RESUMO
There is current evidence that maternal surgery, ie, surgery performed during pregnancy (for any reason) and requiring an anesthetic, is associated with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality rates. The "Obstetrical Patient Management Protocol" details the behaviors and actions required by the postanesthesia nurse in providing quality care for the pregnant patient requiring surgery and/or anesthesia that is related or unrelated to her pregnancy.

Cerebrospinal fluid from patients with pyogenic meningitis in two rural hospitals in Nigeria was dried on filter paper and sent by post for analysis in a reference laboratory. Microbial antigens were detected by counter-current immunoelectrophoresis in 78 of the 142 specimens (55%). This method of detecting antigens deserves further application for epidemiological and diagnostic work in developing countries.
