RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to elucidate the possible effects of the acute/long-term infusion of glucagon in the brain as the regulatory role on the endocrine secretions of the pancreas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety male Wistar albino rats were divided as Control, artificial Cerebrospinal Fluid (aCSF) (120 min), Glucagon (120 min), pancreatic denervation (PD)+aCSF (120 min), PD+Glucagon (120 min), aCSF (7 days), Glucagon (7 days), PD+aCSF (7 days) and PD+Glucagon (7 days). Glucagon and solvent (aCSF) were administered after pancreatic denervation (PD) by Hamilton syringe and osmotic mini pump (1 µg/10 µl/min) in the third ventricle of the brain. RESULTS: Acute intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of glucagon resulted in an elevation of glucagon levels and a concurrent reduction in blood glucose levels. Furthermore, in both the PD+aCSF (7 days) and PD+Glucagon (7 days) groups, there was a notable decrease in propiomelanocortin (POMC) and agouti-related protein (AgRP). Significant changes were observed in feed consumption and body weight, as well as pancreatic glucagon levels, with a simultaneous decrease in insulin levels in the PD (7 days), Glucagon (7 days), and PD+Glucagon (7 days) groups. These alterations were statistically significant when compared to the control group (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The research outcomes established that pancreas-secreted glucagon functions as a neurohormone within the brain, activating central pathways linked to blood glucose regulation. The presence of glucagon led to a decrease in POMC levels. Surprisingly, this reduction in POMC resulted in the suppression of AgRP. Contrary to expectations, the suppression of AgRP led to an increase in food intake rather than a decrease. As already highlighted in the results section, it was emphasized that POMC may play a more significant role than AgRP in influencing feeding behavior.

RESUMO

The Food, Beverage & Tobacco (F&B) industry is an essential sector in the competitive economy. Procurement of production factors mainly depends on sales forecasting and the supply chain of raw materials. However, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has jeopardized the global supply chain. As the conflict worsened, the world faced a food crisis, which was already a significant challenge due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Understanding how conflict-related disruptions in global food markets might affect the stock return of the F&B industry of South Korea, this study forecasts the stock returns on the KOSDAQ F&B sector. This paper highlights that the conflict resulted in immediate and far-reaching consequences on the global food supply chain and future crop harvesting in South Korea. As numerous algorithms have been widely used in predicting stock market returns, we use Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model for the prediction. Using daily returns from the KOSDAQ F&B industry from January 1999 to October 2022, the study proposes an ARIMA (2,2,3) model to forecast future movements of the stock returns. With an RMSE of 0.012, the prediction performance holds good using the ARIMA model. The results show a negative trend observed in the F&B sector returns for a few months, implying that sector stock returns decline as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine becomes more pronounced. This study also suggests that South Korea has massive scope to stabilize the demand for healthy, safe food, give more attention to domestic agribusiness, and make itself a self-sufficient agri-economy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: There are limited studies investigating the role of irisin in colorectal cancer, and the results are diverse. The role of irisin in colorectal cancer patients was investigated in this study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 53 patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC) and 87 healthy volunteers. Serum irisin, glucose, insulin, C-peptide, and whole blood hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels were measured in venous blood samples taken from patients and the control group. RESULTS: The mean serum irisin levels were significantly lower in the patient group (23.97 ± 16.94 ng/mL) than in the control group (32.71 ± 17.26 ng/mL) (p = 0.004). Serum glucose levels were 96.58 ± 15.12 mg/dL in the patient group and 81.91 ± 11.24 mg/dL in the control group. Serum glucose levels were significantly higher in the patient group than in the control group (p < 0.01). In the patient group, there was no statistically significant difference between metastasis (+) patients and metastasis (-) patients in terms of serum irisin levels (27.53 ± 18.48 ng/mL and 21.23 ± 15.43 ng/mL, respectively; p = 0.182). CONCLUSIONS: Our study has provided new insights into the potential role of irisin in CRC. However, further studies, including in vitro, in vivo, and larger patient groups, are necessary to fully understand the potential of irisin as a biomarker or therapeutic target for CRC and other diseases.

