RESUMO

In a group of 329 diabetics aged 35-56 years with diabetes duration 1-30 years 134 cases were found diabetic retinopathy (40.7%). After 7 years funduscopy was repeated in 136 out of 248 patients and 50 new cases of retinopathy were disclosed. After multivariate analysis it was found that retinopathy was associated most closely with diabetes duration, while arterial hypertension was most surely predicting during 7 years future retinopathy, particularly in the case of higher level of glycosylated haemoglobin at the final examination.

RESUMO

A case of giant osteoma of the external lamina of the cranial bone is reported. The report is published as a contribution to the discussion on the methods of surgical removal of these tumours. The authors confirm the validity of the view that osteomas should be removed radically from the external lamina leaving the internal lamina intact if it is free of osteoma.

RESUMO

In the light of own experience with 50 patients with brain abscesses and a survey of the literature the authors discuss the values of the surgical methods of treatment in this disease. When the radical methods are used the mortality is lowest and the incidence of recurrent abscesses is lowest, but of this treatment is likely to produce considerable neurological deficit it is better to apply conservative methods, such as puncture and drainage of the abscess. The sparing operation as a method of choice may be the first stage of treatment before radical operation in acute abscess and in patients in serious clinical condition.
