96 hours. The LPO process showed an antioxidant-dependent response. In catalase-supplemented extenders thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels increased gradually and significantly with time, but remained stable during the 96 hours of chilled storage in all samples in which uric acid was added. Despite this, TBARS levels were lower in the extenders supplemented with both catalase and uric acid than in those not having these antioxidants. Inverse correlations were found between sperm motility and the damage in sperm flagella. Our findings suggest that the supplementation of an extender with catalase or uric acid is beneficial and protects fish sperm membranes from damage caused by oxidative stress during low-temperature storage. The extenders containing 0.1 kU/L of catalase and 0.25 mmol/L of uric acid provided effective antioxidant protection for the spermatozoa of this important Amazonian fish.

Li-air batteries attract significant attention due to their highest theoretical energy density among all existing energy storage technologies. Currently, challenges related to extending lifetime and long-term stability limit their practical application. To overcome these issues and enhance the total capacity of Li-air batteries, this study introduces an innovative approach with NiO/ZrO2 catalysts. Operando advanced chemical imaging with micrometer spatial resolution unveils that NiO/ZrO2 catalysts substantially change the kinetics of crystalline lithium hydroxide (LiOH) formation and facilitate its rapid decomposition with heterogeneous distribution. Moreover, ex situ combined neutron and X-ray computed tomography (CT) analysis, provide evidence of distinct lithium phases homogeneously distributed in the presence of NiO/ZrO2 . These findings underscore the material's superior physico-chemical and electronic properties, with more efficient oxygen diffusion and indications of lower obstruction to its active sites, avoiding clogging in the active electrode, a common cause of capacity loss. Electrochemical tests conducted at high current density demonstrated a significant kinetic enhancement of the oxygen reduction and evolution reactions, resulting in improved charge and discharge processes with low overpotential. This pioneering approach using NiO/ZrO2 catalysts represents a step toward on developing the full potential of Li-air batteries as high-energy-density energy storage systems.

Increases in temperature can affect the reproduction of fish by decreasing the quality of gametes for fertilization. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the in vivo effect of temperature on the production and sperm quality of Colossoma macropomum, which is an economically relevant species for Brazil, and other countries. Broodstock were exposed for 10 days at temperatures of 29 °C (n = 4) and 35 °C (n = 4). After exposure, semen was collected and sperm quality was evaluated for kinetic, biochemical, morphological parameters, membrane integrity, and oxygen consumption. The sperm quality of males of specimens of C. macropomum exposed in vivo to the higher temperature was compromised and showed a difference in all the analyses (P < 0.05). Sperm showed decreased motility (51.9 ± 11.6 s) compared to the control (61.3 ± 5.5 s); curvilinear (CLV), straight line (SLV), and average path (APV) velocities decreased, and straightness (STR) and beat cross frequency (BCF) increased; oxygen consumption decreased (32.8 ± 3.4 pmol. (s.ml)-1, picomol per second per ml) compared to the control (46.6 ± 3.5 pmol. (s.ml)-1); and the activity of catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzymes increased and decreased, respectively, in sperm from fish exposed to high temperatures. Furthermore, an increase in non-viable sperm with damaged membranes and sperm with altered morphology was observed. The observed alterations indicate that C. macropomum confined in environments with high temperatures possibly produces more sperm that are unviable for the fertilization process.

This systematic review provides an overview of the history and current status of cryopreservation of fish sperm and a detailed evaluation of cryoprotocols using powdered milk. A literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO databases. Twenty-nine articles were selected after excluding duplicate articles or articles that did not meet the eligibility criteria. Rhamdia quelen and Danio rerio were the most studied species. Slow freezing method, dry-shipper, freezing rate of -35.6°C/min, thawing in water bath (35.93°C ± 10°C), and 0.25 and 0.5 mL plastic straws were the main approaches evaluated. Methanol was the most used permeable cryoprotectant in combination with powdered milk, yielding the best results at 10% concentration. Motility rate was the main analysis performed after cryopreservation in virtually all studies, being subjectively evaluated by most authors. Powdered milk at 15% promoted the best results in the analyzed studies. For motility rate, the gains with the addition of powdered milk were observed in the orders Perciformes (Oreochromis mossambicus), Siluriformes (Pangasius pangasius, Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, and Pseudoplatystoma mataense), and Cypriniformes (Tor soro and Barbonymus gonionotus). For fertilization, gains were observed in the order Siluriformes (P. mataense) and Cypriniformes (T. soro). Sperm viability gains were observed in the orders Siluriformes (P. pangasius), Characiformes (Piaractus brachypomus), and Cypriniformes (B. gonionotus). The scientific evidence we present in this study may contribute and serve as a starting point for new and more refined studies to be developed in the field.

