RESUMO

Data evaluating the effect of oleic-acid-enriched diets and outdoor rearing (with access to pasture) on the quality of Alentejano (AL) pork and fat are limited. The aim of this work was to study the effects of feeding low (LO) or high oleic acid (HO) diets to AL pigs reared in individual pens (IND) or outdoors (OUT) with access to pasture. Biceps femoris and dorsal subcutaneous fat (DSF) samples were collected to analyse chemical composition and lipids fatty acid (FA) profile. The expression of seven genes involved in lipogenesis, lipolysis and FA transport, as well as two transcription factors were also evaluated in the muscle. B. femoris and DSF presented lower lipid content in OUT-reared than in IND-reared pigs. Two genes involved in lipogenesis, ACACA and FASN, were under-expressed in B. femoris from OUT-reared pigs, while two involved in lipolysis, LPL and HSL were over-expressed. HO diet also significantly reduced FASN expression. Both rearing system and diet affected the FA profile of tissues, particularly DSF. Overall, OUT-reared pigs presented lower n6 to n3 FA ratios in all tissues, and lower monounsaturated (MUFA) and higher polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) content in DSF. When compared to LO-fed ones, HO-fed pigs presented higher oleic acid proportions in all tissues, and lower SFA, higher MUFA and PUFA levels, as well as lower saturation, atherogenic and thrombogenic indexes in DSF. This study shows that rearing system and oleic acid supplementation have complementary effects and influence the nutritional quality of pork and DSF.

Infectious diseases are known to cause decline in wildlife population and some of them may represent a threat to public health. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of Salmonella spp. in exotic and native Psittaciformes kept in captivity in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and to comparing the results obtained through the conventional bacteriological method and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), using fecal matter collected from the environment, avoiding the containment stress. From August to September 2016, samples of fresh feces were collected from 90 cages in two breeding grounds, representing 180 birds. According to both analysis techniques the samples were negative for Salmonella spp., however, bacteria from the Enterobacteriaceae family: Escherichia coli, Cedecea sp. and Citrobacter freundii were detected. Continuous monitoring of breeding grounds is important since the pathogen investigated can be found in carrier birds and manifest itself in stressful situations presenting risks such as zoonosis and reduced bird health.(AU)

RESUMO

Estragole, a relatively nontoxic terpenoid ether, is an important constituent of many essential oils with widespread applications in folk medicine and aromatherapy and known to have potent local anesthetic activity. We investigated the effects of estragole on the compound action potential (CAP) of the rat sciatic nerve. The experiments were carried out on sciatic nerves dissected from Wistar rats. Nerves, mounted in a moist chamber, were stimulated at a frequency of 0.2 Hz, with electric pulses of 50-100-æs duration at 10-20 V, and evoked CAP were monitored on an oscilloscope and recorded on a computer. CAP control parameters were: peak-to-peak amplitude (PPA), 9.9 ± 0.55 mV (N = 15), conduction velocity, 92.2 ± 4.36 m/s (N = 15), chronaxy, 45.6 ± 3.74 æs (N = 5), and rheobase, 3.9 ± 0.78 V (N = 5). Estragole induced a dose-dependent blockade of the CAP. At 0.6 mM, estragole had no demonstrable effect. At 2.0 and 6.0 mM estragole, PPA was significantly reduced at the end of 180-min exposure of the nerve to the drug to 85.6 ± 3.96 and 13.04 ± 1.80 percent of control, respectively. At 4.0 mM, estragole significantly altered PPA, conduction velocity, chronaxy, and rheobase (P <= 0.05, ANOVA; N = 5) to 49.3 ± 6.21 and 77.7 ± 3.84, 125.9 ± 10.43 and 116.7 ± 4.59 percent, of control, respectively. All of these effects developed slowly and were reversible upon a 300-min wash-out. The data show that estragole dose-dependently blocks nerve excitability.

