RESUMO

Functional silanes are multifaceted cross-linkers, compatibilizers, coupling agents, and surface modifiers. Herein, we present organofunctional polysiloxane building blocks that offer great versatility in terms of molecular weight, degree of condensation, and the choice and loading of organic substituent groups. The organofunctional polyethoxysilanes (funPEOS) are prepared in a one-pot, two-step process: synthesis of the PEOS carrier/substrate, followed by grafting a functional silane "shell", both based on condensation with acetic anhydride. The reaction was optimized at the lab scale and scaled up to a 7 L reactor. The acetylation, condensation, and hyperbranched structure of the carrier were confirmed by 29Si NMR, while 29Si-29Si 2D INADEQUATE NMR provides strong evidence for the grafting of functional silanes onto the carrier (Q-T coupling). IR, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy demonstrate that the functional groups remain intact. The molar mass can be tailored by stoichiometric control of the acetic anhydride to silane monomer ratio (M n 3500-20,000 g/mol). The compounds are stable organic liquids with a long shelf life. Selected applications are presented: scratch-resistant coatings with water contact angles of ∼90°, stable water emulsions, and surfactant-free, mesoporous silica foams.

We study the time evolution of mean values of quantum operators in a regime plagued by two difficulties: the smallness of ℏ and the presence of strong and ubiquitous classical chaos. While numerics become too computationally expensive for purely quantum calculations as ℏ→0, methods that take advantage of the smallness of ℏ-that is, semiclassical methods-suffer from both conceptual and practical difficulties in the deep chaotic regime. We implement an approach which addresses these conceptual problems, leading to a deeper understanding of the origin of the interference contributions to the operator's mean value. We show that in the deep chaotic regime our approach is capable of unprecedented accuracy, while a standard semiclassical method (the Herman-Kluk propagator) produces only numerical noise. Our work paves the way to the development and employment of more efficient and accurate methods for quantum simulations of systems with strongly chaotic classical limits.

The serial interval distribution is used to approximate the generation time distribution, an essential parameter to infer the transmissibility (${R}_t$) of an epidemic. However, serial interval distributions may change as an epidemic progresses. We examined detailed contact tracing data on laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Hong Kong during the five waves from January 2020 to July 2022. We reconstructed the transmission pairs and estimated time-varying effective serial interval distributions and factors associated with longer or shorter intervals. Finally, we assessed the biases in estimating transmissibility using constant serial interval distributions. We found clear temporal changes in mean serial interval estimates within each epidemic wave studied and across waves, with mean serial intervals ranged from 5.5 days (95% CrI: 4.4, 6.6) to 2.7 (95% CrI: 2.2, 3.2) days. The mean serial intervals shortened or lengthened over time, which were found to be closely associated with the temporal variation in COVID-19 case profiles and public health and social measures and could lead to the biases in predicting ${R}_t$. Accounting for the impact of these factors, the time-varying quantification of serial interval distributions could lead to improved estimation of ${R}_t$, and provide additional insights into the impact of public health measures on transmission.

Silicon's potential as a lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode is hindered by the reactivity of the lithium silicide (Li x Si) interface. This study introduces an innovative approach by alloying silicon with boron, creating boron/silicon (BSi) nanoparticles synthesized via plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. These nanoparticles exhibit altered electronic structures as evidenced by optical, structural, and chemical analysis. Integrated into LIB anodes, BSi demonstrates outstanding cycle stability, surpassing 1000 lithiation and delithiation cycles with minimal capacity fade or impedance growth. Detailed electrochemical and microscopic characterization reveal very little SEI growth through 1000 cycles, which suggests that electrolyte degradation is virtually nonexistent. This unconventional strategy offers a promising avenue for high-performance LIB anodes with the potential for rapid scale-up, marking a significant advancement in silicon anode technology.

This study aimed to assess the impact of protein supplementation and its interaction with calf sex (CS) on the performance, metabolism and physiology of pregnant beef cows. Fifty-two multiparous Zebu beef cows carrying female (n = 22) and male (n = 30) fetuses were used. Cows were individually housed from day 100 to 200 of gestation and randomly assigned to restricted (RES, n = 26) or supplemented (SUP, n = 26) groups. The RES cows were ad libitum fed a basal diet (corn silage + sugarcane bagasse + mineral mixture), achieving 5.5% crude protein (CP), while SUP cows received the same basal diet plus a protein supplement (40% CP, at 3.5 g/kg of body weight). All cows were fed the same diet during late gestation. Differences were declared at p < 0.05. No significant interaction between maternal nutrition and calf sex was found for maternal outcomes (p ≥ 0.34). The SUP treatment increased the total dry matter (DM) intake (p ≤ 0.01) by 32% and 19% at mid- and late-gestation respectively. The total tract digestibility of all diet components was improved by SUP treatment at day 200 of gestation (p ≤ 0.02), as well as the ruminal microbial CP production (p ≤ 0.01). The SUP treatment increased (p ≤ 0.03) the cows' body score condition, ribeye area, the average daily gain (ADG) of pregnant components (PREG; i.e., weight accretion of cows caused by pregnancy) and the ADG of maternal tissues (i.e., weight accretion discounting the gain related to gestation) in the mid-gestation. The SUP cows exhibited a lower maternal ADG (p < 0.01) compared to RES cows in late pregnancy. There was a 24% additional gain (p < 0.01) in the PREG components for SUP cows during late gestation, which in turn improved the calf birthweight (p = 0.05). The uterine arterial resistance and pulsatility indexes (p ≤ 0.01) at mid-gestation were greater for RES cows. In conclusion, protein supplementation during mid-gestation is an effective practice for improving maternal performance, growth of the gravid uterus and the offspring's birth weight.