RESUMO

This is the first report of Antiteuchus tripterus (Fabricius, 1787) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) damaging Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze, 1898 (Pinales: Araucariaceae) plants in Brazil. This bug, native to the neotropical region, damaged this plant on fragments of mixed rain forest in Bueno Brandão, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Araucaria angustifolia, native and with ecological and economic values, was widely used in the lumber market and, therefore, threatened with extinction. Nymphs and adults of A. tripterus were observed in March and April with a population reduction until June 2022. The bioecology and damage caused by A. tripterus on A. angustifolia are not known.

Tegumentary (TL) and visceral (VL) leishmaniasis are neglected zoonotic diseases in Brazil, caused by different parasites and transmitted by various vector species. This study investigated and compared spatio-temporal patterns of TL and VL from 2007 to 2020 in the state of Bahia, Brazil, and their correlations with extrinsic factors. The results showed that the total number of cases of both TL and VL were decreasing. The number of municipalities with reported cases reduced for TL over time but remained almost unchanged for VL. There were few municipalities with reported both diseases. Statistical analysis showed that local TL incidence was associated positively with natural forest. Local VL incidence was associated positively with Cerrado (Brazilian savannah) vegetation. This study identified different patterns of occurrence of VL and TL and the risk areas that could be prioritized for epidemiological surveillance.

This work aimed to evaluate the impacts caused by extreme frost events in an ecological restoration area. We grouped the species in three ways: (1) type of trichome coverage; (2) shape of the seedling crown; and (3) functional groups according to the degree of damage caused by frost. The variables of the restored area and species characteristics were selected to be subjected to linear generalization analysis models (GLMs). A total of 104 individuals from seven species were sampled. The most affected species were Guazuma ulmifolia Lam. (98% of leaves affected), followed by Cecropia pachystachia Trécul and Hymenea courbaril L. (both 97%), Inga vera Willd. (84%), and Senegalia polyphylla (DC.) Britton & Rose with 75%. Tapirira guianensis Aubl. was considered an intermediate species, with 62% of the crown affected. Only Solanum granulosoleprosum Dunal was classified as slightly affected, with only 1.5% of leaves affected. With the GLM analysis, it was verified that the interaction between the variables of leaf thickness (Χ² = 37.1, df = 1, p < 0.001), trichome coverage (Χ² = 650.5, df = 2, p < 0.001), and leaf structure culture (Χ² = 54.0, df = 2, p < 0.001) resulted in a model with high predictive power (AIC = 927,244, BIC = 940,735, Χ² = 6947, R² = 0.74, p < 0.001). Frost-affected crown cover was best explained by the interaction between the three functional attributes (74%). We found that there is a tendency for thicker leaves completely covered in trichomes to be less affected by the impact of frost and that the coverage of the affected crown was greatly influenced by the coverage of trichomes. Seedlings with leaves completely covered in trichomes, thicker leaves, and a funneled or more open crown structure are those that are most likely to resist frost events. The success of ecological restoration in areas susceptible to extreme events such as frost can be predicted based on the functional attributes of the chosen species. This can contribute to a better selection of species to be used to restore degraded areas.

Objective: To analyze the use of health services by quilombola elderly people. Methods: This is a cross-sectional and household-based study conducted in 11 quilombola communities, with 236 elderly people ≥60 years old. Statistical differences were found in the estimates of indicators of the use of health services according to gender and age group. Pearson's Chi-square or Fisher's Exact tests were performed. Differences were considered statistically significant when p<0.05. Results: Most of the elderly people did not have a health insurance plan, seeking mainly public hospital/outpatient unit. The last medical consultation for 80.3% of the participants was performed in the 12 months prior to the interviews, with fewer consultations for men (p= 0.027). There was a low hospitalization rate in the last year and a low demand for health services in the last two weeks. Conclusion: Quilombola women and long-lived elderly people use health services more and, in general, the elderly citizens depend on SUS to exercise their right to health. The public hospital/outpatient unit was the most used service, and PHCU was little sought (AU).


