RESUMO

This study investigates the large-scale distribution patterns of the acoustic scattering layers and micronekton density across the Northeast Atlantic Ocean during daylight hours. A research cruise on board R/V "Kronprins Haakon" was conducted during May 2019 from Cape Verde to Bay of Biscay. Hydrological data were obtained at 20 conductivity-temperature-depth sensor (CTD) stations. To estimate the micronekton densities in front of the trawl, an autonomous echo sounder (120 or 200 kHz) on the headrope of the macroplankton trawl was used. Acoustic data were also collected along the cruise track using ship-mounted multi-frequency echo sounders (backscatter at 18 and 38 kHz was analyzed). Acoustic observations (both at 18, 38 and 120/200 kHz) showed clear patterns in the horizontal distribution of the micronekton during daytime with higher backscatter and echo densities in the south of the study area (from 17 to 37° N), and the absence of high backscatter in the surface from 37 to 45° N. Backscatter and echo densities were found to be significantly influenced by: temperature, salinity, and oxygen, as well as depth and time of the day.

The genus Pseudoterranova includes parasite species of cetaceans and pinnipeds. The third stage larva (L3) of seal-infecting species occur in second intermediate or paratenic fish hosts mainly in neritic waters. This study firstly describes a Pseudoterranova L3 from meso/bathypelagic fishes off Macaronesia. L3s were morphologically and genetically studied by light microscopy and sequencing of the mtDNA cox2 and entire ITS rDNA genes. Bayesian inferences were performed with sequences from the larvae and selected sequences from GenBank. The nematode L3s were molecularly identified as Pseudoterranova ceticola, a parasite of kogiid whales. Such larvae were collected from Bolinichthys indicus, Chauliodus danae, Eupharynx pelecanoides, Diaphus rafinesquii, D. mollis, Diretmus argenteus and Maulisia argipalla. They mainly occurred in the viscera of these fishes. Pseudoterranova ceticola L3 were small (< 12 mm) and whitish, and a prominent characteristic is a circumoral ridge extending from the ventral boring tooth which differentiate them from Pseudoterranova spp. L3 maturing in pinnipeds and Terranova sensu lato larvae that mature in poikilotherms. The shape of the tail: conical, long, pointed, ventrally curved and lacking mucron also distinguish these larvae from those of the pinniped-infecting Pseudoterranova spp. Phylogenetic analyses based on mtDNA cox2 and ITS rDNA sequences suggest that P. ceticola is closely related to Skrjabinisakis spp., and not with Pseudoterranova spp. parasitizing pinnipeds. The related species Skrjabinisakis paggiae, S. brevispiculata and S. physeteris (until recently belonging to genus Anisakis), are as P. ceticola also parasites of physeteroid cetaceans. The morphology and morphological variation of the larvae of the cetacean parasite P. ceticola is thoroughly described for the first time. These L3 can readily be morphologically distinguished from those of the pinniped-infecting Pseudoterranova spp. The parasite likely completes its life cycle in the mesopelagic and bathypelagic realm, with meso/bathypelagic fish as 2nd intermediate or paratenic hosts and kogiids as final host. Thus, Pseudoterranova from cetaceans appear to be morphologically, genetically, and ecologically differentiated to those from pinnipeds, suggesting that they are not congeneric.

This study analyses fish data to understand how the gradual increase of salinity registered in a coastal lagoon and consequently, anthropogenic disturbance, affected the fish communities. For that, fish assemblages of the Ria de Aveiro were sampled monthly in 3 years from different decades (1988, 1997 and 2012). Dominant species were Atherina boyeri, A. presbyter, Sardina pilchardus, Dicentrarchus labrax, Liza aurata and L. ramada. Significant differences in fish communities were detected among years in both terms of density and biomass. Results pointed out to a taxonomic and functional homogenization of fish assemblages in 2012, when salinity was higher and its range of variation across the whole lagoon more uniform. Marine species were clearly associated with 2012, while some freshwater species only appeared in 1988, reflecting the gradual salinity increase in the lagoon. Overall, both the structure and function of fish assemblages of Ria de Aveiro have changed over the time, which was attributed to human activities to maintain the lagoon operational.

This study aimed to assess the impact of trace element concentrations in fish assemblages of a recovering coastal lagoon. Fish, water and sediment were sampled in winter and summer in the Ria de Aveiro (Portugal). Multivariate analyses were used to examine the relationship between fish assemblages and environmental variables (physical-chemical parameters, contaminants and sediment grain size). In winter, fish density and biomass were mainly affected by the water turbidity, while Li concentration in the water column was found to be significant for fish biomass. During summer, a significant relationship was found between fish density and temperature, Hg, Li and Zn concentration in the sediment. These contaminants were mainly associated with the historically contaminated area, were Liza spp. and Dicentrarchus labrax appeared as dominant species. Environmental variables were not significant for fish biomass. The historical contamination in the Ria de Aveiro still seems to exert some influence on fish community structure.