Lead exposure has blighted communities across the United States (and the globe), with much of the burden resting on lower income communities, and communities of color. On 17 January 2024, the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) lowered the recommended screening level of lead in residential soils from 400 to 200 parts per million. Our analysis of tens of thousands of citizen-science collected soil samples from cities and communities around the US indicates that nearly one quarter of households may contain soil lead that exceed the new screening level. Extrapolating across the nation, that equates to nearly 30 million households needing to mitigate potential soil lead hazards, at a potential total cost of 290 billion to $1.2 trillion. We do not think this type of mitigation is feasible at the massive scale required and we have instead focused on a more immediate, far cheaper strategy: capping current soils with clean soils and/or mulch. At a fraction of the cost and labor of disruptive conventional soil mitigation, it yields immediate and potentially life-changing benefits for those living in these environments.

During Li-ion battery operation, (electro)chemical side reactions occur within the cell that can promote or degrade performance. These complex reactions produce byproducts in the solid, liquid, and gas phases. Studying byproducts in these three phases can help optimize battery lifetimes. To relate the measured gas-phase byproducts to species dissolved in the liquid-phase, equilibrium proprieties such as the Henry's law constants are required. The present work implements a pressure decay experiment to determine the thermodynamic equilibrium concentrations between the gas and liquid phases for ethylene (C2H4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), which are two gases commonly produced in Li-ion batteries, with an electrolyte of 1.2 M LiPF6 in 3:7 wt/wt ethylene carbonate/ethyl methyl carbonate and 3 wt % fluoroethylene carbonate (15:25:57:3 wt % total composition). The experimentally measured pressure decay curve is fit to an analytical dissolution model and extrapolated to predict the final pressure at equilibrium. The relationship between the partial pressures and concentration of dissolved gas in electrolyte at equilibrium is then used to determine Henry's law constants of 2.0 × 104 kPa for C2H4 and k CO2 = 1.1 × 104 kPa for CO2. These values are compared to Henry's law constants predicted from density functional theory and show good agreement within a factor of 3.

BACKGROUND: Some individuals may not retain adequate immunity against measles and rubella years after two doses of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination due to vaccine failure. This study aimed to investigate the rates of vaccine failure and seroconversion by administering an MMR booster to young adults. METHODS: We first assessed measles and rubella antibody levels using the Luminex multiplex assay, VIDAS IgG assay, and plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) among individuals aged 18-30 years old who had received two doses of MMR vaccine. Participants with low measles and/or rubella antibody levels as confirmed by VIDAS received an MMR booster. Antibody levels were measured at 1-month post-booster. RESULTS: Among 791 participants, the measles and rubella seroprevalence rates were 94.7% (95% CI: 92.9%-96.0%) and 97.3% (95% CI: 96.0%-98.3%), respectively. Lower seroprevalence rates were observed among older participants. 113 participants who received an MMR booster acquired higher measles and rubella antibody levels at 1-month post-booster compared to baseline. CONCLUSIONS: Although measles and rubella vaccine failures were observed among 5.3% and 2.7% of young adults, respectively, an MMR booster triggered a significant antibody response.