RESUMO

Surgical treatments for ischemic priapism (IP) include shunts or penile implants. Non-ischemic priapism (NIP) is usually the result of penile/perineal trauma causing an arterial fistula and embolisation may be required. We conducted a systematic review on behalf of the EAU Sexual and Reproductive health Guidelines panel to analyse the available evidence on efficacy and safety of surgical modalities for IP and NIP. Outcomes were priapism resolution, sexual function and adverse events following surgery. Overall, 63 studies (n = 923) met inclusion criteria up to September 2021. For IP (n = 702), surgery comprised distal (n = 274), proximal shunts (n = 209) and penile prostheses (n = 194). Resolution occurred in 18.7-100% for distal, 5.7-100% for proximal shunts and 100% for penile prostheses. Potency rate was 20-100% for distal, 11.1-77.2% for proximal shunts, and 26.3-100% for penile prostheses, respectively. Patient satisfaction was 60-100% following penile prostheses implantation. Complications were 0-42.5% for shunts and 0-13.6% for IPP. For NIP (n = 221), embolisation success was 85.7-100% and potency 80-100%. The majority of studies were retrospective cohort studies. Risk of bias was high. Overall, surgical shunts have acceptable success rates in IP. Proximal/venous shunts should be abandoned due to morbidity/ED rates. In IP > 48 h, best outcomes are seen with penile prostheses implantation. Embolisation is the mainstay technique for NIP with high resolution rates and adequate erectile function.

RESUMO

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited hemoglobin disorder characterized by the occlusion of small blood vessels by sickle-shaped red blood cells. SCD is associated with a number of complications, including ischemic priapism. While SCD accounts for at least one-third of all priapism cases, no definitive treatment strategy has been established to specifically treat patients with SC priapism. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the efficacy and safety of contemporary treatment modalities for acute and stuttering ischemic priapism associated with SCD. The primary outcome measures were defined as resolution of acute priapism (detumescence) and complete response of stuttering priapism, while the primary harm outcome was as sexual dysfunction. The protocol for the review has been registered (PROSPERO Nr: CRD42020182001), and a systematic search of Medline, Embase, and Cochrane controlled trials databases was performed. Three trials with 41 observational studies met the criteria for inclusion in this review. None of the trials assessed detumescence, as a primary outcome. All of the trials reported a complete response of stuttering priapism; however, the certainty of the evidence was low. It is clear that assessing the effectiveness of specific interventions for priapism in SCD, well-designed, adequately-powered, multicenter trials are strongly required.

RESUMO

Objective: Teledentistry is considered to be a technological advancement in providing dental care to patients while effectively addressing the time management. Furthermore, the pandemic of COVID-19 has been here for quite long now, forcing the dental practitioners to ponder upon other methods of healthcare delivery apart from the traditional in-office direct clinical examination. The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions of dental professionals of Malaysia regarding teledentistry, which can act as a future pedestal for improvements in virtual dental practice and patient care. Materials and Methods: It was a descriptive, cross-sectional study involving an electronic survey of a sample of dental professionals of Malaysia. A prevalidated, 26-item, 5-point Likert-scale questionnaire was used in assessing the perceptions of dental professionals regarding teledentistry in four domains: existing concerns about teledentistry use, the potential of teledentistry in improving practice, usefulness of teledentistry for dental practice, and its usefulness for patients. Statistical analyses involved descriptive statistics which included frequency distributions. Results: An overall response rate of 31.0% was observed with 310 dental practitioners participating in the survey. More than 60% of respondents agreed that teledentistry would benefit the dental practice through enhancement of communication with peers, guidance, and new patients' referral. However, a substantial proportion of practitioners (70-80%) expressed uncertainty with accuracy of diagnosis, technical reliability, and privacy. Conclusion: Generally, the results of this study point towards the readiness of dental professionals of Malaysia to engage in teledentistry practice. However, further work needs to be done to assess the commercial feasibility of teledentistry, not only in Malaysia but also in other parts of the world. To start with, directed campaigns in reference to teledentistry are necessary to educate dentists and the public about the technology and its potential.

