RESUMO

The synergistic effect between different fillers plays a crucial role in determining the performance of composites. In this work, spherical boron nitride (BN) and flaky BN are used as hybrid fillers to improve the thermal conductivity (TC) of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites. A series of HDPE composites were prepared by adjusting the mass ratio (1:0, 4:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:4, and 0:1) of spherical BN and flaky BN. The SEM results indicate that the spherical BN (with a particle size of 3 µm) effectively filled the gaps between the flaky BN (with a particle size of 30 µm), leading to the formation of more continuous heat conduction paths with the composite. Remarkably, when the mass ratio of spherical BN to flaky BN was set to 1:4 (with a total BN filling amount of 30 wt%), the TC of the composite could reach up to 1.648 Wm-1K-1, which is obviously higher than that of the composite containing a single filler, realizing the synergistic effect of the hybrid fillers. In addition, the synergistic effect of fillers also affects the thermal stability and crystallization behavior of composites. This work is of great significance for optimizing the application of hybrid BN fillers in the field of thermal management.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Urachal remnants (URs) represent uncommon and underdiagnosed entities that are usually detected incidentally at imaging or present clinically different manifestations. METHODS: Here we presented a boy with UR infection. Ultrasonography and bacterial culture and identification were performed. He received antibiotic treatment and underwent surgical excision of the cyst. RESULTS: The patient presented with both a urachal cyst and umbilical-urachal sinus. UR infection was caused by Actinomyces turicensis. He recovered well from the operation without complications. CONCLUSIONS: The present case reminds clinicians to be familiar with imaging features of different types of URs and their potential complications and indicates the necessity of pathogenic microorganism analysis to tailor antibiotic treatment and post-operative follow-up to prevent complications.

RESUMO

Objective: This experiment aimed to study the bactericidal effect of photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS)-erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser on Enterococcus faecalis in curved root canals. Materials and methods: Sixty-two molars with moderately curved roots (10°-20°) and 62 molars with severely curved roots (25°-40°; one root was selected in each tooth) were assigned to group A and group B, respectively. A curved root canal model with E. faecalis infection was established. Four samples were used for sterility test, and 20 samples were used for testing if the modeling was valid. The remaining 100 samples were randomly divided into 5 subgroups (A1/A2/A3/A4/A5 and B1/B2/B3/B4/B5, n = 10) and treated as follows: A1/B1: PIPS-Er:YAG laser +5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl); A2/B2: passive ultrasonic irrigation +5.25% NaOCl; A3/B3: PIPS-Er:YAG laser+normal saline (NS); A4/B4: two-hole root canal irrigator +5.25% NaOCl; A5/B5: two-hole root canal irrigator+NS. After treatment, bacterial culture counts and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observations were carried out for each subgroup, and the bacterial clearance rate of each subgroup was calculated. SPSS 23 software package was used for statistical analysis of the data, and a single-factor analysis of variance was used to compare the subgroups. Results: The bacterial clearance rate in group A was higher than that in group B; however, in each group, A or B, there were significant differences between the subgroups (p < 0.001) except for subgroups 1 and 2 (p > 0.05). SEM revealed that the antibacterial and smear layer removal effect of root canal in subgroups 1 and 2 was better than that in subgroups 3, 4, and 5. Conclusions: PIPS-Er:YAG can significantly enhance the bactericidal effect of NaOCl on E. faecalis in moderately and severely curved root canals.

RESUMO

Ocean waves are one of the most promising renewable energy sources for large-scope applications due to the abundant water resources on the earth. Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) technology could provide a new strategy for water wave energy harvesting. In this work, we investigated the charging characteristics of utilizing a wavy-structured TENG to charge a capacitor under direct water wave impact and under enclosed ball collision, by combination of theoretical calculations and experimental studies. The analytical equations of the charging characteristics were theoretically derived for the two cases, and they were calculated for various load capacitances, cycle numbers, and structural parameters such as compression deformation depth and ball size or mass. Under the direct water wave impact, the stored energy and maximum energy storage efficiency were found to be controlled by deformation depth, while the stored energy and maximum efficiency can be optimized by the ball size under the enclosed ball collision. Finally, the theoretical results were well verified by the experimental tests. The present work could provide strategies for improving the charging performance of TENGs toward effective water wave energy harvesting and storage.
