RESUMO

Within recent years, there has been an increased interest towards organic photovoltaics (OPVs), especially with their significant device performance reaching beyond 19% since 2022. With these advances in the device performance of laboratory-scaled OPVs, there has also been more attention directed towards using printing and coating methods that are compatible with large-scale fabrication. Though large-area (>100 cm2) OPVs have reached an efficiency of 15%, this is still behind that of laboratory-scale OPVs. There also needs to be more focus on determining strategies for improving the lifetime of OPVs that are suitable for scalable manufacturing, as well as methods for reducing material and manufacturing costs. In this paper, we compare several printing and coating methods that are employed to fabricate OPVs, with the main focus towards the deposition of the active layer. This includes a comparison of performances at laboratory (<1 cm2), small (1-10 cm2), medium (10-100 cm2), and large (>100 cm2) active area fabrications, encompassing devices that use scalable printing and coating methods for only the active layer, as well as "fully printed/coated" devices. The article also compares the research focus of each of the printing and coating techniques and predicts the general direction that scalable and large-scale OPVs will head towards.

Insufficient thermal stability of vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) electrolytes at elevated temperatures (>40 °C) remains a challenge in the development and commercialization of this technology, which otherwise presents a broad range of technological advantages for the long-term storage of intermittent renewable energy. Herein, a new concept of combined additives is presented, which significantly increases thermal stability of the battery, enabling safe operation to the highest temperature (50 °C) tested to date. This is achieved by combining two chemically distinct additives-inorganic ammonium phosphate and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) surfactant, which collectively decelerate both protonation and agglomeration of the oxo-vanadium species in solution and thereby significantly suppress detrimental formation of precipitates. Specifically, the precipitation rate is reduced by nearly 75% under static conditions at 50° C. This improvement is reflected in the robust operation of a complete VRFB device for over 300 h of continuous operation at 50 °C, achieving an impressive 83% voltage efficiency at 100 mA cm-2 current density, with no precipitation detected in either the electrode/flow-frame or electrolyte tank.

Metallic lithium (Li) is the most attractive anode for Li batteries because it holds the highest theoretical specific capacity (3860 mA h g-1) and the lowest redox potential (-3.040 V vs SHE). However, the poor interface stability of the Li anode, which is caused by the high reactivity and dendrite formation of metallic Li upon cycling, leads to undesired electrochemical performance and safety issues. While two-dimensional boron nitride (BN) nanosheets have been utilized as an interfacial layer, the mechanism on how they stabilize the Li-electrolyte interface remains elusive. Here, we show how BN nanosheet interlayers suppress Li dendrite formation, enhance Li ion transport kinetics, facilitate Li deposition, and reduce electrolyte decomposition. We show through both simulation and experimental data that the desolvation process of a solvated Li ion within the interlayer nanochannels kinetically favors Li deposition. This process enables long cycling stability, reduced voltage polarization, improved interface stability, and negligible volume expansion. Their application as an interfacial layer in symmetric cells and full cells that display significantly improved electrochemical properties is also demonstrated. The knowledge gained in this study provides both critical insights and practical guidelines for designing a Li metal anode with significantly improved performance.

Employing neutral impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (NICISS), we have directly measured the concentration depth profiles (CDPs) of various monovalent ions at the vapor-formamide interface. NICISS provides CDPs of individual ions by measuring the energy loss of neutral helium atoms backscattered from the solution interface. CDPs at the vapor-formamide interface of Cl-, Br-, I-, Na+, K+, and Cs+ are measured and compared to elucidate the interfacial specific ion trends. We report a reverse Hofmeister series in the presence of inorganic ions (anion and cation) at the vapor-formamide interface relative to the water-vapor interface, and the CDPs are found to be independent of the counterion for most ions studied. Thus, ions at the surface of formamide follow a "Hofmeister paradigm" where the counterion does not impact the ion series. These specific ion trends are complemented with surface tension and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) measurements on formamide electrolyte solutions.