RESUMO

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) causes cardiovascular damage in the acute period. Knowledge regarding cardiovascular damage after COVID-19 infection and during longer-term follow-up is currently limited. In our study, we aimed to compare cardiac and inflammatory markers and echocardiographic parameters between patients who had recovered from COVID-19 and control group. A total of 224 individuals were included, comprising 126 patients with a history of COVID-19 and 98 healthy controls. The demographic characteristics of the two groups were similar. Complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), N-terminal pro-B type natriuretic peptide (NT-ProBNP), D-dimer, haemoglobin A1C, troponin T and creatine kinase myocardial band (CK-MB) levels were compared between both groups. The mean follow-up period of the COVID-19 group was 58.39 ± 39.1 days (range:10 - 180 days post-COVID-19). Red cell distribution width (RDW), ESR, CRP, NT-ProBNP, D-dimer and troponin T values were significantly higher in the COVID-19 group compared to the control group. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was significantly lower in the COVID-19 group. Left ventricular diastolic diameter (LVDD) and incidence of pericardial effusion were higher in the COVID-19 group. For multivariate analysis, possible factors identified by univariate analysis were subjected to multivariate logistic regression analysis to determine independent predictors of COVID-19. Among these factors, RDW, CRP and LVEF were independently higher in the COVID-19 group than in the control group. We conclude that although the clinical and prognostic significance of cardiac and other inflammatory markers in the acute phase of COVID-19 is known, we found that these biomarkers and echocardiography parameters can also be used in the follow-up of cardiac injury for a mid-term period post-infection.

