Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) show promise in various medical domains, including medical imaging, precise diagnoses, and pharmaceutical research. In neuroscience and neurosurgery, AI/ML advancements enhance brain-computer interfaces, neuroprosthetics, and surgical planning. They are poised to revolutionize neuroregeneration by unraveling the nervous system's complexities. However, research on AI/ML in neuroregeneration is fragmented, necessitating a comprehensive review. Adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendations, 19 English-language papers focusing on AI/ML in neuroregeneration were selected from a total of 247. Two researchers independently conducted data extraction and quality assessment using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) 2018. Eight studies were deemed high quality, 10 moderate, and four low. Primary goals included diagnosing neurological disorders (35%), robotic rehabilitation (18%), and drug discovery (12% each). Methods ranged from analyzing imaging data (24%) to animal models (24%) and electronic health records (12%). Deep learning accounted for 41% of AI/ML techniques, while standard ML algorithms constituted 29%. The review underscores the growing interest in AI/ML for neuroregenerative medicine, with increasing publications. These technologies aid in diagnosing diseases and facilitating functional recovery through robotics and targeted stimulation. AI-driven drug discovery holds promise for identifying neuroregenerative therapies. Nonetheless, addressing existing limitations remains crucial in this rapidly evolving field.

Chronic heart failure (CHF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) frequently coexist, significantly impacting health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study evaluated HRQoL in patients with CHF, COPD, or both, three months post-COVID-19 discharge using EQ-5D and KCCQ questionnaires to guide targeted healthcare interventions. We conducted a cross-sectional study at "Victor Babes" Hospital in Timisoara, enrolling 180 patients who had recovered from COVID-19 (60 in each group including CHF, COPD, and both conditions). HRQoL was assessed via EQ-5D and KCCQ. Significant disparities in HRQoL measures were noted across the groups. Patients with both CHF and COPD reported the worst outcomes, especially in terms of hospital stay lengths due to COVID-19 (11.63 days) and initial oxygen saturation levels (88.7%). HRQoL improvements from discharge to three months post-discharge were significant, with EQ-5D mobility scores improving notably across all groups (CHF and COPD: 2.87 to 2.34, p = 0.010). KCCQ results reflected substantial enhancements in physical limitation (CHF and COPD: 38.94 to 58.54, p = 0.001) and quality of life scores (CHF and COPD: 41.38 to 61.92, p = 0.0031). Regression analysis revealed that dual diagnosis (CHF and COPD) significantly impacted usual activities and quality of life (ß = -0.252, p = 0.048; ß = -0.448, p = 0.017), whereas the initial severity of COVID-19 was a significant predictor of worse HRQoL outcomes (ß = -0.298, p = 0.037; ß = -0.342, p = 0.024). The presence of both CHF and COPD in patients recovering from COVID-19 was associated with more severe HRQoL impairment compared with either condition alone. These findings emphasize the need for specialized, comprehensive post-COVID-19 recovery programs that address the complex interplay among chronic conditions to optimize patient outcomes and enhance quality of life.