Chromium oxide (Cr2O3) is a beneficial metal oxide used to prevent the backward reaction in photocatalytic water splitting. The present work investigates the stability, oxidation state, and the bulk and surface electronic structure of Cr-oxide photodeposited onto P25, BaLa4Ti4O15, and Al:SrTiO3 particles as a function of the annealing process. The oxidation state of the Cr-oxide layer as deposited is found to be Cr2O3 on the surface of P25 and Al:SrTiO3 particles and Cr(OH)3 on BaLa4Ti4O15. After annealing at 600 °C, for P25 (a mixture of rutile and anatase TiO2), the Cr2O3 layer diffuses into the anatase phase but remains at the surface of the rutile phase. For BaLa4Ti4O15, Cr(OH)3 converts to Cr2O3 upon annealing and diffuses slightly into the particles. However, for Al:SrTiO3, the Cr2O3 remains stable at the surface of the particles. The diffusion here is due to the strong metal-support interaction effect. In addition, some of the Cr2O3 on the P25, BaLa4Ti4O15, and Al:SrTiO3 particles is reduced to metallic Cr after annealing. The effect of Cr2O3 formation and diffusion into the bulk on the surface and bulk band gaps is investigated with electronic spectroscopy, electron diffraction, DRS, and high-resolution imaging. The implications of the stability and diffusion of Cr2O3 for photocatalytic water splitting are discussed.

RESUMO

We estimate the effect of local economic growth on infant mortality. We use geo-referenced data for non-migrating mothers from 46 developing countries and a total of 128 DHS survey rounds and combine it with nighttime luminosity data at a granular level. Using mother fixed effects we show that an increase in local economic activity significantly reduces the probability that the same mother loses a child before its first birthday.

We investigated the effect of adding p-anisaldehyde (AA) solvent to the ink containing poly[[2,60-4,8-di(5-ethylhexylthienyl)benzo[1,2-b:3,3-b]dithiophene][3-fluoro-2[(2-ethylhexyl)carbonyl]thieno[3,4-b]thiophenediyl]](PTB7-Th) and 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:20,30-d0]-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b0]-dithiophene(ITIC) on the morphology of the active layer. The present study focuses on determining the effect of the additive on the compositions at the surface of the PTB7-Th: ITIC composite and its morphology, forming one side of the interface of the blend with the MoOX electrode, and the influence of the structural change on the performance of devices. Studies of device performance show that the addition of the additive AA leads to an improvement in device performance. Upon the addition of AA, the concentration of PTB7-Th at the surface of the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) increases, causing an increase in surface roughness of the surface of the BHJ. This finding contributes to an understanding of the interaction between the donor material and high work function electrode/interface material. The implications for the interface are discussed.

Characterization of bidimensional polymeric films at the air-water interface in the Langmuir trough, despite being a recurrent topic, usually refers to films of already formed polymeric materials, with very scarce reports on direct polymerization at the air-water interface. In the present work, we studied the photo-polymerization of stearyl methacrylate directly at the air-water interface under a nitrogen atmosphere, with the radical initiator solubilized in the aqueous phase. Two-dimensional (2D) polymerization was monitored by measuring the pressure-area isotherm at different irradiation times. The polymerization leads to a film with an isotherm different from that observed for the monomer, where the surface pressure is directly related to the irradiation time. The shape of this isotherm confirms the presence of a compressed liquid phase, where a higher order can be attained as a consequence of stronger packing forces involving polymer chains. The presence of inter-chain interactions allows rearrangements on the surface of the subphase, and even before the collapse a dense 2D ordering (with a solid phase-like behavior) can be observed. We present a new one-step, solvent-free procedure to obtain a photo-polymeric film directly at the air-water interface, which can be transferred to a solid surface by the Langmuir-Blodgett method, allowing film preparation of controlled thickness. Films were characterized by measuring properties such as thickness, roughness, and hydrophobicity and comparing them with films obtained from a conventional polymer. We report the differences between the interfacial behavior of amphiphilic molecules and nanomaterials such as films obtained by photo-polymerization, PSMA, directly on the air-water interface.