RESUMO

Guyon's canal syndrome, an ulnar nerve entrapment at the wrist, is a well-recognized entity. The most common causes that involve the ulnar nerve at the wrist are compression from a ganglion, occupational traumatic neuritis, a musculotendinous arch and disease of the ulnar artery. We describe two cases of Guyon's canal syndrome and discuss the anatomy, aetiology, clinical features, anatomical classification, diagnostic criteria and treatment. It is emphasized that the knowledge of both the surgical technique and anatomy is very important for a satisfactory surgical result.

RESUMO

A 44-year-old female presented with Duret hemorrhage due to transtentorial herniation by extradural hematoma as a complication after craniotomy for treatment of spontaneous middle cranial fossa cerebrospinal fluid leakage through the oval window. Brain computed tomography revealed linear hemorrhage in the midbrain and the rostral pons. She awoke after 2 weeks in a coma, despite showing ocular bobbing and bilateral intranuclear ophthalmoplegia. She was discharged from the hospital with minimal neurological defects. Duret hemorrhage is usually fatal, but this case shows that early surgical decompression is the most important factor to avoid the worst sequelae.

RESUMO

Intracranial haematomas are a well-known complication of shunting procedures for hydrocephalic patients. Most are subdural haematomas, and epidural haematomas are much less common in this setting. Their aetiology is thought to be due to an overdrainage of cerebrospinal fluid and a rapid lowering of intracranial pressure, leading to the development of these haematomas. Since the advent of modern neuroimaging techniques, prompt diagnosis of postshunting intracranial haematoma has been possible even in asymptomatic patients. The choice between surgical and nonsurgical management of postshunting intracranial haematoma is a difficult and controversial issue, especially in asymptomatic patients. Several therapeutic options have been proposed for the treatment of postshunting intracranial haematoma. Evacuation of the haematoma by conventional neurosurgical methods with the implantation of a higher pressure valve system is the most common option adopted. Intraventricular haemorrhage is occasionally reported, chiefly in children with hydrocephalus associated with vein of Galen malformation.

RESUMO

Malignant ectomesenchymoma is an uncommon neoplasm composed of neuroectodermal elements and one or more mesenchymal neoplastic elements. It is believed to arise from remnants of migratory neural crest cells (ectomesenchyme). The authors report the clinical and pathological findings of a 3-year-old girl with malignant ectomesenchymoma of the CNS. Embryogenesis of this tumor is discussed, and a review of the literature with 39 other cases is done.

RESUMO

We report on 15 cases of medulloblastoma of adult onset (8 male and 7 female) operated upon posterior fossa approach from February 1988 to October 1995. Tumors were localized in cerebellar hemisphere in 7 cases (one with extension to supratentorial notch and another case reaching the cerebello-pontine angle cistern), in vermis and hemisphere in four, only in vermis in another four. Resection was total in seven patients, subtotal in other seven, and partial in one. There was no operative mortality. Aspects regarding biological behavior, diagnosis, pathological findings, surgery and survival are discussed as well as prognostic factors.

RESUMO

Morbidity due to cervical and breast cancer in Brazilian woman is high, despite the fact that these pathologies are preventable when detected early. The coverage of public health in this disease is unsatisfactory specially if one takes into account the fact that the techniques used for early detection and prevention of those types of cancer are simple and inexpensive. We observed that not many activities have been developed aiming at the education of women with regard to self-knowledge of their bodies. As a result, we prepared in 1993 a workshop entitled "Woman, a trip through her body" comprising 6 group dynamics where there is an intense participation of every woman as it is a very exciting process. The workshop is carried on by one member of the faculty staff, three nurses and nursing students of Federal University of Espírito Santo. There are 30 participants per workshop each one receiving a name tag. This workshop is composed of the following group dynamics which are developed in a cosy and informal atmosphere: Dynamic 1-Pocket History; Dynamic 2-Hands Touch; Dynamic 3-Drawing/ Modelling; Dynamic 4-Trip through the Body; Dynamic 5-Self-examination; Dynamic 6-Body Feeling.
