[Comparative study of Morganella and Providencia bacteriophages]. / Sravnitel'noe izuchenie bakteriofagov Morganella i Providencia.

7 strains of M.morganii phages and 7 strains of P.rettgeri phages were isolated from lysogenic cultures and the environment. The main biological properties of these phages were studied. The phages under study formed independent taxonomic groups. These phages were found to be highly specific and capable of being used for the identification of bacteria.

[The heterogeneity of the antilysozyme activity in populations of opportunistic enterobacteria]. / Geterogennost' antilizotsimnoi aktivnosti v populiatsiiakh uslovno-patogennykh énterobakterii.

1,484 clones of 104 strains representing 11 genera of the family Enterobacteriaceae and having different levels of lysozyme activity were tested for the presence of this activity. In the populations of 53.9% of strains under study the heterogeneity of the levels of antilysozyme activity was noted. In 13.4% of strains under study clones having no antilysozyme activity were detected. Among Escherichia, Hafnia and Enterobacter strains without antilysozyme activity individual clones having such activity were detected; these clones constituted 3-17% of the total number of the studied clones.

[The biological properties of Serratia marcescens bacteriophages]. / Biologicheskie svoistva bakteriofagov Serratia marcescens.

Sixteen phages active against bacteria of the genus Serratia have been divided into 4 groups on the basis of the study of their biological properties. As a result, 5 typing phages have been selected, which permitted the typing of 77.3% of S. marcescens cultures under study, divided into 13 phage types.

[Spontaneous and stimulated nitroblue tetrazolium reduction tests in tuberculosis of the lungs]. / Spontannyi i stimulirovannyi test vosstanovleniia nitrosinego tetrazoliia pri tuberkuleze legkikh.

Cytochemical analysis of spontaneous and stimulated Nitro BT test values in 85 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and in 24 ones with pneumonia has shown a significant increase of spontaneous Nitro BT test activity with the maximal values at the peak of the disease and an essential reduction of these values during remission. Stimulation with BCG vaccine results in a still more significant elevation of these parameters, depending on the depth of the involvement. Spontaneous and stimulated Nitro BT tests in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and pneumonia appears to be a promising differential diagnostic test and a means for monitoring the therapy efficacy and for detection of secondary defects of phagocytosis system.

[Indices of body nonspecific reactivity in salmonellosis patients]. / Nekotorye pokazateli nespetsificheskoi reaktivnosti organizma u bol'nykh sal'monellezom.

A study of the functional-metabolic activity of neutrophilic leukocytes was performed in 54 patients with salmonellosis using cytochemical and luminescent-cytofluorimetric methods. The time course of disease revealed regular changes of the most important components of the leukocytic microbicidal system and indices of the NBT test activity depending on a stage, degree of severity, clinical type and type of applied therapy. Profound quantitative and qualitative shifts of the intraleukocytic components of the microbicidal system and indices of the NBT test of neutrophilic granulocytes in the time course of salmonellosis characterized the state of nonspecific body resistance.

The morphology and nucleotide composition of DNA of Citrobacter phages.

Citrobacter phages 38/37, 31/37, 40/1 and 8/5, isolated from lysogenic cultures, were concentrated and purified by 2 cycles of differential centrifugation. Electron microscopy of the phages has shown that their particles have similar morphology and that they relate to the morphological group A1. The heads of the phages are hexagonal, 50 +/- 2 nm in diameter. The tail of the phage is straight, 112-152 nm in length, with a contracting sheath 11.5-12.5 nm wide. The tails of the phages 38/37 and 40/1 were found to be slightly longer in comparison with the phages 31/37 and 8/5. Chromatographic investigation of DNA preparations of the phages revealed the presence of 4 nitrous bases. Identification of the latter permitted us to relate them to common nitrous bases. DNA of the phages is double-stranded and belongs to a weakly expressed guanine-cytosine type. The content of guanine and cytosine in DNA of the phage 38/37 amounts to 56.68%, that of the phage 31/37 to 56.75, of the phage 40/1 to 57.36% and of the phage 8/5 to 55.58%. No substantial variations were observed in the DNA composition of the phages.

[Isolation and properties of Citrobacter bacteriophages]. / Vydelenie i svoistva bakteriofagov Citrobacter.

Four phages differing in their antigenic properties, thermosensitivity and spectrum of action have been obtained from Citrobacter lysogenic cultures. To prepare the suspension of Citrobacter phages, phagolysates may be treated with chloroform 1:10 for 30 minutes. The isolated phages have proved to be highly specific. The possibility of distinguishing Citrobacter cultures by means of the phages under study has been shown.