Namibia is among 30 countries with a high burden of tuberculosis (TB), with an estimated incidence of 460 per 100,000 population and around 800 new multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB cases per year. Still, data on the transmission and evolution of drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (Mtbc) strains are not available. Whole-genome sequencing data of 136 rifampicin-resistant (RIFr) Mtbc strains obtained from 2016 to 2018 were used for phylogenetic classification, resistance prediction, and cluster analysis and linked with phenotypic drug susceptibility testing (pDST) data. Roughly 50% of the strains investigated were resistant to all first-line drugs. Furthermore, 13% of the MDR Mtbc strains were already pre-extensively drug resistant (pre-XDR). The cluster rates were high, at 74.6% among MDR and 85% among pre-XDR strains. A significant proportion of strains had borderline resistance-conferring mutations, e.g., inhA promoter mutations or rpoB L430P. Accordingly, 25% of the RIFr strains tested susceptible by pDST. Finally, we determined a potentially new bedaquiline resistance mutation (Rv0678 D88G) occurring in two independent clusters. High rates of resistance to first-line drugs in line with emerging pre-XDR and likely bedaquiline resistance linked with the ongoing recent transmission of MDR Mtbc clones underline the urgent need for the implementation of interventions that allow rapid diagnostics to break MDR TB transmission chains in the country. A borderline RIFr mutation in the dominant outbreak strain causing discrepancies between phenotypic and genotypic resistance testing results may require breakpoint adjustments but also may allow individualized regimens with high-dose treatment. IMPORTANCE The transmission of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) is a major problem for global TB control. Using genome sequencing, we showed that 13% of the multidrug-resistant (MDR) M. tuberculosis complex strains from Namibia are already pre-extensively drug resistant (pre-XDR), which is substantial in an African setting. Our data also indicate that the ongoing transmission of MDR and pre-XDR strains contributes significantly to the problem. In contrast to other settings with higher rates of drug resistance, we found a high proportion of strains having so-called borderline low-level resistance mutations, e.g., inhA promoter mutations or rpoB L430P. This led to the misclassification of 25% of the rifampicin-resistant strains as susceptible by phenotypic drug susceptibility testing. This observation potentially allows individualized regimens with high-dose treatment as a potential option for patients with few treatment options. We also found a potentially new bedaquiline resistance mutation in rv0678.

Radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering allows the fabrication of TiO2 films with high purity, reliable control of film thickness, and uniform morphology. In the present study, the change in surface roughness upon heating two different thicknesses of RF sputter-deposited TiO2 films was investigated. As a measure of the process of the change in surface morphology, chemically -synthesised phosphine-protected Au9 clusters covered by a photodeposited CrOx layer were used as a probe. Subsequent to the deposition of the Au9 clusters and the CrOx layer, samples were heated to 200 ℃ to remove the triphenylphosphine ligands from the Au9 cluster. After heating, the thick TiO2 film was found to be mobile, in contrast to the thin TiO2 film. The influence of the mobility of the TiO2 films on the Au9 clusters was investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that the high mobility of the thick TiO2 film after heating leads to a significant agglomeration of the Au9 clusters, even when protected by the CrOx layer. The thin TiO2 film has a much lower mobility when being heated, resulting in only minor agglomeration of the Au9 clusters covered with the CrOx layer.

Pyogenic lung abscesses represent a pathological entity with a high mortality rate if left untreated. Most patients respond well to intravenous antibiotics. Following the failure of conservative measures, invasive measures such as open-surgical procedures are required. Minimally-invasive options such as percutaneous catheter drainage of parenchymal lung abscesses, mainly if the respiratory reserve is limited or where the baseline functional status is poor, are also considered viable options. Pyogenic lung abscesses are necrotic cavitary lesions of the lung parenchyma and are often considered to be in the spectrum of anaerobic pleuropulmonary diseases. In this case report, we report on a 33-year-old female who presented with a 3-week history of cough, increasing breathlessness and right-sided pleurisy. She was diagnosed with pyogenic lung abscess and started on intravenous antibiotics. The abscess was drained using a pigtail catheter guided with a bedside ultrasonography.