Recent studies hypothesized that vitamin D supplementation and subsequent higher 25(OH)D serum levels could protect against respiratory infections in children. This cross-sectional study, conducted from May 2022 to December 2023 in Timisoara, Romania, aimed to evaluate the potential influence of vitamin D supplementation on the incidence of respiratory infections among preschool-age children. This study examined 215 children over 18 months who were split into a group of patients with recurrent respiratory infections (n = 141) and another group of patients with only one respiratory tract infection in the past 12 months (n = 74). Patients were evaluated based on their serum vitamin D levels 25(OH)D, demographic characteristics, and health outcomes. The study identified that preschool-age children with recurrent infections had significantly lower mean vitamin D concentrations (24.5 ng/mL) compared to the control group (29.7 ng/mL, p < 0.001). Additionally, a higher proportion of vitamin D deficiency was observed among children with recurrent infections in the past 12 months. Notably, vitamin D supplementation above 600 IU/week significantly reduced the likelihood of respiratory infections, evidenced by an odds ratio of 0.523 (p < 0.001), indicating that preschool-age children receiving a dose of vitamin D higher than 600 IU/week were about half as likely to experience respiratory infections compared to those who did not. Furthermore, no significant associations were found between sun exposure, daily sunscreen use, and the incidence of respiratory infections. Conclusively, this study underscores the potential role of vitamin D in helping the immune system against respiratory infections in preschool-age children. The observed protective effect of vitamin D supplementation suggests a potential public health strategy to mitigate the incidence of respiratory infections in preschool children on top of the already known benefits.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a type of cardiac arrhythmia causing shortness of breath, lightheadedness, and palpitations. It may go unrecognized and asymptomatic among many patients. AF is not a potentially fatal arrhythmia; its hemodynamic, structural, and hemocoagulative effects have a significant impact on the standard of life, which can lead to various complications such as stroke. A stroke caused by AF leads to additional burdens on both patients and the global economy. Patients with AF can prevent strokes with oral anticoagulants; however, ensuring diligent adherence to medication is crucial for maximizing treatment efficacy. Since they have a lighter treatment load than warfarin, non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are also recommended with better hope for medication adherence. Various anticoagulants such as warfarin and ximelagatran, among many more, are prescribed to patients who have the potential to reduce the incidence of stroke as well as alleviate their likelihood of developing other thromboembolic events that can decrease their quality of life. Economic and psychological burdens associated with diminished functionality can be prevented by anticoagulant therapy among AF patients, therefore reducing their economic and social burden. This is due to the negative association between stroke among AF patients and anticoagulation consumption.

Respiratory infections corona virus 2-caused inflammatory disorders are CORONAVIRUS DISEASE 2019 (COVID-19) (SARS-CoV-2). A serious corona virus acute disease arose in 2019. Wuhan, China, was the first location to find the virus in December 2019, which has now been spreading all over the world. Recurrent neural networks, together with the use of LSTMs, fail to provide solutions to numerous issues (RNNs). So this paper has proposed RNN with Gated Recurrent Units for the COVID-19 prediction. This paper utilizes system, which was developed to assist nations (the Czech Republic, the United States, India, and Russia) combat the early stages of a newly emerging infection. For instance, the system tracks confirmed and reported cases, and monitors cures and deaths on a daily basis. This was done to allow the relevant parties to have an early grasp of the disastrous damage the lethal virus will bring. The implemented is an ensemble approach of RNN and GRU that work has computed the RMSE value for the different cases such as infected, cure and death across the four different countries.