BACKGROUND: The General Adaptation Syndrome and the supercompensation Model are concepts widely applied in exercise science. Considering that fat is essential for tissue and the main energy source during continuous moderate-intensity exercise (MICE), the hypothesis arises that this type of effort may pay off after a detraining period. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate how different exercise models, followed by a period of detraining, affected adipose tissue cellularity in adult rats. Two specific models were examined: moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE) and high-intensity intermittent exercise (HIIT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is an experimental study in which rats were allocated into three groups: i) Continuous moderate-intensity exercise (MICE); ii) High-intensity intermittent exercise (HIIT); and iii) Control group (GC). Data were collected in three moments, namely: baseline values (T1), after which the animals exercised on a treadmill for eight weeks (T2) and then were followed up for four weeks after interruption of physical exercise (T3). For statistical analysis, a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed, with Tukey's post-hoc for the group (GC, MICE, or HIIT) and Bonferroni's for the moment (T1, T2 and T3). RESULTS: Regarding the periepididymal mass, GC showed an increase of 45% in T3 compared to T2. The HIIT and MICE groups had lower T3 values when compared to the CG. Comparing groups relative to the delta variation between T2 and T3 showed a difference in periepididymal mass (p = 0.012), with HIIT showing lower values than CG (p = 0.009). Analysis of the number of periepididymal adipocytes showed that HIIT (p < 0.001) and GC (p = 0.003) captured smaller numbers of cells than MICE. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, our findings demonstrated positive effects of both interventions (HIIT and MICE) in the control of periepididymal adipose tissue mass of adult rats after 4 weeks of exercise interruption, with less mass gain in HIIT. More adipocytes were observed in MICE compared to HIIT and GC. These results suggest that both exercise models helped control fat accumulation, even after detraining.

Eclampsia is one of the most dangerous complications of pregnancy and has a high incidence in developing countries. It is characterized by coma and the occurrence of generalized tonic-clonic seizures in pregnant women with hypertension. Deep bites on the tongue and other orofacial injuries have been described as consequences of these seizures. We present a case of death associated with eclampsia in which the bite during the seizure episode caused almost total amputation of an enlarged tongue (macroglossia). The medico-legal value of this finding and the situation due to antecedent pathological conditions and lack of routine screening in pregnant women who may migrate legally or illegally to give birth with better medical care are discussed.

Identifying edentulous victims in forensic contexts poses a significant challenge. It has been reported that having a denture to reproduce and compare Palatal Rugae (PR) patterns is crucial for identifying edentulous individuals, yet there are no validated protocols for conducting this procedure. In this study, a new method was developed and validated for plaster molding of the internal surface of upper dentures, along with a protocol involving focus-stacked photographs and reference scales. Thirty-eight edentulous subjects participated in the study, obtaining plaster models of the patients (PM), and their dentures (AM) were standardized. The AM/PM model was highlighted and photographed with ten shots in different z-focuses for each model, using standard lighting and aligning the position of the PR perpendicular to the photographic axis using tubular spirit levels and modeling clay. The images were processed using the stacking technique and analyzed by three observers through the proposed protocol using Adobe® Photoshop®. The results were analyzed based on the intra-observer and inter-observer agreement levels, with a 95% confidence interval. This study demonstrated high-precision intra-observer and inter-observer agreement (k = 1) in the matching of Palatal Rugae (PR) and maxillary morphology obtained from participants and their dentures. The protocol is simple, cost-effective, and precise. It enables standardization of the technique for obtaining plaster models, and the exposure of PR and photographic protocol minimizes the presence of artifacts in the images, thereby reducing the likelihood of errors and promoting the reproducibility of both the recording technique and the comparison of the PR.

CONTEXT: SARS-CoV-2, responsible for COVID-19, has led to over 500 million infections and more than 6 million deaths globally. There have been limited effective treatments available. The study aims to find a drug that can prevent the virus from entering host cells by targeting specific sites on the virus's spike protein. METHOD: We examined 13,397 compounds from the Malaria Box library against two specific sites on the spike protein: the receptor-binding domain (RBD) and a predicted cryptic pocket. Using virtual screening, molecular docking, molecular dynamics, and MMPBSA techniques, they evaluated the stability of two compounds. TCMDC-124223 showed high stability and binding energy in the RBD, while TCMDC-133766 had better binding energy in the cryptic pocket. The study also identified that the interacting residues are conserved, which is crucial for addressing various virus variants. The findings provide insights into the potential of small molecules as drugs against the spike protein.

This study evaluated the effects of broiler age (A) and levels of replacement (L) of control diet (CD) on the utilization of energy and nutrients of whole corn germ. 720 one-day-old broilers (b) were allocated at completely randomized design to six treatments and six replicates, in three assays: pre-starter (1-8 days, 10 b/cage), starter (15-22 days, 6 b/cage), and grower (28-35 days, 4 b/cage) phases. The treatments were: CD and four test diets (L): 100, 150, 200, 250, or 300 g kg-1 of the CD replaced by WCG levels. The data were adjusted to the response surface model. The stationary points for apparent energy metabolizable (AME) and AME corrected for nitrogen balance (AMEn) were: 4173 and 3591 kcal kg-1, respectively, and coefficients of gross energy (AMCGE), crude protein (AMCCP), dry matter (AMCDM), and ether extract (AMCEE) were: 49.3, 40.4, 72.6, and 61.3%, respectively; and Ileal digestibility coefficient of crude protein (IDCCP), dry matter (IDCDM), digestibility crude protein values (DCP), and digestibility dry matter value (DDM) were: 78.0, 57.96, 8.50, and 56.17%, respectively. The EP for AMEn was at 18 days of age, 28 g kg-1 WCG. There was a correlation between A and L on digestibility and metabolisability of nutrient's WCG.