RESUMO

A 54-year-old female patient with complaints of abdominal pain for 2 months was admitted to the General Surgery clinic of our tertiary care hospital. Abdominal ultrasound (US) and computed tomography revealed cholelithiasis, liver hydatid cyst, and hypodense multicystic mass lesion in the pancreatic body. In the endoscopic US performed, pancreatic hydatid cysts were considered as the pre-diagnosis. Cystotomy and external drainage were performed on the 8-cm cystic lesion in the pancreas head-class junction. Pancreatic hydatid cyst can be rarely seen isolated or can develop synchronously to liver hydatid cyst, and should be kept in mind in a differential diagnosis. If the perioperative diagnosis is confirmed and in case of the absence of a pancreatic ductal fistula, surgical morbidity and mortality can be reduced by applying cystotomy and external drainage procedures.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a clinical syndrome characterized by prominent physical and psychological impairment and widespread pain on both sides of the body, above and below the waist, and along the axial skeleton. It often causes sleep difficulties, memory impairment, mood changes, irritable bowel syndrome, and fatigue. Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between FM and prolidase (peptidase D) and histone H3 protein levels by comparing a patient group with a healthy control group. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In total, 176 people were examined in our study, 88 of whom were healthy and 88 of whom had FM. Serum level was measured by ELISA. Then the results were analyzed using SPSS. All p < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: A significant increase in the levels of prolidase was observed in the patient group compared with the control group (6.28-4.68, p <0.001). Histone H3 protein values were not significantly different between the patient and control groups (p=0.184). The ROC analysis indicated that prolidase was statistically significant in disease prediction (p<0.001, AUC: 0.795 (0.697-0.893), while histone H3 protein was statistically insignificant in predicting disease. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study show that prolidase activity may play a role in diagnosing FM. In addition, since no study like ours has been performed before, it can bring a new perspective to the literature.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine histopathological changes in nasal mucosa associated with duration of nasal packing with Merocel tampons. METHODS: This study included 24 healthy rabbits, 6 rabbits per group. In group A, no tampon was applied. In group B, Merocel nasal tampons were applied and removed after 24 hours. In group C, the tampons were removed after 48 hours. In group D, the tampons were removed after 5 days. Specimens were obtained from the septum of each rabbit, including cartilage. Histopathological examination was performed. RESULTS: Significant differences were observed in terms of inflammatory infiltration and loss of cilia between groups A and B. Significant differences were also observed in terms of inflammatory infiltration, haematoma, cilia loss, epithelium dysplasia and cartilage degeneration between groups B and C. There were significant differences in terms of cilia loss, epithelium dysplasia and subepithelial fibrosis between groups C and D. Cartilage degeneration was mild in one animal in group B and in two animals in group C, and was moderate in four animals in group C. CONCLUSION: It is recommended that Merocel nasal tampons are removed within 48 hours to preserve nasal mucosal function. Keeping the pack longer may cause cartilage degeneration and other complications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Fournier's Gangrene (FG) is the necrotizing fasciitis of the perineal region. AIMS: To compare the effectiveness of debridement alone and debridement with vacuum-assisted closure in the treatment of Fournier's gangrene. METHODS: Twenty-two patients operated for FG were analyzed retrospectively. Debridement-only and debridement + VAC treatment groups were compared in terms of age, gender, predisposing factors, comorbid diseases, intensive care unit and hospital stay durations, laboratory results, septic shock, treatment methods, Fournier' gangrene severity index (FGSI) and mortality. RESULTS: The M/F ratio was 13/9. There were 10 and 12 patients in debridement-only and debridement + VAC groups, respectively. Ten patients (45.5%) were admitted to intensive care unit, 8 (36.4%) needed colostomy and 7 (31.9%) developed septic shock, respectively. The mortality rate was 27.3%. There was no significant difference in terms of age, gender, laboratory parameters, number of debridement, length of stay in intensive care unit and hospital, shock duration, and mortality (P > 0.05). The FGSI scores also did not show any difference between the groups which showed that the severity of the disease in both groups are similar. CONCLUSION: The VAC treatment was found not to provide a statistically significant benefit on mortality. Early and adequate debridement and antibiotic are still the most important factors in the treatment of FG and to reduce mortality.

RESUMO

This study is aimed at assessing the influence of Nd:YAG, Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation, and adjunctive photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on the bond strength of zirconia posts to radicular dentin. Eighty extracted anterior teeth were randomly categorized into 4 groups (n = 20) based on varying laser irradiation treatments, i.e., conventional cleaning and shaping (CCS), Nd:YAG, Er,Cr:YSGG, and aPDT group, respectively. Using a cutting machine, the samples were prepared for push-out bond strength analysis; 4 sections (2 on each apical and cervical) of around 1 mm thickness were sectioned for all roots at a right angle to the long axis of the post. After making the space for the post, they were incorporated into the root system and were subjected to different laser treatments. The universal testing machine was utilized to assess the push-out bond strength, which had a defined 1 mm/minute crosshead speed until the failure was encountered. Specimens in the aPDT group (8.20 ± 2.14 MPa) demonstrated the highest mean push-out bond strength, whereas the lowest was shown by samples in the CCS group (7.08 ± 1.11 MPa). According to the independent t-test, the mean push-out bond strength scores of the cervical segments were higher as compared to the apical segments in research groups (p < 0.05). Overall, the adhesive type was the most frequently encountered failure mode in all of the experimental groups, with the least number of failures observed in aPDT treated teeth samples. In conclusion, the push-out bond strength to radicular dentin was not much influenced by Nd:YAG, Er,Cr:YSGG laser, and aPDT in comparison with CCS. Although statistically not significant, however, the application of aPDT provided better outcomes as compared to other research groups.

