RESUMO

We present a full performance characterization of a solid state pulse picker for hard x-ray pulses at synchrotrons. The device is called WaveGate. Specifically, we quantify its efficiency (>30 %), timing capabilities (switching times between 100 ns and ms), on-off contrast (>104) and influence on the coherence properties of the incident x-ray beam. In addition, we discuss the implementation of the WaveGate in an optical pump - x-ray probe setup. Even if single pulse selection is performed by external detector gating, the WaveGate drastically increases the efficiency of a measurement. Finally, we introduce advanced timing schemes that can be realized by modulating the time structure of the synchrotron beam.

RESUMO

A new concept for temporal gating of synchrotron X-ray pulses based on laser-induced thermal transient gratings is presented. First experimental tests of the concept yield a diffraction efficiency of 0.18%; however, the calculations indicate a theoretical efficiency and contrast of >30% and 10-5, respectively. The full efficiency of the pulse picker has not been reached yet due to a long-range thermal deformation of the sample after absorption of the excitation laser. This method can be implemented in a broad spectral range (100 eV to 20 keV) and is only minimally invasive to an existing setup.

RESUMO

X-ray reflectivity measurements of femtosecond laser-induced transient gratings (TG) are applied to demonstrate the spatiotemporal coherent control of thermally induced surface deformations on ultrafast time scales. Using grazing incidence x-ray diffraction we unambiguously measure the amplitude of transient surface deformations with sub-Å resolution. Understanding the dynamics of femtosecond TG excitations in terms of superposition of acoustic and thermal gratings makes it possible to develop new ways of coherent control in x-ray diffraction experiments. Being the dominant source of TG signal, the long-living thermal grating with spatial period Λ can be canceled by a second, time-delayed TG excitation shifted by Λ/2. The ultimate speed limits of such an ultrafast x-ray shutter are inferred from the detailed analysis of thermal and acoustic dynamics in TG experiments.

Phonons are often regarded as delocalized quasiparticles with certain energy and momentum. The anharmonic interaction of phonons determines macroscopic properties of the solid, such as thermal expansion or thermal conductivity, and a detailed understanding becomes increasingly important for functional nanostructures. Although phonon-phonon scattering processes depicted in simple wave-vector diagrams are the basis of theories describing these macroscopic phenomena, experiments directly accessing these coupling channels are scarce. We synthesize monochromatic acoustic phonon wave packets with only a few cycles to introduce nonlinear phononics as the acoustic counterpart to nonlinear optics. Control of the wave vector, bandwidth, and consequently spatial extent of the phonon wave packets allows us to observe nonlinear phonon interaction, in particular, second harmonic generation, in real time by wave-vector-sensitive Brillouin scattering with x-rays and optical photons.

RESUMO

We monitor how destructive interference of undesired phonon frequency components shapes a quasi-monochromatic hypersound wavepacket spectrum during its local real-time preparation by a nanometric transducer and follow the subsequent decay by nonlinear coupling. We prove each frequency component of an optical supercontinuum probe to be sensitive to one particular phonon wavevector in bulk material and cross-check this by ultrafast x-ray diffraction experiments with direct access to the lattice dynamics. Establishing reliable experimental techniques with direct access to the transient spectrum of the excitation is crucial for the interpretation in strongly nonlinear regimes, such as soliton formation.

We investigate coherent phonon propagation in a thin film of ferroelectric PbZr(0.2)Ti(0.8)O(3) (PZT) by ultrafast x-ray diffraction experiments, which are analyzed as time-resolved reciprocal space mapping in order to observe the in- and out-of-plane structural dynamics, simultaneously. The mosaic structure of the PZT leads to a coupling of the excited out-of-plane expansion to in-plane lattice dynamics on a picosecond time scale, which is not observed for out-of-plane compression.

We present a setup for ultrafast x-ray diffraction (UXRD) based at the storage ring BESSY II, in particular, a pump laser that excites the sample using 250 fs laser-pulses at repetition rates ranging from 208 kHz to 1.25 MHz. We discuss issues connected to the high heat-load and spatio-temporal alignment strategies in the context of a UXRD experiment at high repetition rates. The spatial overlap between laser pump and x-ray probe pulse is obtained with 10 µm precision and transient lattice changes can be recorded with an accuracy of δa/a(0) = 10(-6). We also compare time-resolved x-ray diffraction signals from a laser excited LSMO/STO superlattice with phonon dynamics simulations. From the analysis we determine the x-ray pulse duration to 120 ps in standard operation mode and below 10 ps in low-α mode.

RESUMO

We present an experimental setup of a laser-driven x-ray plasma source for femtosecond x-ray diffraction. Different normalization schemes accounting for x-ray source intensity fluctuations are discussed in detail. We apply these schemes to measure the temporal evolution of Bragg peak intensities of perovskite superlattices after ultrafast laser excitation.

