Sublethal effects of imidacloprid and pymetrozine on the life table parameters of Aphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae).

In this study we report the sublethal effects of recommended concentrations of imidacloprid and pymetrozine on cotton aphid's reproduction. Fecundity life table parameters for AG were studied on cucumber under conditions of 25+/-1 degrees C, 70+/-5% RH and photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D). Leaf discs of cucumber immersed in the recommended concentrations of the above mentioned insecticides and controls and the new born female was released on the lower surface of leaf discs. Values of parameters such as adult longevity and daily fecundity rate were recorded. Standard error of population growth parameter was calculated using the Jacknife method. The results show that these two insecticides significantly reduce life table parameters compared with control.

Frameshift mutation of the zinc finger homeo box 1 B gene in syndromic corpus callosum agenesis (Mowat-Wilson syndrome).

We report a girl who had Hirschsprung disease in association with distinct facial appearance, microcephaly, agenesis of the corpus callosum and mental retardation (Mowat-Wilson syndrome). Mutation analysis of the zinc finger homeo box 1 B (ZFHX1 B) gene revealed a de novo 7 bp deletion (TGGCCCC) at nucleotide 1773 (1773 delTGGCCCC) resulting in a frameshift and leading to a termination codon at amino acid residue 604 (604 X) in exon 8 C. The zinc finger homeo box 1 B (Smad interacting protein-1) is a transcription corepressor of Smad target genes with functions in the patterning of neural crest derived cells, CNS, and midline structures. Mutations in ZFHX1 B can lead to neurological disorders in addition to dysmorphic features, megacolon, and other malformations.

An autosomal recessive syndrome of nasal anomalies associated with renal and anorectal malformations.

We report a consanguineous Arab family with four children affected with bifid nose associated with renal agenesis and variable degree of anorectal malformations. We suggest that the combination of abnormalities in these children represent a previously undescribed autosomal recessive syndrome.

Persistent müllerian duct syndrome.

We report an 18-month old male presenting with a right-sided inguinal hernia and undescended testes. At herniotomy, a uterus and two fallopian tubes were found in the pelvic peritoneum adjacent to the two gonads which received their blood supply partly along the müllerian duct remnants. The gonads were testes by histological examination. Bilateral orchiopexy was performed without removal of the müllerian structures for fear of jeopardizing the testicular blood supply. The diagnosis of persistent müllerian duct syndrome was confirmed postoperatively by genetic and hormonal investigations.

Immunoperoxidase study in alpha-chain disease.

Peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique was applied to search for the presence of alpha-chain protein in cells of the infiltrate from six cases of alpha-chain disease (one immunoblastic sarcoma and five plasmacytosis cases). Cases of poorly differentiated lymphocytic and Burkitt's type lymphomas, IgA myeloma, and tuberculous enteritis served as controls. Infiltrate cells from alpha-chain disease showed heavy and diffuse staining with anti-alpha-chain and not light-chain antisera. The myeloma reacted with both anti-alpha and anti-kappa antisera. Plasma cells from tuberculous enteritis showed variable staining with anti-heavy- and anti-light-chain antisera, while control lymphomas did not stain at all. We suggest that immunoenzyme histochemistry is a useful tool in demonstrating intracellular alpha-chain protein.

Retroperitoneal abscess presenting as an abdominal mass in neonate.

This is the first reported case of a retroperitoneal abscess in a neonate. The patient presented with a large abdominal mass at 3 wk of age. Excretory urogram followed by surgery established the diagnosis. Retroperitoneal abscesses must be considered in the differential diagnosis of abdominal masses in the new born.

Evaluation of counter immuno-electrophoresis crossed electro-immunodiffusion and agar gel diffusion for immunodiagnosis of human hydatid disease.

Techniques of counter immuno-electrophoresis (CIEP), crossed electro-immunodiffusion (CEID) and agar gel diffusion (AGD) were used for diagnosis of hydatid disease. Sera were obtained from suspected patients before surgery and the antigens used were either human hydatid fluid (HHF) or sheep hydatid fluid (SHF). Out of the 29 suspected cases, 21 were confirmed by recovering the cysts from lung (ten), liver (nine), liver and spleen (two). The experimental results showed that precipitin line(s) with CIEP were obtained with the sera of all 21 confirmed patients using HHF and of 13 using SHF. With CEID, all 19 sera tested demonstrated precipitin patterns with HHF. In the AGD test precipitin lines were obtained in the sera of 15 patients using HHF and of six using SHF. None of the sera from 22 patients suffering from illnesses other than hydatidosis or of the sera from 34 apparently normal individuals gave positive results with CIEP when either HHF or SHF was used as the source of antigen. The CIEP test correlated well with CEID. It is, therefore, suggested that CIEP, which is a rapid and less sophisticated test, can be applied for the diagnosis of hydatid disease and in epidemiological surveys.

Bypass to anterior descending coronary artery in patients with aneurysm or scarring of left ventricle.

Fifteen cases who have had myocardial infarction with aneurysm formation or severe scarring of the left ventricle as a result of occlusion of left anterior descending coronary artery are presented. Bypass to left anterior descending coronary artery using internal mammary artery or saphenous vein was done in all of these patients. Ten of these had plication or excision of the left ventricular aneurysm. All of them survived the operation and are doing well. Early results in this series of patients indicate that left anterior descending coronary artery bypass in these patients is of great value by allowing perfusion to patent brances of left anterior descending coronary artery.

Supralevator imperforate anus with unusual associated anomalies: colonic ureteral ectopy, intraluminal calcified meconium.

This case illustrates a complex of congenital ano-rectal and renal abnormalities not previously reported. Colonic ureteral ectopy, an extremely rare occurance, was also found in this patient and an explanation of the probable embryogenesis is proposed. The roentgen pattern of intraluminal calcified meconium is also illustrated.
