RESUMO

Data protection is regulated by legislation and has to be adhered to by scientists, too. This overview shows where aspects of data protection have to be considered in rehabilitation research. Important legal sources are the code of social law X, the German Federal Data Protection Act and the data protection acts of the German states. Specific recommendations about patient information sheet and written informed consent are given for research based on interviews with study participants. Furthermore, operations such as collecting, processing, using, storing, publishing and archiving of personal data are explained, taking into account the requirements of data protection. A practical example (URL: www.thieme-connect.de/ejournals/toc/rehabilitation) shows how to separate personal data and research data using the services of an external data custodian.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare the surgical results in patients with congenital superior oblique palsy treated with inferior oblique recession (IOR) versus those treated additionally with superior oblique tendon tuck (IOR+SOT). METHODS: A consecutive, nonrandomized series of patients with congenital superior oblique palsy with vertical deviations in adduction between 10° and 20° were retrospectively reviewed. In the first series, patients were treated with IOR; in the second series, patients were treated with IOR+SOT. We examined the effects of surgery on binocular alignment and on the field of binocular single vision. RESULTS: Each group consisted of 20 patients. Preoperative ocular deviations were similar in both groups. Postoperative residual vertical deviations were not different in the primary position or in downgaze; however, significantly better alignment was achieved in the IOR+SOT group in adduction and downgaze in adduction. Consecutive Brown pattern occurred in 18 of 20 patients who underwent IOR+SOT versus 5 of 20 who underwent IOR. Residual torsion was not statistically different. The field of binocular single vision improved to 92% (range, 28%-100%) after IOR and to 96% (range, 64%-100%) after IOR+SOT (P = 0.20). CONCLUSIONS: IOR alone is a suitable procedure for most congenital superior oblique palsies with a moderate-to-large vertical deviation in adduction, resulting in a lower incidence of consecutive Brown pattern than with IOR+SOT.

RESUMO

A highly hydrophobic analogue of angiotensin II (AT), [Sar1,(2',3',4',5',6'-Br5)Phe8]AT exhibited strong and persistent specific antagonism against AT, both in vitro and in vivo. This peptide exhibited 32% of the binding affinity of [Sar1]AT towards membranes of bovine adrenal cortex, it was a specific AT antagonist of irreversible character on smooth muscle assays, and it also suppressed for over 120 min at 7.10(-8) M/kg the blood pressure response towards AT in the rat blood pressure assay. This compound harbours therefore the potential of a new class of AT-specific antihypotensive drugs.
