As the severity of extreme precipitation events increases with global climate change, so will episodic pulses of contamination into lotic systems. Periphytic algae represents bioindicator species in most freshwater systems due to their rapid accumulation of toxicants; therefore, it is vital to understand how accumulation in this group differs across temporally variable exposure regimes. The ability to rapidly accrue contaminants has additional implications for the trophic transfer of metals to primary consumers. While dietary toxicity has been studied in algivorous consumers, techniques used to prepare contaminated periphytic algae for consumption have not been compared. This study used a modified subcellular fractionation method to compare the partitioning of zinc (Zn) in periphyton cultures exposed for various durations (cultured in the presence of Zn and 15 min, 24 h, and 48 h exposures). Three exposure groups were additionally depurated over a period of 24 h in order to compare retention of Zn, an important aspect of preparing diets used in dietary toxicity studies. The results not only provide evidence for increased retention by periphytic algae cultured in the presence of Zn but reveal relationships among treatments and subcellular partitioning that suggest time-dependent accumulation and detoxification. These relationships suggest that episodic exposure of periphytic algae to contaminants may pose a greater risk than that of chronic regimes. Based on these results, we additionally advocate for culturing periphytic algae in the presence of contamination to produce a more reliable diet for dietary exposure testing in algivorous organisms.

While the expansion of anthropogenic noise studies in aquatic habitats has produced conservation-based results for a range of taxa, relatively little attention has been paid to the potential impacts on stream fishes. Recent work has shown responses to road noise in single species of stream fish; however, assemblage-wide effects of anthropogenic noise pollution have not yet been investigated. By examining five metrics of disturbance across four ecologically and evolutionarily disparate species of stream fishes, a series of laboratory experiments aimed to describe the effects of and species susceptibility to anthropogenic noise playback. Each species studied represented a unique combination of hearing sensitivity and water column position. Physiological and behavioral metrics were compared across the presence and absence of rail-noise noise playback in four target species. Through repeated subsampling, the temporal dynamics of cortisol secretion in response to noise in two target species were additionally described. Rail-noise playback had no statistically significant effect on blood glucose or water-borne cortisol levels, with the exception of decreased cortisol in noise-exposed largescale stoneroller (Campostoma oligolepis). Time-course cortisol experiments revealed rapid secretion and showed minimal effects of noise at most observation points. The presence of noise produced significant changes in ventilation rate and swimming parameters in a portion of the four species observed representing the most conserved responses. Overall, effects of noise were observed in species contrary to what would be hypothesized based on theoretical hearing sensitivity and water column position demonstrating that predicting susceptibility to this type of stressor cannot be accomplished based off these course considerations alone. More importantly, we show that anthropogenic noise can disrupt a variety of behavioral and physiological processes in certain taxa and should be further investigated via measures of fitness in the wild.

A better understanding of the role of appetite regulation in obesity and metabolic disorders requires consideration of both genetic and developmental influences on appetite. Previously we detected genetic differences in responses to nutritional programming (e.g., the permanent influence that nutrition in early life has on the physiological and metabolic states in adults) on a presumed measure of appetite (feeding rate) in the swordtail fish Xiphophorus multilineatus. In this study we validate that feeding rate is a good measure of appetite, by first demonstrating that it is repeatable and correlated with food consumed when controlling for body size. Second, we detected a significant positive correlation between juvenile growth rates and feeding rates measured in adult males, when growth has ceased. In addition, feeding rates explained significant variation in the size of the nuchal hump, a fat deposit that develops after sexual maturity. Finally, we show that the feeding rates of "courter" males were significantly greater than "sneaker" males, alternative reproductive tactics that are influenced by variation in the Mc4r gene on the Y-chromosome. Our results suggest that examining feeding rate in X. multilineatus could provide valuable insights into how nutritional programming influences appetite independently from food intake, as well as insights into the mechanisms that produce the correlation between delayed maturation and faster growth rates of the courter males as compared with the sneaker males that mature early and grow slower in this species.
