RESUMO

This paper describes a procedure for the validation of alpha-particle sources (exempt unsealed sources) to be used in experimental setups with liquefied gases at cryogenic temperatures (down to -196 °C) and high vacuum. These setups are of interest for the development and characterization of neutrino and dark matter detectors based on liquid argon, among others. Due to the high purity requirements, the sources have to withstand high vacuum and cryogenic temperatures for extended periods. The validation procedure has been applied to 241Am sources produced by electrodeposition.

RESUMO

The LHCb collaboration has recently reported the largest CP violation effect from a single amplitude, as well as other giant CP asymmetries in several B-meson decays into three charmless light mesons. It is also claimed that this is predominantly due to ππ→KK[over ¯] rescattering in the final state, particularly in the 1 to 1.5 GeV region. In these analyses the ππ→KK[over ¯] amplitude is by default estimated from the ππ elastic scattering amplitude and does not describe the existing ππ→KK[over ¯] scattering data. Here we show how the recent model-independent dispersive analysis of ππ→KK[over ¯] data can be easily implemented in the LHCb formalism. This leads to a more accurate description of the asymmetry, while being consistent with the measured scattering amplitude and confirming the prominent role of hadronic final state interactions, paving the way for more elaborated analyses.

INTRODUCTION: Mild head trauma is a frequent complaint in Pediatric Emergency Departments. Several guidelines have been published in the last few years. However, significant variability can be appreciated in terms of the demand for image tests. The aim of this study is to determine the level of compliance with PECARN and AEP guidelines in the management of patients younger than 24 months old in four different hospitals. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A multicenter retrospective study was conducted on patients presenting with mild head trauma between October 1st, 2011 and March 31st, 2013 in the Emergency Departments of four hospitals. RESULTS: In the analysis of the results obtained, only one of the four hospitals complied with the AEP guidelines in more than 50% of the patients. The other three hospitals had a level of compliance lower than 50%. Management was more suitable according to PECARN guidelines, with 3 of the 4 hospitals having a level of compliance greater than 50%. However, the best compliance achieved by a hospital was only of 70%. CONCLUSIONS: The study shows that the level of compliance with guidelines for management of mild head trauma in patients younger than 24 months old is low

RESUMO

The freezing of Swiss chard has just started in Argentina. The blanching stage is fundamentally important to avoid damage of sensorial and nutritional properties during storage. If the process is not properly carried out, darkening can seriously affect the product. In this research work the thermal inactivation of polyphenoloxidase and peroxidase enzymes has been studied, in water at 80, 90 and 96 degrees C, as well as the polyphenoloxidase isoenzymes in the spear and leaf of the plant and the water-holding capacity after thermal treatment. Blanching has to be performed at a temperature higher than 90 degrees C in order to inactivate the enzyme polyphenoloxidase at a suitable rate which will avoid the formation of the characteristic colored substances.
