This study aimed to evaluate spatial variability of selected soil parameters as a smart agricultural technology guide to precise fertilizer application. A farm designated as Field 3 which is under Arabica coffee within a bigger Soil Mapping Unit (SMU) was selected for a more detailed soil observation at a scale of 1:5000. Soil samples were taken at depths of 0-15 and 15-30 cm across 20 sample locations in grids and selected properties analysed in the laboratory. Kriging interpolation method was used to estimate the accuracy of interpolation through cross-validation of the top soil parameters. In 0 to 15 and 15-30 cm depth, soil reaction, percentage organic carbon and percent nitrogen showed low variability of 5.1% and 5.8%, 10.4% and 12.7%, 14.5% and 17.6% respectively. Phosphorus was deficient in both depths and showed moderate variability of 36.2% and 42.3% in 0-15 and 15-30 cm respectively. Calcium and Magnesium ranged from sufficient to rich and showed moderate and low variability in top and bottom depths, respectively. All micronutrients were sufficient in the soil. The soils were classified as Mollic Nitisols. Results showed that soil parameters varied spatially within the field therefore, there is need for variable input application depending on the levels of these elements and purchasing of fertilizer blends that are suitable for nutrient deficiencies. Precision agriculture is highly recommended in the field to capitalize on soil heterogeneity.

Inherent low soil fertility remains a hindrance to potato production in Kenya and continues to pose a threat to food security. A study was conducted in Nyandarua and Meru counties to assess the soil fertility status in smallholder potato farms. Soil and plant tissue samples were collected and analysed for selected nutrients (pH, OC, N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Zn, B and Cu) from 198 farms. Critical nutrient levels were used to assess the sufficiency levels of nutrients for potato growth. Soils in the sampled farms were weakly to strongly acidic (pH-CaCl2 3.9-6.6) and had low to high soil organic matter content (1.5-97.5 g Kg-1). The percent of farms in Meru and Nyandarua with nutrient contents below critical levels were 66% and 20% for N, 46% and 85% for P, 67% and 31% for S, 9% and 51% for Cu, and 87% and 80% for B, respectively. Low tissue nutrient concentrations were observed for N, P, K, and S irrespective of the sites. Soil pH correlated strongly with majority of the analyzed soil and tissue nutrients. These results affirm the need to design integrative soil fertility management strategies to correct the impoverished soil fertility status in the study area.

BACKGROUND: The changes in land use and land cover have a strong effect on the total soil organic carbon, its fractions and its overall soil health. This study carried out in Olesharo Catchment, Kenya, was to quantify the differences in total organic carbon (TOC), particulate organic carbon (POC), mineral organic carbon (MOC) and carbon management index (CMI) among four land use types: grasslands, shrublands, agricultural lands and barelands. It was also purported to evaluate the use of CMI as an indicator for soil degradation or improvement in response to land use and land cover changes. RESULTS: The results of the study show that the mean values of TOC, POC and MOC are significantly different between land use types. Thus, shrublands have significantly higher TOC (22.26 g kg-1) than grasslands (10.29 g kg-1) and bare lands (7.56 g kg-1). They also have significantly higher POC (7.79 g kg-1) and MOC (10.04 g kg-1) than all the other land use types. The agricultural lands have higher CMI than grasslands (53% vs 41% relative to shrublands) suggesting that grasslands face serious degradation through overgrazing. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that different land use types have an influence on soil organic carbon pools, and consequently on the CMI, the CMI could be used as an indicator for soil degradation or improvement in response to land use and land cover changes.

A field study was carried out to evaluate the effects of tillage practices on soil physical properties in Mwala district, Eastern Kenya, during the long rains (LR) and short rains (SR) of 2012/13. The treatments were disc ploughing (DP), disc ploughing and harrowing (DPH), ox-ploughing (OX), subsoiling-ripping (SSR), hand hoeing with tied ridges (HTR), hand hoeing only (H). These were investigated under three cropping systems of sole maize, sole bean, and maize-bean intercrop in a split-plot design with four replications. Soil physical properties were monitored at different weeks after planting (WAP) throughout the growing seasons. A four-season average shows that soil moisture content was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in OX > SSR > DPH > H > HTR > DP with values ranging from 13.1 to 14.1%. Soil surface roughness and crust strength varied significantly (P < 0.05) over time within the growing seasons, between the tillage practices, and across the different seasons with values ranging from 26 to 66% and 1.21 to 1.31 MPa, respectively. Tillage practices and cropping systems did not significantly affect bulk density, porosity, or K sat values. It is apparent that long term tillage experiment (>4 seasons) would be required to detect changes in soil physical properties as a result of the soil management practices.
