RESUMO

We report a systematic theoretical and experimental investigation on the electronic transport evolution in metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes thin films enriched by gold nanocrystals. We used an ultra-clean production method of both types of single-walled carbon nanotube thin films with/without gold nanocrystals, which were uniformly dispersed in the whole volume of the thin films, causing a modification of the doping level of the films (verified by Raman spectroscopy). We propose a modification of the electronic transport model with the additional high-temperature features that allow us to interpret the transport within a broader temperature range and that are related to the conductivity type of carbon nanotubes. Moreover, we demonstrate, that the proposed model is also working for thin films with the addition of gold nanocrystals, and only a change of the conductivity level of our samples is observed caused by modification of potential barriers between carbon nanotubes. We also find unusual behavior of doped metallic carbon nanotube thin film, which lowers its conductivity due to doping.

We propose a method for monitoring the large-scale homogeneity of the reduction process of graphene oxide. For this purpose, a Raman mapping technique is employed to probe the evolution of the phonon properties of two different graphene oxide (GO) thin films upon controllable thermal reduction. The reduction of GO is reflected by the upshift of the statistical distribution of the relative intensity ratio of the G and D peaks (I D/I G) of the Raman spectra and is consistent with the ratio obtained for chemically reduced GO. In addition, the shifts of the position distributions of the main Raman modes ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) and their cross-correlation with the I D/I G ratio provides evidence of a change of the doping level, demonstrating the influence of reduction processes on GO films.

OBJECTIVE: Clinically nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma (NFPA) remains the only pituitary tumor subtype for which no effective medical therapy is available or recommended. We evaluated dopamine agonist (DA) therapy for preventing growth of postsurgical pituitary tumor remnants. DESIGN: The study design included historical cohort analysis of clinical results at two pituitary referral centers with different standard practices for postoperative NFPA management: DA therapy or conservative follow-up. METHODS: Seventy-nine patients followed for 8.8±6.5 years were treated with DA, initiated upon residual tumor detection on postoperative MRI (preventive treatment (PT) group, n=55), or when tumor growth was subsequently detected during follow-up (remedial treatment (RT) group, n=24). The control group (n=60) received no medication. Tumoral dopamine and estrogen receptor expression assessed by quantitative RT-PCR and immunostaining were correlated with response to treatment. RESULTS: Tumor mass decreased, remained stable, or enlarged, respectively, in 38, 49, and 13% of patients in the PT group, and in 0, 53, and 47% of control subjects; shrinkage or stabilization was achieved in 58% of enlarging tumors in the RT group, P < 0.0001.Fifteen-year progression-free survival rate was 0.805, 0.24, and 0.04, respectively, for PT, RT, and control groups (P<0.001). About 42% of patients in the control group required additional surgery or radiotherapy, compared with 38 and 13% subjects in the RT and PT groups, respectively (P=0.002). Outcome measures were not related to NFPA D2R abundance. CONCLUSIONS: Dopamine agonist therapy in patients with NFPA is associated with decreased prevalence of residual tumor enlargement after transsphenoidal surgical resection.

Clinical assessment of skeletal maturity is based on a visual comparison of a left-hand wrist radiograph with atlas patterns. Using a new digital hand atlas an image analysis methodology is being developed. To assist radiologists in bone age estimation. The analysis starts with a preprocessing function yielding epiphyseal/metaphyseal regions of interest (EMROIs). Then, these regions are subjected to a feature extraction function. Accuracy has been measured independently at three stages of the image analysis: detection of phalangeal tip, extraction of the EMROIs, and location of diameters and lower edge of the EMROIs. Extracted features describe the stage of skeletal development more objectively than visual comparison.

Epiphyseal region is the most sensitive region to developmental changes of the skeletal system. Extraction of this area is the very first step in any computerized image analysis. In this report a fully automated analysis of a hand radiograph resulting in extraction of distal and middle regions of the II, III, and IV phalanx is presented. The processing is performed in 3 stages. First, the trend of background is removed from radiograph to obtain a binary hand mask. At this stage a labeling procedure is necessary to eliminate artifacts (markers). Then, II, III, and IV phalanges are identified in the binary image, and the phalangeal axes are drawn. Finally, the intensity profile along each phalangeal axis is analyzed, and, on its basis, distal and middle regions are located. The presented procedure is designed as a part of currently developed system for automatic bone age assessment; however, it also can be as a preprocessing step in other diseases the diagnoses of which may require a computer assistance.