RESUMO

Growing prevalence of mental illnesses and the role they play in the global disease burden is an emerging public health issue. The prevalence of depression and anxiety is on the rise in Malaysia. Low-income urban communities are among the key affected populations with regards to mental health problems. This cross-sectional study was aimed to determine the prevalence and severity of depression, anxiety and stress, and their associated factors among adults in the low-income community of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. A total of 248 participants aged 18-60 years old were recruited. Data were collected via face-to-face interviews using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 Items (DASS-21). Chi-squared test was used to examine the association between the variables. Multiple ordinal regression model was introduced to identify the predictors of depression, anxiety and stress. The proportions of participants with depression, anxiety and stress were 24.2% (95% CI: 19.6-30.4), 36.3% (95% CI: 29.9-43.0), and 20.6% (95% CI: 15.4-26.5), respectively. There was a statistically significant association of ethnicity (p = 0.002) and age (p = 0.014) with the severity of depression, ethnicity (p = 0.001) and age (p = 0.024) with the severity of anxiety, and ethnicity (p < 0.001) and marital status (p = 0.006) with the severity of stress. In a multivariable analysis, only non-Malay ethnicity was an independent predictor of the severity of depression [OR = 2.43, 95% CI (1.25, 4.72), p = 0.009], anxiety [OR = 2.55, 95% CI (1.41, 4.62), p = 0.002] and stress [OR = 4.28, 95% CI (2.06, 8.89), p = <0.001]. Mental health interventions should target low-income communities to address social inequalities of mental health within economically disadvantaged populations.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Glutathione S-transferase (GST) gene deletion or polymorphic sequence variations lead to decreased enzyme activity that influences susceptibility and response to tyrosine kinase inhibitors in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). We aimed to analyze relation of different GST gene sequence variants with susceptibility and response to Imatinib in CML. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 150 CML cases and equal number of age and gender matched healthy controls were genotyped for five GST polymorphisms by multiplex-PCR and PCR-RFLP techniques. BCR-ABL1 transcripts were quantified by quantitative Real Time PCR (qRT-PCR). RESULTS: GSTT1, GSTO1, and GSTO2 SNPs revealed no association, while as GSTM1null genotype was observed to protect against the development of CML (OR = 0.53, P = .01). GSTP1 variant genotypes AG (OR = 2.1, P = .003) and GG (OR = 5.6, P < .001), significantly associated with increased risk of CML. Combined genotype analysis showed protective impact of GSTT1present /GSTM1null (OR = 0.44, P = .003) while as GSTT1present /GSTP1-GG (OR = 6.92, P < .001) and GSTM1present /GSTP1-GG (OR = 6.33, P < .001), significantly increased CML risk. GSTM1null genotype individually and in combination with GSTT1present associated with superior rate of major molecular response (MMR) and event free survival (EFS) (log-rank P = .029). GSTO2-AG+GG genotype associated with significantly inferior MMR rates at 3, 6, and 12 months. Also, patients with GSTO2-GG genotype showed significantly reduced EFS (log-rank P = .025). Multivariate analysis confirmed GSTM1null as a better (HR:0.19, P = .029) and GSTO2-GG genotype as an independent poor prognostic factor (HR:2.29, P = .037). CONCLUSION: GSTM1null genotype seems to have a better prognostic role while GSTP1 variants significantly increase CML risk. Also, results support a correlation between disease outcome and GSTO2 polymorphism.