RESUMO

Electrons in bulk n-doped GaAs at a lattice temperature of 300 K are driven by ultrashort high-field transients of up to 300 kV/cm in the terahertz frequency range. In the lowest conduction band the carriers show coherent ballistic motion, which is detected via the THz field emitted by them. This partial Bloch oscillation is reproduced by a quantum-kinetic theory of coherent transport on ultrafast time scales.

A charged particle modifies the structure of the surrounding medium: examples include a proton in ice, an ion in a DNA molecule, an electron at an interface, or an electron in an organic or inorganic crystal. In turn, the medium acts back on the particle. In a polar or ionic solid, a free electron distorts the crystal lattice, displacing the atoms from their equilibrium positions. The electron, when considered together with its surrounding lattice distortion, is a single quasiparticle, known as the Fröhlich polaron. The basic properties of polarons and their drift motion in a weak electric field are well known. However, their nonlinear high-field properties--relevant for transport on nanometre length and ultrashort timescales--are not understood. Here we show that a high electric field in the terahertz range drives the polaron in a GaAs crystal into a highly nonlinear regime where, in addition to the drift motion, the electron is impulsively moved away from the centre of the surrounding lattice distortion. In this way, coherent lattice vibrations (phonons) and concomitant drift velocity oscillations are induced that persist for several hundred femtoseconds. They modulate the optical response at infrared frequencies between absorption and stimulated emission. Such quantum coherent processes directly affect high-frequency transport in nanostructures and may be exploited in novel terahertz-driven optical modulators and switches.

Excitation of an n-type GaAs layer by intense ultrashort terahertz pulses causes coherent emission at 2 THz. Phase-resolved nonlinear propagation experiments show a picosecond decay of the emitted field, despite the ultrafast carrier-carrier scattering at a sample temperature of 300 K. While the linear THz response is in agreement with the Drude response of free electrons, the nonlinear response is dominated by the super-radiant decay of optically inverted impurity transitions. A quantum mechanical discrete state model using the potential of the disordered impurities accounts for all experimental observations.

Single-cycle terahertz (THz) transients in the frequency range 0.3-7 THz with electric-field amplitudes of more than 400 kV/cm are generated by four-wave mixing of the fundamental and the second harmonic of 25 fs pulses from a Ti:sapphire amplifier in ionized air. These transients are fully characterized by electro-optic sampling with ZnTe and GaP crystals. One can tune the center frequency of the THz transients by varying the length of the incident pulse. The electric-field amplitude increases linearly with the incident pulse energy.

Phospholipid in vesicles and mixed micelles of (model) bile has been traced or quantitated (or both) by adding radioactively labeled phosphatidylcholine species. The question is whether these labeled species mix homogeneously with the phosphatidylcholine species mixture present, such that the label distribution reflects the already established mass partitioning of species. In this study, model bile containing egg yolk phosphatidylcholine was incubated with radioactive phosphatidylcholine species. Vesicle and mixed micelle fractions were separated by gel filtration. Radiochemical analysis of the species distribution confirmed chemical analysis: 1,2-di(14C)palmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine was enriched in the vesicles, the 1-palmitoyl-2-(14C)oleoyl species evenly distributed, and the 1-palmitoyl-2-(14C)linoleoyl species more expressed in mixed micelles. This indicates that the distribution of an added radioactive phosphatidylcholine species represents the vesicle/mixed micelle distribution of that particular phosphatidylcholine species. Consequently, the label distribution of a particular added radioactive phosphatidylcholine species can be used to calculate the vesicle/mixed micelle partitioning of total phosphatidylcholine only after it has been established that the radioactive species reaches the same partitioning as total phosphatidylcholine.

In dogs, hypertrophic gastritis, which resembles Ménétrier's disease in man, has been demonstrated to be part of a hereditary syndrome called familial stomatocytosis-hypertrophic gastritis. In addition to hypertrophic gastritis, affected dogs exhibit abnormal blood phospholipid composition. Phospholipids may play a role in maintaining gastric mucosal integrity, and this may be compromised in gastritis. The question arises whether the differences in blood phospholipids may result from a disorder that might also be revealed in the composition of gastric mucosal phospholipids. We analysed the phospholipid composition of gastric mucosa from four dogs with familial stomatocytosis-hypertrophic gastritis. The general phospholipid composition and the molecular composition of phosphatidylcholine from mucosal tissue in the corpus of the stomach where hypertrophic gastritis was evident were not different from that of the antrum, where the tissue was normal. These results do not corroborate a relation between the gastric mucosal phospholipid composition and hypertrophic gastritis.

RESUMO

Authors analyse the incidence, demographic relations and data of hospitalization of the home accidents. The significance of the home accidents is emphasized. It is stated that the home accident is the most frequent type of accidents and its ratio is increasing. The incidence was found 45 on 1000 inhabitants, the home accidents give nearly the half of all accidents and more than 1/3 of the hospitalized injured. Attention is called to the possibilities of unutilized possibilities of the prevention of home accidents.