Objetivo: Analisar a utilização de serviços de saúde por idosos quilombolas. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo transversal, de base domiciliar, realizado em 11 comunidades quilombolas, com 236 idosos ≥60 anos. Verificou-se diferenças estatísticas nas estimativas dos indicadores de uso de serviços de saúde segundo sexo e faixa etária. Realizaram-se testes de Qui-quadrado de Pearson ou Exato de Fisher. As diferenças foram consideradas estatisticamente significantes quando p<0,05. Resultados: A maioria dos idosos não possuía plano de saúde, buscando, principalmente, hospital/ambulatório público. A última consulta médica de 80,3% dos participantes foi realizada nos 12 meses anteriores às entrevistas, com número menor de consulta para os homens (p= 0,027). Houve baixa internação hospitalar no último ano e procura de algum serviço de saúde nas duas últimas semanas. Conclusão: As mulheres quilombolas e os idosos mais velhos utilizam mais os serviços de saúde e, no geral, os idosos dependem do SUS para exercer o seu direito à saúde. O hospital/ambulatório público foi o serviço mais utilizado, e a UBS pouco procurada (AU).

Evidence suggests that guard cells have higher rate of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPc)-mediated dark CO2 assimilation than mesophyll cells. However, it is unknown which metabolic pathways are activated following dark CO2 assimilation in guard cells. Furthermore, it remains unclear how the metabolic fluxes throughout the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and associated pathways are regulated in illuminated guard cells. Here we carried out a13C-HCO3 labelling experiment in tobacco guard cells harvested under continuous dark or during the dark-to-light transition to elucidate principles of metabolic dynamics downstream of CO2 assimilation. Most metabolic changes were similar between dark-exposed and illuminated guard cells. However, illumination altered the metabolic network structure of guard cells and increased the 13C-enrichment in sugars and metabolites associated to the TCA cycle. Sucrose was labelled in the dark, but light exposure increased the 13C-labelling and leads to more drastic reductions in the content of this metabolite. Fumarate was strongly labelled under both dark and light conditions, while illumination increased the 13C-enrichment in pyruvate, succinate and glutamate. Only one 13C was incorporated into malate and citrate in either dark or light conditions. Our results indicate that several metabolic pathways are redirected following PEPc-mediated CO2 assimilation in the dark, including gluconeogenesis and the TCA cycle. We further showed that the PEPc-mediated CO2 assimilation provides carbons for gluconeogenesis, the TCA cycle and glutamate synthesis and that previously stored malate and citrate are used to underpin the specific metabolic requirements of illuminated guard cells.

Water deficit (WD) combined with high temperature (HT) is the major factor limiting agriculture worldwide, and it is predicted to become worse according to the current climate change scenario. It is thus important to understand how current cultivated crops respond to these stress conditions. Here we investigated how four soybean cultivars respond to WD and HT isolated or in combination at metabolic, physiological, and anatomical levels. The WD + HT increased the level of stress in soybean plants when compared to plants under well-watered (WW), WD, or HT conditions. WD + HT exacerbates the increases in ascorbate peroxidase activity, which was associated with the greater photosynthetic rate in two cultivars under WD + HT. The metabolic responses to WD + HT diverge substantially from plants under WW, WD, or HT conditions. Myo-inositol and maltose were identified as WD + HT biomarkers and were connected to subnetworks composed of catalase, amino acids, and both root and leaf osmotic potentials. Correlation-based network analyses highlight that the network heterogeneity increased and a higher integration among metabolic, physiological, and morphological nodes is observed under stress conditions. Beyond unveiling biochemical and metabolic WD + HT biomarkers, our results collectively highlight that the mechanisms behind the acclimation to WD + HT cannot be understood by investigating WD or HT stress separately.