RESUMO

We aimed to evaluate the major adverse cardiac events and other clinical outcomes in ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) cases treated with prasugrel versus ticagrelor after percutaneous intervention (PCI). The study was a prospective comparative study into which 560 patients diagnosed with STEMI, being suitable for PCI, and prescribed with either prasugrel (n = 232) or ticagrelor (n = 328) as oral antiplatelet therapy were included. Patients were followed up for a mean of 10.9 ± 4.7 months and 11.9 ± 4.9 months for prasugrel and ticagrelor groups, respectively. The major adverse cardiac events developed in similar rates between prasugrel and ticagrelor groups (7.3% versus 7.9%, respectively, p = 0.793). Even if mortality rate was higher in ticagrelor group, the difference did not reach statistically significance (3.4% vs. 6.7%, p=0.092). Among all study population, stent thrombosis and minor bleeding was recorded only in 7 (1.2%) and 12 (2.1%) patients without significant difference between prasugrel and ticagrelor groups. Twenty patients (8.6%) in prasugrel group and 47 patients (14.3%) in ticagrelor group discontinued treatment (p = 0.023). In ticagrelor group, 12 patients discontinued treatment due to dyspnea, but none in prasugrel group (p = 0.001). Prasugrel and ticagrelor have similar effects on major adverse cardiac events in patients with STEMI undergoing primary PCI, but prasugrel seems more tolerated and less discontinued than ticagrelor.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a tumor that occurs in the gastrointestinal tract, most frequently in the stomach or small intestine. This study aimed to reveal the clinical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical features of patients with GIST and to determine the effect of adjuvant tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) use on survival rates in intermediate-risk gastric GIST cases. METHODS: Clinical characteristics, histopathological findings, and oncological outcomes of 51 patients operated on for gastric GIST between 2010 and 2019 were analyzed retrospectively. Patients treated with neoadjuvant and adjuvant TKI were identified. The effect of adjuvant therapy on survival in the intermediate-risk group was examined. RESULTS: There were 33 females and 18 males, with a mean age of 64.9 ± 12.8 years. The most common surgical procedure was gastric wedge resection. Three cases were treated with laparoscopy, and 48 underwent open surgery. A multi-visceral resection was carried out in three cases. All cases underwent R0 resection. In the intermediate-risk group, there were no statistical differences between individuals receiving adjuvant therapy (n =12) and those not receiving adjuvant therapy (n =6) regarding survival rates (p =0.157). The average follow-up period was 54.9 (min: 2 - max: 106) months. Over this period, in three and five patients, recurrence and metastases occurred, respectively, and seven patients succumbed to the disease. Disease-free survival for five years was 93.7 %, metastasis-free survival was 83.4 %, and overall survival was 86.7 %. HIPPOKRATIA 2021, 25 (3):113-118. RESUMO

Background: Recent studies have shown that higher income is associated with a higher risk for subsequent obesity in low- and middle-income countries, while in high-income countries there is a reversal of the association - higher-income individuals have a lower risk of obesity. The concept of being able to afford to overeat is no longer a predictor of obesity in developed countries. In Malaysia, a trend has been observed that the prevalence of obesity increases with an increase in income among the low-income (B40) group. This trend, however, was not further investigated. Therefore, this study was performed to investigate the association of income and other sociodemographic factors with obesity among residents within the B40 income group in an urban community.  Methods: This cross-sectional study used a systematic sampling technique to recruit participants residing in a Program Perumahan Rakyat (PPR), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The sociodemographic characteristics were investigated through face-to-face interviews. Weight and height were measured, and body mass index (BMI) was calculated and coded as underweight, normal, overweight and obese according to the cut-off points for the Asian population. A chi-squared test was used to compare the prevalence of obesity in this study with the national prevalence. A generalized linear model was introduced to identify BMI predictors. Results: Among the 341 participants, 25 (7.3%) were underweight, 94 (27.6%) had normal weight, 87 (25.5%) were overweight, and 135 (39.6%) were obese. The proportion of obese adults (45.8%) was significantly higher than the national prevalence of 30.6% (p<0.001). Among all the tested variables, only income was significantly associated with BMI (p=0.046). Conclusion: The proportion of obesity in this urban poor community was higher compared with the national average. BMI increased as the average monthly household income decreased.

