RESUMO

The technique used to align liquid crystals-rubbing the surface of a substrate on which a liquid crystal is subsequently deposited-has been perfected by the multibillion-dollar liquid-crystal display industry. However, it is widely recognized that a non-contact alignment technique would be highly desirable for future generations of large, high-resolution liquid-crystal displays. A number of alternative alignment techniques have been reported, but none of these have so far been implemented in large-scale manufacturing. Here, we report a non-contact alignment process, which uses low-energy ion beams impinging at a glancing angle on amorphous inorganic films, such as diamond-like carbon. Using this approach, we have produced both laptop and desktop displays in pilot-line manufacturing, and found that displays of higher quality and reliability could be made at a lower cost than the rubbing technique. The mechanism of alignment is explained by adopting a random network model of atomic arrangement in the inorganic films. Order is induced by exposure to an ion beam because unfavourably oriented rings of atoms are selectively destroyed. The planes of the remaining rings are predominantly parallel to the direction of the ion beam.

The ability of the bioreductive drugs AQ4N and tirapazamine to enhance the anti-tumour effect of cyclophosphamide was assessed in three murine tumour models. In male BDF mice implanted with the T50/80 mammary carcinoma, AQ4N (50-150 mg kg(-1)) in combination with cyclophosphamide (100 mg kg(-1)) produced an effect equivalent to a single 200 mg kg 1 dose of cyclophosphamide. Tirapazamine (25 mg kg(-1)) in combination with cyclophosphamide (100 mg kg(-1)) produced an effect equivalent to a single 150 mg kg(-1) dose of cyclophosphamide. In C3H mice implanted with the SCCVII or RIF-1 tumours, enhancement of tumour cell killing was found with both drugs in combination with cyclophosphamide (50-200 mg kg(-1)); AQ4N (50-200 mg kg(-1)) produced a more effective combination than tirapazamine (12.5-50 mg kg(-1)). Unlike tirapazamine, which showed a significant increase in toxicity to bone marrow cells, the combination of AQ4N (100 mg kg(-1)) 6 h prior to cyclophosphamide (100 mg k(-1)) resulted in no additional toxicity towards bone marrow cells compared to that caused by cyclophosphamide alone. In conclusion, AQ4N gave a superior anti-tumour effect compared to tirapazamine when administered with a single dose of cyclophosphamide (100 mg kg(-1)).

Sixteen persons with a wide range of disabilities were subjected to a formal scuba-diver training course, after passing a medical and psychological assessment specific for divers. Subjects with brain damage and with impaired bladder and bowel control were included. The current general guidelines for the medical assessment of non-disabled divers appear to be suitable for disabled persons, but additionally each particular disability demands careful individual assessment. Such assessment requires knowledge of diving and rehabilitative medicine and diving practice. The study supports the argument that scuba-diving may improve the physical self-concept of selected disabled persons. It is stressed that specialized diving supervision is essential for such people.
