RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: In patients with severe nasal polyposis resistant to strict medical treatment, surgery is indicated, but no prognostic factors for surgery efficacy have yet been determined. Some authors suggest that eosinophilic infiltration of nasal polyps could indicate a risk of surgical ineffectiveness. METHODS: Surgical plus medical treatment was evaluated over a mean follow-up period of 64 months. One hundred and forty-four subjects were separated into two groups: those with eosinophilic infiltration of >50 per cent (n = 73); and those with

RESUMO

Surgical injuries and blunt trauma are the main causes of thoracic duct lesions. Cervical chylous fistula and chylothorax occur frequently after lesions of the cervical portion of the thoracic duct. On the other hand, thoracic duct cyst is a very rare entity, especially in its cervical portion. The authors reported a case of thoracic duct cyst, presenting as an asymptomatic left cervical mass. Diagnosis was suggested by computerized axial tomography and confirmed by histological analysis, after surgical removal of the cyst. After review of the literature, the authors recommended surgical treatment of cervical thoracic duct cysts in order to prevent potential complications as traumatic or spontaneous rupture.

RESUMO

Sarcoidosis is a multisystemic granulomatosis of unknown etiology which mainly affects young adults. It is characterized primarily by bilateral hilar adenopathies, a pulmonary infiltrate and cutaneous and ocular lesions. It rarely occurs in children under the age of 16. Localization in the upper respiratory tract (URT) is infrequent and sarcoidosis of the URT in children is exceptional, with only 13 cases reported in the literature. In the present report we describe the clinical, diagnostic explorations, histological and therapeutic aspects of 2 new cases in children.

RESUMO

After the discovery of streptomycin 1944, laryngeal tuberculosis became a rare complication of advanced pulmonary tuberculosis. Since that time the clinical aspects of the disease have changed. We analyzed these changes by reviewing 65 papers in English and in French published from 1965 to 1991 involving 738 cases and added our 4 new personal cases. To our knowledge, we report the first two well-documented cases of laryngeal tuberculosis in HIV positive patients. We propose a therapeutic and follow-up protocol for laryngeal and chest specialists treating such patients.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to define the most interesting parameters useful for a clinical application of acoustic distortion products (mainly, F1 and F2 primaries frequencies and levels). The most interesting F1 and F2 primaries level in order to separate subjects with a normally-hearing function and patients with a sensorineural hearing loss is 50 dBHL. This result can be explained by some physiological properties of cochlear mechanisms.