Treatment of tuberculosis requires rapid information about Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) drug susceptibility to ensure effective therapy and optimal outcomes. At the tuberculosis referral hospital in Windhoek, Namibia, a country of high tuberculosis incidence, we evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of a line-probe-assay (LPA), GenID, for the molecular diagnosis of Mtb infection and drug resistance in patients with suspected tuberculosis (cohort 1) and confirmed rifampin (RIF)-resistant tuberculosis (cohort 2). GenID test results were compared to Xpert MTB/RIF and/or Mtb culture and antimicrobial suceptibilty testing. GenID LPA was applied to 79 and 55 samples from patients in cohort 1 and cohort 2, respectively. The overall sensitivity of GenID LPA for the detection of Mtb DNA in sputum from patients with detectable and undetectable acid-fast bacilli by sputum smear microscopy was 93.3% (56/60; 95% confidence interval = 83.8-98.2) and 22.7% (5/22; 7.8-45.4). The sensitivity/specificity for the detection of drug resistance was 84.2% (32/38; 68.7-94.0)/100% (19/19; 82.4-100.0) for RIF, 89.7% (26/29; 72.6-97.8)/91.7% (22/24; 73.0-99.0) for isoniazid, and 85.7% (6/7; 42.1-99.6)/94.7% (18/19; 74.0-99.9) for fluoroquinolones; 23.6% of tests for second-line injectable resistance were invalid despite repeat testing. The diagnosis of tuberculosis by detection of Mtb DNA in sputum by GenID LPA depends strongly on the detection of acid-fast bacilli in sputum specimen. Prediction of drug resistance by GenID did not reach the World Health Organization (WHO) target product profile. IMPORTANCE Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) drug-resistance detection is crucial for successful control of tuberculosis. Line-probe assays (LPA) are frequently used to detect resistance to rifampin, isoniazid, fluoroquinolones (FQs), and second-line injectables (SLIs). GenID RIF/isoniazid (INH), FQ, and SLI LPA have not been widely tested and used so far. This study tested the diagnostic performance of the GenID LPA in a high-incidence TB/HIV, real-world setting in Namibia. The LPA demonstrates only an acceptable diagnostic performance for Mtb and drug-resistance detection. The diagnostic sensitivity and specificity fall short of the WHO suggested target product profiles for LPA.

Background: Associations between height, cancer risk and worse outcome have been reported for several cancers including breast cancer. We hypothesized that in breast cancer clinical trials, tall women should be overrepresented and might have worse prognosis. Methods: Data of 4,935 women, included from 1990 to 2010 in 5 trials of the Austrian Breast and Colorectal Cancer Study Group (ABCSG), were analyzed retrospectively. The primary objective was to determine differences in height distribution between the ABCSG cohort and the Austrian female population according to a cross-sectional health survey conducted by the Austrian Statistic Center in 2006 and 2007. Secondary endpoints were disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in different height classes and differences of body mass index (BMI) distribution. Results: Breast cancer patients in the ABCSG cohort were only slightly but statistically significantly smaller compared to unselected Austrian adult females (mean 164.3 vs. 164.8 cm; p < 0.0001) and significantly more patients were seen in the lower body height class (50 vs. 46%; p < 0.0001) when using the median as a cutoff. However, after adjustment for age, the difference in body height between the two cohorts was no longer significant (p = 0.089). DFS and OS in the two upper height groups (≥170 cm) compared to the two lowest height groups (<160 cm) was not significantly different (5-year DFS: 84.7 vs. 83.0%; HR 0.91, 95% CI 0.73-1.13, p = 0.379; 5-year OS: 94.8 vs. 91.7%; HR 0.74, 95% CI 0.55-1.00, p = 0.051). The BMI of ABCSG patients was significantly higher than in the reference population (mean BMI 24.64 vs. 23.96; p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Our results do not confirm previous findings that greater body height is associated with a higher breast cancer risk and worse outcome.

