RESUMO

A case report of a patient with tonsillitis and peritonsillar abscess, who subsequently developed fatal myocarditis, is presented. The clinical course and pathological findings are outlined. The rare association of tonsillitis and pharyngitis with non-rheumatic, non-diphtheritic, non-fatal myocarditis was recognized and reported in the pre and early antibiotic era. The present reported case is only the second recent description of fatal myocarditis associated with tonsillitis, and the first ever reported in the English Otolaryngologic literature.

RESUMO

Forty-three patients who underwent tympanoplasty with the use of a homograft tympanic membrane are reviewed. These procedures were performed by 10 different surgeons over a period of six years. The success rate of tympanic membrane closure, hearing results, and incidence of complication were studied. Results were examined to determine possible factors contributing to failure. The success rate and lack of complications suggest that homograft tympanic membrane tympanoplasty is a useful procedure, particularly where the blood supply to the tympanic remnant is felt to be in jeopardy.

RESUMO

A case of giant cell lesion arising from the maxilla is presented. The final clinical and pathological interpretation was of a true giant cell tumor. A review of the literature reveals giant cell lesions of the maxilla to be rare, with the dominant interpretation being giant cell reparative granuloma. On rare occasions, these lesions have been reported as true giant cell tumors. The histogenesis of these lesions in unknown. They may arise from cells of undifferentiated connective tissue, bone marrow, or from abnormal hyperplasia of osteoclasts. The modality of treatment and prognosis is dependent upon the final diagnosis.
