Fifteen patients with uveal melanoma were exposed to combined radiotherapy: transscleral exposure of melanoma using a ruthenium ophthalmoapplicator and intracorporeal administration of 59Fe. Radiation reaction of the tumor was potentiated by combined exposure.

[Acoustic studies of the sclera in progressive myopia in children and adolescents]. / Akusticheskie issledovaniia sklery pri progressiruiushchei blizorukosti u detei i podrostkov.

Acoustic density of the sclera (ADS) was examined using ultrasonic scanning device Ophthascan-B in 121 eyes of 91 patients aged 9 to 17 with progressive myopia of 3.5 to 14.0 diopters. ADS of the posterior pole and eyeball equator were measured separately. ADS in health was 47.6ë0.24 dB for the posterior pole and 46.0ë0.24 dB for the equator, in myopia 41.7ë0.26 and 38.8ë0.22 d, respectively. ADS in the eyes with myopia developing at school age was reliably higher than in cases with congenital and early acquired myopia. The lowest ADS values for both the posterior pole and equator were detected in patients with high early acquired myopia.

[A pharmacokinetic study of para-aminobenzoic acid administered into the rabbit eye by phonophoresis]. / Issledovanie farmakinetiki paraaminobenzoinoi kisloty pri vvedenii v glaz krolika metodom fonoforeza.

The pharmacokinetics of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) was studied after introduction of 3H-PABA in the rabbit eye by phonophoresis (1.8 ml 3H-PABA per eye, calculated from 10 muCi in 1 ml 0.9% sodium chloride). The label was found by liquid scintillation in all studied eye tissues, including the retina. Within 1 h the label content in the tissues was higher than within 3 after the isotope introduction. Thus, in addition to subcutaneous injection (Stroeva et al., 1992), another method of PABA introduction in the eye was used in order to further study its activity as a medicinal drug during treatment of degenerative processes in the retina.

[Ultrasonic cyclodialysis in glaucoma surgery in aphakia]. / Ul'trazvukovoi tsiklodializ v khirurgii glaukomy pri afakii.

The authors present the results of a new method for surgical treatment of aphakic eye glaucoma with the use of low-frequency ultrasound. The suggested surgery, ultrasonic cyclodialysis, was carried out in 15 patients with glaucoma on the aphakic eyes. A follow-up of 6 months has demonstrated a stable normalization of intraocular pressure. The mechanism of the hypotensive effect of the operation is explained largely by improvement of fluid discharge and a certain inhibition of the chamber humor production. The authors emphasize the sparing nature of the operation and a serene postoperative course.

[Differential diagnosis of retinoblastoma and Coats' retinitis using computer-assisted processing of ultrasonographic scanograms of the eye]. / Differentsial'naia diagnostika retinoblastomy i retinita Koatsa s pomoshch'iu komp'iuternoi obrabotki ul'trazvukovykh skanogramm glaza.

A new method for quantitative evaluation of ultrasonic scanograms of the eye, that permits differentiation between retinoblastoma and Coats' retinitis, was employed in echographic examinations of the eyes in 21 children with suspected intraocular volumic processes. Image analysis by plotting and processing of histogram was employed. High-confidence differences in the 'excess' and 'skewness' meanings of gradient histograms of patients with these two conditions have been detected.

[Intraoperative diagnosis in removal of foreign bodies from the eye]. / Intraoperatsionnaia diagnostika pri udalenii inorodnykh tel iz glaza.

The efficacy of intraoperative application of a complex of diagnostic clinical and instrumental methods, including gonioscopy, biomicroscopy, ophthalmoscopy, electron location, transillumination, ultrasonic location, and acoustic scanning, has been demonstrated in surgeries for removal of foreign bodies from the eyes of 548 patients. Clinical variants of the fragment site and the aggravating factors were defined, as were the informative value of each of the afore-said methods for each of these clinical variants.

[State of the vitreous body in children with congenital uveitis]. / Sostoianie steklovidnogo tela u detei s vrozhdennymi uveitami.

Comprehensive examinations of 150 children (229 eyes) with congenital uveitis have revealed vitreous changes in 75.9 percent. The structure of different opacities is presented and relationship between vitreous opacities patterns and subatrophy severity and intraocular pressure parameters detected. Recommendations are given on how to interpret the data of ultrasonic scanning and define the indications for opticoreconstructive surgery.
