RESUMO

The effect of a 940-980 nm length wave laser radiation on rheumatoid arthritis was analyzed in 60 patients: 44 adults and 16 children. Each joint was daily treated by irradiation during 7 minutes for a period of 10 days. The evolution was estimated using an analogic scale with 3 steps for 2 parameters: local pain and local inflammation for each treated joint. The evolution was favourable in both aspects, but the inflammation seemed to be better influenced than the pain. The evolution was better in children than in adults. The inflammations of the interphalangeal, carpometacarpal and shoulder's joints were a better evolution than the knee inflammation. The serological data were not influenced by laser therapy. When relapse never the treated joint was affected again. No adverse or unwanted effects were observed during the treatment excepting a sedation and an increase of night sleep duration.

RESUMO

A favorable effect of laser therapy in rheumatic diseases was demonstrated in a previous paper [9] but it was not possible to estimate whether this benefit was due to an antiinflammatory, analgesic or decontracturant effect. In this work the effect of laser therapy was tested on an experimental inflammation in rats. Laser irradiation reduced the volume of the inflammation during 6 days of treatment more than 85% and prevented the appearance of necrosis. In the control group, the reduction of inflammation was of only 22.86%, the difference vs. the treated group being significant for p = 0.00009, and eight rats of the ten developed local necrosis.

RESUMO

The effect of a 940-980 nm length wave laser radiation in rheumatic degenerative diseases was studied in 136 patients unresponsive to or with contraindications for antiinflammatory non-steroid therapy. The evolution was clinically estimated using four parameters; pain, muscular contracture, local edema and the impairment of the articular mobility. All patients presented a beneficial evolution appearing gradually during the treatment. The osteoarthritis of the knee, ankle and shoulder evolved worse than the painful back. The painful back presented an improved evolution when it was located at the thoracal level. No adverse reaction was observed during this study.

RESUMO

Plasma viscosity (Pv), and that of an erythrocyte suspension in isotonic saline solution (called erythrocyte viscosity--Ev) were determined by means of a viscosimeter of personal construction. The Ev/Pv ratio, called relative erythrocyte viscosity (Rv), was then calculated. The measurements were performed in flow conditions similar to the physiologic ones. An analysis of the variations of these parameters in different internal diseases has revealed high Pv values in the pathologic states associated with dysproteinemia. Pv correlates with the ESR but not with the hematocrit. Ev levels were increased in many diseases and did not correlate with any of the current laboratory parameters. Ev might be a prognostic factor for the arterial hypertension evolution. Rv analysis suggests a possible dynamic balance between Pv and Ev.