RESUMO

Inhalation of welding fume (WF) can result in the deposition of toxic metals, such as manganese (Mn), in the brain and may cause neurological changes in exposed workers. Alterations in telomere length are indicative of cellular aging and, possibly, neurodegeneration. Here, we investigated the effect of WF inhalation on telomere length and markers of neurodegeneration in whole brain tissue in rats. Male Fischer-344 (F-344) rats were exposed by inhalation to stainless steel WF (20 mg/m3 x 3 h/d x 4 d/wk x 5 wk) or filtered air (control). Telomere length, DNA-methylation, gene expression of Trf1, Trf2, ATM, and APP, protein expression of p-Tau, α-synuclein, and presenilin 1 and 2 were assessed in whole brain tissue at 12 wk after WF exposure ended. Results suggest that WF inhalation increased telomere length without affecting telomerase in whole brain. Moreover, we observed that components of the shelterin complex, Trf1 and Trf2, play an important role in telomere end protection, and their regulation may be responsible for the increase in telomere length. In addition, expression of different neurodegeneration markers, such as p-Tau, presenilin 1-2 and α-synuclein proteins, were increased in brain tissue from the WF-exposed rats as compared to control. These findings suggest a possible correlation between epigenetic modifications, telomere length alteration, and neurodegeneration because of the presence of factors in serum after WF exposure that may cause extra-pulmonary effects as well as the translocation of potentially neurotoxic metals associated with WF to the central nervous system (CNS). Further studies are needed to investigate the brain region specificity and temporal response of these effects.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of surgical treatment for nasal obstruction on sexual functions, regardless of the condition causing the nasal obstruction. METHODS: Of 238 patients identified with nasal obstruction, 57 complained of erectile dysfunction and were included in the analysis. Patients underwent septoplasty, functional endoscopic sinus surgery, concha bullosa excision or radiofrequency ablation of the inferior turbinates, depending on their obstruction-causing disease. Pre- and post-operative evaluation of perceived nasal obstruction was performed using the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation questionnaire. Pre- and post-operative assessment of sexual functions was performed using the International Index of Erectile Function. RESULTS: Mean post-operative scores for erectile function, orgasmic function, sexual desire, intercourse satisfaction and overall sexual satisfaction were significantly higher compared to the pre-operative scores (p = 0.022, p = 0.036, p = 0.033, p = 0.016 and p = 0.029, respectively). CONCLUSION: Surgical treatment of nasal obstruction by septoplasty, endoscopic sinus surgery, concha bullosa excision or radiofrequency can significantly improve sexual performance.

RESUMO

Accumulation of NaCl in soil causes osmotic stress in plants, and sodium (Na+ ) and chloride (Cl- ) cause ion toxicity, but also reduce the potassium (K+ ) uptake by plant roots and stimulate the K+ efflux through the cell membrane. Thus, decreased K+ /Na+ ratio in plant tissue lead us to hypothesise that elevated levels of K+ in nutrient medium enhance this ratio in plant tissue and cytosol to improve enzyme activation, osmoregulation and charge balance. In this study, wheat was cultivated at different concentrations of K+ (2.2, 4.4 or 8.8 mm) with or without salinity (1, 60 or 120 mm NaCl) and the effects on growth, root and shoot Na+ and K+ distribution and grain yield were determined. Also, the cytosolic Na+ concentration was investigated, as well as photosynthesis rate and water potential. Salinity reduced fresh weight of both shoots and roots and dry weight of roots. The grain yield was significantly reduced under Na+ stress and improved with elevated K+ fertilisation. Elevated K+ level during cultivation prevented the accumulation of Na+ into the cytosol of both shoot and root protoplasts. Wheat growth at vegetative stage was transiently reduced at the highest K+ concentration, perhaps due to plants' efforts to overcome a high solute concentration in the plant tissue, nevertheless grain yield was increased at both K+ levels. In conclusion, a moderately elevated K+ application to wheat seedlings reduces tissue as well as cytosolic Na+ concentration and enhances wheat growth and grain yield by mitigating the deleterious effects of Na+ toxicity.