BACKGROUND: Turner syndrome (TS) is a rare condition associated with a completely or partially missing X chromosome that affects 1 in 2500 girls. TS increases the risk of autoimmune diseases, including Graves' disease (GD). Moyamoya disease is a rare cerebral arteriopathy of unknown etiology characterized by progressive bilateral stenosis of the internal carotid artery and its branches. Both TS and GD have been associated with Moyamoya. Type 2 spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA2) is an autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia caused by a CAG repeat expansion in ATXN2. We present the first case of Moyamoya syndrome in a patient with a previous diagnosis of TS and GD who tested positive for SCA2 and had imaging findings compatible with an overlap of SCA2 and Moyamoya. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old woman presented with mild gait imbalance for 2 years. Her family history was positive for type 2 spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA2). She had been diagnosed with Turner Syndrome (45,X) and Graves disease three years before. Brain MRI revealed bilateral frontal and parietal cystic encephalomalacia in watershed zones, atrophy of pons, middle cerebellar peduncles and cerebellum. MR angiography showed progressive stenosis of both internal carotid arteries with lenticulostriate collaterals, suggestive of Moya-Moya disease. Molecular analysis confirmed the diagnosis of SCA2. CONCLUSIONS: With increased availability of tools for genetic diagnosis, physicians need to be aware of the possibility of a single patient presenting two or more rare diseases. This report underscores the modern dilemmas created by increasingly accurate imaging techniques and available and extensive genetic testing.

The impact of social isolation in the pandemic context on elderly Brazilian mental health is little known, especially about the occurrence of depressive symptoms. In this study, we evaluated elderly people undergoing social isolation in order to identify factors associated with depression and which of these are more important to characterize elderly Brazilians with depression. In a cross-sectional, exploratory, and analytical study of a quantitative nature, the mental profile of elderly individuals subjected to social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic period was used. A total of 450 participants was divided into normal and depressive groups, and a form covering sociodemographic data, opinions/perceptions about the pandemic, and a Reduced Geriatric Depression Scale was used to assess participants' mental health. To assess the statistical significance between the variables, chi-square test was applied, considering the p-value <0.05. The effect size was analyzed to identify the magnitude of the difference between groups. To identify the most important characteristics to define the groups Multilayer Perceptron algorithm were applied. We found that elderly people with a depressive profile are (in Multilayer Perceptron rank order) (1) showing signs of anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic, (2) of low education, (3) being divorced, (4) having more than one mental disorder, (5) reading, watching, or listening to information about COVID-19, and (6) being previously diagnosed with depression. In conclusion, elderly Brazilians in social isolation tend to develop depressive disorders during quarantine. Thus, we can consider that the pandemic requires effective and safe gerontological care and monitoring, especially with regard to mental health.

Introduction: There is scarce evidence on the efficacy of vasopressin as a vasopressor agent in pediatric catecholamine-refractory shock. The aim of this study is to describe hemodynamic changes during the first hours of administration vasopressin as rescue therapy in patients with catecholamine-refractory shock. Methods: This is a retrospective study including children from 1 month to 18 years admitted to the PICU who received vasopressin as rescue therapy for catecholamine-refractory shock (noradrenalin ≥1µg/ kg/min and variable doses of other inotropic / vasopressor agents). For analysis purposes, blood pressure means and modified vasoactive scores were calculated at two time periods: 2 hours prior to vasopressin therapy (T-2) and within the first 10 hours of vasopressin therapy (T10). Results: Using the paired Students' t test, mean blood pressure and vasoactive-inotropic scores modified by Wernovsky in the 2 hours before the use of vasopressin (T-2) were compared with the means of the first 10 hours of vasopressin administration (T10). The sample consisted of 16 patients. Median initial dose of vasopressin was 0.0005U/kg/min (interquartile range 0.00024-0.00168). Mean blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure increased with the use of vasopressin (p=0.0267 and p=0.0194, respectively). There was no reduction in vasoactive-inotropic score or increased diuresis. Conclusion: The administration of vasopressin increased blood pressure in this sample but did not promote a reduction in catecholamine scores nor increased diuresis.


Introdução: Há escassez de evidências sobre a eficácia da vasopressina como agente vasopressor no choque refratário à catecolamina em crianças. O objetivo foi descrever as alterações hemodinâmicas que ocorrem nas primeiras horas de administração da vasopressina, como terapia de resgate em pacientes com choque refratário à catecolamina. Métodos: Estudo retrospectivo. Foram incluídas crianças de 1 mês a 18 anos internadas na UTIP que receberam vasopressina como terapia de resgate para choque refratário à catecolamina (noradrenalina ≥1µg/kg/min e doses variáveis de outros inotrópicos /vasopressores). Para fins de análise, as medidas da pressão arterial e os escores vasoativos modificados foram calculados em dois períodos: nas 2 horas anteriores ao início da terapia com vasopressina (T-2) e nas primeiras 10 horas da terapia com vasopressina (T10). Resultados: Utilizando o teste t de Student pareado, a pressão arterial média e o escore vasoativo-inotrópico modificado por Wernovsky nas 2 horas anteriores ao uso de vasopressina (T-2) foram comparados com as médias dessas variáveis durante as primeiras 10 horas de administração de vasopressina (T10). A amostra foi composta por 16 pacientes. A dose mediana inicial de vasopressina foi de 0,0005U/kg/min (intervalo interquartil 0,00024-0,00168). A pressão arterial média e a pressão arterial diastólica aumentaram com o uso de vasopressina (p=0,0267 e p=0,0194, respectivamente). Não houve redução no escore vasoativo-inotrópico ou aumento na diurese. Conclusão: A administração de vasopressina aumentou a pressão arterial nesta amostra, mas não teve efeitos na redução dos escores de catecolaminas ou no aumento da diurese.

