BACKGROUND: Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring has been variously explored as a diagnostic and therapeutic modality in many pathological conditions leading neurological injury. This monitoring standardly depends on an invasive procedure such as cranial or lumbar catheterization. The gold standard for ICP monitoring is through an intraventricular catheter, but this invasive technique is associated with certain risks such as haemorrhage and infection. (1) Also, it is a high-cost procedure and consequently not available in a variety of underprivileged places and clinical situations in which intracranial hypertension is prevalent (3). An accurate non-invasive and low-priced method to measure elevated ICP would therefore be desirable. Under these circumstances, Brazilian scientists developed a non-invasive method for intracranial pressure monitoring (ICP-NI), which uses an electric resistance extensometer that measures micro deformations of the skull and transforms it into an electrical signal. In this case report, the authors describe a pediatrician patient with the diagnosis of idiopathic intracranial hypertension who was successfully submitted to a lumbar puncture under monitorization with this device. CASE DESCRIPTION: 7 year old girl with progressive symptoms that lead to the diagnosis of idiopathic intracranial hypertension. The patient was submitted to a lumbar punction with continuous non-invasive ICP monitoring. CONCLUSION: Estimating ICP (non-invasive) from LP monitoring (invasive) often reflect inaccurate ICP results, and affects negatively on IIH diagnosis and a non-invasive diagnostic method could reduce the requirement for invasive approaches, improving patient health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy can trigger several pathological changes, thus representing a great challenge for gynecology and obstetrics. The objective is to evaluate high- and low-risk pregnant women through Intracranial pressure (ICP) and laboratory parameters. METHODS: Volunteers clinical and laboratory data were collected from medical records and ICP was monitored through noninvasive method. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were observed between the group of high-risk and low-risk pregnant women for serum levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and US-C-reactive protein (CRP) and a statistically positive association between blood pressure (BP) levels and plasma glucose. About 12.77% of the volunteers presented altered ICP. Higher BP values were encountered with the higher plasma glucose values. All ICP altered volunteers presented altered BP. ALP is among the most effective biochemical markers for assessing the risk of premature birth before 32 weeks of gestation. CONCLUSION: We have observed important changes on BP, serum glucose, US-CRP, and ALP thus indicating higher risk of complications during pregnancy. Even more, some of the volunteers presented altered ICP what could indicate cerebral compliance changes.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is known to cause an enormous impairment to the quality of life and impact in the health system; meanwhile, studies show that in the coming years, the number of affected individuals will continue to grow. It is also believed that amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) could represent an early symptomatic form of AD, which precedes dementia. Methods: The present study aimed to evaluate the intracranial pressure (ICP) through a noninvasive method in patients with AD and MCI, seeking for differences when compared to healthy elderlies. This is a cross-sectional, correlational, and observational study of a quantitative character, carried out in a Brazilian city, with patients from the ANEC of the UFSCar. Results: It was found a statistically significant difference between the ICP morphology when analyzing the results in patients with AD and MCI, compared to healthy volunteers. It is known that dementias means a progressive disorder that leads to the loss of independency and function of the patient, although, it is believed that it can be found early ICP alterations in these patients. Nevertheless, considering this is an unprecedent study, it was not possible to compare results with previous studies and literatures. However, the study has a limitation related to the sample size; an expansion of it could possibility lead to different findings. Conclusion: The findings through the ICP measurement could indicate an early diagnosis, which would lead to an early treatment and an improvement in the quality of life of patients with AD. Thus, further investigation and widening studies are encouraged.
