Spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) are amplitude-modulated pure sinus tones. The character of the sinus tone, which is a rare phenomenon in nature, can be proven by resolving the shifts and drifts that more or less always occur. In this report amplitude modulation was studied by digital filtering. The SOAEs were composed of bursts which, in small emissions, appeared only a part of the time. This procedure is not only suited for studying SOAEs but also for demonstrating evoked emissions, even without averaging.

Deaf or residually hearing patients without sufficient auditory communication by conventional hearing aids are candidates for the implantation of a cochlear prosthesis. In addition to objective audiometry (electrophysiological evaluation and assessment of the degree and type of hearing loss), preoperative electrostimulation tests should be performed. In so doing, it is reasonable to employ late cortical potentials for preoperative patient selection as well as for postoperative follow-ups. In contrast to early potentials (such as, brain stem evoked potentials), late cortical potentials offer technical, physiological, medical and psychological advantages. This approach to testing has been used successfully in 70 patients (including children over the age of 3 years).

The results of this experimental study on human subjects indicate that the "far-field recorded auditory evoked wave VI potential" is correlated with auditory information processing of "rhythms" ("rhythm recognition", "rhythm experience"). Topography and functional mechanisms of a "neuronal system for rhythm detection" which is a prerequisite of "rhythmic experience" are discussed. The results cannot be interpreted as motor or attention effects.

Using the variables auditory threshold, speech audiometry, SISI, ABLB, stapedius reflex, Carhart-test, Békésy audiometry and calorization three factors could be extracted: 1. The quality of peripheral speech-coding in combination with central processing; 2. the degree of damage of the inner ear (threshold, distance between hearing-threshold and reflex-threshold, SISI and calorization); 3. a retrocochlear factor. SISI and ABLB are both tests concerning the inner ear, but must be regarded separately as it is to be supposed that these two findings are caused be two different pathologic processes.

The aim of the investigations was to demonstrate by means of statistical methods, that there was no signifikant difference between manual calculation and automatical computer analysis of ENG.