RESUMO

Tuberculosis (TB) is an airborne illness that induces systemic inflammation. It often affects the lungs causing cough, fever, and chest pain. A commonly associated comorbid condition in TB is anemia. This review article has summarized various studies with an aim to gain a better understanding of pathogenesis and the role of cytokines that contribute to the development of anemia in TB. The study has gathered risk factors that enhance the likelihood of TB patients acquiring anemia. It has reviewed therapeutic modalities such as antitubercular therapy and iron therapy in an attempt to find which of them are effective in reducing the severity of anemia. This review article has also emphasized the importance of measuring hepcidin and ferritin and has touched upon the investigations that can be easily implemented.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative age-related disorder that affects the central nervous system (CNS) and is characterized by uncontrollable movements such as shaking, stiffness, and loss of balance and coordination. Depression is a common non-motor manifestation of PD, but unfortunately, depression remains unrecognized and often undertreated. The underlying pathophysiology of depression in PD is complicated, and many studies have been conducted to know the exact cause, but the question remains unanswered. In this article, we discuss various pathophysiologies by which depression occurs in PD. The most widely accepted theories are neuroinflammation and monoamine oxidase theory. This article also explored the pharmacological treatment of depression in PD; this involves standard antidepressant therapy such as tricyclic antidepressants (TCA), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO); non-pharmacological treatments such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) have also been discussed. However, physicians hesitate to prescribe antidepressants to patients with PD due to concerns about harmful drug-drug interactions between antidepressants and antiparkinsonian drugs. Despite the complicated link between PD and depression, the co-administration of antidepressants and antiparkinsonian drugs is safe and beneficial when appropriately managed. However, early recognition and initiation of treatment of depression in PD reduces the longitudinal course and improves the cross-sectional picture. This review article also explored the clinical and diagnostic findings and impact on the quality of life of depression in PD.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition that can be caused due to any etiology leading to structural damage to the kidney, which can be measured by a decrease in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and the presence of damage biomarkers for more than three months. This article has discussed the causal relationship between atrial fibrillation (AF) and CKD, a few of them being inflammation, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) activation, anemia, and uremia associated with CKD. This review mentioned the clinical impact of the presence of AF in CKD patients. The presence of AF in CKD patients aggravates the renal dysfunction, which in turn adds to the generation of AF. This article explores the various pharmacological and interventional treatment modalities, including antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants, and cardiac ablation, and their complications, leading to restricted usage in CKD patients.

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy affecting females worldwide and is also among the top causes of all cancer-related deaths. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is known to have the highest rate of mortality in women. There are several risk factors for both CVD and breast cancer that overlap, such as diet, smoking, and obesity, and also the current breast cancer treatment has a significant detrimental effect on cardiovascular health in general. Patients with exposure to potentially cardiotoxic treatments, including anthracyclines, trastuzumab, and radiation therapy, are more likely to develop CVD than non-cancer controls. Early detection and treatment may reduce the risk of the development of cardiac morbidity and mortality and would increase the number of breast cancer survivors. This article provides a comprehensive overview of breast cancer, identifies shared risk factors among breast cancer and CVD, and the cardiotoxic effects of therapy. It also reviews possible prevention and treatment of CVD in breast cancer patients and reviews literature about chemoprevention of cardiac disease in the setting of breast cancer treatment.

Cardiac vascular dysfunction was described years ago in alcohol-associated liver cirrhosis and recently became known as cirrhotic cardiomyopathy (CCM) in 2005. Cirrhotic cardiomyopathy is a specific cardiac dysfunction estimated to be prevalent in half of the liver cirrhosis patient population; it comprises a triad of impaired myocardial contractile responses to stress (systolic dysfunction), inadequate ventricular relaxation, and electrophysiological abnormalities. This review describes the various pathophysiological mechanisms connecting liver cirrhosis to the alterations seen in CCM and briefly mentions the role of the cardiovascular system in connecting the pathophysiology of hepatorenal syndrome (HRS). Insertion of the transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) and liver transplantation exacerbates the underlying cardiac dysfunction leading to signs and symptoms of heart failure. This article also focuses on the clinical importance of diagnosing CCM and the limitations existing around traditional diagnostic criteria based on transmitral flow parameters. It highlights newer parameters proposed by the Cirrhotic Cardiomyopathy Consortium to obtain a diagnosis of CCM. Liver transplantation is the only treatment available to cure CCM.

Sarcoidosis is an enigma diagnosed by ruling out other etiologies of granulomatous inflammation. The multisystem manifestations of sarcoidosis and the clinical polymorphism pose a diagnostic challenge to all physicians. The skin is the most commonly affected organ after the lungs in sarcoidosis. Dermatological manifestations can appear before, during, or after systemic involvement, and the type of skin lesion can have prognostic significance. Also, a biopsy of skin lesions is less invasive and more accessible to perform than a biopsy of visceral organs. Thus, in certain ways, cutaneous manifestations can aid in the diagnosis and prognosis of systemic disease. This article has focused on the frequently encountered skin lesions of sarcoidosis along with their prevalence, clinical features, and management.
