RESUMO

AIM: This study aimed to determine the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of male nurses towards human papillomavirus (HPV) and HPV vaccination and to examine whether knowledge about the HPV vaccine affects attitudes and beliefs about HPV vaccines. BACKGROUND: HPV is responsible for ≈5% of all cancers worldwide. Therefore, vaccination against HPV is recommended to prevent HPV infections and HPV-related cancers in men and women. METHODS: The study group included 383 male nurses who were asked to complete online questionnaires. The data were collected using the following tools: a sociodeomographical characteristics form, the Human Papillomavirus Knowledge Scale (HPVKS), and The Carolina HPV Immunization Attitudes and Beliefs Scale (CHIAS). RESULTS: It was determined that the general HPV knowledge of the male nurses participating in the study was at a moderate level, but their knowledge of HPV screening test, HPV vaccination, and current HPV vaccination programmes were at a low level. Male nurses' HPV vaccination rates were relatively low, and most of them did not intend to be vaccinated. In addition, CHIAS Attitudes and Beliefs scores of the male nurses were at an average level and HPV knowledge affected the attitudes and beliefs of the nurses. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrate an opportunity to improve information and awareness about HPV and vaccines by nursing education.

RESUMO

AIMS: This study aims to determine correlations between childhood trauma and depression, anxiety, and stress levels in nurses. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted among nurses in Turkey from August to September 2022. A total of 395 nurses were included in the study. Data were collected through an online survey using a personal information form, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-28), and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS 21). RESULTS: The mean score of the CTQ-28 total scale was 51.6, and emotional neglect was the most common type of abuse. The prevalence of moderate-to-extremely severe depression, anxiety, and stress was 34.7 %, 42.2 %, and 18.3 %, respectively. Emotional abuse and emotional neglect subscales of the CTQ were independently related to all three DASS subscale scores. CONCLUSION: This study revealed that the emotional abuse and neglect experienced in childhood are related to the nurses' current stress, anxiety, and depression levels.

RESUMO

The present study aimed to determine the level of childhood traumas among nursing students and to identify the factors associated with these traumas. This was a cross-sectional study, including 1810 nursing students studying at the nursing department of any university in Turkey. The data were collected using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and an online questionnaire consisting of questions related to sociodemographic characteristics. The results of these questionnaires indicated that the level of childhood traumas was low among nursing students and that they had experienced emotional neglect more frequently than sexual abuse. Moreover, this study identified possible factors associated with childhood trauma among these students. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Nursing students with a history of trauma or current trauma can be guided to participate in activities that improve their resilience. In addition, specific courses may be included in the nursing education curriculum to increase the awareness on this topic among these students.

RESUMO

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is one of the most effective public health measures for preventing HPV-related cancers and other diseases. However, vaccination coverage is not at the desired level, especially among men. In this context, we aimed to determine HPV vaccination rates, barriers, and some related demographic and personal factors among male university students in Turkey. We shared an online questionnaire prepared by the authors in line with the relevant literature on social media platforms and included 1723 male university students in this cross-sectional study. Only 4.9% of the students stated that they were vaccinated against HPV, and the most important obstacle to vaccination was not knowing when to be vaccinated (49.5%). Additionally, marital status, sexual orientation, chronic diseases, family history of cervical cancer, and having heard of HPV were significant predictors of HPV vaccination.

RESUMO

AIM: This study was designed to determine the prevalence of domestic violence against older adults and the associated risk factors in Çanakkale, Turkey. METHODS: A cross-sectional, population-based study was carried out, including 1230 individuals aged ≥65 years living in the city of Çanakkale, Turkey. The population of the study consisted of 73 367 individuals aged ≥65 years, living in Çanakkale. Sample selection was made with the one-step cluster sampling method. The data were collected by face-to-face interview. The study was approved by the local ethics committee, and written consent was taken from the participants. RESULTS: Of the participants, 4.1% had experienced physical violence, 2.5% were subjected to sexual abuse, 23.5% had undergone psychological violence and 12.2% had a history of economic violence. The exposure to any of the given violence types was 28.5%. Risk factors related to violence were being married, having children, educated partner, lack of economic independence, poor self-perceived health, administration of medications by others, feeling lonely, dissatisfaction with life, poor perception of family relations and not participating in family decisions. CONCLUSIONS: These results show that violence against older adults is a significant problem in a city in western Turkey. Therefore, an in-depth evaluation of the determined risk factors related to violence and actions for its prevention are warranted. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2020; 20: 66-71.