Currently there is a lack of randomized trial data examining the use of the antiviral nirmatrelvir/ritonavir in paediatric patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. This target trial emulation study aims to address this gap by evaluating the use of nirmatrelvir/ritonavir in non-hospitalized paediatric patients aged 12-17 years with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection. Among paediatric patients diagnosed between 16th March 2022 and 5th February 2023, exposure was defined as outpatient nirmatrelvir/ritonavir treatment within 5 days of symptom onset or COVID-19 diagnosis. Primary outcome was 28 day all-cause mortality or all-cause hospitalization, while secondary outcomes were 28 day in-hospital disease progression, 28 day COVID-19-specific hospitalization, multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), acute liver injury, acute renal failure, and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Overall, 49,378 eligible paediatric patients were included. Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir treatment was associated with reduced 28 day all-cause hospitalization (absolute risk reduction = 0.23%, 95%CI = 0.19%-0.31%; relative risk = 0.66, 95%CI = 0.56-0.71). No events of mortality, in-hospital disease progression, or adverse clinical outcomes were observed among nirmatrelvir/ritonavir users. The findings confirmed the effectiveness of nirmatrelvir/ritonavir in reducing all-cause hospitalization risk among non-hospitalized pediatric patients with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection.

BACKGROUND: Healthy diet might protect against cardiometabolic diseases, but uncertainty exists about its definition and role in adolescence. METHOD: In a subset of Hong Kong's 'Children of 1997' birth cohort (n=2844 out of 8327), we prospectively examined sex-specific associations of food consumption and dietary pattern, proxied by the Global Diet Quality Score (GDQS) at~12.0 years, with cardiometabolic risk factors and metabolomics at~17.6 years. RESULT: Higher vegetable (-0.04 SD, 95% CIs: -0.09 to 0.00) and soy consumption (-0.05 SD, 95% CI: -0.09 to -0.01) were associated with lower waist-to-hip ratio. Higher fruit and vegetable consumption were associated with lower fasting glucose (p<0.05). Higher fish consumption was associated with 0.06 SD (95% CI: 0.01 to 0.10) high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and -0.07 SD (95% CI: -0.11 to -0.02) triglycerides. After correcting for multiple comparisons (p<0.001), higher fish, fruit and vegetable consumption were associated with higher fatty acid unsaturation, higher concentration and percentage of omega-3 and a lower ratio of omega-6/omega-3. At nominal significance (p<0.05), higher fish consumption was associated with lower very-low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides relevant metabolomics. Higher vegetable and fruit consumption were associated with lower glycolysis-related metabolomics. Lower sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) consumption was associated with lower branched-chain amino acids. Similar associations with adiposity and metabolomics biomarkers were observed for GDQS. CONCLUSIONS: Higher consumption of fruit, vegetables and fish and lower ice cream and SSBs consumption were associated with lower cardiometabolic risk in adolescents.

Cell segmentation is the fundamental task. Only by segmenting, can we define the quantitative spatial unit for collecting measurements to draw biological conclusions. Deep learning has revolutionized 2D cell segmentation, enabling generalized solutions across cell types and imaging modalities. This has been driven by the ease of scaling up image acquisition, annotation and computation. However 3D cell segmentation, which requires dense annotation of 2D slices still poses significant challenges. Labelling every cell in every 2D slice is prohibitive. Moreover it is ambiguous, necessitating cross-referencing with other orthoviews. Lastly, there is limited ability to unambiguously record and visualize 1000's of annotated cells. Here we develop a theory and toolbox, u-Segment3D for 2D-to-3D segmentation, compatible with any 2D segmentation method. Given optimal 2D segmentations, u-Segment3D generates the optimal 3D segmentation without data training, as demonstrated on 11 real life datasets, >70,000 cells, spanning single cells, cell aggregates and tissue.

At present, there is no internationally accepted set of core outcomes or measurement methods for epilepsy clinical practice. The International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) convened an international working group of experts in epilepsy, people with epilepsy, and their representatives to develop minimum sets of standardized outcomes and outcome measurement methods for clinical practice. Using modified Delphi consensus methods with consecutive rounds of online voting over 12 months, a core set of outcomes and corresponding measurement tool packages to capture the outcomes were identified for infants, children, and adolescents with epilepsy. Consensus methods identified 20 core outcomes. In addition to the outcomes identified for the ICHOM Epilepsy adult standard set, behavioral, motor, and cognitive/language development outcomes were voted as essential for all infants and children with epilepsy. The proposed set of outcomes and measurement methods will facilitate the implementation of the use of patient-centered outcomes in daily practice.