Specific ion effects (SIE), encompassing the Hofmeister Series, have been known for more than 130 years since Hofmeister and Lewith's foundational work. SIEs are ubiquitous and are observed across the medical, biological, chemical and industrial sciences. Nevertheless, no general predictive theory has yet been able to explain ion specificity across these fields; it remains impossible to predict when, how, and to what magnitude, a SIE will be observed. In part, this is due to the complexity of real systems in which ions, counterions, solvents and cosolutes all play varying roles, which give rise to anomalies and reversals in anticipated SIEs. Herein we review the historical explanations for SIE in water and the key ion properties that have been attributed to them. Systems where the Hofmeister series is perturbed or reversed are explored, as is the behaviour of ions at the liquid-vapour interface. We discuss SIEs in mixed electrolytes, nonaqueous solvents, and in highly concentrated electrolyte solutions - exciting frontiers in this field with particular relevance to biological and electrochemical applications. We conclude the perspective by summarising the challenges and opportunities facing this SIE research that highlight potential pathways towards a general predictive theory of SIE.

Sputtered NiO x (sp-NiO x ) is a preferred hole transporting material for perovskite solar cells because of its hole mobility, ease of manufacturability, good stability, and suitable Fermi level for hole extraction. However, uncontrolled defects in sp-NiO x can limit the efficiency of solar cells fabricated with this hole transporting layer. An interfacial layer has been proposed to modify the sp-NiO x /perovskite interface, which can contribute to improving the crystallinity of the perovskite film. Herein, a 2-(3,6-dimethoxy-9H-carbazol-9-yl)ethyl]phosphonic acid (MeO-2PACz) self-assembled monolayer was used to modify an sp-NiO x surface. We found that the MeO-2PACz interlayer improves the quality of the perovskite film due to an enlarged domain size, reduced charge recombination at the sp-NiO x /perovskite interface, and passivation of the defects in sp-NiO x surfaces. In addition, the band tail states are also reduced, as indicated by photothermal deflection spectroscopy, which thus indicates a reduction in defect levels. The overall outcome is an improvement in the device efficiency from 11.9% to 17.2% due to the modified sp-NiO x /perovskite interface, with an active area of 1 cm2 (certified efficiency of 16.25%). On the basis of these results, the interfacial engineering of the electronic properties of sp-NiO x /MeO-2PACz/perovskite is discussed in relation to the improved device performance.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate whether (1) psychological and social indicators influence survival in patients diagnosed with cancer or haematologic malignancies when important biological aspects are controlled for, (2) psychological, social and biological indicators can be utilised to design one collated index for survival, usable in clinical practice to identify patients at risk of shorter survival and to improve personalised healthcare provision. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 2263 patients with cancer or haematologic malignancies participated. We analysed 15 biological, psychological and social indicators as risk factors for survival with a Cox proportional hazards model. Indicators significantly associated with survival were combined to compute models for the identification of patient groups with different risks of death. The training sample contained 1122 patients. Validation samples included the remaining 1141 patients, the total sample, as well as groups with different cancer entities. RESULTS: Five indicators were found to significantly impact survival: Cancer site (HR: 3.56), metastatic disease (HR: 1.88), symptoms of depression (HR: 1.34), female sex (HR: 0.73) and anaemia (HR: 0.48). Combining these indicators to a model, we developed the Cancer Survival Index, identifying three distinct groups of patients with estimated survival times of 47.2 months, 141 months and 198.2 months (p < 0.001). Post hoc analysis of the influence of depression on survival showed a mediating effect of the following four factors, related to both depression and survival: previous psychiatric conditions, employment status, metastatic disease and haemoglobin levels. CONCLUSIONS: Psychosocial and biological factors impact survival in various malignancies and can be utilised jointly to compute an index for estimating the survival of each patient individually-the Cancer Survival Index.