13 C-Metabolic flux analysis (13 C-MFA) has greatly contributed to our understanding of plant metabolic regulation. However, the generation of detailed in vivo flux maps remains a major challenge. Flux investigations based on nuclear magnetic resonance have resolved small networks with high accuracy. Mass spectrometry (MS) approaches have broader potential, but have hitherto been limited in their power to deduce flux information due to lack of atomic level position information. Herein we established a gas chromatography (GC) coupled to MS-based approach that provides 13 C-positional labelling information in glucose, malate and glutamate (Glu). A map of electron impact (EI)-mediated MS fragmentation was created and validated by 13 C-positionally labelled references via GC-EI-MS and GC-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-MS technologies. The power of the approach was revealed by analysing previous 13 C-MFA data from leaves and guard cells, and 13 C-HCO3 labelling of guard cells harvested in the dark and after the dark-to-light transition. We demonstrated that the approach is applicable to established GC-EI-MS-based 13 C-MFA without the need for experimental adjustment, but will benefit in the future from paired analyses by the two GC-MS platforms. We identified specific glucose carbon atoms that are preferentially labelled by photosynthesis and gluconeogenesis, and provide an approach to investigate the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPc)-derived 13 C-incorporation into malate and Glu. Our results suggest that gluconeogenesis and the PEPc-mediated CO2 assimilation into malate are activated in a light-independent manner in guard cells. We further highlight that the fluxes from glycolysis and PEPc toward Glu are restricted by the mitochondrial thioredoxin system in illuminated leaves.

Anti-GAD ataxia is one of the most common forms of immune-mediated cerebellar ataxias. Many neurological syndromes have been reported in association with anti-GAD. Ophthalmoparesis has been described in stiff person syndrome. We report a case of anti-GAD ataxia presenting initially with isolated ophthalmoplegia and showing complete resolution after immunotherapy. A 26-year-old male patient presented with ophthalmoparesis characterized by tonic upwards deviation of the right eye. In the following month, he developed progressive ataxia with anti-GAD titers of 1972 UI/mL. After treatment with methylprednisolone and immunoglobulin, there was complete resolution of symptoms and anti-GAD titers decreased. This is the first report of isolated ophthalmoparesis due to tonic eye deviation associated with anti-GAD antibodies without stiff-person syndrome. Tonic eye deviation has been reported in SPS, possibly secondary to continuous discharge in gaze holding neurons in the brainstem (similar to what occurs in spinal motor neurons). With growing evidence for ocular abnormalitites in SPS, anti-GAD associated neurological syndromes should be included in the differential diagnosis of isolated ophthalmoplegia.

Headache is the most common neurological symptom in COVID-19, reported in 6.5 to 34% of patients. Few studies have analyzed its characteristics, and some of them included cases without laboratory confirmation or reported only critical patients. We aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics of COVID-19 associated headache in laboratory-confirmed cases. We conducted a retrospective evaluation of patients with COVID-19 and neurological symptoms. Patients who reported headache answered an interview about its clinical characteristics. Twenty-four patients with COVID-19 associated headache completed the interview. Mean age of patients was 53.8 (standard deviation-17.44), and 14 out of 24 (58.3%) were male. The majority (75%) had no previous history of headache. Fever was documented in 19 out of the 24 patients (79.1%). Headache was predominantly bifrontal or holocranial, in pressure, during hours, worsening with cough or physical activity. COVID-19 headache tends to appear in the first days of symptoms, be either frontal or holocranial and last for days. The quality of pain in pressure and the worsening with cough or physical activity were reported in most cases. We have not found any characteristic that could differentiate COVID-19 associated headache from other causes of headache, possibly because of its multifactorial mechanism.

