RESUMO

We evaluated a noncontingent reinforcement treatment that included initial brief exposures to signaled alternation of availability and nonavailability of reinforcement, followed by rapid schedule thinning. Results confirmed findings from previous research (typically with differential reinforcement schedules) that establishing stimulus control across multiple treatment components facilitated schedule thinning. We discuss both the clinical utility of this procedure and the utility of stimulus control for making interventions more practical for clinicians.

RESUMO

Despite the utility of experimental functional analysis methodology, not all applications produce differentiated results. Factors such as interaction effects or methodological inefficiencies may compromise the likelihood of obtaining differentiated outcomes. Various studies have addressed methods to improve the efficiency of experimental functional analysis methodology (e.g., analysis of within-session responding). In the current study, we describe an updated model for progressing from brief to extended experimental analyses. The model incorporates several procedural refinements developed over the past 20+ years of experimental functional analysis research and additional conditions to confirm or annul findings. We present data for 20 participants who were referred for assessment and treatment of a variety of behavior problems (e.g., stereotypy, aggression, self-injury). We generally terminated the analyses when response patterns were consistent with established best-practice functional analysis methodology. Results showed conclusive interpretations were obtained for 100% of participants.

RESUMO

Social work has a longstanding commitment to sound research and the development and dissemination of evidence-based practice. To that end, multiple professional groups have developed or refined guidelines for reporting research procedures and findings, with the objectives of enhancing transparency, integrity, and rigor in science. Such guidelines can also facilitate replication and systematic review. The Template for Intervention Description and Replication (TIDieR) checklist represents the culmination of a multi-stage process to expand upon existing reporting guidelines. As such, the checklist provides a framework for more transparent communication about empirically-grounded interventions addressing a broad range of social and behavioral health issues. Use of this checklist can be beneficial for researchers, practitioners, and recipients of social work interventions. After discussing selected background regarding the need for and benefit of reporting standards and describing the TIDieR measure, we outline practical considerations in the checklist's use by those engaged in social work research.

RESUMO

When primary responsibility for Type 1 diabetes (DM1) treatment adherence transfers from parents to adolescents, glycemic control often suffers. Low rates of treatment adherence during this transition are possibly attributable to decreased parental involvement, disagreements between parents and children regarding treatment responsibilities, and increased family conflict. The current investigation assessed the relationships between each of these variables and glycemic control among youth diagnosed with DM1. Parent and child report questionnaires were completed by 64 parent-child dyads (ages 8-18) with a child diagnosed with DM1. HbA1c readings served as measures of glycemic control. Parental involvement in their children's treatment was reported to decline with age, however absolute levels of parent involvement were not significantly correlated with youth HbA1c levels. Parent-child agreement regarding treatment responsibility and reports of diabetes-related conflict were significant predictors of glycemic control. Results support previous findings implicating parent-child agreement regarding treatment responsibilities and family conflict as predictors of treatment adherence among youth with DM1. The current study found this relationship to be significant for a larger population of children for which past research has failed to find such an effect. Taken together, these findings suggest further research is warranted to identify effective methods for transferring treatment responsibilities from parents to children.

RESUMO

We examined relations between self-control responding and environmental variables with 3 children with behavior disorders. Differential delays were presented before or after task completion in a single-session reversal design. Delays presented before task completion produced more impulsive responding than those presented after task completion for all participants.