Atomically precise gold clusters are highly desirable due to their well-defined structure which allows the study of structure-property relationships. In addition, they have potential in technological applications such as nanoscale catalysis. The structural, chemical, electronic, and optical properties of ligated gold clusters are strongly defined by the metal-ligand interaction and type of ligands. This critical feature renders gold-phosphine clusters unique and distinct from other ligand-protected gold clusters. The use of multidentate phosphines enables preparation of varying core sizes and exotic structures beyond regular polyhedrons. Weak gold-phosphorous (Au-P) bonding is advantageous for ligand exchange and removal for specific applications, such as catalysis, without agglomeration. The aim of this review is to provide a unified view of gold-phosphine clusters and to present an in-depth discussion on recent advances and key developments for these clusters. This review features the unique chemistry, structural, electronic, and optical properties of gold-phosphine clusters. Advanced characterization techniques, including synchrotron-based spectroscopy, have unraveled substantial effects of Au-P interaction on the composition-, structure-, and size-dependent properties. State-of-the-art theoretical calculations that reveal insights into experimental findings are also discussed. Finally, a discussion of the application of gold-phosphine clusters in catalysis is presented.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based antiemetic guidelines offer predominantly consistent recommendations for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) prophylaxis. However, studies suggest that adherence to these recommendations is suboptimal. We explored inconsistencies between clinical practice and guideline-recommended treatment with a registry evaluating the effect of guideline-consistent CINV prophylaxis (GCCP) on patient outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a prospective, non-interventional, multicentre study. The primary objective was to assess the overall (Days 1-5) complete response (CR: no emesis/no rescue use) rates in patients who received GCCP or guideline-inconsistent CINV prophylaxis (GICP) using diaries for 5 days following chemotherapy. Cycle 1 results are presented in patients who received either (1) anthracycline/cyclophosphamide (AC) highly emetogenic chemotherapy (HEC), non-AC HEC or carboplatin, with GCCP for all these groups consisting of prophylaxis with an NK1 receptor antagonist (RA), 5-HT3RA and dexamethasone prior to chemotherapy or (2) moderately emetogenic chemotherapy (MEC), with GCCP consisting of a 5-HT3RA and dexamethasone prior to chemotherapy as per MASCC/ESMO 2016 guidelines, in place at the time of the study. RESULTS: 1,089 patients were part of the cycle 1 efficacy evaluation. Overall GCCP was 23%. CR rates were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in patients receiving GCCP (62.2%) versus GICP (52.6%) in the overall population, as well as in the subsets of patients receiving AC/non-AC HEC (60.2% versus 47.8%), MEC (73.8% versus 57.8%) and in those non-naïve to the chemotherapy received (65.9% versus 53.8%). No impact on daily living due to CINV (FLIE assessment) was observed in 43.4% patients receiving GCCP versus 28.5% GICP (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Consistent with prior studies, GCCP was very low; a significant benefit of almost 10% improved prevention of CINV was observed with GCCP. As per MASCC/ESMO guidelines, such an absolute difference should be practice changing. Comprehensive multifaceted strategies are needed to achieve better adherence to antiemetic guidelines.

The properties of semiconductor surfaces can be modified by the deposition of metal clusters consisting of a few atoms. The properties of metal clusters and of cluster-modified surfaces depend on the number of atoms forming the clusters. Deposition of clusters with a monodisperse size distribution thus allows tailoring of the surface properties for technical applications. However, it is a challenge to retain the size of the clusters after their deposition due to the tendency of the clusters to agglomerate. The agglomeration can be inhibited by covering the metal cluster modified surface with a thin metal oxide overlayer. In the present work, phosphine-protected Au clusters, Au9(PPh3)8(NO3)3, were deposited onto RF-sputter deposited TiO2 films and subsequently covered with a Cr2O3 film only a few monolayers thick. The samples were then heated to 200 °C to remove the phosphine ligands, which is a lower temperature than that required to remove thiolate ligands from Au clusters. It was found that the Cr2O3 covering layer inhibited cluster agglomeration at an Au cluster coverage of 0.6% of a monolayer. When no protecting Cr2O3 layer was present, the clusters were found to agglomerate to a large degree on the TiO2 surface.