Mercury is a severe environmental pollutant with neurotoxic effects, especially when exposed for long periods. Although there are several evidences regarding mercury toxicity, little is known about inorganic mercury (IHg) species and cerebellum, one of the main targets of mercury associated with the neurological symptomatology of mercurial poisoning. Besides that, the global proteomic profile assessment is a valuable tool to screen possible biomarkers and elucidate molecular targets of mercury neurotoxicity; however, the literature is still scarce. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of long-term exposure to IHg in adult rats' cerebellum and explore the modulation of the cerebellar proteome associated with biochemical and functional outcomes, providing evidence, in a translational perspective, of new mercury toxicity targets and possible biomarkers. Fifty-four adult rats were exposed to 0.375 mg/kg of HgCl2 or distilled water for 45 days using intragastric gavage. Then, the motor functions were evaluated by rotarod and inclined plane. The cerebellum was collected to quantify mercury levels, to assess the antioxidant activity against peroxyl radicals (ACAPs), the lipid peroxidation (LPO), the proteomic profile, the cell death nature by cytotoxicity and apoptosis, and the Purkinje cells density. The IHg exposure increased mercury levels in the cerebellum, reducing ACAP and increasing LPO. The proteomic approach revealed a total 419 proteins with different statuses of regulation, associated with different biological processes, such as synaptic signaling, energy metabolism and nervous system development, e.g., all these molecular changes are associated with increased cytotoxicity and apoptosis, with a neurodegenerative pattern on Purkinje cells layer and poor motor coordination and balance. In conclusion, all these findings feature a neurodegenerative process triggered by IHg in the cerebellum that culminated into motor functions deficits, which are associated with several molecular features and may be related to the clinical outcomes of people exposed to the toxicant.

Resumo: Introdução: A participação social na prática de ações promotoras da saúde é uma das diretrizes do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). A partir disso, surge o letramento funcional em saúde (LFS) que se compreende como a capacidade do indivíduo de entender, interpretar e aplicar as informações escritas ou faladas sobre saúde. Nesse contexto, a extensão universitária torna-se uma estratégia que transmite informações sobre prevenção em saúde e permite o seu empoderamento pelos usuários. Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo relatar a experiência de um projeto de extensão que possibilita a interação de acadêmicos e usuários da atenção primária, a fim de estimular o LFS e avaliar a percepção dos usuários sobre as ações desenvolvidas pelos discentes. Método: As intervenções do projeto priorizavam temas e doenças prevalentes na população local e/ou que estão no calendário nacional de conscientização do Ministério da Saúde. No final das intervenções, realizaram-se dinâmicas que simularam situações reais, e alguns usuários foram convidados a participar delas e, partir disso, estimular o LFS. Ademais, a avaliação da percepção dos usuários sobre a participação dos discentes foi realizada por meio de uma entrevista, na qual se utilizou uma pergunta norteadora, e, em seguida, aplicou-se o método de análise do conteúdo de Bardin. Resultado: No decorrer da execução do projeto, foi perceptível que as intervenções tiveram rendimento satisfatório em relação aos conteúdos trabalhados, pois ocorreram inúmeros questionamentos e relatos dos usuários. Constatou-se que as práticas educativas foram muito construtivas no contexto da estimulação do LFS, pois proporcionaram a participação ativa dos indivíduos. Além disso, os relatos positivos dos usuários corroborou a percepção dos alunos quanto às ações. Justificativas como a carência de ações em educação em saúde, a falta de informação sobre o processo saúde-doença, a importância da prevenção e a troca de conhecimento foram abordadas pelos usuários. Conclusão: Por meio dos relatos dos usuários e pela experiência dos autores, conclui-se que as ações em educação em saúde desenvolvidas sempre buscando tornar os usuários protagonistas da própria saúde possibilitam a troca de saberes entre acadêmicos e comunidade, promovendo a multiplicação de conhecimento acerca dos temas abordados no projeto.


