RESUMO

Development of non-conventional hybrids responds to the demand for the Elotes Occidentales land-race for production of pozole. The effect of growing cycle (2019, 2020, and 2021) on physical characteristics, flowered grain quality, and phytochemical content of two non-conventional hybrids of pozolero maize, as well as the effect of the presence or absence of pedicel, type of pollination (open and controlled, 2019), and parents (female and male, 2020) on flowered grain quality and content of phytochemical compounds, were evaluated. Size, hardness, color, total phenols, and anthocyanins in unprocessed grain were determined. Yield, volume, and puncture force were measured in flowered grain. Results were analyzed with a factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design. There were significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) in most of the variables studied by effect of crop cycle and hybrid. Non-conventional hybrids had large grains (40 g 100 grains-1), soft endosperm (flotation index > 60), pink-purple color, and phenol and anthocyanin contents similar to those reported for the Elotes Occidentales land-race. The presence or absence of the pedicel did not affect flowered grain quality. Controlled pollination favored anthocyanin synthesis. The female parent determined the anthocyanin content of non-conventional hybrids. Thermal processing reduced anthocyanins by 60%; however, they leached into the flowering broth, so that the pozole made from non-conventional hybrids can have improved nutraceutical value, relative to that of pozole made with Cacahuacintle land-race.

RESUMO

Herein, the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formate on carbon-supported bismuth nanoparticles is reported. Carbon-supported Bi nanoparticles (about 10 nm in size) were synthesized using a simple, fast and scalable approach performed under room conditions. The so-prepared Bi electrocatalyst was characterized by different physicochemical techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction and subsequently air-brushed on a carbon paper to prepare electrodes. These electrodes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and also by cyclic voltammetry. Finally, CO2 electroreduction electrolyses were performed at different electrode potentials for 3 h. At the optimal electrode potential (-1.6 V vs AgCl/Ag), the concentration of formate was about 77 mM with a faradaic efficiency of 93 ± 2.5%. A 100% faradaic efficiency was found at a lower potential (-1.5 V vs AgCl/Ag) with a formate concentration of about 55 mM. In terms of stability, we observed that after about 70 h (in 3 h electrolysis experiments at different potentials), the electrode deactivates due to the gradual loss of metal as shown by SEM/EDX analyses of the deactivated electrodes.

RESUMO

The physicochemical and mechanical properties of new alkaline anion-exchange membranes (AAEMs) based on chitosan (CS) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymers doped with unsupported copper nanoparticles (NPs) and copper exchanged over different porous materials were investigated regarding ion-exchange capacity (IEC), OH- conductivity, water uptake (WU), water vapor permeability (WVP), and thermal and mechanical resistance. The influence of the type of filler included in different morphologies and filler loading has been explored using copper exchanged materials such as the layered porous titanosilicate AM-4, layered stannosilicate UZAR-S3, and zeolites Y, MOR, and BEA. Compared to commercially available anion-exchange membranes, the best performing membranes in terms of WU, IEC, OH- conductivity and WVP in this study were those containing 10 wt % of Cu-AM-4 and Cu-UZAR-S3, although 10 wt % Cu-MOR provided better mechanical strength at close values of WVP and anion conductivity. It was also observed that when Cu was exchanged in a porous silicate matrix, its oxidation state was lower than when embedded as unsupported metal NPs. In addition, the statistical analysis of variance determined that the electrochemical properties of the membranes were noticeably affected by both the type and filler loading, and influenced also by the copper oxidation state and content in the membrane, but their hydrophilic properties were more affected by the polymers. The largest significant effects were noticed on the water sorption and transport properties, which gives scope for the design of AAEMs for electrochemical and water treatment applications.

RESUMO

Pitaya fruits (Stenocereus spp.) contain betalains and phenolic compounds that have not been completely characterized. Fruits of two ecotypes of S. pruinosus, red-fleshed (SpR) and orange-fleshed (SpO), and two of S. stellatus, red-fleshed (SsR) and white-fleshed (SsW), were characterized in their betalains and phenolic compounds. The chromatographic profile of betalains was similar in SpR, SpO, and SsR, where indicaxanthin, gomphrenin I, phyllocacthin, and their isomers predominated. Betaxanthins content was higher than betacyanins and ranged from 17,706.7±1128.1 to 22,053.6±328.1µg/g dry sample. The identified phenolics mostly corresponded to hydroxycinnamoyl derivatives, flavonols and flavanones. The phenolics content was higher in S. stellatus than in S. pruinosus. The ecotype SsW, that had flesh without color, showed the highest concentration. The antioxidant capacity varied within 9.21±0.84 and 2.41±0.36µmolTrolox/g fresh sample, as determined by the ABTS assay. By its phytochemical composition, the fruits of pitaya can be a good source of antioxidant compounds.

RESUMO

l-lactate is an essential metabolite present in embryonic cell culture. Changes of this important metabolite during the growth of human embryo reflect the quality and viability of the embryo. In this study, we report a sensitive, stable, and easily manufactured electrochemical biosensor for the detection of lactate within embryonic cell cultures media. Screen-printed disposable electrodes are used as electrochemical sensing platforms for the miniaturization of the lactate biosensor. Chitosan/multi walled carbon nanotubes composite have been employed for the enzymatic immobilization of the lactate oxidase enzyme. This novel electrochemical lactate biosensor analytical efficacy is explored towards the sensing of lactate in model (buffer) solutions and is found to exhibit a linear response towards lactate over the concentration range of 30.4 and 243.9 µM in phosphate buffer solution, with a corresponding limit of detection (based on 3-sigma) of 22.6 µM and exhibits a sensitivity of 3417 ± 131 µAM(-1) according to the reproducibility study. These novel electrochemical lactate biosensors exhibit a high reproducibility, with a relative standard deviation of less than 3.8% and an enzymatic response over 82% after 5 months stored at 4 °C. Furthermore, high performance liquid chromatography technique has been utilized to independently validate the electrochemical lactate biosensor for the determination of lactate in a commercial embryonic cell culture medium providing excellent agreement between the two analytical protocols.

RESUMO

Fruits with red and orange flesh of the columnar cactus pitaya (Stenocereus pruinosus) were studied to evaluate physical characteristics, total soluble solids, betalains and soluble phenols content, and antioxidant activity. Fruits had, in average, weight of 179.0 g, 9.8 °Brix, 9.4 % carbohydrates, 1.25 % protein, 0.11 % ethereal extract, 0.60 % crude fiber, and 0.62 % ash. Also, fruits resulted rich in Fe (22.8-27.8 mg/kg). Hue angle and contents of betacyanins, betaxanthins (µg/g dry sample), and total soluble phenols (mg GAE/g fresh sample) were 19.8°, 2860.0, 3210.0, and 1.6 in the red material, and 28.9°, 470.0, 2670.0, and 1.2, respectively, in the orange fruit. The antioxidant capacity was higher in the red material, since the ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)) technique reported 1090.6 and 735.4 µmol of Trolox equivalents/g fresh flesh in red and orange fruits, respectively, while the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay reported 7.84 and 5.16 µmol of Trolox equivalents/g fresh flesh, respectively. The chromatographic profile showed five betalains in red fruits, but only four of them were observed in those orange fleshed.
