RESUMO

Given that individuals have (some) agency to influence their own experiences of aging via communication, it is important to better understand factors that may play a role in these processes. Specifically, this study examined whether and how themes of aging-related memorable messages (e.g. aging involves physical or mental health struggles; age is merely a subjective state) and the extent to which a message offered a sense of positivity and efficacy predicted individuals' efficacy assessments (coping, target, communication) and intention to seek additional information about aging processes. Analyses of responses from a sample of 232 older adults from the United States revealed that memorable message: (a) themes about aging predicted participants' reports of memorable message positivity and efficacy, (b) valence predicted memorable message positivity and efficacy, and (c) characteristics (positivity and efficacy) predicted individuals' efficacy assessments and, ultimately, intention to seek information about aging processes (both directly and indirectly). Results offer theoretical and practical implications.

RESUMO

Negative messages about aging dominate public discourse about the COVID-19 pandemic as older adults have been classified as members of a "vulnerable" population due to their chronological age. To explore young adults' feelings about aging before and after the emergence of COVID-19, we collected 794 qualitative questionnaires during the fall of 2017 and another 463 responses during the fall of 2020. We drew on the concepts of age-based stereotypes and future selves to guide our thematic analysis of the data. Findings captured young adults' feelings about aging at two distinct points in time and demonstrate the complex ways the communication contributed to shifting feelings about aging. In doing so, we highlight the role that portrayals of aging play in shaping young adults' feelings about aging and their perception of their future selves. These findings offer conceptual contributions about communication, context, and aging.

RESUMO

Processes of revealing, or disclosures, take various forms, and are sometimes referred to as disclosure strategies. How individuals share information influences how recipients respond, which may have important consequences that shape perceptions of the overall interaction and relationship satisfaction. This research explores mental health disclosures among friends to understand how (a) one's disclosure strategy predicts their perceptions of the recipient response, (b) perceived recipient response predicts perceptions of disclosure outcomes, and (c) perceived recipient response potentially mediates the relationships between disclosure strategies and disclosure outcomes (e.g., interaction success, relationship satisfaction). Participants were 144 individuals who had disclosed their mental health condition to a friend. Analyses revealed that when disclosing mental health information to a friend, strategy use was, in part, predictive of perceived recipient response which, in turn, predicted discloser's ratings of disclosure outcomes. This manuscript discusses implications of findings and suggests directions for future research.

RESUMO

This study investigated the role of uncertainty in information management processes by integrating insights from uncertainty management theory and the theory of motivated information management. Specifically, we examined the extent to which uncertainty appraisals moderated the effects of uncertainty on anxiety and information seeking about family health history (FHH) from spouses. Data from 626 married individuals suggested that desired uncertainty moderated uncertainty's effect on anxiety such that uncertainty led to more anxiety when individuals wanted to be more certain. Uncertainty also exerted stronger effects on anxiety and information seeking when one's actual uncertainty was low. Efficacy remained a predictor of information seeking, consistent with the literature. Findings offer theoretical implications about the interaction effects among different conceptualizations of uncertainty (i.e., actual, desired, and uncertainty discrepancy) and practical applications for encouraging information seeking about FHH.

RESUMO

Romantic partners' communication about sex has been shown to enhance marital satisfaction and well-being, yet is often associated with high levels of uncertainty due to the challenging and potentially face-threatening topics involved in such discussion. While much literature focuses on sexual health information seeking, relational partners' uncertainty management related to sexual satisfaction has not been examined. This study focused on married couples' discussion of sexual satisfaction, tested the theory of motivated information management (TMIM; Afifi & Weiner, 2004) within this context, and examined relational moderators that could influence relational partners' communication about sexual satisfaction. Data from 248 married participants suggested that TMIM effectively predicted five different information management strategies, including direct and indirect information seeking, avoidance, cognitive reappraisal, and disclosure, although the processes through which uncertainty discrepancy influenced information management differed depending on the information management strategy. Furthermore, results indicated relational factors such as marital quality, relational closeness, and communal coping moderated TMIM paths in distinct ways. Theoretical and practical implications for relational partners' uncertainty management about sexual satisfaction are discussed.

RESUMO

Within the context of mental illness disclosure between friends, this study tested the disclosure decision-making model (DD-MM; Greene, 2009) to comprehensively investigate factors that predict disclosure enactment strategies. The DD-MM describes how individuals determine whether they will reveal or conceal non-visible health information. Processes of revealing, called disclosures, take various forms including preparation and rehearsal, directness, third-party disclosure, incremental disclosures, entrapment, and indirect mediums (Afifi & Steuber, 2009). We explore the disclosure decision-making process to understand how college students select to disclose their mental illness information with a friend. Participants were 144 students at a Midwestern university who had disclosed their mental illness information to a friend. Structural equation modeling analyses revealed that college students choose strategies based on their evaluation of information assessment and closeness, and that for some strategies, efficacy mediates the relationship between information assessment and strategy. This manuscript discusses implications of findings and suggests direction for future research.

RESUMO

Drawing on Goldsmith's (2004) normative theory, this article maps dilemmas family members experience when talking with returning service members (SMs) about seeking mental health care. Eighty family members of United States SMs who served in Iraq or Afghanistan read a scenario where their SM was displaying posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression symptoms. Participants described goals they would pursue, barriers they might encounter, and advice they would give others in the situation. Four dilemmas of talking about mental health emerged: (a) getting you to recognize the problem without implying you're not normal, (b) convincing you to seek help without implying you're weak, (c) being persistent but patient, and (d) wanting you to open up without implying I can understand. Family members reported using four groups of strategies to manage these dilemmas. Directions for expanding the concept of dilemmas as "paradoxes" and for supporting military families as well as rethinking policy assumptions are discussed.