Abstract: Introduction: Social participation in the practice of health-promoting actions is one of the guidelines of the Unified Health System (SUS). From this comes Functional Health Literacy (LFS), which is understood as the individual's ability to understand, interpret and apply written or spoken information about health. In this context, the university community outreach program comes to represent a strategy that transmits information about health prevention and allows user empowerment. Objective: To report the experience of a community outreach project that works by enabling interaction between academics and primary care users in order to stimulate LFS and assess the users' views on the actions developed by students. Method: The project's interventions prioritized themes and diseases prevalent in the local population and/or feature in the Ministry of Health's national awareness calendar. At the end of the interventions, role plays were performed to simulate real life situations, where some users were invited to participate and, hence, stimulate LFS. Furthermore, the users' views on the students' participation were assessed through an interview using a guiding question followed by the application of Bardin's method of content analysis. Result: During the project, the interventions produced noticeably satisfactory results in relation to the content, as the users presented several questions and accounts of experiences. It was noteworthy how constructive the educational practices were in the context of LFS stimulation, as they provided for the active participation of individuals. In addition, the users' positive reports corroborated the students' perception of the actions. Users addressed justifications such as lack of actions in health education, lack of information about the health-disease process, the importance of prevention and exchange of knowledge. Conclusion: Through the users' accounts and the authors' experience, the conclusion can be drawn that health education actions always developed to place the user as the protagonist of their own health enable an exchange of knowledge between academics and the community, promoting the multiplication of knowledge about the topics covered in the project.

Lead (Pb) is an environmental and occupational neurotoxicant after long-term exposure. This study aimed to investigate the effects of systemic Pb exposure in rats from adolescence to adulthood, evaluating molecular, morphologic and functional aspects of hippocampus. For this, male Wistar rats were exposed to 50 mg/kg of Pb acetate or distilled water for 55 days by intragastric gavage. For the evaluation of short-term and long-term memories, object recognition and step-down inhibitory avoidance tests were performed. At the end of the behavioral tests, the animals were euthanized and the hippocampus dissected and processed to the evaluation of: Pb content levels in hippocampal parenchyma; Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels as parameters of oxidative stress and antioxidant status; global proteomic profile and neuronal degeneration by anti-NeuN immunohistochemistry analysis. Our results show the increase of Pb levels in the hippocampus of adult rats exposed from adolescence, increased MDA and GSH levels, modulation of proteins related to neural structure and physiology and reduced density of neurons, hence a poor cognitive performance on short and long-term memories. Then, the long-term exposure to Pb in this period of life may impair several biologic organizational levels of the hippocampal structure associated with functional damages.

O estudo propõe uma revisão integrativa da produção científica nacional acerca da interface entre Psicologia da Saúde e Saúde Coletiva. A revisão foi realizada utilizando as bases de dados reunidas na Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), através dos descritores "Saúde Coletiva" e "Saúde Pública" e da palavra-chave "Psicologia da Saúde". Os artigos foram encontrados predominantemente em periódicos que compreendem a área da Psicologia, fundamentados em pesquisas empíricas, com base em referências da Psicologia da Saúde e o pouco diálogo com a Saúde Coletiva. Conclui-se que, apesar do esforço de alguns autores da Psicologia da Saúde em propor possíveis aproximações com outros campos, incluindo a Saúde Coletiva, tais ações são preponderantemente focadas na ampliação de espaços de atuação profissional.


The study proposes an integrative review of the national scientific production about the interface between Health Psychology and Collective Health. The review was carried out utilizing the databases gathered in the Virtual Health Library (VHL), using the descriptors "Collective Health" and "Public Health" and the keyword "Health Psychology". The articles were found predominantly in periodicals that comprise the area of ​​Psychology, based on empirical research, based on references of Health Psychology and the little dialogue with Collective Health. It is concluded that, despite the efforts of some authors of Health Psychology in proposing possible approximations with other fields, including Collective Health, such actions are predominantly focused on the expansion of professional spaces.


El estudio propone una revisión integrativa de la producción científica nacional acerca de la interfaz entre Psicología de la Salud y Salud Colectiva. La revisión fue realizada utilizando las bases de datos reunidas en la Biblioteca Virtual en Salud (BVS), a través de los descriptores "Salud Colectiva" y "Salud Pública" y de la palabra clave "Psicología de la Salud". Los artículos fueron encontrados predominantemente en periódicos que comprenden el área de la Psicología, fundamentados en investigaciones empíricas, con base en referencias de la Psicología de la Salud y el poco diálogo con la Salud Colectiva. Concluye que, a pesar del esfuerzo de algunos autores de la Psicología de la Salud en proponer posibles aproximaciones con otros campos, incluyendo la Salud Colectiva, tales acciones están preponderantemente enfocadas en la ampliación de espacios de actuación profesional.
