Depending on the geographic and climatic region and vegetation, allergenic plants are characteristic for certain areas and the pollen concentrations of various plant species depend on the fenophase of each single species and most of all on the climatic and meteorological conditions of a certain area. It is precisely because of these specific characteristics that the hypersensitivity of patients to various types of pollen allergens differs according to the geographic regions. The aim of this paper is to determine the frequency of inhalation allergies in adult population (> 19 years of age) caused by single types of allergens according to the defined space units (micro-regions) with special emphasis on the rural and urban areas. A number of 2,192 patients have been tested for allergy skin prick tests over a period of four years. Every patient was asked to fill in the questionnaire which contained 29 questions. The results of skin prick testing show that out of a total of 2,192 patients 86.72% were sensitized to pollen, 36.45% to mites, 2.46% to spores of fungi and mould and 5.1% of patients to other allergens which include the allergens of cockroaches, feathers and animal hair (p < 0.001). The largest number of poly-sensitized persons allergic to pollen allergens was sensitized to allergens from the pollen of plants that belong to the botanical family of grass. There were 25.36% patients mono-sensitized to individual allergens. In the northern and western parts of the city and the county, the majority of persons were sensitized to the birch pollen allergens, and this is statistically much more than the share of patients with the place of residence in the southern and eastern parts of the city and the county. In the southern and eastern locations prevails the share of sensitized persons to ambrosia which is statistically much more than the share of patients with the place of residence in the northern and western part of the city and the county.

Similar to some other Central European countries, Croatia has low HIV prevalence among injecting drug users (IDUs) but high hepatitis C (HCV) prevalence. This may indicate different patterns of risk behaviour in this region than in other parts of Europe. The main objectives of this study were to assess the seroprevalence of HIV and hepatitis B and C and related risk factors among IDUs in the three largest Croatian cities (Zagreb, Split, Rijeka) and within the national prison system, as well as to apply a multiplier-method population size estimation of IDUs in Zagreb, Split and Rijeka. Recruitment sites were selected in collaboration with the local public health institutes, NGOs, Centers for treatment municipalities and the judiciary system. Participants were recruited during September and October 2007. Trained peer-recruiters were used to recruit IDU participants at treatment and harm reduction centres as well as pre-identified social, commercial and street based venues. Participants completed the study questionnaire and provided venous blood samples for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C testing. The study included 601 participants, of whom 121 were recruited in Split, 130 in Zagreb, 150 in Rijeka and 200 in the prison system. The prevalence of positive anti-HCV tests was 65% in Split, 51% in Zagreb, 29% in Rijeka and 44% in the prisons. The prevalence of anti-HBcAg was 31% in Split, 13% in Zagreb, 9% in Rijeka and 24% in prison. No case of HIV infection was found. The estimated IDUs population sizes were 2,805 for Zagreb area, 3,347 for Split and 1,370 for Rijeka area, however confidence intervals were very large, indicating the need for larger samples. A high frequency of positive markers on hepatitis B virus and C virus in the population of injecting drug users in Croatia has been confirmed with this research, as well as a low prevalence of HIV infection. This may be related to relatively low levels of injecting risk behaviour and injecting frequency although it is not possible to make strong conclusions on risk behaviour, as participants were mostly recruited in harm reduction programmes. This research should be followed by targeted activities for reducing risks of infectious diseases among injecting drug users in the Republic of Croatia and future research at the national level.

The increase in ragweed mediated health problems has led to the development of defense strategies in the countries with the most serious ragweed pollution, namely Hungary, Italy and France. The aim of this paper is to define the frequency of allergic disturbances brought by ragweed pollen in the period between 2002 and 2004, and to devise an action plan for its eradication in the area of Zagreb, as well as in Zagreb County. Thanks to the analysis of common methods of ragweed eradication, even by stating biological ragweed eradication, the best efficiency in ragweed eradication would be achieved through a method that combines several common methods, i.e., a mixed method. In its order on taking measures for obligatory eradication of ragweed, it has stated that the Ministry will ensure funds so that Plant Protection Department in Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Croatia, and Department of Herbology of the Faculty of Agriculture of Zagreb could observe the beginning and continuity of ragweed blossom, make an evaluation on the degree of weed overgrowth, establish how widespread it is in the Republic of Croatia, inform the public via the media on control measures and some other duties, but there is no financial help to those who are selected to eradicate ragweed.
